$Ab$ $initio$ electronic stopping power and threshold effect of channeled slow light ions in HfO$_{2}$

We present $ab$ $initio$ study of the electronic stopping power of protons and helium ions in an insulating material, HfO$_{2}$. The calculations are carried out in channeling conditions with different impact parameters by employing Ehrenfest dynamics and real--time, time--dependent density functional theory. The satisfactory comparison with available experiments demonstrates that this approach provides an accurate description of electronic stopping power. The velocity-proportional stopping power is predicted for protons and helium ions in the low energy region, which conforms the linear response theory. Due to the existence of wide band gap, a threshold effect in extremely low velocity regime below excitation is expected. For protons, the threshold velocity is observable, while it does not appear in helium ions case. This indicates the existence of extra energy loss channels beyond the electron--hole pair excitation when helium ions are moving through the crystal. To analyze it, we checked the charge state of the moving projectiles and an explicit charge exchange behavior between the ions and host atoms is found. The missing threshold effect for helium ions is attributed to the charge transfer, which also contributes to energy loss of the ion.

Attosecond probing of nuclear dynamics with trajectory-resolved high-harmonic spectroscopy

We report attosecond-scale probing of the laser-induced dynamics in molecules. We apply the method of high-harmonic spectroscopy, where laser-driven recolliding electrons on various trajec- tories record the motion of their parent ion. Based on the transient phase-matching mechanism of high-order harmonic generation, short and long trajectories contributing to the same harmonic order are distinguishable in both the spatial and frequency domains, giving rise to a one-to-one map between time and photon energy for each trajectory. The short and long trajectories in H2 and D2 are used simultaneously to retrieve the nuclear dynamics on the attosecond and angstrom scale. Compared to using only short trajectories, this extends the temporal range of the measurement to one optical cycle. The experiment is also applied to methane and ammonia molecules.

Joint Extraction of Entities and Relations Based on a Novel Tagging Scheme

Joint extraction of entities and relations is an important task in information extraction. To tackle this problem, we firstly propose a novel tagging scheme that can convert the joint extraction task to a tagging problem. Then, based on our tagging scheme, we study different end-to-end models to extract entities and their relations directly, without identifying entities and relations separately. We conduct experiments on a public dataset produced by distant supervision method and the experimental results show that the tagging based methods are better than most of the existing pipelined and joint learning methods. What's more, the end-to-end model proposed in this paper, achieves the best results on the public dataset.

Regularizing Face Verification Nets For Pain Intensity Regression

Limited labeled data are available for the research of estimating facial expression intensities. For instance, the ability to train deep networks for automated pain assessment is limited by small datasets with labels of patient-reported pain intensities. Fortunately, fine-tuning from a data-extensive pre-trained domain, such as face verification, can alleviate this problem. In this paper, we propose a network that fine-tunes a state-of-the-art face verification network using a regularized regression loss and additional data with expression labels. In this way, the expression intensity regression task can benefit from the rich feature representations trained on a huge amount of data for face verification. The proposed regularized deep regressor is applied to estimate the pain expression intensity and verified on the widely-used UNBC-McMaster Shoulder-Pain dataset, achieving the state-of-the-art performance. A weighted evaluation metric is also proposed to address the imbalance issue of different pain intensities.

High Performance Negative Database for Massive Data Management System of The Mingantu Spectral Radioheliograph

As a dedicated synthetic aperture radio interferometer, the MingantU SpEctral Radioheliograph (MUSER), initially known as the Chinese Spectral RadioHeliograph (CSRH), has entered the stage of routine observation. More than 23 million data records per day need to be effectively managed to provide high performance data query and retrieval for scientific data reduction. In light of these massive amounts of data generated by the MUSER, in this paper, a novel data management technique called the negative database (ND) is proposed and used to implement a data management system for the MUSER. Based on the key-value database, the ND technique makes complete utilization of the complement set of observational data to derive the requisite information. Experimental results showed that the proposed ND can significantly reduce storage volume in comparison with a relational database management system (RDBMS). Even when considering the time needed to derive records that were absent, its overall performance, including querying and deriving the data of the ND, is comparable with that of an RDBMS. The ND technique effectively solves the problem of massive data storage for the MUSER, and is a valuable reference for the massive data management required in next-generation telescopes.

On The Waiting Time for A M/M/1 Queue with Impatience

This paper focuses on the problem of modeling the correspondence pattern for ordinary people. Suppose that letters arrive at a rate $λ$ and are answered at a rate $μ$. Furthermore, we assume that, for a constant $T$, a letter is disregarded when its waiting time exceeds $T$, and the remains are answered in {\it last in first out} order. Let $W_n$ be the waiting time of the $n$-th {\it answered} letter. It is proved that $W_n$ converges weekly to $W_T$, a non-negative random variable which possesses a density with {\it power-law} tail when $λ=μ$ and with exponential tail otherwise. Note that this may provide a reasonable explanation to the phenomenons reported by Oliveira and Barabási in \cite{OB}.

Diffractive molecular orbital tomography

High harmonic generation in the interaction of femtosecond lasers with atoms and molecules opens the path to molecular orbital tomography and to probe the electronic dynamics with attosecond-Ångström resolutions. Molecular orbital tomography requires both the amplitude and phase of the high harmonics. Yet the measurement of phases requires sophisticated techniques and represents formidable challenges at present. Here we report a novel scheme, called diffractive molecular orbital tomography, to retrieve the molecular orbital solely from the amplitude of high harmonics without measuring any phase information. We have applied this method to image the molecular orbitals of N$_2$, CO$_2$ and C$_2$H$_2$. The retrieved orbital is further improved by taking account the correction of Coulomb potential. The diffractive molecular orbital tomography scheme, removing the roadblock of phase measurement, significantly simplifies the molecular orbital tomography procedure and paves an efficient and robust way to the imaging of more complex molecules.

DALiuGE: A Graph Execution Framework for Harnessing the Astronomical Data Deluge

The Data Activated Liu Graph Engine - DALiuGE - is an execution framework for processing large astronomical datasets at a scale required by the Square Kilometre Array Phase 1 (SKA1). It includes an interface for expressing complex data reduction pipelines consisting of both data sets and algorithmic components and an implementation run-time to execute such pipelines on distributed resources. By mapping the logical view of a pipeline to its physical realisation, DALiuGE separates the concerns of multiple stakeholders, allowing them to collectively optimise large-scale data processing solutions in a coherent manner. The execution in DALiuGE is data-activated, where each individual data item autonomously triggers the processing on itself. Such decentralisation also makes the execution framework very scalable and flexible, supporting pipeline sizes ranging from less than ten tasks running on a laptop to tens of millions of concurrent tasks on the second fastest supercomputer in the world. DALiuGE has been used in production for reducing interferometry data sets from the Karl E. Jansky Very Large Array and the Mingantu Ultrawide Spectral Radioheliograph; and is being developed as the execution framework prototype for the Science Data Processor (SDP) consortium of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope. This paper presents a technical overview of DALiuGE and discusses case studies from the CHILES and MUSER projects that use DALiuGE to execute production pipelines. In a companion paper, we provide in-depth analysis of DALiuGE's scalability to very large numbers of tasks on two supercomputing facilities.

REEL-BF Design: Achieving the SDP Bound for Downlink Beamforming with Arbitrary Shaping Constraints

This paper considers the beamforming design for a multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink with an arbitrary number of (context-specific) shaping constraints. In this setup, the state-of-the-art beamforming schemes cannot attain the well-known performance bound promised by the semidefinite program (SDP) relaxation technique. To close the gap, we propose a redundant-signal embedded linear beamforming (REEL-BF) scheme, where each user is assigned with one information beamformer and several shaping beamformers. It is shown that the proposed REEL-BF scheme can perform general rank-$K$ beamforming for user symbols in a low-complexity and structured manner. In addition, sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee that the REEL-BF scheme always achieves the SDP bound for linear beamforming schemes. Based on such conditions, an efficient algorithm is then developed to obtain the optimal REEL-BF solution in polynomial time. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme enjoys substantial performance gains over the existing alternatives.

Strain-modulated Bandgap and Piezo-resistive Effect in Black Phosphorus Field-effect Transistors

Energy bandgap largely determines the optical and electronic properties of a semiconductor. Variable bandgap therefore makes versatile functionality possible in a single material. In layered material black phosphorus, the bandgap can be modulated by the number of layers; as a result, few-layer black phosphorus has discrete bandgap values that are relevant for opto-electronic applications in the spectral range from red, in monolayer, to mid-infrared in the bulk limit. Here, we further demonstrate continuous bandgap modulation by mechanical strain applied through flexible substrates. The strain-modulated bandgap significantly alters the charge transport in black phosphorus at room temperature; we for the first time observe a large piezo-resistive effect in black phosphorus field-effect transistors (FETs). The effect opens up opportunities for future development of electro-mechanical transducers based on black phosphorus, and we demonstrate strain gauges constructed from black phosphorus thin crystals.

Objective Image Quality Assessment for High Resolution Photospheric Images by Median Filter Gradient Similarity

All next generation ground-based and space-based solar telescopes require a good quality assessment metric in order to evaluate their imaging performance. In this paper, a new image quality metric, the median filter gradient similarity (MFGS) is proposed for photospheric images. MFGS is a no-reference/blind objective image quality metric (IQM) by a measurement result between 0 and 1 and has been performed on short-exposure photospheric images captured by the New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) of the Fuxian Solar Observatory and by the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) onboard the Hinode satellite, respectively. The results show that: (1)the measured value of MFGS changes monotonically from 1 to 0 with degradation of image quality; (2)there exists a linear correlation between the measured values of MFGS and root-mean-square-contrast (RMS-contrast) of granulation; (3)MFGS is less affected by the image contents than the granular RMS-contrast. Overall, MFGS is a good alternative for the quality assessment of photospheric images.

OpenCluster: A Flexible Distributed Computing Framework for Astronomical Data Processing

The volume of data generated by modern astronomical telescopes is extremely large and rapidly growing. However, current high-performance data processing architectures/frameworks are not well suited for astronomers because of their limitations and programming difficulties. In this paper, we therefore present OpenCluster, an open-source distributed computing framework to support rapidly developing high-performance processing pipelines of astronomical big data. We first detail the OpenCluster design principles and implementations and present the APIs facilitated by the framework. We then demonstrate a case in which OpenCluster is used to resolve complex data processing problems for developing a pipeline for the Mingantu Ultrawide Spectral Radioheliograph. Finally, we present our OpenCluster performance evaluation. Overall, OpenCluster provides not only high fault tolerance and simple programming interfaces, but also a flexible means of scaling up the number of interacting entities. OpenCluster thereby provides an easily integrated distributed computing framework for quickly developing a high-performance data processing system of astronomical telescopes and for significantly reducing software development expenses.

High Performance Parallel Image Reconstruction for New Vacuum Solar Telescope

Many technologies have been developed to help improve spatial resolution of observational images for ground-based solar telescopes, such as adaptive optics (AO) systems and post-processing reconstruction. As any AO system correction is only partial, it is indispensable to use post-processing reconstruction techniques. In the New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST), speckle masking method is used to achieve the diffraction limited resolution of the telescope. Although the method is very promising, the computation is quite intensive, and the amount of data is tremendous, requiring several months to reconstruct observational data of one day on a high-end computer. To accelerate image reconstruction, we parallelize the program package on a high performance cluster. We describe parallel implementation details for several reconstruction procedures. The code is written in C language using Message Passing Interface (MPI) and optimized for parallel processing in a multi-processor environment. We show the excellent performance of parallel implementation, and the whole data processing speed is about 71 times faster than before. Finally, we analyze the scalability of the code to find possible bottlenecks, and propose several ways to further improve the parallel performance. We conclude that the presented program is capable of executing in real-time reconstruction applications at NVST.

Low-cost high performance distributed data storage for multi-channel observations

The New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) is a 1-m solar telescope that aims to observe the fine structures in both the photosphere and the chromosphere of the Sun. The observational data acquired simultaneously from one channel for the chromosphere and two channels for the photosphere bring great challenges to the data storage of NVST. The multi-channel instruments of NVST, including scientific cameras and multi-band spectrometers, generate at least 3 terabytes data per day and require high access performance while storing massive short-exposure images. It is worth studying and implementing a storage system for NVST which would balance the data availability, access performance and the cost of development. In this paper, we build a distributed data storage system (DDSS) for NVST and then deeply evaluate the availability of real-time data storage on a distributed computing environment. The experimental results show that two factors, i.e., the number of concurrent read/write and the file size, are critically important for improving the performance of data access on a distributed environment. Referring to these two factors, three strategies for storing FITS files are presented and implemented to ensure the access performance of the DDSS under conditions of multi-host write and read simultaneously. The real applications of the DDSS proves that the system is capable of meeting the requirements of NVST real-time high performance observational data storage. Our study on the DDSS is the first attempt for modern astronomical telescope systems to store real-time observational data on a low-cost distributed system. The research results and corresponding techniques of the DDSS provide a new option for designing real-time massive astronomical data storage system and will be a reference for future astronomical data storage.

NVST data archiving system based on fastbit nosql database

The New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) is a 1-meter vacuum solar telescope that aims to observe the fine structures of active regions on the Sun. The main tasks of the NVST are high resolution imaging and spectral observations, including the measurements of the solar magnetic field. The NVST has been collecting more than 20 million FITS files since it began routine observations in 2012 and produces a maximum observational records of 120 thousand files in a day. Given the large amount of files, the effective archiving and retrieval of files becomes a critical and urgent problem. In this study, we implement a new data archiving system for the NVST based on the Fastbit Not Only Structured Query Language (NoSQL) database. Comparing to the relational database (i.e., MySQL; My Structured Query Language), the Fastbit database manifests distinctive advantages on indexing and querying performance. In a large scale database of 40 million records, the multi-field combined query response time of Fastbit database is about 15 times faster and fully meets the requirements of the NVST. Our study brings a new idea for massive astronomical data archiving and would contribute to the design of data management systems for other astronomical telescopes.

Observation of Ultralong Valley Lifetime in WSe2/MoS2 Heterostructures

The valley degree of freedom in two-dimensional (2D) crystals recently emerged as a novel information carrier in addition to spin and charge. The intrinsic valley lifetime in 2D transition metal dichalcoginides (TMD) is expected to be remarkably long due to the unique spin-valley locking behavior, where the inter-valley scattering of electron requires simultaneously a large momentum transfer to the opposite valley and a flip of the electron spin. The experimentally observed valley lifetime in 2D TMDs, however, has been limited to tens of nanoseconds so far. Here we report efficient generation of microsecond-long lived valley polarization in WSe2/MoS2 heterostructures by exploiting the ultrafast charge transfer processes in the heterostructure that efficiently creates resident holes in the WSe2 layer. These valley-polarized holes exhibit near unity valley polarization and ultralong valley lifetime: we observe a valley-polarized hole population lifetime of over 1 us, and a valley depolarization lifetime (i.e. inter-valley scattering lifetime) over 40 us at 10 Kelvin. The near-perfect generation of valley-polarized holes in TMD heterostructures with ultralong valley lifetime, orders of magnitude longer than previous results, opens up new opportunities for novel valleytronics and spintronics applications.

Community Detection Algorithm Evaluation using Size and Hashtags

Understanding community structure in social media is critical due to its broad applications such as friend recommendations, link predictions and collaborative filtering. However, there is no widely accepted definition of community in literature. Existing work use structure related metrics such as modularity and function related metrics such as ground truth to measure the performance of community detection algorithms, while ignoring an important metric, size of the community. [1] suggests that the size of community with strong ties in social media should be limited to 150. As we discovered in this paper, the majority of the communities obtained by many popular community detection algorithms are either very small or very large. Too small communities don't have practical value and too large communities contain weak connections therefore not stable. In this paper, we compare various community detection algorithms considering the following metrics: size of the communities, coverage of the communities, extended modularity, triangle participation ratio, and user interest in the same community. We also propose a simple clique based algorithm for community detection as a baseline for the comparison. Experimental results show that both our proposed algorithm and the well-accepted disjoint algorithm InfoMap perform well in all the metrics.
