EEG and ECG changes during deep-sea manned submersible operation

Background: Deep-sea manned submersible operation could induce mental workload and influence neurophysiological measures. Psychophysiological responses to submersible operation are not well known. The main aim of this study was to investigate changes in EEG and ECG components and subjective mental stress of pilots during submersible operation. Methods: There were 6 experienced submersible pilots who performed a 3 h submersible operation task composed of 5 subtasks. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) was recorded before the operation task, after 1.5 h and 2.5 h operation, and after the task. Subjective ratings of mental stress were also conducted at these time points. Results: HR and scores on subjective stressed scale increased during the task compared to baseline (P<0.05). LF/HF ratio at 1.5 h were higher than those at Baseline (P<0.05) and 2.5 h (P<0.05). Relative theta power at the Cz site increased (P<0.01) and relative alpha power decreased (P<0.01) at 2.5 h compared to values at Baseline. Alpha attenuation coefficient (AAC, ratio of mean alpha power during eyes closed versus eyes open) at 2.5 h and after the task were lower compared to baseline and 1.5 h (P<0.05 or less). Conclusions: Submersible operation resulted in an increased HR in association with mental stress, alterations in autonomic activity and EEG changes that expressed variations in mental workload. Brain arousal level declined during the later operation period.

Gapped spin-1/2 spinon excitations in a new kagome quantum spin liquid compound Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr

We report a new kagome quantum spin liquid candidate Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, which does not experience any phase transition down to 50 mK, more than three orders lower than the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature ($\sim$ 200 K). A clear gap opening at low temperature is observed in the uniform spin susceptibility obtained from $^{19}$F nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. We observe the characteristic magnetic field dependence of the gap as expected for fractionalized spin-1/2 spinon excitations. Our experimental results provide firm evidence for spin fractionalization in a topologically ordered spin system, resembling charge fractionalization in the fractional quantum Hall state.

Breaking Diversity Restriction: Distributed Optimal Control of Stand-alone DC Microgrids

Stand-alone direct current (DC) microgrids may belong to different owners and adopt various control strategies. This brings great challenge to its optimal operation due to the difficulty of implementing a unified control. This paper addresses the distributed optimal control of DC microgrids, which intends to break the restriction of diversity to some extent. Firstly, we formulate the optimal power flow (OPF) problem of stand-alone DC microgrids as an exact second order cone program (SOCP) and prove the uniqueness of the optimal solution. Then a dynamic solving algorithm based on primal-dual decomposition method is proposed, the convergence of which is proved theoretically as well as the optimality of its equilibrium point. It should be stressed that the algorithm can provide control commands for the three types of microgrids: (i) power control, (ii) voltage control and (iii) droop control. This implies that each microgrid does not need to change its original control strategy in practice, which is less influenced by the diversity of microgrids. Moreover, the control commands for power controlled and voltage controlled microgrids satisfy generation limits and voltage limits in both transient process and steady state. Finally, a six-microgrid DC system based on the microgrid benchmark is adopted to validate the effectiveness and plug-n-play property of our designs.

Grid-converged Solution and Analysis of the Unsteady Viscous Flow in a Two-dimensional Shock Tube

The flow in a shock tube is extremely complex with dynamic multi-scale structures of sharp fronts, flow separation, and vortices due to the interaction of the shock wave, the contact surface, and the boundary layer over the side wall of the tube. Prediction and understanding of the complex fluid dynamics is of theoretical and practical importance. It is also an extremely challenging problem for numerical simulation, especially at relatively high Reynolds numbers. Daru & Tenaud (Daru, V. & Tenaud, C. 2001 Evaluation of TVD high resolution schemes for unsteady viscous shocked flows. Computers & Fluids 30, 89-113) proposed a two-dimensional model problem as a numerical test case for high-resolution schemes to simulate the flow field in a square closed shock tube. Though many researchers have tried this problem using a variety of computational methods, there is not yet an agreed-upon grid-converged solution of the problem at the Reynolds number of 1000. This paper presents a rigorous grid-convergence study and the resulting grid-converged solutions for this problem by using a newly-developed, efficient, and high-order gas-kinetic scheme. Critical data extracted from the converged solutions are documented as benchmark data. The complex fluid dynamics of the flow at Re = 1000 are discussed and analysed in detail. Major phenomena revealed by the numerical computations include the downward concentration of the fluid through the curved shock, the formation of the vortices, the mechanism of the shock wave bifurcation, the structure of the jet along the bottom wall, and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability near the contact surface.

On 3D Face Reconstruction via Cascaded Regression in Shape Space

Cascaded regression has been recently applied to reconstructing 3D faces from single 2D images directly in shape space, and achieved state-of-the-art performance. This paper investigates thoroughly such cascaded regression based 3D face reconstruction approaches from four perspectives that are not well studied yet: (i) The impact of the number of 2D landmarks; (ii) the impact of the number of 3D vertices; (iii) the way of using standalone automated landmark detection methods; and (iv) the convergence property. To answer these questions, a simplified cascaded regression based 3D face reconstruction method is devised, which can be integrated with standalone automated landmark detection methods and reconstruct 3D face shapes that have the same pose and expression as the input face images, rather than normalized pose and expression. Moreover, an effective training method is proposed by disturbing the automatically detected landmarks. Comprehensive evaluation experiments have been done with comparison to other 3D face reconstruction methods. The results not only deepen the understanding of cascaded regression based 3D face reconstruction approaches, but also prove the effectiveness of proposed method.

Initialization-free Distributed Algorithms for Optimal Resource Allocation with Feasibility Constraints and its Application to Economic Dispatch of Power Systems

In this paper, the distributed resource allocation optimization problem is investigated. The allocation decisions are made to minimize the sum of all the agents' local objective functions while satisfying both the global network resource constraint and the local allocation feasibility constraints. Here the data corresponding to each agent in this separable optimization problem, such as the network resources, the local allocation feasibility constraint, and the local objective function, is only accessible to individual agent and cannot be shared with others, which renders new challenges in this distributed optimization problem. Based on either projection or differentiated projection, two classes of continuous-time algorithms are proposed to solve this distributed optimization problem in an initialization-free and scalable manner. Thus, no re-initialization is required even if the operation environment or network configuration is changed, making it possible to achieve a "plug-and-play" optimal operation of networked heterogeneous agents. The algorithm convergence is guaranteed for strictly convex objective functions, and the exponential convergence is proved for strongly convex functions without local constraints. Then the proposed algorithm is applied to the distributed economic dispatch problem in power grids, to demonstrate how it can achieve the global optimum in a scalable way, even when the generation cost, or system load, or network configuration, is changing.

Spin Fluctuation Induced Linear Magnetoresistance in Ultrathin Superconducting FeSe Films

The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in FeSe/STO has trigged great research interest to reveal a range of exotic physical phenomena in this novel material. Here we present a temperature dependent magnetotransport measurement for ultrathin FeSe/STO films with different thickness and protection layers. Remarkably, a surprising linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is observed around the superconducting transition temperatures but absent otherwise. The experimental LMR can be reproduced by magnetotransport calculations based on a model of magnetic field dependent disorder induced by spin fluctuation. Thus, the observed LMR in coexistence with superconductivity provides the first magnetotransport signature for spin fluctuation around the superconducting transition region in ultrathin FeSe/STO films.

Superconducting Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework

Superconductivity is a fascinating quantum phenomenon characterized by zero electrical resistance and the Meissner effect. To date, several distinct families of superconductors (SCs) have been discovered. These include three-dimensional (3D) bulk SCs in both inorganic and organic materials as well as two-dimensional (2D) thin film SCs but only in $inorganic$ materials. Here we predict superconductivity in 2D and 3D $organic$ metal-organic frameworks by using first-principles calculations. We show that the highly conductive and recently synthesized Cu-benzenehexathial (BHT) is a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer SC. Remarkably, the monolayer Cu-BHT has a critical temperature ($T_{c}$) of 4.43 K while $T_{c}$ of bulk Cu-BHT is 1.58 K. Different from the enhanced $T_{c}$ in 2D inorganic SCs which is induced by interfacial effects, the $T_{c}$ enhancement in this 2D organic SC is revealed to be the out-of-plane soft-mode vibrations, analogous to surface mode enhancement originally proposed by $Ginzburg$. Our findings not only shed new light on better understanding 2D superconductivity, but also open a new direction to search for SCs by interface engineering with organic materials.

Video Frame Interpolation via Adaptive Convolution

Video frame interpolation typically involves two steps: motion estimation and pixel synthesis. Such a two-step approach heavily depends on the quality of motion estimation. This paper presents a robust video frame interpolation method that combines these two steps into a single process. Specifically, our method considers pixel synthesis for the interpolated frame as local convolution over two input frames. The convolution kernel captures both the local motion between the input frames and the coefficients for pixel synthesis. Our method employs a deep fully convolutional neural network to estimate a spatially-adaptive convolution kernel for each pixel. This deep neural network can be directly trained end to end using widely available video data without any difficult-to-obtain ground-truth data like optical flow. Our experiments show that the formulation of video interpolation as a single convolution process allows our method to gracefully handle challenges like occlusion, blur, and abrupt brightness change and enables high-quality video frame interpolation.

A Novel Thiophene-fused Ending Group Enabling an Excellent Small Molecule Acceptor for High-performance Fullerene-free Polymer Solar Cells with 11.8% Efficiency

In this article, we designed and synthesized a novel small molecule acceptor of ITCPTC with thiophene-fused ending group by employing a new active methylene precursor of CPTCN. The ITCPTC based polymer solar cells with PBT1-EH as donor achieved very high PCEs of up to 11.8% with a remarkably enhanced fill factor (FF) of 0.751, a near 20% boost in PCE with respect to the ITIC based control device. These values are among the highest PCEs and FFs for PSCs. In the whole study, we made contrasts with ITIC to understand the reasons of excellent performance of ITCPTC-based PSCs through various measurements, such as GIWAXS and RSoXS. We revealed that the simple modification of ITIC into ITCPTC not only change the material electronic structure, but also mediate the material interactions and crystallization, which contribute together to the excellent performance of ITCPTC based PSCs.

Creation of Half-metallic f -orbital Dirac Fermion with Superlight Elements in Orbital-Designed Molecular Lattice

Magnetism in solids generally originates from the localized $d$- or $f$-orbitals that are hosted by heavy transition-metal elements. Here, we demonstrate a novel mechanism for designing half-metallic $f$-orbital Dirac fermion from superlight $sp$-elements. Combining first-principles and model calculations, we show that bare and flat-band-sandwiched (FBS) Dirac bands can be created when C$_{20}$ molecules are deposited into a 2D hexagonal lattice, which are composed of $f$-molecular orbitals (MOs) derived from $sp$-atomic orbitals (AOs). Furthermore, charge doping of the FBS Dirac bands induces spontaneous spin-polarization, converting the system into a half-metallic Dirac state. Based on this discovery, a model of spin field effect transistor is proposed to generate and transport 100\% spin-polarized carriers. Our finding illustrates a novel concept to realize exotic quantum states by manipulating MOs, instead of AOs, in orbital-designed molecular crystal lattices.

Distributed Frequency Control with Operational Constraints, Part II: Network Power Balance

In Part I of this paper we propose a decentralized optimal frequency control of multi-area power system with operational constraints, where the tie-line powers remain unchanged in the steady state and the power mismatch is balanced within individual control areas. In Part II of the paper, we propose a distributed controller for optimal frequency control in the network power balance case, where the power mismatch is balanced over the whole system. With the proposed controller, the tie-line powers remain within the acceptable range at equilibrium, while the regulation capacity constraints are satisfied both at equilibrium and during transient. It is revealed that the closed-loop system with the proposed controller carries out primal-dual updates with saturation for solving an associated optimization problem. To cope with discontinuous dynamics of the closed-loop system, we deploy the invariance principle for nonpathological Lyapunov function to prove its asymptotic stability. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of our controller.

Distributed Frequency Control with Operational Constraints, Part I: Per-Node Power Balance

This paper addresses the distributed optimal frequency control of multi-area power system with operational constraints, including the regulation capacity of individual control area and the power limits on tie-lines. Both generators and controllable loads are utilized to recover nominal frequencies while minimizing regulation cost. We study two control modes:the per-node balance mode and the network balance mode. In Part I of the paper, we only consider the per-node balance case, where we derive a completely decentralized strategy without the need for communication between control areas. It can adapt to unknown load disturbance. The tie-line powers are restored after load disturbance, while the regulation capacity constraints are satisfied both at equilibrium and during transient. We show that the closed-loop systems with the proposed control strategies carry out primal-dual updates for solving the associated centralized frequency optimization problems. We further prove the closed-loop systems are asymptotically stable and converge to the unique optimal solution of the centralized frequency optimization problems and their duals. Finally, we present simulation results to demonstrate the effectiveness of our design. In Part II of the paper, we address the network power balance case, where transmission congestions are managed continuously.

A Generalized Short Circuit Ratio for Multi-Infeed LCC-HVDC System

The relationship between the short circuit ratio (SCR) and static voltage stability is analyzed in this paper. According to eigenvalue decomposition method, a novel concept named generalized short circuit ratio (gSCR) has been proposed for multi-infeed LCC-HVDC (MIDC) systems to mathematically measure the connect-ed AC strength from the point view of voltage stability, which can overcome the rule-of-thumb basis of existing multi-infeed short circuit ratio (MISCR) concept. In gSCR, two indices, the critical gSCR (CgSCR) and the boundary gSCR (BgSCR) are developed to quantitatively evaluate if the connected AC system is strong or weak, in which CgSCR=2 and BgSCR=3 are two critical values for strength evaluation. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed gSCR concept.

Density-functional calculations of multivalency-driven formation of Te-based monolayer materials with superior electronic and optical properties

Contemporary science is witnessing a rapid expansion of the two-dimensional (2D) materials family, each member possessing intriguing emergent properties of fundamental and practical importance. Using the particle-swarm optimization method in combination with first-principles density functional theory calculations, here wepredict a new category of 2D monolayers named tellurene, composed of the metalloid element Te, with stable 1T-MoS2-like ( α-Te), and metastable tetragonal (\b{eta}-Te) and 2H-MoS2-like (γ-Te) structures. The underlying formation mechanism of such tri-layer arrangements is uniquely rooted in the multivalent nature of Te, with the central-layer Te behaving more metal-like (e.g., Mo), and the two outer layers more semiconductor-like (e.g.,S). In particular, the α-Te phase can be spontaneously obtained from the magic thicknesses truncated along the [001] direction of the trigonal structure of bulk Te. Furthermore, both the α- and \b{eta}-Te phases possess electron and hole mobilities much higher than MoS2, as well as salient optical absorption properties. These findings effectively extend the realm of 2D materials to group-VI monolayers, and provide a new and generic formation mechanism for designing 2D materials.

π-Conjugation in Epitaxial Si(111)-($\sqrt3$$\times$$\sqrt3$) Surface: an Unconventional "Bamboo Hat" Bonding Geometry for Si

The newly observed ($\sqrt3$$\times$$\sqrt3$) surface reconstruction in heteroepitaxial Si(111) thin films on metal substrates is widely considered as a promising platform to realize 2D Dirac and topological states, yet its formation mechanism and structural stability are poorly understood, leading to the controversial terminology of "multilayer silicene". Based on valence bond and conjugation theory, we propose a π-conjugation plus charge-transfer model to elucidate such a unique "bamboo hat" surface geometry. The formation of planar ring-shaped π-conjugation and charge transfer from the rings to upper buckled Si atoms greatly lower the surface dangling bond energy. We justify this unconventional Si structural model by analyzing from first-principles surface energies and surface stress tensors as a function of strain. Within the same formalism, additional metastable surface reconstructions with the similar "bamboo hat" features are predicted which opens possibilities to other exotic electronic states in silicon.

Tensile Strained Gray Tin: a New Dirac Semimetal for Observing Negative Magnetoresistance with Shubnikov-de-Haas Oscillation

The extremely stringent requirement on material quality has hindered the investigation and potential applications of exotic chiral magnetic effect in Dirac semimetals. Here, we propose that gray tin is a perfect candidate for observing the chiral anomaly effect and Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) oscillation at relatively low magnetic field. Based on effective $k.p$ analysis and first-principles calculations, we discover that gray tin becomes a Dirac semimetal under tensile uniaxial strain, in contrast to a topological insulator under compressive uniaxial strain as known before. In this newly found Dirac semimetal state, two Dirac points which are tunable by tensile [001] strains, lie in the $k_z$ axis and Fermi arcs appear in the (100) surface. Duo the low carrier concentration and high mobility of gray tin, a large chiral anomaly induced negative magnetoresistance and a strong SdH oscillation are anticipated in this half of strain spectrum. Comparing to other Dirac semimetals, the proposed Dirac semimetal state in the nontoxic elemental gray tin can be more easily manipulated and accurately controlled. We envision that gray tin provides a perfect platform for strain engineering of chiral magnetic effects by sweeping through the strain spectrum from positive to negative and vice versa.

Robust Coordinated Transmission and Generation Expansion Planning Considering Ramping Requirements and Construction Periods

Two critical issues have arisen in transmission expansion planning with the rapid growth of wind power generation. First, severe power ramping events in daily operation due to the high variability of wind power generation pose great challenges to multi-year planning decision making. Second, the long construction periods of transmission lines may not be able to keep pace with the fast growing uncertainty due to the increasing integration of renewable energy generation. To address such issues, we propose a comprehensive robust planning model considering different resources, namely, transmission lines, generators, and FACTS devices. Various factors are taken into account, including flexibility requirement, construction period, and cost. We construct the hourly net load ramping uncertainty (HLRU) set to characterize the variation of hourly net load including wind power generation, and the annual net load duration curve uncertainty (LDCU) set for the uncertainty of normal annual net load duration curve. This results in a two-stage robust optimization model with two different types of uncertainty sets, which are decoupled into two different sets of subproblems to make the entire solution process tractable. Numerical simulations with real-world data show that the proposed model and solution method are effective to coordinate different flexible resources, rendering robust expansion planning strategies.
