Epitaxial growth of large-gap quantum spin Hall insulator on semiconductor surface

Formation of topological quantum phase on conventional semiconductor surface is of both scientific and technological interest. Here, we demonstrate epitaxial growth of 2D topological insulator, i.e. quantum spin Hall (QSH) state, on Si(111) surface with a large energy gap, based on first-principles calculations. We show that Si(111) surface functionalized with 1/3 monolayer of halogen atoms [Si(111)-sqrt(3) x sqrt(3)-X (X=Cl, Br, I)] exhibiting a trigonal superstructure, provides an ideal template for epitaxial growth of heavy metals, such as Bi, which self-assemble into a hexagonal lattice with high kinetic and thermodynamic stability. Most remarkably, the Bi overlayer is "atomically" bonded to but "electronically" decoupled from the underlying Si substrate, exhibiting isolated QSH state with an energy gap as large as 0.8 eV. This surprising phenomenon is originated from an intriguing substrate orbital filtering effect, which critically select the orbital composition around the Fermi level leading to different topological phases. Particularly, the substrate-orbital-filtering effect converts the otherwise topologically trivial freestanding Bi lattice into a nontrivial phase; while the reverse is true for Au lattice. The underlying physical mechanism is generally applicable, opening a new and exciting avenue for exploration of large-gap topological surface/interface states.

General bounds for quantum discord and discord distance

For any bipartite state, how strongly can one subsystem be quantum correlated with another? Using the Koashi-Winter relation, we study the upper bound of purified quantum discord, which is given by the sum of the von Neumann entropy of the unmeasured subsystem and the entanglement of formation shared between the unmeasured subsystem with the environment. In particular, we find that the Luo et al.'s conjecture on the quantum correlations and the Lindblad conjecture are all ture, when the entanglement of formation vanishes. Let the difference between the left discord and the right discord be captured by the discord distance. If the Lindblad conjecture is true, we show that the joint entropy is a tight upper bound for the discord distance. Further, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for saturating upper bounds of purified quantum discord and discord distance separately with the equality conditions for the Araki-Lieb inequality and the Lindblad conjecture. Furthermore, we show that the subadditive relation holds for any bipartite quantum discord.

sd2 Graphene: Kagome Band in Hexagonal lattice

Graphene, made of sp2 hybridized carbon, is characterized with a Dirac band, representative of its underlying 2D hexagonal lattice. Fundamental understanding of graphene has recently spurred a surge of searching for 2D topological quantum phases in solid-state materials. Here, we propose a new form of 2D material, consisting of sd2 hybridized transition metal atoms in hexagonal lattice, called sd2 graphene. The sd2 graphene is characterized with bond-centered electronic hopping, which transforms the apparent atomic hexagonal lattice into the physics of kagome lattice that may exhibit a wide range of topological quantum phases. Based on first-principles calculations, room temperature quantum anomalous Hall states with an energy gap of 0.1 eV are demonstrated for one such lattice made of W, which can be epitaxially grown on a semiconductor surface of 1/3 monolayer Cl-covered Si(111), with high thermodynamic and kinetic stability.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for positive semidefinite quantum mutual information matrices

For any $n$-partite state $ρ_{A_{1}A_{2}\cdot\cdot\cdot A_{n}}$, we define its quantum mutual information matrix as an $n$ by $n$ matrix whose $(i,j)$-entry is given by quantum mutual information $I(ρ_{A_{i}A_{j}})$. Although each entry of quantum mutual information matrix, like its classical counterpart, is also used to measure bipartite correlations, the similarity ends here: quantum mutual information matrices are not always positive semidefinite even for collections of up to 3-partite states. In this work, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the positive semidefinite quantum mutual information matrix. We further define the \emph{genuine} $n$-partite mutual information which can be easily calculated. This definition is symmetric, nonnegative, bounded and more accurate for measuring multipartite states.

Tuning Fe Nucleation Density with Charge Doping of Graphene Substrate

We have demonstrated that the island nucleation in the initial stage of epitaxial thin film growth can be tuned by substrate surface charge doping. This charge effect was investigated using spin density functional theory calculation in Fe-deposition on graphene substrate as an example. It was found that hole-doping can apparently increase both Fe-adatom diffusion barrier and Fe inter-adatom repulsion energy occurring at intermediate separation, whereas electron-doping can decrease Fe-adatom diffusion barrier but only slightly modify inter-adatom repulsion energy. Further kinetic Monte Carlo simulation showed that the nucleation island density can be increased up to ten times larger under hole-doping and can be decreased down to ten times smaller than that without doping. Our findings indicates a new route to tailoring the growth morphology of magnetic metal nanostructure for spintronics applications via surface charge doping.

Exotic electronic states in the world of flat bands: from theory to material

It has long been noticed that special lattices contain single-electron flat bands (FB) without any dispersion. Since the kinetic energy of electrons is quenched in the FB, this highly degenerate energy level becomes an ideal platform to achieve strongly correlated electronic states, such as magnetism, superconductivity and Wigner crystal. Recently, the FB has attracted increasing interests, because of the possibility to go beyond the conventional symmetry-breaking phases, towards topologically ordered phases, such as lattice versions of fractional quantum Hall states. This article reviews different aspects of FBs in a nutshell. Starting from the standard band theory, we aim to bridge the frontier of FBs with the textbook solid-state physics. Then, based on concrete examples, we show the common origin of FBs in terms of destructive interference, and discuss various many-body phases associated with such a singular band structure. In the end, we demonstrate real FBs in quantum frustrated materials and organometallic frameworks.

Orbit- and Atom-Resolved Spin Textures of Intrinsic, Extrinsic and Hybridized Dirac Cone States

Combining first-principles calculations and spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, we identify the helical spin textures for three different Dirac cone states in the interfaced systems of a 2D topological insulator (TI) of Bi(111) bilayer and a 3D TI Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3. The spin texture is found to be the same for the intrinsic Dirac cone of Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 surface state, the extrinsic Dirac cone of Bi bilayer state induced by Rashba effect, and the hybridized Dirac cone between the former two states. Further orbit- and atom-resolved analysis shows that s and pz orbits have a clockwise (counterclockwise) spin rotation tangent to the iso-energy contour of upper (lower) Dirac cone, while px and py orbits have an additional radial spin component. The Dirac cone states may reside on different atomic layers, but have the same spin texture. Our results suggest that the unique spin texture of Dirac cone states is a signature property of spin-orbit coupling, independent of topology.

Giant Rashba-Spin Splitting of Bi(111) Bilayer on Large Band Gap $β-$In$_2$Se$_3$

Experimentally it is still challenging to epitaxially grow Bi(111) bilayer (BL) on conventional semiconductor substrate. Here, we propose a substrate of $β-$In$_2$Se$_3$(0001) with van der Waals like cleavage and large band gap of 1.2~eV. We have investigated the electronic structure of BL on one quintuple-layer (QL) $β-$In$_2$Se$_3$(0001) using density functional theory calculation. It is found that the intermediate hybridization between BL and one QL $β-$In$_2$Se$_3$(0001) results in the formation of bands with giant Rashba spin splitting in the large band gap of the substrate. Furthermore the Rashba parameter $α_R$ can be increased significantly by tensile strain of substrate. Our findings provide a good candidate substrate for BL growth to experimentally realize spin splitting Rashba states with insignificant effect of spin degenerate states from the substrate.

Quantum Size Effect on Dielectric Properties of Ultrathin Metallic Film: A First-Principles Study of Al(111)

Quantum manifestations of various properties of metallic thin films by quantum size effect (QSE) have been studied intensively. Here, using first-principles calculations, we show quantum manifestation in dielectric properties of Al(111) ultrathin films. The QSE on the dielectric function is revealed, which arises from size dependent contributions from both intraband and interband electronic transitions. More importantly, the in-plane interband transitions in the films thinner than 15 monolayers are found to be smaller than the bulk counterpart in the energy range from 1.5~eV to 2.5~eV. This indicates less energy loss with plasmonic material of Al in the form of ultrathin film. Our findings may shed light on searching for low-loss plasmonic materials via quantum size effect.

Offshore Wind Farm Layout Optimization Using Adapted Genetic Algorithm: A different perspective

In this paper we study the problem of optimal layout of an offshore wind farm to minimize the wake effect impacts. Considering the specific requirements of concerned offshore wind farm, we propose an adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) which introduces location swaps to replace random crossovers in conventional GAs. That way the total number of turbines in the resulting layout will be effectively kept to the initially specified value. We experiment the proposed AGA method on three cases with free wind speed of 12 m/s, 20 m/s, and a typical offshore wind distribution setting respectively. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm which achieves a much faster convergence compared to conventional GA algorithms.

Multistability, multiperiodicity, multichaos: in a unified framework

In this paper, we present a unified framework of multiple attractors including multistability, multiperiodicity and multichaos. Multichaos, which means that the chaotic solution of a system lies in different disjoint invariant sets with respect to different initial values, is a very interesting and important dynamical behavior, but it is never addressed before to the best of our knowledge. By constructing a multiple logistic map, we show that multistability, multiperiodicity and multiple chaos can exist according to different value of the parameter p. In the end, by the derived compact invariant set of the Lorenz system, the multiple Lorenz chaotic attractors are constructed using a sawtooth function.

Tuning Transport Properties of Topological Edge States of Bi(111) Bilayer Film by Edge Adsorption

Based on first-principles and tight-binding calculations, we report that the transport properties of topological edge states of zigzag Bi(111) nanoribbon can be significantly tuned by H edge adsorption. The Fermi velocity is increased by one order of magnitude, as the Dirac point is moved from Brillouin zone boundary to Brillouin zone center and the real-space distribution of Dirac states are made twice more delocalized. These intriguing changes are explained by an orbital filtering effect of edge H atoms, which removes certain components of $p$ orbits of edge Bi atoms that reshapes the topological edge states. In addition, the spin texture of the Dirac states is also modified, which is described by introducing an effective Hamiltonian. Our findings not only are of fundamental interest but also have practical implications in potential applications of topological insulators.

Exciton spin dynamics of colloidal CdTe nanocrystals in magnetic field

The recombination and spin dynamics of excitons in colloidal CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) are studied by time-resolved photoluminescence in high magnetic fields up to 15 T and at cryogenic temperatures. The recombination decay shows a nonexponential temporal behavior, with the longest component corresponding to the dark excitons having 260 ns decay time at zero magnetic field and 4.2 K temperature. This long component shortens to 150 ns at 15 T due to the magnetic-field-induced mixing of the bright and dark exciton states. The spin dynamics, assessed through the evolution of the magnetic-field-induced circular polarization degree of the photoluminescence, has a fast component shorter than 1 ns related to the bright excitons and a slow component of 5-10 ns associated with the dark excitons. The latter shortens with increasing magnetic field, which is characteristic for a phonon-assisted spin relaxation mechanism. The relatively low saturation level of the associated magnetic-field-induced circular polarization degree of -30 % is explained by a model that suggests the CdTe NCs to constitute an ensemble of prolate and oblate NCs, both having a structural quantization axis. The exciton g-factor of 2.4-2.9 evaluated from fitting the experimental data in the frame of the suggested approach is in good agreement with the expected value for the dark excitons in CdTe NCs.

Effects of Li doping on H-diffusion in MgH$_2$: a first-principles study

The effects of Li doping in MgH$_2$ on H-diffusion process are investigated, using first-principles calculations. We have identified two key effects: (1) The concentration of H vacancy in the $+1$ charge state (V$_H^{+1}$) can increase by several orders of magnitude upon Li doping, which significantly increases the vacancy mediated H diffusion rate. It is caused by the preferred charge states of substitutional Li in the $-1$ state (Li$_{Mg}^{-1}$) and of interstitial Li in the $+1$ state (Li$_i^{+1}$), which indirectly reduce the formation energy of V$_H^{+1}$ by up to 0.39 eV depending on the position of Fermi energy. (2) The interaction between V$_H^{+1}$ and Li$_{Mg}^{-1}$ is found to be attractive with a binding energy of 0.55 eV, which immobilizes the V$_H^{+1}$ next to Li$_{Mg}^{-1}$ at high Li doping concentration. As a result, the competition between these two effects leads to large enhancement of H diffusion at low Li doping concentration due to the increased H-vacancy concentration, but only limited enhancement at high Li concentration due to the immobilization of H vacancies by too many Li.

Electronic transmission in Graphene suppressed by interlayer interference

We investigate electronic transport property of a graphene monolayer covered by a graphene nanoribbon. We demonstrate that electronic transmission of a monolayer can be reduced when covered by a nanoribbon. The transmission reduction occurs at different energies determined by the width of nanoribbon. We explain the transmission reduction by using interference between wavefunctions in the monolayer and the nanoribbon. Furthermore, we show the transmission reduction of a monolayer is combinable when covered by more than one nanoribbon and propose a concept of "combination of control" for nano-application design.

Maternal origins of developmental reproducibility

Cell fate decisions in multicellular organisms are precisely coordinated, leading to highly reproducible macroscopic outcomes of developmental processes. The origins of this reproducibility can be found at the molecular level during the earliest stages of development when spatial patterns of morphogen (form-generating) molecules emerge reproducibly. However, the initial conditions for these early stages are determined by the female during oogenesis, and it is unknown whether reproducibility is passed on to the zygote or whether it is reacquired by the zygote. Here we examine the earliest reproducible pattern in the Drosophila embryo, the Bicoid protein gradient. Using a unique combination of absolute molecule counting techniques, we show that it is generated from a highly controlled source of mRNA molecules that is reproducible from embryo to embryo to within ~8%. This occurs in a perfectly linear feed-forward process: changes in the female's gene dosage lead to proportional changes in the mRNA and protein counts in the embryo. In this setup, noise is kept low in the transition from one molecular species to another, allowing the female to precisely deposit the same absolute number of mRNA molecules in each embryo and therefore confer reproducibility to the Bicoid pattern. Our results indicate that the reproducibility of the morphological structures that emerge in the embryo originates during oogenesis when all initial patterning signals are controlled with precision similar to what we observe for the Bicoid pattern.

Superconducting Graphene: the conspiracy of doping and strain

Graphene has exhibited a wealth of fascinating properties, but is also known not to be a superconductor. Remarkably, we show that graphene can be made a conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor by the combined effect of charge doping and tensile strain. While the effect of doping is obvious to enlarge Fermi surface, the effect of strain is profound to greatly increase the electron-phonon coupling. At the experimental accessible doping (4E+14cm-2) and strain (~16%) levels, the superconducting critical temperature Tc reaches as high as ~30 K, the highest for a single-element material above the liquid hydrogen temperature. This significantly makes graphene a commercially viable superconductor.

d+id' Chiral Superconductivity in Bilayer Silicene

We investigate the structure and physical properties of the undoped bilayer silicene through first-principles calculations and find the system is intrinsically metallic with sizable pocket Fermi surfaces. When realistic electron-electron interaction turns on, the system is identified as a chiral d+id' topological superconductor mediated by the strong spin fluctuation on the border of the antiferromagnetic spin density wave order. Moreover, the tunable Fermi pocket area via strain makes it possible to adjust the spin density wave critical interaction strength near the real one and enables a high superconducting critical temperature.
