The Discovery of Polarized Water Vapor Megamaser Emission in a Molecular Accretion Disk

For the first time in an extragalactic source, we detect linearly polarized water maser emission associated with the molecular accretion disk of NGC 1068. The position angles of the electric polarization vectors are perpendicular to the axes of filamentary structures in the molecular accretion disk. The inferred magnetic field threading the molecular disk must lie within approximately 35 degrees of the sky plane. The orientation of the magnetic fields relative to the disk plane implies that the maser region is unstable to hydromagnetically powered outflow; we speculate that the maser region may be the source of the larger scale molecular outflow found in ALMA studies. The new VLBI observations also reveal a compact radio continuum source, NGC 1068*, aligned with the near-systemic maser spots. The molecular accretion disk must be viewed nearly edge-on, and the revised central mass is (16.6 +/- 0.1) million solar masses.

Improving constraints on the extended mass distribution in the Galactic Center with stellar orbits

Studying the orbital motion of stars around Sagittarius A* in the Galactic Center provides a unique opportunity to probe the gravitational potential near the supermassive black hole at the heart of our Galaxy. Interferometric data obtained with the GRAVITY instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) since 2016 has allowed us to achieve unprecedented precision in tracking the orbits of these stars. GRAVITY data have been key to detecting the in-plane, prograde Schwarzschild precession of the orbit of the star S2, as predicted by General Relativity. By combining astrometric and spectroscopic data from multiple stars, including S2, S29, S38, and S55 - for which we have data around their time of pericenter passage with GRAVITY - we can now strengthen the significance of this detection to an approximately $10 σ$ confidence level. The prograde precession of S2's orbit provides valuable insights into the potential presence of an extended mass distribution surrounding Sagittarius A*, which could consist of a dynamically relaxed stellar cusp comprised of old stars and stellar remnants, along with a possible dark matter spike. Our analysis, based on two plausible density profiles - a power-law and a Plummer profile - constrains the enclosed mass within the orbit of S2 to be consistent with zero, establishing an upper limit of approximately $1200 \, M_\odot$ with a $1 σ$ confidence level. This significantly improves our constraints on the mass distribution in the Galactic Center. Our upper limit is very close to the expected value from numerical simulations for a stellar cusp in the Galactic Center, leaving little room for a significant enhancement of dark matter density near Sagittarius A*.

MLIC: Multi-Reference Entropy Model for Learned Image Compression

Recently, learned image compression has achieved remarkable performance. The entropy model, which estimates the distribution of the latent representation, plays a crucial role in boosting rate-distortion performance. However, most entropy models only capture correlations in one dimension, while the latent representation contain channel-wise, local spatial, and global spatial correlations. To tackle this issue, we propose the Multi-Reference Entropy Model (MEM) and the advanced version, MEM$^+$. These models capture the different types of correlations present in latent representation. Specifically, We first divide the latent representation into slices. When decoding the current slice, we use previously decoded slices as context and employ the attention map of the previously decoded slice to predict global correlations in the current slice. To capture local contexts, we introduce two enhanced checkerboard context capturing techniques that avoids performance degradation. Based on MEM and MEM$^+$, we propose image compression models MLIC and MLIC$^+$. Extensive experimental evaluations demonstrate that our MLIC and MLIC$^+$ models achieve state-of-the-art performance, reducing BD-rate by $8.05\%$ and $11.39\%$ on the Kodak dataset compared to VTM-17.0 when measured in PSNR. Water-induced high-performance quantum-dot light-emitting diodes

Solution-processed light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are appealing for their potential in the low-cost fabrication of large-area devices. However, the limited performance of solution-processed blue LEDs, particularly their short operation lifetime, is hindering their practical use in display technologies. Here, we demonstrate that trace water in device, previously considered detrimental to most solution-processed LEDs, dramatically enhances the performance of quantum-dot LEDs (QLEDs). This breakthrough stems from our comprehensive mechanism investigations into the positive ageing phenomenon, a long-standing puzzle in the QLED field. Our findings reveal that water passivation on the surface of electron-transport layers, which are composed of zinc-oxide-based nanoparticles, improves charge transport and enhances exciton radiative recombination during device operation. Combined with the advanced top-emitting architecture, our blue QLEDs achieve a high current efficiency of 35.5 cd A-1, a blue index (colour coordinate corrected current efficiency) of over 470 cd A-1 CIEy-1, and unprecedented stability, with an extrapolated T95 lifetime (at an initial brightness of 1,000 cd m-2) of 287 hours. Our work may inspire further exploration into surface passivation of nanocrystalline functional layers, critical for the advancement of emerging solution-processed optoelectronic and electronic devices.

Hierarchical Attention and Parallel Filter Fusion Network for Multi-Source Data Classification

Hyperspectral image (HSI) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data joint classification is a crucial and yet challenging task in the field of remote sensing image interpretation. However, feature modeling in existing methods is deficient to exploit the abundant global, spectral, and local features simultaneously, leading to sub-optimal classification performance. To solve the problem, we propose a hierarchical attention and parallel filter fusion network for multi-source data classification. Concretely, we design a hierarchical attention module for hyperspectral feature extraction. This module integrates global, spectral, and local features simultaneously to provide more comprehensive feature representation. In addition, we develop parallel filter fusion module which enhances cross-modal feature interactions among different spatial locations in the frequency domain. Extensive experiments on two multi-source remote sensing data classification datasets verify the superiority of our proposed method over current state-of-the-art classification approaches. Specifically, our proposed method achieves 91.44% and 80.51% of overall accuracy (OA) on the respective datasets, highlighting its superior performance.

Hardware Architecture Design of Model-Based Image Reconstruction Towards Palm-size Photoacoustic Tomography

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging technology combines the advantages of optical imaging and ultrasound imaging, showing great potential in biomedical applications. Many preclinical studies and clinical applications urgently require fast, high-quality, low-cost and portable imaging system. Translating advanced image reconstruction algorithms into hardware implementations is highly desired. However, existing iterative PA image reconstructions, although exhibit higher accuracy than delay-and-sum algorithm, suffer from high computational cost. In this paper, we introduce a model-based hardware acceleration architecture based on superposed Wave (s-Wave) for palm-size PA tomography (palm-PAT), aiming at enhancing both the speed and performance of image reconstruction at a much lower system cost. To achieve this, we propose an innovative data reuse method that significantly reduces hardware storage resource consumption. We conducted experiments by FPGA implementation of the algorithm, using both phantoms and in vivo human finger data to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that our proposed architecture can substantially reduce system cost while maintaining high imaging performance. The hardware-accelerated implementation of the model-based algorithm achieves a speedup of up to approximately 270 times compared to the CPU, while the corresponding energy efficiency ratio is improved by more than 2700 times.

Long-distance distribution of telecom time-energy entanglement generated on a silicon chip

Entanglement distribution is a critical technique that enables numerous quantum applications. Most fiber-based long-distance experiments reported to date have utilized photon pair sources generated in bulk optical crystals, with the entanglement encoded in the polarization degree of freedom. Here, we create time-energy entanglement for photon pairs generated from an on-chip silicon ring resonator via SFWM process and report the distribution of the entanglement over standard optical fiber with distance >81 km. Our work paves the way for future large-scale quantum networks with connect of distant quantum nodes.

Adapted Swin Transformer-based Real-Time Plasma Shape Detection and Control in HL-3

In the field of magnetic confinement plasma control, the accurate feedback of plasma position and shape primarily relies on calculations derived from magnetic measurements through equilibrium reconstruction or matrix mapping method. However, under harsh conditions like high-energy neutron radiation and elevated temperatures, the installation of magnetic probes within the device becomes challenging. Relying solely on external magnetic probes can compromise the precision of EFIT in determining the plasma shape. To tackle this issue, we introduce a real-time, non-magnetic measurement method on the HL-3 tokamak, which diagnoses the plasma position and shape via imaging. Particularly, we put forward an adapted Swin Transformer model, the Poolformer Swin Transformer (PST), to accurately and fastly interpret the plasma shape from the Charge-Coupled Device Camera (CCD) images. By adopting multi-task learning and knowledge distillation techniques, the model is capable of robustly detecting six shape parameters under disruptive conditions such as a divertor shape and gas injection, circumventing global brightness changes and cumbersome manual labeling. Specifically, the well-trained PST model capably infers R and Z within the mean average error below 1.1 cm and 1.8 cm, respectively, while requiring less than 2 ms for end-to-end feedback, an 80 improvement over the smallest Swin Transformer model, laying the foundation for real-time control. Finally, we deploy the PST model in the Plasma Control System (PCS) using TensorRT, and achieve 500 ms stable PID feedback control based on the PST-computed horizontal displacement information. In conclusion, this research opens up new avenues for the practical application of image-computing plasma shape diagnostic methods in the realm of real-time feedback control.

Wavelet-based Bi-dimensional Aggregation Network for SAR Image Change Detection

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image change detection is critical in remote sensing image analysis. Recently, the attention mechanism has been widely used in change detection tasks. However, existing attention mechanisms often employ down-sampling operations such as average pooling on the Key and Value components to enhance computational efficiency. These irreversible operations result in the loss of high-frequency components and other important information. To address this limitation, we develop Wavelet-based Bi-dimensional Aggregation Network (WBANet) for SAR image change detection. We design a wavelet-based self-attention block that includes discrete wavelet transform and inverse discrete wavelet transform operations on Key and Value components. Hence, the feature undergoes downsampling without any loss of information, while simultaneously enhancing local contextual awareness through an expanded receptive field. Additionally, we have incorporated a bi-dimensional aggregation module that boosts the non-linear representation capability by merging spatial and channel information via broadcast mechanism. Experimental results on three SAR datasets demonstrate that our WBANet significantly outperforms contemporary state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, our WBANet achieves 98.33\%, 96.65\%, and 96.62\% of percentage of correct classification (PCC) on the respective datasets, highlighting its superior performance. Implementation of Composite Photon Blockade Based on Four-wave Mixing System

A high-quality single-photon blockade system can effectively enhance the quality of single-photon sources. Conventional photon blockade(CPB) suffers from low single-photon purity and high requirements for system nonlinearity, while unconventional photon blockade(UPB) has the disadvantage of low brightness. Recent research by [Laser Photon.Rev 14,1900279,2020] demonstrates that UPB can be used to enhance the strength of CPB, thereby improving the purity of single-photon sources. Research by [Opt. Express 30(12),21787,2022] shows that there is an intersection point between CPB and UPB in certain nonlinear systems, where the performance of single photons is better. In this study, we investigated the phenomenon of photon blockade in a non-degenerate four-wave mixing system, where CPB and UPB can occur simultaneously within the same parameter range. We refer to this phenomenon as composite photon blockade. Particularly, when the system achieves composite photon blockade, the value of g(2)(0) is smaller, and there are more single photons. We conducted analytical analysis and numerical calculations to study the conditions for the realization of CPB, UPB, and 2PB in the system, and discussed in detail the influence of system parameters on various blockade effects.

CUTS: A Deep Learning and Topological Framework for Multigranular Unsupervised Medical Image Segmentation

Segmenting medical images is critical to facilitating both patient diagnoses and quantitative research. A major limiting factor is the lack of labeled data, as obtaining expert annotations for each new set of imaging data and task can be labor intensive and inconsistent among annotators. We present CUTS, an unsupervised deep learning framework for medical image segmentation. CUTS operates in two stages. For each image, it produces an embedding map via intra-image contrastive learning and local patch reconstruction. Then, these embeddings are partitioned at dynamic granularity levels that correspond to the data topology. CUTS yields a series of coarse-to-fine-grained segmentations that highlight features at various granularities. We applied CUTS to retinal fundus images and two types of brain MRI images to delineate structures and patterns at different scales. When evaluated against predefined anatomical masks, CUTS improved the dice coefficient and Hausdorff distance by at least 10% compared to existing unsupervised methods. Finally, CUTS showed performance on par with Segment Anything Models (SAM, MedSAM, SAM-Med2D) pre-trained on gigantic labeled datasets.

Exploring Cross-Domain Few-Shot Classification via Frequency-Aware Prompting

Cross-Domain Few-Shot Learning has witnessed great stride with the development of meta-learning. However, most existing methods pay more attention to learning domain-adaptive inductive bias (meta-knowledge) through feature-wise manipulation or task diversity improvement while neglecting the phenomenon that deep networks tend to rely more on high-frequency cues to make the classification decision, which thus degenerates the robustness of learned inductive bias since high-frequency information is vulnerable and easy to be disturbed by noisy information. Hence in this paper, we make one of the first attempts to propose a Frequency-Aware Prompting method with mutual attention for Cross-Domain Few-Shot classification, which can let networks simulate the human visual perception of selecting different frequency cues when facing new recognition tasks. Specifically, a frequency-aware prompting mechanism is first proposed, in which high-frequency components of the decomposed source image are switched either with normal distribution sampling or zeroing to get frequency-aware augment samples. Then, a mutual attention module is designed to learn generalizable inductive bias under CD-FSL settings. More importantly, the proposed method is a plug-and-play module that can be directly applied to most off-the-shelf CD-FLS methods. Experimental results on CD-FSL benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method as well as robustly improve the performance of existing CD-FLS methods. LLIC: Large Receptive Field Transform Coding with Adaptive Weights for Learned Image Compression

The effective receptive field (ERF) plays an important role in transform coding, which determines how much redundancy can be removed during transform and how many spatial priors can be utilized to synthesize textures during inverse transform. Existing methods rely on stacks of small kernels, whose ERFs remain insufficiently large, or heavy non-local attention mechanisms, which limit the potential of high-resolution image coding. To tackle this issue, we propose Large Receptive Field Transform Coding with Adaptive Weights for Learned Image Compression (LLIC). Specifically, for the first time in the learned image compression community, we introduce a few large kernelbased depth-wise convolutions to reduce more redundancy while maintaining modest complexity. Due to the wide range of image diversity, we further propose a mechanism to augment convolution adaptability through the self-conditioned generation of weights. The large kernels cooperate with non-linear embedding and gate mechanisms for better expressiveness and lighter pointwise interactions. Our investigation extends to refined training methods that unlock the full potential of these large kernels. Moreover, to promote more dynamic inter-channel interactions, we introduce an adaptive channel-wise bit allocation strategy that autonomously generates channel importance factors in a self-conditioned manner. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed transform coding, we align the entropy model to compare with existing transform methods and obtain models LLIC-STF, LLIC-ELIC, and LLIC-TCM. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed LLIC models have significant improvements over the corresponding baselines and reduce the BD-Rate by 9.49%, 9.47%, 10.94% on Kodak over VTM-17.0 Intra, respectively. Our LLIC models achieve state-of-the-art performances and better trade-offs between performance and complexity.

DIAS: A Dataset and Benchmark for Intracranial Artery Segmentation in DSA sequences

The automated segmentation of Intracranial Arteries (IA) in Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) plays a crucial role in the quantification of vascular morphology, significantly contributing to computer-assisted stroke research and clinical practice. Current research primarily focuses on the segmentation of single-frame DSA using proprietary datasets. However, these methods face challenges due to the inherent limitation of single-frame DSA, which only partially displays vascular contrast, thereby hindering accurate vascular structure representation. In this work, we introduce DIAS, a dataset specifically developed for IA segmentation in DSA sequences. We establish a comprehensive benchmark for evaluating DIAS, covering full, weak, and semi-supervised segmentation methods. Specifically, we propose the vessel sequence segmentation network, in which the sequence feature extraction module effectively captures spatiotemporal representations of intravascular contrast, achieving intracranial artery segmentation in 2D+Time DSA sequences. For weakly-supervised IA segmentation, we propose a novel scribble learning-based image segmentation framework, which, under the guidance of scribble labels, employs cross pseudo-supervision and consistency regularization to improve the performance of the segmentation network. Furthermore, we introduce the random patch-based self-training framework, aimed at alleviating the performance constraints encountered in IA segmentation due to the limited availability of annotated DSA data. Our extensive experiments on the DIAS dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of these methods as potential baselines for future research and clinical applications. The dataset and code are publicly available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.11396520 and https://github.com/lseventeen/DIAS.

LSKSANet: A Novel Architecture for Remote Sensing Image Semantic Segmentation Leveraging Large Selective Kernel and Sparse Attention Mechanism

In this paper, we proposed large selective kernel and sparse attention network (LSKSANet) for remote sensing image semantic segmentation. The LSKSANet is a lightweight network that effectively combines convolution with sparse attention mechanisms. Specifically, we design large selective kernel module to decomposing the large kernel into a series of depth-wise convolutions with progressively increasing dilation rates, thereby expanding the receptive field without significantly increasing the computational burden. In addition, we introduce the sparse attention to keep the most useful self-attention values for better feature aggregation. Experimental results on the Vaihingen and Postdam datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed LSKSANet over state-of-the-art methods.

Boosting Spatial-Spectral Masked Auto-Encoder Through Mining Redundant Spectra for HSI-SAR/LiDAR Classification

Although recent masked image modeling (MIM)-based HSI-LiDAR/SAR classification methods have gradually recognized the importance of the spectral information, they have not adequately addressed the redundancy among different spectra, resulting in information leakage during the pretraining stage. This issue directly impairs the representation ability of the model. To tackle the problem, we propose a new strategy, named Mining Redundant Spectra (MRS). Unlike randomly masking spectral bands, MRS selectively masks them by similarity to increase the reconstruction difficulty. Specifically, a random spectral band is chosen during pretraining, and the selected and highly similar bands are masked. Experimental results demonstrate that employing the MRS strategy during the pretraining stage effectively improves the accuracy of existing MIM-based methods on the Berlin and Houston 2018 datasets.

Arctic Sea Ice Image Super-Resolution Based on Multi-Scale Convolution and Dual-Gating Mechanism

Arctic Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) is the ratio of ice-covered area to the total sea area of the Arctic Ocean, which is a key indicator for maritime activities. Nowadays, we often use passive microwave images to display SIC, but it has low spatial resolution, and most of the existing super-resolution methods of Arctic SIC don't take the integration of spatial and channel features into account and can't effectively integrate the multi-scale feature. To overcome the aforementioned issues, we propose MFM-Net for Arctic SIC super-resolution, which concurrently aggregates multi-scale information while integrating spatial and channel features. Extensive experiments on Arctic SIC dataset from the AMSR-E/AMSR-2 SIC DT-ASI products from Ocean University of China validate the effectiveness of porposed MFM-Net.
