Surfaces with parallel mean curvature in warped product spaces

In this work, we obtain a geometric description of surfaces $M^2$ of arbitrary codimension in the warped product $\mathbb{R}\times_\rho\mathbb{Q}^n_\epsilon$, with parallel mean curvature vector field in the normal connection, extending a result by Alencar-do Carmo-Tribuzy.

Hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^3 \times \mathbb{R}$ with constant principal curvatures

We classify the hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{Q}^3\times\mathbb{R}$ with three distinct constant principal curvatures, where $\varepsilon \in \{1,-1\}$ and $\mathbb{Q}^3$ denotes the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$ if $\varepsilon = 1$, whereas it denotes the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$ if $\varepsilon = -1$. We show that they are cylinders over isoparametric surfaces in $\mathbb{Q}^3$, filling an intriguing gap in the existing literature. We also prove that the hypersurfaces with constant principal curvatures of $\mathbb{Q}^3\times\mathbb{R}$ are isoparametric. Furthermore, we provide the complete classification of the extrinsically homogeneous hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{Q}^3\times\mathbb{R}$.

Complete cohomogeneity one hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$

We study isometric immersions $f: M^n \rightarrow \mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ into hyperbolic space of dimension $n+1$ of a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ on which a compact connected group of intrinsic isometries acts with principal orbits of codimension one. We provide a characterization if either $n \geq 3$ and $M^n$ is compact, or $n \geq 5$ and the connected components of the set where the sectional curvature is constant and equal to $-1$ are bounded.

Einstein Hypersurfaces of Warped Product Spaces

We consider Einstein hypersurfaces of warped products $I\times_\omega\mathbb Q_\epsilon^n,$ where $I\subset\mathbb R$ is an open interval and $\mathbb Q_\epsilon^n$ is the simply connected space form of dimension $n\ge 2$ and constant sectional curvature $\epsilon\in\{-1,0,1\}.$ We show that, for all $c\in\mathbb R$ (resp. $c>0$), there exist rotational hypersurfaces of constant sectional curvature $c$ in $I\times_\omega\mathbb H^n$ and $I\times_\omega\mathbb R^n$ (resp. $I\times_\omega\mathbb S^n$), provided that $\omega$ is nonconstant. We also show that the gradient $T$ of the height function of any Einstein hypersurface of $I\times_\omega\mathbb Q_\epsilon^n$ (if nonzero) is one of its principal directions. Then, we consider a particular type of Einstein hypersurface of $I\times_\omega\mathbb Q_\epsilon^n$ with non vanishing $T$ -- which we call ideal -- and prove that such a hypersurface $\Sigma$ has either precisely two or precisely three distinct principal curvatures everywhere. We show that, in the latter case, there exist such a $\Sigma$ for certain warping functions $\omega,$ whereas in the former case, $\Sigma$ is necessarily of constant sectional curvature and rotational, regardless the warping function $\omega.$ We also characterize ideal Einstein hypersurfaces of $I\times_\omega\mathbb Q_\epsilon^n$ with no vanishing angle function as local graphs on families of isoparametric hypersurfaces of $\mathbb Q_\epsilon^n.$

Rigidity and stability estimates for minimal submanifolds in the hyperbolic space

In this paper we establish conditions on the length of the second fundamental form of a complete minimal submanifold $M^n$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+m}$ in order to show that $M^n$ is totally geodesic. We also obtain sharp upper bounds estimates for the first eigenvalue of the super stability operator in the case of $M$ is a surface in $\mathbb{H}^{4}$.

Complete submanifolds with relative nullity in space forms

We use techniques based on the splitting tensor to explicitly integrate the Codazzi equation along the relative nullity distribution and express the second fundamental form in terms of the Jacobi tensor of the ambient space. This approach allows us to easily recover several important results in the literature on complete submanifolds with relative nullity of the sphere as well as derive new strong consequences in hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces. Among the consequences of our main theorem are results on submanifolds with sufficiently high index of relative nullity, submanifolds with nonpositive extrinsic curvature and submanifolds with integrable relative conullity. We show that no complete submanifold of hyperbolic space with sufficiently high index of relative nullity has extrinsic geometry bounded away from zero. As an application of these results, we derive an interesting corollary for complete submanifolds of hyperbolic space with nonpositive extrinsic curvature and discourse on their relation to Milnor's conjecture about complete surfaces with second fundamental form bounded away from zero. Finally, we also prove that every complete Euclidean submanifold with integrable relative conullity is a cylinder over the relative conullity.

Geometry of submanifolds with respect to ambient vector fields

Given a Riemannian manifold $N^n$ and ${\cal Z}\in \mathfrak{X}(N)$, an isometric immersion $f\colon M^m\to N^n$ is said to have the \emph{constant ratio property with respect to ${\cal Z}$} either if the tangent component ${\cal Z}^T_f$ of ${\cal Z}$ vanishes identically or if ${\cal Z}^T_f$ vanishes nowhere and the ratio $\|{\cal Z}^\perp_f\|/\|{\cal Z}^T_f\|$ between the lengths of the normal and tangent components of ${\cal Z}$ is constant along $M^m$. It has the \emph{principal direction property with respect to ${\cal Z}$} if ${\cal Z}^T_f$ is an eigenvector of all shape operators of $f$ at all points of $M^m$. In this article we study isometric immersions $f\colon M^m\to N^n$ of arbitrary codimension that have either the constant ratio or the principal direction property with respect to distinguished vector fields ${\cal Z}$ on space forms, product spaces $\Sf^n\times \R$ and $\Hy^n\times \R$, where $\Sf^n$ and $\Hy^n$ are the $n$-dimensional sphere and hyperbolic space, respectively, and, more generally, on warped products $I\times_{\rho}\Q_\e^n$ of an open interval $I\subset \R$ and a space form $\Q_\e^n$. Starting from the observation that these properties are invariant under conformal changes of the ambient metric, we provide new characterization and classification results of isometric immersions that satisfy either of those properties, or both of them simultaneously, for several relevant instances of ${\cal Z}$ as well as simpler descriptions and proofs of some known ones for particular cases of ${\cal Z}$ previously considered by many authors.

Biconservative submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}$

In this paper, we study biconservative submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}$ with parallel mean curvature vector field and co-dimension 2. We obtain some necessary and sufficient conditions for such submanifolds to be conservative. In particular, we obtain a complete classification of 3-dimensional biconservative submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{4}\times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{4}\times \mathbb{R}$ with nonzero parallel mean curvature vector field. We also get some results for biharmonic submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}$.

Helicoidal flat surfaces in the 3-sphere

In this paper, helicoidal flat surfaces in the $3$-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$ are considered. A complete classification of such surfaces is given in terms of their first and second fundamental forms and by linear solutions of the corresponding angle function. The classification is obtained by using the Bianchi-Spivak construction for flat surfaces and a representation for constant angle surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$.

Submanifolds with nonpositive extrinsic curvature

We prove that complete submanifolds, on which the Omori-Yau weak maximum principle for the Hessian holds, with low codimension and bounded by cylinders of small radius must have points rich in large positive extrinsic curvature. The lower the codimension is, the richer such points are. The smaller the radius is, the larger such curvatures are. This work unifies and generalizes several previous results on submanifolds with nonpositive extrinsic curvature.

On the fundamental tone of immersions and submersions

In this paper we obtain lower bound estimates of the spectrum of Laplace-Beltrami operator on complete submanifolds with bounded mean curvature, whose ambient space admits a Riemannian submersion over a Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature. Our main theorem generalizes many previous known estimates and applies for both immersions and submersions.

Minimal immersions of Riemannian manifolds in products of space forms

In this note, we give natural extensions to cylinders and tori of a classical result due to T. Takahashi about minimal immersions into spheres. More precisely, we deal with Euclidean isometric immersions whose projections in R^N satisfy a spectral condition of their Laplacian.
