Complex BPS Black Holes in AdS$_3\times S^3$

The correct gravitational representation of the supersymmetric index is a smooth complex solution, rather than the na\"{\i}ve Euclidean continuation of the Lorentizan BPS black hole. We construct such saddles for black holes with \(\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3\) boundary conditions in the STU model. We arrive at the same finite-temperature BTZ \(\times S^3\) geometries in two independent ways: from two-center four-dimensional BPS solutions with complex dipole charges, and from six-dimensional black strings after imposing the BPS relation among conserved charges. We analyze the resulting smoothness and periodicity conditions and show that they are precisely those required for globally well-defined supersymmetry and for the thermodynamic potentials of the supersymmetric index.

Allowable Complex Black Holes in the Euclidean Gravitational Path Integral

The Euclidean Gravitational Path Integral has proven remarkably effective in the quantum regime of black hole physics. In this work, we examine the applicability of the Kontsevich-Segal-Witten (KSW) criterion for admissible complex metrics in the context of the Euclidean Gravitational Path Integral. We find that, for the super-conformal index of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM with unequal angular momenta, the black hole saddle points violate the KSW criterion precisely where the statistical description of the index breaks down. The corresponding critical point coincides with a phase transition into two-component ``grey galaxy'' configurations in the micro-canonical ensemble.

Phases of Supersymmetric Ground States in $AdS_4$

We construct the phase diagram of supersymmetric ground states in AdS$_4\times S^7$ supergravity. BPS black holes exist only when the conserved charges satisfy a certain non-linear constraint. For other charge sectors, we propose two component configurations comprised of a core black hole that carries macroscopic entropy, and a gas that carries a macroscopic fraction of the charge. The superconformal index counts ground states only modulo a linear constraint on the charges. Each index line includes a pure BPS black hole but we find that, when differences between R-charge exceed a certain threshold, the index is dominated by a two component configuration. We illuminate this result by studying the gravitational path integral in Euclidean signature, as function of supersymmetric boundary conditions. We find that a pure BPS black hole saddle dominates the index when the R-charges are comparable, but not when they differ sufficiently. The region where the Euclidean path integral becomes unstable is precisely where two component configurations dominate the index. We show that the KSW criteria are insensitive to this instability.

Instability of Black Holes in AdS$_3 \times S^3$

Extremal and near extremal black holes are unstable, unless they are protected by supersymmetry. For black holes in AdS$_3 \times S^3$, we study the range of parameters that bound the unstable region, the fate of extremal black holes that are unstable, and the true ground state in super-selection sectors where no isolated black hole solution exists. Thermodynamics generally favors a central black hole surrounded by chiral primaries that carry a significant fraction of the conserved charges. We give a dynamical interpretation of decay, by computing the linear response functions in the dual CFT$_2$ and showing that the onset of instability agrees with thermodynamics. To understand the nature of the decay products, we construct several new families of classical string solutions. They are ``giants" that move on both the AdS$_3$ and the $S^3$, and may have interesting applications beyond those we develop.

Supergravity Spectrum of AdS$_5$ Black Holes

We embed Kerr-Newman-AdS black holes into $\mathcal{N} = 8$ gauged supergravity and study quadratic fluctuations around the black hole backgrounds of all fields in the larger theory. The equations of motion of the perturbations are partially diagonalized by the group theory of broken symmetry. Nearly all fields in theory have non-minimal couplings, so their equations of motion are not merely massive Klein-Gordon equations with minimal coupling to background gauge fields, and their analogues for fields with spin. In the special case of extremal black holes we identify specific modes of instability, some of which touch supersymmetric locus. For example, we identify scalar fields in supergravity that condense in the near horizon region and transition the black hole into a superconducting phase. We also identify supergravity modes that are susceptible to superradiant instability

Supersymmetric Charge Constraints on AdS Black Holes from Free Fields

Supersymmetric AdS black hole solutions exist only when their angular momenta and charges satisfy a certain constraint that depends on the dimension. We show that these nonlinear relations on the conserved charges agree with a computation in the dual supersymmetric CFT in its free limit, with interactions entering only through a uniform rescaling of all charges. Our computations apply to the highly non-trivial charge constraints for AdS$_4$, AdS$_5$ and AdS$_7$ black holes, and generalize an earlier one for the analogous constraint in AdS$_3$. Our results suggest a microscopic understanding of AdS black holes beyond the scope of supersymmetric indices.

The Attractor Flow for AdS$_5$ Black Holes in $\mathcal{N} = 2$ Gauged Supergravity

We study the flow equations for BPS black holes in $\mathcal{N} = 2$ five-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to any number of vector multiplets via FI couplings. We develop the Noether-Wald procedure in this context and exhibit the conserved charges as explicit integrals of motion, in the sense that they can be computed at any radius on the rotating spacetime. The boundary conditions needed to solve the first order differential equations are discussed in great detail. We extremize the entropy function that controls the near horizon geometry and give explicit formulae for all geometric variables at their supersymmetric extrema. We have also considered a complexification of the near-horizon variables that elucidates some features of the theory from the near-horizon perspective.

AdS$_2$ Holography and Effective QFT

We discuss AdS$_2$ quantum gravity from an unconventional perspective that emphasizes bulk geometry. In our approach, AdS$_2$ has no boundary, there are no divergences that require renormalization, and the dilaton of JT-gravity can be omitted altogether. The result is the standard Schwarzian theory. However, it may be advantageous that our derivation just relies on conventional AdS/CFT correspondence and effective quantum field theory. For example, it clarifies the symmetry breaking pattern. It also puts the non-compact AdS$_2$ topology on the same footing as compact Riemann surfaces.

The Phase Diagram of BPS Black Holes in AdS$_5$

Motivated by recent studies of supersymmetric black holes, we revisit the phase diagram of AdS black holes, whether BPS or not, with particular emphasis on the role of rotation. We develop BPS thermodynamics systematically and, in many explicit examples, we study its striking similarities with more familiar AdS black holes, as well as some differences. We highlight an important fugacity that preserves BPS saturation but is not captured by the supersymmetric index.

Effective Field Theory of Quantum Black Holes

We review and extend recent progress on the quantum description of near-extremal black holes in the language of effective quantum field theory. With black holes in Einstein-Maxwell theory as the main example, we derive the Schwarzian low energy description of the AdS$_2$ region from a spacetime point of view. We also give a concise formula for the symmetry breaking scale, we relate rotation to supersymmetry, and we discuss quantum corrections to black hole entropy.

Microscopic Entropy of AdS$_3$ Black Holes Revisited

We revisit the microscopic description of AdS$_3$ black holes in light of recent progress on their higher dimensional analogues. The grand canonical partition function that follows from the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence describes BPS and nearBPS black hole thermodynamics. We formulate an entropy extremization principle that accounts for both the black hole entropy and a constraint on its charges, in close analogy with asymptotically AdS black holes in higher dimensions. We are led to interpret supersymmetric black holes as ensembles of BPS microstates satisfying a charge constraint that is not respected by individual states. This interpretation provides a microscopic understanding of the hitherto mysterious charge constraints satisfied by all BPS black holes in AdS. We also develop thermodynamics and a nAttractor mechanism of AdS$_3$ black holes in the nearBPS regime.

Thermodynamics of Near BPS Black Holes in AdS$_4$ and AdS$_7$

We develop the thermodynamics of black holes in AdS$_4$ and AdS$_7$ near their BPS limit. In each setting we study the two distinct deformations orthogonal to the BPS surface as well as their nontrivial interplay with each other and with BPS properties. Our results illuminate recent microscopic calculations of the BPS entropy. We show that these microscopic computations can be leveraged to also describe the near BPS regime, by generalizing the boundary conditions imposed on states.

The Scales of Black Holes with nAdS$_2$ Geometry

We study nearly extreme black holes with nearly AdS$_2$ horizon geometry in various settings inspired by string theory. Our focus is on the scales of the nAdS$_2$ region and their relation to microscopic theory. These scales are determined by a generalization of the attractor mechanism for extremal black holes and realized geometrically as the normal derivatives along the extremal attractor flow. In some cases the scales are equivalently determined by the charge dependence of the extremal attractor by itself. Our examples include near extreme black holes in $D\geq 4$ dimensions, AdS boundary conditions, rotation, and 5D black holes on the non-BPS branch.

A One-Loop Test of the near-AdS$_2$/near-CFT$_1$ Correspondence

We analyze quantum fluctuations around black hole solutions to the Jackiw-Teitelboim model. We use harmonic analysis on Euclidean AdS$_2$ to show that the logarithmic corrections to the partition function are determined entirely by quadratic holomorphic differentials, even when conformal symmetry is broken and harmonic modes are no longer true zero modes. Our quantum-corrected partition function agrees precisely with the SYK result. We argue that our effective quantum field theory methods and results generalize to other theories of two-dimensional dilaton gravity.

AdS$_5$ Black Hole Entropy near the BPS Limit

We analyze AdS$_5$ black holes that are nearly supersymmetric. They depart from the BPS limit in two distinct ways: a temperature takes them above extremality and a potential violates a certain constraint. We study the thermodynamics of these deformations and their interplay in detail. We discuss recent microscopic computations of BPS black hole entropy in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and generalize methods to the nearBPS regime by relaxing constraints imposed by supersymmetry. The computations recover gravitational results from microscopics also for nearBPS black holes.

Black Hole Spectroscopy and AdS$_2$ Holography

We compute the spectrum of extremal nonBPS black holes in four dimensions by studying supergravity on their AdS$_2\times S^2$ near horizon geometry. We find that the spectrum exhibits significant simplifications even though supersymmetry is completely broken. We interpret our results in the framework of nAdS$_2$/nCFT$_1$ correspondence and by comparing with dimensional reduction from AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ duality. As an additional test we compute quantum corrections to extremal black hole entropy on the nonBPS branch and recover results previously determined using very different methods.

5D Rotating Black Holes and the nAdS$_2$/nCFT$_1$ Correspondence

We study rotating black holes in five dimensions using the nAdS$_2$/nCFT$_1$ correspondence. A consistent truncation of pure Einstein gravity (with a cosmological constant) in five dimensions to two dimensions gives a generalization of the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory that has two scalar fields: a dilaton and a squashing parameter that breaks spherical symmetry. The interplay between these two scalar fields is non trivial and leads to interesting new features. We study the holographic description of this theory and apply the results to the thermodynamics of the rotating black hole from a two dimensional point of view. This setup challenges notions of universality that have been advanced based on simpler models: we find that the mass gap of Kerr-AdS$_5$ corresponds to an undetermined effective coupling in the nAdS$_2$/nCFT$_1$ theory which depends on ultraviolet data.

Quantum Corrections to Central Charges and Supersymmetric Casimir Energy in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

We study the Casimir energy of bulk fields in AdS$_3$ and its relation to subleading terms in the central charge of the dual CFT$_2$. Computing both sides of the standard CFT$_2$ relation $E=-c/12$ independently we show that this relation is not necessarily satisfied at the level of individual bulk supergravity states, but in theories with sufficient supersymmetry it is restored at the level of bulk supermultiplets. Assuming only $(0,2)$ supersymmetry (or more), we improve the situation by relating quantum corrections to the central charge and the supersymmetric Casimir energy which in turn is related to an index. These relations adapt recent progress on the AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ correspondence to AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ holography. We test our formula successfully in several examples, including the $(0,4)$ MSW theory describing classes of 4D black holes and the large $(4,4)$ theory that is interesting for higher spin holography. We also make predictions for the subleading central charges in several recently proposed $(2,2)$ dualities where the CFT$_2$ is not yet well-understood.
