EditableNeRF: Editing Topologically Varying Neural Radiance Fields by Key Points

Neural radiance fields (NeRF) achieve highly photo-realistic novel-view synthesis, but it's a challenging problem to edit the scenes modeled by NeRF-based methods, especially for dynamic scenes. We propose editable neural radiance fields that enable end-users to easily edit dynamic scenes and even support topological changes. Input with an image sequence from a single camera, our network is trained fully automatically and models topologically varying dynamics using our picked-out surface key points. Then end-users can edit the scene by easily dragging the key points to desired new positions. To achieve this, we propose a scene analysis method to detect and initialize key points by considering the dynamics in the scene, and a weighted key points strategy to model topologically varying dynamics by joint key points and weights optimization. Our method supports intuitive multi-dimensional (up to 3D) editing and can generate novel scenes that are unseen in the input sequence. Experiments demonstrate that our method achieves high-quality editing on various dynamic scenes and outperforms the state-of-the-art. ShadowNeuS: Neural SDF Reconstruction by Shadow Ray Supervision

By supervising camera rays between a scene and multi-view image planes, NeRF reconstructs a neural scene representation for the task of novel view synthesis. On the other hand, shadow rays between the light source and the scene have yet to be considered. Therefore, we propose a novel shadow ray supervision scheme that optimizes both the samples along the ray and the ray location. By supervising shadow rays, we successfully reconstruct a neural SDF of the scene from single-view images under multiple lighting conditions. Given single-view binary shadows, we train a neural network to reconstruct a complete scene not limited by the camera's line of sight. By further modeling the correlation between the image colors and the shadow rays, our technique can also be effectively extended to RGB inputs. We compare our method with previous works on challenging tasks of shape reconstruction from single-view binary shadow or RGB images and observe significant improvements. The code and data are available at https://github.com/gerwang/ShadowNeuS.

Learning a 3D Morphable Face Reflectance Model from Low-cost Data

Modeling non-Lambertian effects such as facial specularity leads to a more realistic 3D Morphable Face Model. Existing works build parametric models for diffuse and specular albedo using Light Stage data. However, only diffuse and specular albedo cannot determine the full BRDF. In addition, the requirement of Light Stage data is hard to fulfill for the research communities. This paper proposes the first 3D morphable face reflectance model with spatially varying BRDF using only low-cost publicly-available data. We apply linear shiness weighting into parametric modeling to represent spatially varying specular intensity and shiness. Then an inverse rendering algorithm is developed to reconstruct the reflectance parameters from non-Light Stage data, which are used to train an initial morphable reflectance model. To enhance the model's generalization capability and expressive power, we further propose an update-by-reconstruction strategy to finetune it on an in-the-wild dataset. Experimental results show that our method obtains decent rendering results with plausible facial specularities. Our code is released \href{https://yxuhan.github.io/ReflectanceMM/index.html}{\textcolor{magenta}{here}}.

How To Guide Your Learner: Imitation Learning with Active Adaptive Expert Involvement

Imitation learning aims to mimic the behavior of experts without explicit reward signals. Passive imitation learning methods which use static expert datasets typically suffer from compounding error, low sample efficiency, and high hyper-parameter sensitivity. In contrast, active imitation learning methods solicit expert interventions to address the limitations. However, recent active imitation learning methods are designed based on human intuitions or empirical experience without theoretical guarantee. In this paper, we propose a novel active imitation learning framework based on a teacher-student interaction model, in which the teacher's goal is to identify the best teaching behavior and actively affect the student's learning process. By solving the optimization objective of this framework, we propose a practical implementation, naming it AdapMen. Theoretical analysis shows that AdapMen can improve the error bound and avoid compounding error under mild conditions. Experiments on the MetaDrive benchmark and Atari 2600 games validate our theoretical analysis and show that our method achieves near-expert performance with much less expert involvement and total sampling steps than previous methods. The code is available at https://github.com/liuxhym/AdapMen.

Molecular dynamics simulation of the transformation of Fe-Co alloy by machine learning force field based on atomic cluster expansion

The force field describing the calculated interaction between atoms or molecules is the key to the accuracy of many molecular dynamics (MD) simulation results. Compared with traditional or semi-empirical force fields, machine learning force fields have the advantages of faster speed and higher precision. We have employed the method of atomic cluster expansion (ACE) combined with first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations for machine learning, and successfully obtained the force field of the binary Fe-Co alloy. Molecular dynamics simulations of Fe-Co alloy carried out using this ACE force field predicted the correct phase transition range of Fe-Co alloy.

Ultra-conformable Liquid Metal Particle Monolayer on Air/water Interface for Substrate-free E-tattoo

Gallium-based liquid metal is getting increased attention in conformal flexible electronics for its high electrical conductivity, intrinsic deformability and biocompatibility. A series of flexible devices are developed based on the micro-particles of liquid metal. But it is still challenging to fabricate conformal liquid metal film with a large area and high uniformity. Interfacial self-assembly is a competitive candidate method. Traditional interfacial self-assembly methods have difficulties assembling liquid metal particles because the floating state of the high-density microparticles could be easily disturbed by gravity. Here, we realized the multi-size universal self-assembly (MUS) for liquid metal particles with various diameters (0~500μm). By introducing a simple z-axis undisturbed interfacial material releasing strategy, the interference of gravitational energy on the stability of floating particles is avoided. Benefits from this, the ultra-conformable monolayer film, with large area (>100 cm2) and high floating yield (50%~90%), can be fabricated by liquid metal particles. Furthermore, the monolayer can be conformally transferred to any interesting complex surface such as human skin and plant leaf, to fabricate substrate-free flexible devices. Without interference from the mechanical response of traditional substrate, the liquid metal e-tattoo is more user-friendly and can realize feel-less continuous monitoring.

A Tale of Two Cities: Data and Configuration Variances in Robust Deep Learning

Deep neural networks (DNNs), are widely used in many industries such as image recognition, supply chain, medical diagnosis, and autonomous driving. However, prior work has shown the high accuracy of a DNN model does not imply high robustness (i.e., consistent performances on new and future datasets) because the input data and external environment (e.g., software and model configurations) for a deployed model are constantly changing. Hence, ensuring the robustness of deep learning is not an option but a priority to enhance business and consumer confidence. Previous studies mostly focus on the data aspect of model variance. In this article, we systematically summarize DNN robustness issues and formulate them in a holistic view through two important aspects, i.e., data and software configuration variances in DNNs. We also provide a predictive framework to generate representative variances (counterexamples) by considering both data and configurations for robust learning through the lens of search-based optimization.

Physical Interaction: Reconstructing Hand-object Interactions with Physics

Single view-based reconstruction of hand-object interaction is challenging due to the severe observation missing caused by occlusions. This paper proposes a physics-based method to better solve the ambiguities in the reconstruction. It first proposes a force-based dynamic model of the in-hand object, which not only recovers the unobserved contacts but also solves for plausible contact forces. Next, a confidence-based slide prevention scheme is proposed, which combines both the kinematic confidences and the contact forces to jointly model static and sliding contact motion. Qualitative and quantitative experiments show that the proposed technique reconstructs both physically plausible and more accurate hand-object interaction and estimates plausible contact forces in real-time with a single RGBD sensor.

Learning Near-global-optimal Strategies for Hybrid Non-convex Model Predictive Control of Single Rigid Body Locomotion

Convex model predictive controls (MPCs) with a single rigid body model have demonstrated strong performance on real legged robots. However, convex MPCs are limited by their assumptions such as small rotation angle and pre-defined gait, limiting the richness of potential solutions. We remove those assumptions and solve the complete mixed-integer non-convex programming with single rigid body model. We first collect datasets of pre-solved problems offline, then learn the problem-solution map to solve this optimization fast for MPC. If warm-starts can be found, offline problems can be solved close to the global optimality. The proposed controller is tested by generating various gaits and behaviors depending on the initial conditions. Hardware test demonstrates online gait generation and adaptation running at more than 50 Hz based on sensor feedback.

EAMM: One-Shot Emotional Talking Face via Audio-Based Emotion-Aware Motion Model

Although significant progress has been made to audio-driven talking face generation, existing methods either neglect facial emotion or cannot be applied to arbitrary subjects. In this paper, we propose the Emotion-Aware Motion Model (EAMM) to generate one-shot emotional talking faces by involving an emotion source video. Specifically, we first propose an Audio2Facial-Dynamics module, which renders talking faces from audio-driven unsupervised zero- and first-order key-points motion. Then through exploring the motion model's properties, we further propose an Implicit Emotion Displacement Learner to represent emotion-related facial dynamics as linearly additive displacements to the previously acquired motion representations. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that by incorporating the results from both modules, our method can generate satisfactory talking face results on arbitrary subjects with realistic emotion patterns.

Single-crystal elastic moduli, anisotropy and the B1-B2 phase transition of NaCl at high pressures: Experiment vs. ab-initio calculations

Single-crystal elastic moduli, Cij, and the B1-B2 phase transition of NaCl were investigated experimentally, using time-domain Brillouin scattering (TDBS), and theoretically, via density-functional-theory (DFT), to 41 GPa. Thus, we largely extended pressure range where Cij and elastic anisotropy of the solid are measured, including the first experimental data for the high-pressure B2 phase, NaCl-B2. NaCl-B1 exhibits a strong and growing with pressure anisotropy, in contrast to NaCl-B2. Theoretical values obtained using different advanced DFT functionals were compared with our measurements but no one could satisfactorily reproduce our experimental data for NaCl-B1 and NaCl-B2 simultaneously. For all available DFT results on the principal shear moduli and anisotropy, the deviation became pronounced when the degree of compression increased significantly. Similar deviations could be also recognized for other cubic solids having the same B1-type structure and similar bonding, such as CaO, MgO, or (Mg1-x,Fex)O. Furthermore, the available experimental data suggest that the B1-B2 phase transition of NaCl and the above mentioned compounds are governed by the Born stability criterion C44(P) - P > 0.

Measuring Quantum Entanglement from Local Information by Machine Learning

Entanglement is a key property in the development of quantum technologies and in the study of quantum many-body simulations. However, entanglement measurement typically requires quantum full-state tomography (FST). Here we present a neural network-assisted protocol for measuring entanglement in equilibrium and non-equilibrium states of local Hamiltonians. Instead of FST, it can learn comprehensive entanglement quantities from single-qubit or two-qubit Pauli measurements, such as Rényi entropy, partially-transposed (PT) moments, and coherence. It is also exciting that our neural network is able to learn the future entanglement dynamics using only single-qubit traces from the previous time. In addition, we perform experiments using a nuclear spin quantum processor and train an adoptive neural network to study entanglement in the ground and dynamical states of a one-dimensional spin chain. Quantum phase transitions (QPT) are revealed by measuring static entanglement in ground states, and the entanglement dynamics beyond measurement time is accurately estimated in dynamical states. These precise results validate our neural network. Our work will have a wide range of applications in quantum many-body systems, from quantum phase transitions to intriguing non-equilibrium phenomena such as quantum thermalization.

Error estimation and adaptivity for stochastic collocation finite elements Part I: single-level approximation

A general adaptive refinement strategy for solving linear elliptic partial differential equation with random data is proposed and analysed herein. The adaptive strategy extends the a posteriori error estimation framework introduced by Guignard and Nobile in 2018 (SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 56, 3121--3143) to cover problems with a nonaffine parametric coefficient dependence. A suboptimal, but nonetheless reliable and convenient implementation of the strategy involves approximation of the decoupled PDE problems with a common finite element approximation space. Computational results obtained using such a single-level strategy are presented in this paper (part I). Results obtained using a potentially more efficient multilevel approximation strategy, where meshes are individually tailored, will be discussed in part II of this work. The codes used to generate the numerical results are available on GitHub

Confidence Matters: Inspecting Backdoors in Deep Neural Networks via Distribution Transfer

Backdoor attacks have been shown to be a serious security threat against deep learning models, and detecting whether a given model has been backdoored becomes a crucial task. Existing defenses are mainly built upon the observation that the backdoor trigger is usually of small size or affects the activation of only a few neurons. However, the above observations are violated in many cases especially for advanced backdoor attacks, hindering the performance and applicability of the existing defenses. In this paper, we propose a backdoor defense DTInspector built upon a new observation. That is, an effective backdoor attack usually requires high prediction confidence on the poisoned training samples, so as to ensure that the trained model exhibits the targeted behavior with a high probability. Based on this observation, DTInspector first learns a patch that could change the predictions of most high-confidence data, and then decides the existence of backdoor by checking the ratio of prediction changes after applying the learned patch on the low-confidence data. Extensive evaluations on five backdoor attacks, four datasets, and three advanced attacking types demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed defense.

Deep Learning Based Single Sample Per Person Face Recognition: A Survey

Face recognition has long been an active research area in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly since the rise of deep learning in recent years. In some practical situations, each identity has only a single sample available for training. Face recognition under this situation is referred to as single sample face recognition and poses significant challenges to the effective training of deep models. Therefore, in recent years, researchers have attempted to unleash more potential of deep learning and improve the model recognition performance in the single sample situation. While several comprehensive surveys have been conducted on traditional single sample face recognition approaches, emerging deep learning based methods are rarely involved in these reviews. Accordingly, we focus on the deep learning-based methods in this paper, classifying them into virtual sample methods and generic learning methods. In the former category, virtual images or virtual features are generated to benefit the training of the deep model. In the latter one, additional multi-sample generic sets are used. There are three types of generic learning methods: combining traditional methods and deep features, improving the loss function, and improving network structure, all of which are covered in our analysis. Moreover, we review face datasets that have been commonly used for evaluating single sample face recognition models and go on to compare the results of different types of models. Additionally, we discuss problems with existing single sample face recognition methods, including identity information preservation in virtual sample methods, domain adaption in generic learning methods. Furthermore, we regard developing unsupervised methods is a promising future direction, and point out that the semantic gap as an important issue that needs to be further considered.

Structure-aware Editable Morphable Model for 3D Facial Detail Animation and Manipulation

Morphable models are essential for the statistical modeling of 3D faces. Previous works on morphable models mostly focus on large-scale facial geometry but ignore facial details. This paper augments morphable models in representing facial details by learning a Structure-aware Editable Morphable Model (SEMM). SEMM introduces a detail structure representation based on the distance field of wrinkle lines, jointly modeled with detail displacements to establish better correspondences and enable intuitive manipulation of wrinkle structure. Besides, SEMM introduces two transformation modules to translate expression blendshape weights and age values into changes in latent space, allowing effective semantic detail editing while maintaining identity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed model compactly represents facial details, outperforms previous methods in expression animation qualitatively and quantitatively, and achieves effective age editing and wrinkle line editing of facial details. Code and model are available at https://github.com/gerwang/facial-detail-manipulation.

Predicting Axillary Lymph Node Metastasis in Early Breast Cancer Using Deep Learning on Primary Tumor Biopsy Slides

Objectives: To develop and validate a deep learning (DL)-based primary tumor biopsy signature for predicting axillary lymph node (ALN) metastasis preoperatively in early breast cancer (EBC) patients with clinically negative ALN. Methods: A total of 1,058 EBC patients with pathologically confirmed ALN status were enrolled from May 2010 to August 2020. A DL core-needle biopsy (DL-CNB) model was built on the attention-based multiple instance-learning (AMIL) framework to predict ALN status utilizing the DL features, which were extracted from the cancer areas of digitized whole-slide images (WSIs) of breast CNB specimens annotated by two pathologists. Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and areas under the ROC curve (AUCs) were analyzed to evaluate our model. Results: The best-performing DL-CNB model with VGG16_BN as the feature extractor achieved an AUC of 0.816 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.758, 0.865) in predicting positive ALN metastasis in the independent test cohort. Furthermore, our model incorporating the clinical data, which was called DL-CNB+C, yielded the best accuracy of 0.831 (95%CI: 0.775, 0.878), especially for patients younger than 50 years (AUC: 0.918, 95%CI: 0.825, 0.971). The interpretation of DL-CNB model showed that the top signatures most predictive of ALN metastasis were characterized by the nucleus features including density ($p$ = 0.015), circumference ($p$ = 0.009), circularity ($p$ = 0.010), and orientation ($p$ = 0.012). Conclusion: Our study provides a novel DL-based biomarker on primary tumor CNB slides to predict the metastatic status of ALN preoperatively for patients with EBC. Two-Dimensional DOA Estimation for L-shaped Nested Array via Tensor Modeling

The problem of two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for the L-shaped nested array is considered. Typically, the multi-dimensional structure of the received signal in co-array domain is ignored in the problem considered. Moreover, the cross term generated by the correlated signal and noise components degrades the 2-D DOA estimation performance seriously. To tackle these issues, an iterative 2-D DOA estimation approach based on tensor modeling is proposed. To develop such approach, a higher-order tensor is constructed, whose factor matrices contain the sources azimuth and elevation information. By exploiting the Vandermonde structure of the factor matrix, a computationally efficient tensor decomposition method is then developed to estimate the sources DOA information in each dimension independently. The pair-matching of the azimuth and elevation angles is conducted via the cross-correlation matrix (CCM) of the received signals. An iterative method is further designed to improve the DOA estimation performance. Specifically, the cross term is estimated and removed in the next step of such iterative procedure on the basis of the DOA estimates originated from the tensor decomposition in the previous step. As a consequence, the DOA estimation with better accuracy and higher resolution is obtained. The proposed iterative 2-D DOA estimation method for the L-shaped nested array can resolve more sources than the number of real elements, which is superior to conventional approaches. Simulation results validate the performance improvement of the proposed 2-D DOA estimation method as compared to existing state-of-the-art DOA estimation techniques for the L-shaped nested array.
