Dual Ask-Answer Network for Machine Reading Comprehension

There are three modalities in the reading comprehension setting: question, answer and context. The task of question answering or question generation aims to infer an answer or a question when given the counterpart based on context. We present a novel two-way neural sequence transduction model that connects three modalities, allowing it to learn two tasks simultaneously and mutually benefit one another. During training, the model receives question-context-answer triplets as input and captures the cross-modal interaction via a hierarchical attention process. Unlike previous joint learning paradigms that leverage the duality of question generation and question answering at data level, we solve such dual tasks at the architecture level by mirroring the network structure and partially sharing components at different layers. This enables the knowledge to be transferred from one task to another, helping the model to find a general representation for each modality. The evaluation on four public datasets shows that our dual-learning model outperforms the mono-learning counterpart as well as the state-of-the-art joint models on both question answering and question generation tasks.

First Investigation on the Radiation Field of the Gas-Filled Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum

A novel ignition hohlraum named three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) is designed for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. TACH is a kind of 6 laser entrance holes (LEHs) hohlraum, which is orthogonally jointed of three cylindrical hohlraums. The first experiment on the radiation field of TACH was performed on Shenguang III laser facility. 24 laser beams were elected and injected into 6 LEHs quasi-symmetrically. Total laser energy was about 59 kJ, and the peak radiation temperature reached about 192 eV. Radiation temperature and pinhole images in gas-filled hohlraum are largely identical but with minor differences with those in vacuum hohlraum. All laser energy can be totally delivered into hohlraum in 3 ns duration even without filled gas in the hohlraum of 1.4 mm diameter. Plasma filling cannot be obviously suppressed even with 0.5 atm pressure gas in the small hohlraum. Backscattering fractions of vacuum hohlraum and gas-filled hohlraum are both lower than 2%. Experimental study of this new kind of hohlraum can provide guidance for future target design and implosion experiment.

Multi-Antenna NOMA for Computation Offloading in Multiuser Mobile Edge Computing Systems

This paper studies a multiuser mobile edge computing (MEC) system, in which one base station (BS) serves multiple users with intensive computation tasks. We exploit the multi-antenna non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique for multiuser computation offloading, such that different users can simultaneously offload their computation tasks to the multi-antenna BS over the same time/frequency resources, and the BS can employ successive interference cancellation (SIC) to efficiently decode all users' offloaded tasks for remote execution. We aim to minimize the weighted sum-energy consumption at all users subject to their computation latency constraints, by jointly optimizing the communication and computation resource allocation as well as the BS's decoding order for SIC. For the case with partial offloading, the weighted sum-energy minimization is a convex optimization problem, for which an efficient algorithm based on the Lagrange duality method is presented to obtain the globally optimal solution. For the case with binary offloading, the weighted sum-energy minimization corresponds to a {\em mixed Boolean convex problem} that is generally more difficult to be solved. We first use the branch-and-bound (BnB) method to obtain the globally optimal solution, and then develop two low-complexity algorithms based on the greedy method and the convex relaxation, respectively, to find suboptimal solutions with high quality in practice. Via numerical results, it is shown that the proposed NOMA-based computation offloading design significantly improves the energy efficiency of the multiuser MEC system as compared to other benchmark schemes. It is also shown that for the case with binary offloading, the proposed greedy method performs close to the optimal BnB based solution, and the convex relaxation based solution achieves a suboptimal performance but with lower implementation complexity.

Cascaded Mutual Modulation for Visual Reasoning

Visual reasoning is a special visual question answering problem that is multi-step and compositional by nature, and also requires intensive text-vision interactions. We propose CMM: Cascaded Mutual Modulation as a novel end-to-end visual reasoning model. CMM includes a multi-step comprehension process for both question and image. In each step, we use a Feature-wise Linear Modulation (FiLM) technique to enable textual/visual pipeline to mutually control each other. Experiments show that CMM significantly outperforms most related models, and reach state-of-the-arts on two visual reasoning benchmarks: CLEVR and NLVR, collected from both synthetic and natural languages. Ablation studies confirm that both our multistep framework and our visual-guided language modulation are critical to the task. Our code is available at https://github.com/FlamingHorizon/CMM-VR.

Wireless Powered User Cooperative Computation in Mobile Edge Computing Systems

This paper studies a wireless powered mobile edge computing (MEC) system, where a dedicated energy transmitter (ET) uses the radio-frequency (RF) signal enabled wireless power transfer (WPT) to charge wireless devices for sustainable computation. In such a system, we present a new user cooperation approach to improve the computation performance of active devices, in which surrounding idle devices are enabled as helpers to use their opportunistically harvested wireless energy from the ET to help remotely execute active users' computation tasks. In particular, we consider a basic scenario with one user (with computation tasks to execute) and multiple helpers, in which the user can partition the computation tasks into various parts for local execution and computation offloading to helpers, respectively. Both the user and helpers are subject to the so-called energy neutrality constraints, such that their energy consumption does not exceed the respective energy harvested from the ET. Under this setup and considering a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) based computation offloading protocol, we maximize the computation rate (i.e., the number of computation bits over a particular time block) of the user, by jointly optimizing the transmit energy beamforming at the ET, as well as the communication and computation resource allocations at both the user and helpers. By leveraging the Lagrange duality method, we present the optimal solution to this problem in a semi-closed form. Numerical results show that the proposed wireless powered user cooperative computation design significantly improves the computation rate at the user, as compared to conventional schemes without such cooperation.

First Integrated Implosion Experiment of Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum at the SGIII Laser Facility

The first integrated implosion experiment of three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) was accomplished at the SGIII laser facility. 24 laser beams of the SGIII laser facility were carefully chosen and quasi-symmetrically injected into the TACH, in which a highly symmetric radiation filed was generated with a peak radiation temperature of ~190eV. Driven by the radiation field, the neutron yield of a deuterium gas filled capsule reached ~1e9, and the corresponding yield over clean (YOC) was ~40% for a convergence ratio (Cr) of ~17. The X-ray self-emission image of imploded capsule cores was nearly round, and the backscatter fraction of laser beams was less than 1.25%. This experiment preliminarily demonstrated the major performance of TACH, such as the robustness of symmetry, and a laser plasma instability (LPI) behavior similar to that of the outer ring of traditional cylindrical hohlraum.

Optimal Pricing of User-Initiated Data-Plan Sharing in A Roaming Market

A smartphone user's personal hotspot (pH) allows him to share cellular connection to another (e.g., a traveler) in the vicinity, but such sharing consumes the limited data quota in his two-part tariff plan and may lead to overage charge. This paper studies how to motivate such pH-enabled data-plan sharing between local users and travelers in the ever-growing roaming markets, and proposes pricing incentive for a data-plan buyer to reward surrounding pH sellers (if any). The pricing scheme practically takes into account the information uncertainty at the traveler side, including the random mobility and the sharing cost distribution of selfish local users who potentially share pHs. Though the pricing optimization problem is non-convex, we show that there always exists a unique optimal price to tradeoff between the successful sharing opportunity and the sharing price. We further generalize the optimal pricing to the case of heterogeneous selling pHs who have diverse data usage behaviors in the sharing cost distributions, and we show such diversity may or may not benefit the traveler. Lacking selfish pHs' information, the traveler's expected cost is higher than that under the complete information, but the gap diminishes as the pHs' spatial density increases. Finally, we analyze the challenging scenario that multiple travelers overlap for demanding data-plan sharing, by resorting to a near-optimal pricing scheme. We show that a traveler suffers as the travelers' spatial density increases.

Survey and Test Environment for ITER EPP#12 Electrical Components

The purpose of Equatorial Port Plug 12 (EPP#12) for International thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) is to provide a common platform and interface, support or constrainer for five diagnostic plant systems and one glow discharging cleaning system (GDC). As EPP#12 integrator, a team from Institute of plasma physics Chinese of Sciences (CASIPP) performs the design work. The Instrument and Control(I&C) is an important part of system design. The main I&C functions will be implemented include temperature measurements of the port structures, electrical heater with temperature control during baking of windows and providing spare input measurement channel. The integrator should provide the embedded temperature sensors, associated cabling, electrical connectors and electrical feedthrough. Most electrical components will be deployed in port plug structure which is a harsh environment for electrical components. In this paper, we present the survey and research of electrical components for ITER EPP#12. And the design and implement of a test environment for electrical components which is based-on ITER CODAC is also described.

Gate-Tunable Topological Flat Bands in Trilayer Graphene-Boron Nitride Moiré Superlattices

We investigate the electronic structure of the flat bands induced by moiré superlattices and electric fields in nearly aligned ABC trilayer graphene-boron nitride interfaces where Coulomb effects can lead to correlated gapped phases. Our calculations indicate that valley-spin resolved isolated superlattice flat bands that carry a finite Chern number $C = 3$ proportional to layer number can appear near charge neutrality for appropriate perpendicular electric fields and twist angles. When the degeneracy of the bands is lifted by Coulomb interactions these topological bands can lead to anomalous quantum Hall phases that embody orbital and spin magnetism. Narrow bandwidths of $\sim10$ meV achievable for a continuous range of twist angles $θ\lesssim 0.6^{\circ}$ with moderate interlayer potential differences of $\sim$50 meV make the TLG/BN systems a promising platform for the study of electric-field tunable Coulomb interaction driven spontaneous Hall phases.

Additive Margin Softmax for Face Verification

In this paper, we propose a conceptually simple and geometrically interpretable objective function, i.e. additive margin Softmax (AM-Softmax), for deep face verification. In general, the face verification task can be viewed as a metric learning problem, so learning large-margin face features whose intra-class variation is small and inter-class difference is large is of great importance in order to achieve good performance. Recently, Large-margin Softmax and Angular Softmax have been proposed to incorporate the angular margin in a multiplicative manner. In this work, we introduce a novel additive angular margin for the Softmax loss, which is intuitively appealing and more interpretable than the existing works. We also emphasize and discuss the importance of feature normalization in the paper. Most importantly, our experiments on LFW BLUFR and MegaFace show that our additive margin softmax loss consistently performs better than the current state-of-the-art methods using the same network architecture and training dataset. Our code has also been made available at https://github.com/happynear/AMSoftmax

HyTasker: Hybrid Task Allocation in Mobile Crowd Sensing

Task allocation is a major challenge in Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS). While previous task allocation approaches follow either the opportunistic or participatory mode, this paper proposes to integrate these two complementary modes in a two-phased hybrid framework called HyTasker. In the offline phase, a group of workers (called opportunistic workers) are selected, and they complete MCS tasks during their daily routines (i.e., opportunistic mode). In the online phase, we assign another set of workers (called participatory workers) and require them to move specifically to perform tasks that are not completed by the opportunistic workers (i.e., participatory mode). Instead of considering these two phases separately, HyTasker jointly optimizes them with a total incentive budget constraint. In particular, when selecting opportunistic workers in the offline phase of HyTasker, we propose a novel algorithm that simultaneously considers the predicted task assignment for the participatory workers, in which the density and mobility of participatory workers are taken into account. Experiments on a real-world mobility dataset demonstrate that HyTasker outperforms other methods with more completed tasks under the same budget constraint.

Social-Network-Assisted Worker Recruitment in Mobile Crowd Sensing

Worker recruitment is a crucial research problem in Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS). While previous studies rely on a specified platform with a pre-assumed large user pool, this paper leverages the influenced propagation on the social network to assist the MCS worker recruitment. We first select a subset of users on the social network as initial seeds and push MCS tasks to them. Then, influenced users who accept tasks are recruited as workers, and the ultimate goal is to maximize the coverage. Specifically, to select a near-optimal set of seeds, we propose two algorithms, named Basic-Selector and Fast-Selector, respectively. Basic-Selector adopts an iterative greedy process based on the predicted mobility, which has good performance but suffers from inefficiency concerns. To accelerate the selection, Fast-Selector is proposed, which is based on the interdependency of geographical positions among friends. Empirical studies on two real-world datasets verify that Fast-Selector achieves higher coverage than baseline methods under various settings, meanwhile, it is much more efficient than Basic-Selector while only sacrificing a slight fraction of the coverage.

Well-posedness and peakons for a higher-order $μ$-Camassa-Holm equation

In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of a higher-order $μ$-Camassa-Holm equation. By employing the Green's function of $(μ-\partial_{x}^{2})^{-2}$, we obtain the explicit formula of the inverse function $(μ-\partial_{x}^{2})^{-2}w$ and local well-posedness for the equation in Sobolev spaces $H^{s}(\mathbb{S})$, $s>\frac{7}{2}$. Then we prove the existence of global strong solutions and weak solutions. Moreover, we show that the data-to-solution map is Hölder continuous in $H^{s}(\mathbb{S})$, $s\geq 4$, equipped with the $H^{r}(\mathbb{S})$-topology for $0\leq r<s$. Finally, the equation is shown to admit single peakon solutions which have continuous second derivatives and jump discontinuities in the third derivatives.

Continuity properties of the data-to-solution map for the two-component higher order Camassa-Holm system

This work studies the Cauchy problem of a two-component higher order Camassa-Holm system, which is well-posed in Sobolev spaces $H^{s}(\mathbb{R})\times H^{s-2}(\mathbb{R})$, $s>\frac{7}{2}$ and its solution map is continuous. We show that the solution map is Hölder continuous in $H^{s}(\mathbb{R})\times H^{s-2}(\mathbb{R})$ equipped with the $H^{r}(\mathbb{R})\times H^{r-2}(\mathbb{R})$-topology for $1\leq r<s$, and the Hölder exponent is expressed in terms of $s$ and $r$.

KRust: A Formal Executable Semantics of Rust

Rust is a new and promising high-level system programming language. It provides both memory safety and thread safety through its novel mechanisms such as ownership, moves and borrows. Ownership system ensures that at any point there is only one owner of any given resource. The ownership of a resource can be moved or borrowed according to the lifetimes. The ownership system establishes a clear lifetime for each value and hence does not necessarily need garbage collection. These novel features bring Rust high performance, fine low-level control of C and C++, and unnecessity in garbage collection, which differ Rust from other existing prevalent languages. For formal analysis of Rust programs and helping programmers learn its new mechanisms and features, a formal semantics of Rust is desired and useful as a fundament for developing related tools. In this paper, we present a formal executable operational semantics of a realistic subset of Rust, called KRust. The semantics is defined in K, a rewriting-based executable semantic framework for programming languages. The executable semantics yields automatically a formal interpreter and verification tools for Rust programs. KRust has been thoroughly validated by testing with hundreds of tests, including the official Rust test suite.

Unsupervised Neural Machine Translation with Weight Sharing

Unsupervised neural machine translation (NMT) is a recently proposed approach for machine translation which aims to train the model without using any labeled data. The models proposed for unsupervised NMT often use only one shared encoder to map the pairs of sentences from different languages to a shared-latent space, which is weak in keeping the unique and internal characteristics of each language, such as the style, terminology, and sentence structure. To address this issue, we introduce an extension by utilizing two independent encoders but sharing some partial weights which are responsible for extracting high-level representations of the input sentences. Besides, two different generative adversarial networks (GANs), namely the local GAN and global GAN, are proposed to enhance the cross-language translation. With this new approach, we achieve significant improvements on English-German, English-French and Chinese-to-English translation tasks.

Precise Temporal Action Localization by Evolving Temporal Proposals

Locating actions in long untrimmed videos has been a challenging problem in video content analysis. The performances of existing action localization approaches remain unsatisfactory in precisely determining the beginning and the end of an action. Imitating the human perception procedure with observations and refinements, we propose a novel three-phase action localization framework. Our framework is embedded with an Actionness Network to generate initial proposals through frame-wise similarity grouping, and then a Refinement Network to conduct boundary adjustment on these proposals. Finally, the refined proposals are sent to a Localization Network for further fine-grained location regression. The whole process can be deemed as multi-stage refinement using a novel non-local pyramid feature under various temporal granularities. We evaluate our framework on THUMOS14 benchmark and obtain a significant improvement over the state-of-the-arts approaches. Specifically, the performance gain is remarkable under precise localization with high IoU thresholds. Our proposed framework achieves mAP@IoU=0.5 of 34.2%.
