Fast-response silicon photonic microheater induced by parity-time symmetry breaking

Thermo-optic microheater is indispensable in silicon photonic devices for smart and reconfigurable photonic networks. Much efforts have been made to improve the metallic microheater performance in the past decades. However, because of the metallic nature of light absorption, placing the metallic microheater very close to the waveguide for fast response is impractical and has not been done experimentally. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a metallic microheater placed very close to the waveguide based on parity-time (PT) symmetry breaking. The intrinsic high loss of metallic heater ensures the system will operate in the PT-symmetry-broken region, which guarantee the low loss of light in the silicon waveguide. Moreover, heating at a close range significantly reduces the response time. A fast response time of ~1 us is achieved without introducing extra loss. The insertion loss is only 0.1 dB for the long heater. The modulation bandwidth is 280 kHz, which is an order of magnitude improvement when compared with that of the mainstream thermo-optic phase shifters. To verify the capability of large-scale integration, a 1*8 phased array for beam steering is also demonstrated experimentally with the PT-symmetry-broken metallic heaters. Our work provides a novel design concept for low-loss fast-response optical switches with dissipative materials and offers a new approach to enhance the performance of thermo-optic phase shifters.

Deep learning piston aberration control of fiber laser phased array by spiral phase modulation

The stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) algorithm is usually employed as the control strategy for phase-locking in fiber laser phased array systems. However, the convergence speed of the SPGD algorithm will slow down as the number of array elements increases. To improve the control bandwidth, the convolutional neural network is introduced to quickly calculate the initial piston aberration in a single step. In addition, the irrationality of the commonly used Mean Square Error (MSE) evaluation function in existing convolutional neural networks is analyzed. A new evaluation function NPCD (Normalized Phase Cosine Distance) is proposed to improve the accuracy of the neural networks. The results show that the piston aberration residual is 0.005 and the power in the bucket (PIB) is 0.993 after accurate preliminary compensation, which means that the system directly enters the co-phase state. We also demonstrate the robustness and scalability by adding additional disturbance and expanding the scale of the array.

Rapid COVID-19 Risk Screening by Eye-region Manifestations

It is still nontrivial to develop a new fast COVID-19 screening method with the easier access and lower cost, due to the technical and cost limitations of the current testing methods in the medical resource-poor districts. On the other hand, there are more and more ocular manifestations that have been reported in the COVID-19 patients as growing clinical evidence[1]. This inspired this project. We have conducted the joint clinical research since January 2021 at the ShiJiaZhuang City, Heibei province, China, which approved by the ethics committee of The fifth hospital of ShiJiaZhuang of Hebei Medical University. We undertake several blind tests of COVID-19 patients by Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China. Meantime as an important part of the ongoing globally COVID-19 eye test program by AIMOMICS since February 2020, we propose a new fast screening method of analyzing the eye-region images, captured by common CCD and CMOS cameras. This could reliably make a rapid risk screening of COVID-19 with the sustainable stable high performance in different countries and races. Our model for COVID-19 rapid prescreening have the merits of the lower cost, fully self-performed, non-invasive, importantly real-time, and thus enables the continuous health surveillance. We further implement it as the open accessible APIs, and provide public service to the world. Our pilot experiments show that our model is ready to be usable to all kinds of surveillance scenarios, such as infrared temperature measurement device at airports and stations, or directly pushing to the target people groups smartphones as a packaged application.

Glauber Gluon Effects in Soft Collinear Factorization

Effects of Glauber gluons, which cause the elastic scattering process between different jets, are studied in the frame of soft-collinear effective theory(SCET). Glauber modes are added into the Lagrangian before integrated out, which is helpful in studies on Glauber couplings of collinear and soft particles explicitly. It is proved that interactions after the hard collision cancel out in processes inclusive enough. So are interactions with the light cone coordinates Sx^{+}$ and $x^{-}$ greater than those of the hard collision. Eikonalization of Glauber couplings of active particles and absorption of active-active and active-soft and active-spectator Glauber exchanges into soft and collinear Wilson lines are discussed, which is related to loop level definitions of Glauber gluons here. The active-spectator coherence are proved to be harmless on inclusive summation of spectator-spectator and spectator-soft Glauber exchanges. Based on this result, spectator-spectator and spectator-soft Glauber exchanges are proved to cancel out in processes considered here. Graphic aspects of the cancellation are also discussed to explain relations between the graphic cancellation of Glauber gluons in the frame of perturbative QCD and operator level skills in the paper.

Explicit Semantic Cross Feature Learning via Pre-trained Graph Neural Networks for CTR Prediction

Cross features play an important role in click-through rate (CTR) prediction. Most of the existing methods adopt a DNN-based model to capture the cross features in an implicit manner. These implicit methods may lead to a sub-optimized performance due to the limitation in explicit semantic modeling. Although traditional statistical explicit semantic cross features can address the problem in these implicit methods, it still suffers from some challenges, including lack of generalization and expensive memory cost. Few works focus on tackling these challenges. In this paper, we take the first step in learning the explicit semantic cross features and propose Pre-trained Cross Feature learning Graph Neural Networks (PCF-GNN), a GNN based pre-trained model aiming at generating cross features in an explicit fashion. Extensive experiments are conducted on both public and industrial datasets, where PCF-GNN shows competence in both performance and memory-efficiency in various tasks.

Invariable mobility edge in a quasiperiodic lattice

In this paper, we study a one-dimensional tight-binding model with tunable incommensurate potentials. Through the analysis of the inverse participation rate, we uncover that the wave functions corresponding to the energies of the system exhibit different properties. There exists a critical energy under which the wave functions corresponding to all energies are extended. On the contrary, the wave functions corresponding to all energies above the critical energy are localized. However, we are surprised to find that the critical energy is a constant independent of the potentials. We use the self-dual relation to solve the critical energy, namely the mobility edge, and then we verify the analytical results again by analyzing the spatial distributions of the wave functions. Finally, we give a brief discussion on the possible experimental observation of the invariable mobility edge in the system of ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Observation of non-Abelian topological semimetals and their phase transitions

Topological phases of matter lie at the heart of physics, connecting elegant mathematical principles to real materials that are believed to shape future electronic and quantum computing technologies. To date, studies in this discipline have almost exclusively been restricted to single-gap band topology because of the Fermi-Dirac filling effect. Here, we theoretically analyze and experimentally confirm a novel class of multi-gap topological phases, which we will refer to as non-Abelian topological semimetals, on kagome geometries. These unprecedented forms of matter depend on the notion of Euler class and frame charges which arise due to non-Abelian charge conversion processes when band nodes of different gaps are braided along each other in momentum space. We identify such exotic phenomena in acoustic metamaterials and uncover a rich topological phase diagram induced by the creation, braiding and recombination of band nodes. Using pump-probe measurements, we verify the non-Abelian charge conversion processes where topological charges of nodes are transferred from one gap to another. Moreover, in such processes, we discover symmetry-enforced intermediate phases featuring triply-degenerate band nodes with unique dispersions that are directly linked to the multi-gap topological invariants. Furthermore, we confirm that edge states can faithfully characterize the multi-gap topological phase diagram. Our study unveils a new regime of topological phases where multi-gap topology and non-Abelian charges of band nodes play a crucial role in understanding semimetals with inter-connected multiple bands.

Towards Fast and Accurate Real-World Depth Super-Resolution: Benchmark Dataset and Baseline

Depth maps obtained by commercial depth sensors are always in low-resolution, making it difficult to be used in various computer vision tasks. Thus, depth map super-resolution (SR) is a practical and valuable task, which upscales the depth map into high-resolution (HR) space. However, limited by the lack of real-world paired low-resolution (LR) and HR depth maps, most existing methods use downsampling to obtain paired training samples. To this end, we first construct a large-scale dataset named "RGB-D-D", which can greatly promote the study of depth map SR and even more depth-related real-world tasks. The "D-D" in our dataset represents the paired LR and HR depth maps captured from mobile phone and Lucid Helios respectively ranging from indoor scenes to challenging outdoor scenes. Besides, we provide a fast depth map super-resolution (FDSR) baseline, in which the high-frequency component adaptively decomposed from RGB image to guide the depth map SR. Extensive experiments on existing public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our network compared with the state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, for the real-world LR depth maps, our algorithm can produce more accurate HR depth maps with clearer boundaries and to some extent correct the depth value errors.

Least Squares Approximation for a Distributed System

In this work, we develop a distributed least squares approximation (DLSA) method that is able to solve a large family of regression problems (e.g., linear regression, logistic regression, and Cox's model) on a distributed system. By approximating the local objective function using a local quadratic form, we are able to obtain a combined estimator by taking a weighted average of local estimators. The resulting estimator is proved to be statistically as efficient as the global estimator. Moreover, it requires only one round of communication. We further conduct a shrinkage estimation based on the DLSA estimation using an adaptive Lasso approach. The solution can be easily obtained by using the LARS algorithm on the master node. It is theoretically shown that the resulting estimator possesses the oracle property and is selection consistent by using a newly designed distributed Bayesian information criterion (DBIC). The finite sample performance and computational efficiency are further illustrated by an extensive numerical study and an airline dataset. The airline dataset is 52 GB in size. The entire methodology has been implemented in Python for a {\it de-facto} standard Spark system. The proposed DLSA algorithm on the Spark system takes 26 minutes to obtain a logistic regression estimator, which is more efficient and memory friendly than conventional methods.

Graph Intention Network for Click-through Rate Prediction in Sponsored Search

Estimating click-through rate (CTR) accurately has an essential impact on improving user experience and revenue in sponsored search. For CTR prediction model, it is necessary to make out user real-time search intention. Most of the current work is to mine their intentions based on user real-time behaviors. However, it is difficult to capture the intention when user behaviors are sparse, causing the behavior sparsity problem. Moreover, it is difficult for user to jump out of their specific historical behaviors for possible interest exploration, namely weak generalization problem. We propose a new approach Graph Intention Network (GIN) based on co-occurrence commodity graph to mine user intention. By adopting multi-layered graph diffusion, GIN enriches user behaviors to solve the behavior sparsity problem. By introducing co-occurrence relationship of commodities to explore the potential preferences, the weak generalization problem is also alleviated. To the best of our knowledge, the GIN method is the first to introduce graph learning for user intention mining in CTR prediction and propose end-to-end joint training of graph learning and CTR prediction tasks in sponsored search. At present, GIN has achieved excellent offline results on the real-world data of the e-commerce platform outperforming existing deep learning models, and has been running stable tests online and achieved significant CTR improvements.

Spectrum Sharing for 6G Integrated Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks Based on NOMA and Cognitive Radio

The explosive growth of bandwidth hungry Internet applications has led to the rapid development of new generation mobile network technologies that are expected to provide broadband access to the Internet in a pervasive manner. For example, 6G networks are capable of providing high-speed network access by exploiting higher frequency spectrum; high-throughout satellite communication services are also adopted to achieve pervasive coverage in remote and isolated areas. In order to enable seamless access, Integrated Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks (ISTCN) has emerged as an important research area. ISTCN aims to provide high speed and pervasive network services by integrating broadband terrestrial mobile networks with satellite communication networks. As terrestrial mobile networks began to use higher frequency spectrum (between 3GHz to 40GHz) which overlaps with that of satellite communication (4GHz to 8GHz for C band and 26GHz to 40GHz for Ka band), there are opportunities and challenges. On one hand, satellite terminals can potentially access terrestrial networks in an integrated manner; on the other hand, there will be more congestion and interference in this spectrum, hence more efficient spectrum management techniques are required. In this paper, we propose a new technique to improve spectrum sharing performance by introducing Non-orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (NOMA) and Cognitive Radio (CR) in the spectrum sharing of ISTCN. In essence, NOMA technology improves spectrum efficiency by allowing different users to transmit on the same carrier and distinguishing users by user power levels while CR technology improves spectrum efficiency through dynamic spectrum sharing. Furthermore, some open researches and challenges in ISTCN will be discussed.

SARG: A Novel Semi Autoregressive Generator for Multi-turn Incomplete Utterance Restoration

Dialogue systems in open domain have achieved great success due to the easily obtained single-turn corpus and the development of deep learning, but the multi-turn scenario is still a challenge because of the frequent coreference and information omission. In this paper, we investigate the incomplete utterance restoration which has brought general improvement over multi-turn dialogue systems in recent studies. Meanwhile, jointly inspired by the autoregression for text generation and the sequence labeling for text editing, we propose a novel semi autoregressive generator (SARG) with the high efficiency and flexibility. Moreover, experiments on two benchmarks show that our proposed model significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art models in terms of quality and inference speed.

Blockchain-Based Approach for Securing Spectrum Trading in Multibeam Satellite Systems

This paper presents a blockchain-based approach for securing spectrum sharing in multi-beam satellite systems. Satellite spectrum is a scarce resource that requires highly efficient management schemes for optimized sharing by network users. However, spectrum sharing is vulnerable to attacks by malicious protocol participants. In order to ensure efficient spectrum management in the face of dishonest satellite users or cyber attackers, it is important for spectrum sharing mechanism to provide transparency and traceability of the trading process so as to enable the system to detect, and hence eliminate, unauthorized access by malicious users. We address these requirements by proposing the use of blockchain which, apart from its ability to provide transparency and traceability, ensures an immutable means for keeping track of user trading reputation. Besides, in order to address the practical constraints of heterogeneous user nodes, we also propose the use of edge computing to support users with limited computing power. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based spectrum trading framework and, based on which, a multibeam satellite spectrum sharing algorithm for interference pricing and heterogeneous spectrum demands is devised to improve the efficiency of satellite spectrum. By leveraging on the system characteristics of blockchain, a dynamic spectrum sharing mechanism with traceability, openness and transparency for whole trading process is presented. Numerical results are also provided to evaluate the system benefits and spectrum pricing of the proposed mechanism.

ElasticBroker: Combining HPC with Cloud to Provide Realtime Insights into Simulations

For large-scale scientific simulations, it is expensive to store raw simulation results to perform post-analysis. To minimize expensive I/O, "in-situ" analysis is often used, where analysis applications are tightly coupled with scientific simulations and can access and process the simulation results in memory. Increasingly, scientific domains employ Big Data approaches to analyze simulations for scientific discoveries. However, it remains a challenge to organize, transform, and transport data at scale between the two semantically different ecosystems (HPC and Cloud systems). In an effort to address these challenges, we design and implement the ElasticBroker software framework, which bridges HPC and Cloud applications to form an "in-situ" scientific workflow. Instead of writing simulation results to parallel file systems, ElasticBroker performs data filtering, aggregation, and format conversions to close the gap between an HPC ecosystem and a distinct Cloud ecosystem. To achieve this goal, ElasticBroker reorganizes simulation snapshots into continuous data streams and send them to the Cloud. In the Cloud, we deploy a distributed stream processing service to perform online data analysis. In our experiments, we use ElasticBroker to setup and execute a cross-ecosystem scientific workflow, which consists of a parallel computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation running on a supercomputer, and a parallel dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) analysis application running in a Cloud computing platform. Our results show that running scientific workflows consisting of decoupled HPC and Big Data jobs in their native environments with ElasticBroker, can achieve high quality of service, good scalability, and provide high-quality analytics for ongoing simulations.

Ray dynamics of whispering-gallery modes in curved space

Microcavities supporting Whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) are of great significance for on-chip optical information processing, which is frequently analyzed using ray dynamics that conventionally involves straight light trajectories in flat space. We develop a novel mathematical model of ray dynamics that allows investigating photon movement in WGM-microcavities defined on curved surfaces, which consists of curved or twisted light trajectories following the geodesic lines of the space. We show that the resulting ray dynamics differs dramatically from those in flat microcavities, and in various manners depending on whether the curved surface can be unfolded to flat. Our methods suggest a redefinition of the WGM symmetry in curved space and provides a universal tool for analyzing three-dimensional (3D) photonic circuits containing curved structures with boundaries.

Experimental measurement of the divergent quantum metric of an exceptional point

The geometry of Hamiltonian's eigenstates is encoded in the quantum geometric tensor (QGT). It contains both the Berry curvature, central to the description of topological matter and the quantum metric. So far the full QGT has been measured only in Hermitian systems, where the role of the quantum metric is mostly shown to determine corrections to physical effects. On the contrary, in non-Hermitian systems, and in particular near exceptional points, the quantum metric is expected to diverge and to often play a dominant role, for example on the enhanced sensing and on wave packet dynamics. In this work, we report the first experimental measurement of the quantum metric in a non-Hermitian system. The specific platform under study is an organic microcavity with exciton-polariton eigenstates, which demonstrate exceptional points. We measure the quantum metric's divergence and we determine the scaling exponent $n=-1.01\pm0.08$, which is in agreement with theoretical predictions for the second-order exceptional points.

The uncertainty estimation of feature-based forecast combinations

Forecasting is an indispensable element of operational research (OR) and an important aid to planning. The accurate estimation of the forecast uncertainty facilitates several operations management activities, predominantly in supporting decisions in inventory and supply chain management and effectively setting safety stocks. In this paper, we introduce a feature-based framework, which links the relationship between time series features and the interval forecasting performance into providing reliable interval forecasts. We propose an optimal threshold ratio searching algorithm and a new weight determination mechanism for selecting an appropriate subset of models and assigning combination weights for each time series tailored to the observed features. We evaluate our approach using a large set of time series from the M4 competition. Our experiments show that our approach significantly outperforms a wide range of benchmark models, both in terms of point forecasts as well as prediction intervals.

Observation of a phononic higher-order Weyl semimetal

Weyl semimetals are extraordinary systems where exotic phenomena such as Fermi arcs, pseudo-gauge fields and quantum anomalies arise from topological band degeneracy in crystalline solids for electrons and metamaterials for photons and phonons. On the other hand, higher-order topological insulators unveil intriguing multidimensional topological physics beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondences. However, it is unclear whether higher-order topology can emerge in Weyl semimetals. Here, we report the experimental discovery of higher-order Weyl semimetals in its phononic analog which exhibit topologically-protected boundary states in multiple dimensions. We create the physical realization of the higher-order Weyl semimetal in a chiral phononic crystal with uniaxial screw symmetry. Using near-field spectroscopies, we observe the chiral Fermi arcs on the surfaces and a new type of hinge arc states on the hinge boundaries. These topological boundary arc states link the projections of Weyl points in different dimensions and directions, and hence demonstrate higher-order multidimensional topological physics in Weyl semimetals. Our study establishes the fundamental connection between higher-order topology and Weyl physics in crystalline materials and unveils a new horizon of higher-order topological semimetals where unprecedented materials such as higher-order topological nodal-lines may emerge.
