Shadow of a circular disformal Kerr black hole beyond GR

We have studied the shadows of a circular disformal Kerr black hole with a deformation parameter, which represents a rotating solution within a generalized scalar-tensor framework of Horndeski gravity that characterized by second-order field equations. Our result show that for the non-rotating case, the shadow remains perfectly circular, with its radius independent of the deformation parameter. For the rotating case, the size of the shadow decreases as the deformation parameter decreases, and the shape of the shadow gradually becomes more flattened. It is worth noting that while the shadow of a rotating black hole remains north-south symmetric for equatorial observers, this symmetry is broken once the observer moves away from the equatorial plane. For an observer in the northern hemisphere, the geometric center of the shadow shifts northward when $D_0<0$ and southward when $D_0>0$, while the opposite behavior occurs for observers in the southern hemisphere. These features in the black hole shadow originating from the scalar field could help us to understand the circular disformal Kerr black hole and generalized scalar-tensor framework of Horndeski gravity.

Polarized image of an equatorial emitting ring around a Konoplya-Zhidenko rotating non-Kerr black hole

We investigate the polarized images of an equatorial emitting ring around a Konoplya-Zhidenko rotating non-Kerr black hole, which introduces an additional deformation parameter. The deformation parameter $\eta$ allows the spin parameter to extend beyond the bounds imposed by the standard Kerr black hole. The results indicate that the polarized images depend not only on the magnetic field configuration, fluid velocity, and observer inclination angle, but also on the deformation parameter and the spin parameter. As the deformation parameter increases, the polarization intensity decreases monotonically. However, the magnitude of the Electric Vector Position Angle (EVPA) increases with $\eta$. Furthermore, we note that the parameter $\eta$ may induce subtle yet discernible azimuthal separation features, which could potentially distinguish it from the spin parameter and the magnetic field orientation angle. Nevertheless, these features are difficult to resolve under current observational conditions and await verification by future high-resolution facilities such as the next-generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT).

The images of Brans-Dicke-Kerr type naked singularities

We have studied the images of the Brans-Dicke-Kerr spacetime with a dimensionless Brans-Dicke parameter $\omega$, which belongs to axisymmetric rotating solutions in the Brans-Dicke theory. Our results show that the Brans-Dicke-Kerr spacetime with the parameter $\omega>-3/2$ represents naked singularities with distinct structures. For the case with $a \leq M$, the shadow in the Brans-Dicke-Kerr spacetime persists, gradually becomes flatter and smaller as $\omega$ decreases. Especially when $\omega<1/2$, the shadow in the image exhibit a very special ``jellyfish" shape and possesses a self-similar fractal structure. For the case with $a > M$, a distinct gray region consisting of two separate patches appears in the image observed by equatorial observers. This indicating that the Brans-Dicke-Kerr spacetime can be distinguished from the Kerr and Kerr-de Sitter cases based on its image. These effects of the Brans-Dicke parameter could help us to reveal the intrinsic structure of the Brans-Dicke-Kerr spacetimes and provide a foundation for testing Brans-Dicke theory through future high-precision observations.

Quasinormal Modes of a Massive Scalar Field in Slowly Rotating Einstein-Bumblebee Black Holes

In this study, we examine the impacts of black hole spin, Lorentz-violating parameter, and the scalar field's mass on quasinormal modes (QNMs) of rotating Einstein-Bumblebee black holes, including computations up to the second-order expansion in rotation parameters. We investigate two classes of Lorentz-violating rotating black holes: one constructed via the Newman-Janis algorithm and the other obtained by solving the field equations through a series expansion. Within the slow-rotation approximation framework, we derive the master equations governing a massive scalar field and compute the corresponding QNM frequencies numerically using both the continued fraction method and the matrix method. The numerical results indicate that the QNM frequencies exhibit increased sensitivity to negative $\ell$ variations, which reduces the influence of the field mass parameter $\tilde{\mu}$. Meanwhile, the spectral "cube" of NJA black holes shows slight compression for $m>0$ with $ \ell>0 $ and expansion for $m<0$ with $ \ell>0 $ compared to another black holes, where $m$ is approximately proportional to the spin parameter at first order, while richer structures and lifted degeneracy emerge at second order.

Magnetic reconnection and energy extraction from a Konoplya Zhidenko rotating non Kerr black hole

Recently, magnetic reconnection has attracted considerable attention as a novel energy extraction mechanism, relying on the rapid reconnection of magnetic field lines within the ergosphere. We have investigated the properties of the energy extraction via magnetic reconnection in a Konoplya-Zhidenko rotating non-Kerr black hole spacetime with an extra deformation parameter. Our results show that the positive deformation parameter expands the possible region of energy extraction and improves the maximum power, maximum efficiency, and the maximum ratio of energy extraction between magnetic reconnection and the Blandford-Znajek process. This means that in the Konoplya-Zhidenko rotating non-Kerr black hole spacetime one can extract more energy via magnetic reconnection than in the Kerr black hole case. These effects of the deformation parameter may provide valuable clues for future astronomical observations of black holes and verification of gravity theories.

Machine learning phase transitions of the three-dimensional Ising universality class

Exploration of the QCD phase diagram and critical point is one of the main goals in current relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The QCD critical point is expected to belong to a three-dimensional (3D) Ising universality class. Machine learning techniques are found to be powerful in distinguishing different phases of matter and provide a new way to study the phase diagram. We investigate phase transitions in the 3D cubic Ising model using supervised learning methods. It is found that a 3D convolutional neural network can be trained to effectivelly predict physical quantities in different spin configurations. With a uniform neural network architecture, it can encode phases of matter and identify both second- and first-order phase transitions. The important features that discriminate different phases in the classification processes are investigated. These findings can help study and understand QCD phase transitions in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Shadow of a disformal Kerr black hole in quadratic DHOST theories

We have studied the shadow of a disformal Kerr black hole with an extra deformation parameter, which belongs to non-stealth rotating solutions in quadratic Degenerate Higher Order Scalar Tensor (DHOST) theory. Our result show that the size of the shadow increases with the deformation parameter for the black hole with arbitrary spin parameter. However, the effect of the deformation parameter on the shadow shape depends heavily on the spin parameter of black hole and the sign of the deformation parameter. The change of the shadow shape becomes more distinct for the black hole with the more quickly rotation and the more negative deformation parameter. Especially, for the near-extreme black hole with negative deformation parameter, there exist a "pedicel"-like structure appeared in the shadow, which increases with the absolute value of deformation parameter. The eyebrow-like shadow and the self-similar fractal structures also appear in the shadow for the disformal Kerr black hole in DHOST theory. These features in the black hole shadow originating from the scalar field could help us to understand the non-stealth disformal Kerr black hole and quadratic DHOST theory.

Shadow of a rotating squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole

We study the shadow of a rotating squashed Kaluza-Klein (KK) black hole and the shadow is found to possess distinct properties from those of usual rotating black holes. It is shown that the shadow for a rotating squashed KK black hole is heavily influenced by the specific angular momentum of photon from the fifth dimension. Especially, as the parameters lie in a certain special range, there is no any shadow for a black hole, which does not emerge for the usual black holes. In the case where the black hole shadow exists, the shadow shape is a perfect black disk and its radius decreases with the rotation parameter of the black hole. Moreover, the change of the shadow radius with extra dimension parameter also depends on the rotation parameter of black hole. Finally, with the latest observation data, we estimate the angular radius of the shadow for the supermassive black hole Sgr $A^{*}$ at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy and the supermassive black hole in $M87$.

Electromagnetic emissions from near-horizon region of an extreme Kerr-Taub-Nut black hole

We have studied electromagnetic line emissions from near-horizon region in the extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole spacetime and then probe the effects of NUT charge on the electromagnetic line emissions. Due to the presence of the NUT charge, the equatorial plane is no more a symmetry plane of the KTN spacetime, which leads to that the dependence of electromagnetic line emission on the NUT charge for the observer in the Southern Hemisphere differs from that in the Northern one. Our result indicate that the electromagnetic line emission in the Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole case is brighter than that in the case of Kerr black hole for the observer in the equatorial plane or in the Southern Hemisphere, but it becomes more faint as the observer's position deviates far from the equatorial plane in the Northern one. Moreover, we also probe effects of redshift factor on electromagnetic emission from near-horizon region in the extremal Kerr-Taub-NUT black hole spacetime.

Energy extraction from a Konoplya-Zhidenko rotating non-Kerr black hole

We have investigated the properties of the ergosphere and the energy extraction by Penrose process in a Konoplya-Zhidenko rotating non-Kerr black hole spacetime. We find that the ergosphere becomes thin and the maximum efficiency of energy extraction decreases as the deformation parameter increases. For the case with $a M$, we find that the maximum efficiency can reach so high that it is almost unlimited as the positive deformation parameter is close to zero, which is a new feature of energy extraction in such kind of rotating non-Kerr black hole spacetime.
