Pressure induced band structure evolution of halide perovskites: a first-principles atomic and electronic structure study

Density functional theory (DFT) based calculations have been conducted to draw a broad picture of pressure induced band structure evolution in various phases of organic and inorganic halide perovskite materials. Under a wide range of pressure applied, distinct band structure behaviors including magnitude change of band gap, direct-indirect/indirect-direct band gap transitions and CBM/VBM shifts, have been observed between organic and inorganic perovskites among different phases. Through atomic and electronic structure calculations, band gap narrowing/widening has been rationalized through crystal orbitals coupling transformations; direct-indirect mutual transitions were explained based on structural symmetry evolution; different VBM/CBM shifts behaviors between organic and inorganic perovskites were analyzed focusing on orientation and polarity of molecules/atoms outside the octahedrals. These results provide a comprehensive guidance for further experimental investigations on pressure engineering of perovskite materials.

Boosted Sparse and Low-Rank Tensor Regression

We propose a sparse and low-rank tensor regression model to relate a univariate outcome to a feature tensor, in which each unit-rank tensor from the CP decomposition of the coefficient tensor is assumed to be sparse. This structure is both parsimonious and highly interpretable, as it implies that the outcome is related to the features through a few distinct pathways, each of which may only involve subsets of feature dimensions. We take a divide-and-conquer strategy to simplify the task into a set of sparse unit-rank tensor regression problems. To make the computation efficient and scalable, for the unit-rank tensor regression, we propose a stagewise estimation procedure to efficiently trace out its entire solution path. We show that as the step size goes to zero, the stagewise solution paths converge exactly to those of the corresponding regularized regression. The superior performance of our approach is demonstrated on various real-world and synthetic examples.

A Self-Organizing Tensor Architecture for Multi-View Clustering

In many real-world applications, data are often unlabeled and comprised of different representations/views which often provide information complementary to each other. Although several multi-view clustering methods have been proposed, most of them routinely assume one weight for one view of features, and thus inter-view correlations are only considered at the view-level. These approaches, however, fail to explore the explicit correlations between features across multiple views. In this paper, we introduce a tensor-based approach to incorporate the higher-order interactions among multiple views as a tensor structure. Specifically, we propose a multi-linear multi-view clustering (MMC) method that can efficiently explore the full-order structural information among all views and reveal the underlying subspace structure embedded within the tensor. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that our proposed MMC algorithm clearly outperforms other related state-of-the-art methods.

Efficient Multi-level Correlating for Visual Tracking

Correlation filter (CF) based tracking algorithms have demonstrated favorable performance recently. Nevertheless, the top performance trackers always employ complicated optimization methods which constraint their real-time applications. How to accelerate the tracking speed while retaining the tracking accuracy is a significant issue. In this paper, we propose a multi-level CF-based tracking approach named MLCFT which further explores the potential capacity of CF with two-stage detection: primal detection and oriented re-detection. The cascaded detection scheme is simple but competent to prevent model drift and accelerate the speed. An effective fusion method based on relative entropy is introduced to combine the complementary features extracted from deep and shallow layers of convolutional neural networks (CNN). Moreover, a novel online model update strategy is utilized in our tracker, which enhances the tracking performance further. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach outperforms the most state-of-the-art trackers while tracking at speed of exceeded 16 frames per second on challenging benchmarks.

High Performance Visual Tracking with Circular and Structural Operators

In this paper, a novel circular and structural operator tracker (CSOT) is proposed for high performance visual tracking, it not only possesses the powerful discriminative capability of SOSVM but also efficiently inherits the superior computational efficiency of DCF. Based on the proposed circular and structural operators, a set of primal confidence score maps can be obtained by circular correlating feature maps with their corresponding structural correlation filters. Furthermore, an implicit interpolation is applied to convert the multi-resolution feature maps to the continuous domain and make all primal confidence score maps have the same spatial resolution. Then, we exploit an efficient ensemble post-processor based on relative entropy, which can coalesce primal confidence score maps and create an optimal confidence score map for more accurate localization. The target is localized on the peak of the optimal confidence score map. Besides, we introduce a collaborative optimization strategy to update circular and structural operators by iteratively training structural correlation filters, which significantly reduces computational complexity and improves robustness. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in mean AUC scores of 71.5% and 69.4% on the OTB-2013 and OTB-2015 benchmarks respectively, and obtains a third-best expected average overlap (EAO) score of 29.8% on the VOT-2017 benchmark.

Supervised Nonnegative Matrix Factorization to Predict ICU Mortality Risk

ICU mortality risk prediction is a tough yet important task. On one hand, due to the complex temporal data collected, it is difficult to identify the effective features and interpret them easily; on the other hand, good prediction can help clinicians take timely actions to prevent the mortality. These correspond to the interpretability and accuracy problems. Most existing methods lack of the interpretability, but recently Subgraph Augmented Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (SANMF) has been successfully applied to time series data to provide a path to interpret the features well. Therefore, we adopted this approach as the backbone to analyze the patient data. One limitation of the raw SANMF method is its poor prediction ability due to its unsupervised nature. To deal with this problem, we proposed a supervised SANMF algorithm by integrating the logistic regression loss function into the NMF framework and solved it with an alternating optimization procedure. We used the simulation data to verify the effectiveness of this method, and then we applied it to ICU mortality risk prediction and demonstrated its superiority over other conventional supervised NMF methods.

Analytical Soft SUSY Spectrum in Mirage-Type Mediation Scenarios

We derive explicitly the soft SUSY breaking parameters at arbitrary low energy scale in the (deflected) mirage type mediation scenarios with possible gauge or Yukawa mediation contributions. Based on the Wilsonian effective action after integrating out the messengers, we obtain analytically the boundary value (at the GUT scale) dependencies of the effective wavefunctions and gauge kinetic terms. Note that the messenger scale dependencies of the effective wavefunctions and gauge kinetic terms had already been discussed in GMSB. The RGE boundary value dependencies, which is a special feature in (deflected) mirage type mediation, is the key new ingredients in this study. The appearance of $'mirage'$ unification scale in mirage mediation is proved rigorously with our analytical results. We also discuss briefly the new features in deflected mirage mediation scenario in the case the deflection comes purely from the Kahler potential and the case with messenger-matter interactions.

Unconventional Planar Hall Effect in Exchange-Coupled Topological Insulator-Ferromagnetic Insulator Heterostructures

The Dirac electrons occupying the surface states (SSs) of topological insulators (TIs) have been predicted to exhibit many exciting magneto-transport phenomena. Here we report on the first experimental observation of an unconventional planar Hall effect (PHE) and an electrically gate-tunable hysteretic planar magnetoresistance (PMR) in EuS/TI heterostructures, in which EuS is a ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) with an in-plane magnetization. In such exchange-coupled FMI/TI heterostructures, we find a significant (suppressed) PHE when the in-plane magnetic field is parallel (perpendicular) to the electric current. This behavior differs from previous observations of the PHE in ferromagnets and semiconductors. Furthermore, as the thickness of the 3D TI films is reduced into the 2D limit, in which the Dirac SSs develop a hybridization gap, we find a suppression of the PHE around the charge neutral point indicating the vital role of Dirac SSs in this phenomenon. To explain our findings, we outline a symmetry argument that excludes linear-Hall mechanisms and suggest two possible non-linear Hall mechanisms that can account for all the essential qualitative features in our observations.

The Devil of Face Recognition is in the Noise

The growing scale of face recognition datasets empowers us to train strong convolutional networks for face recognition. While a variety of architectures and loss functions have been devised, we still have a limited understanding of the source and consequence of label noise inherent in existing datasets. We make the following contributions: 1) We contribute cleaned subsets of popular face databases, i.e., MegaFace and MS-Celeb-1M datasets, and build a new large-scale noise-controlled IMDb-Face dataset. 2) With the original datasets and cleaned subsets, we profile and analyze label noise properties of MegaFace and MS-Celeb-1M. We show that a few orders more samples are needed to achieve the same accuracy yielded by a clean subset. 3) We study the association between different types of noise, i.e., label flips and outliers, with the accuracy of face recognition models. 4) We investigate ways to improve data cleanliness, including a comprehensive user study on the influence of data labeling strategies to annotation accuracy. The IMDb-Face dataset has been released on https://github.com/fwang91/IMDb-Face.

Gated Fusion Network for Joint Image Deblurring and Super-Resolution

Single-image super-resolution is a fundamental task for vision applications to enhance the image quality with respect to spatial resolution. If the input image contains degraded pixels, the artifacts caused by the degradation could be amplified by super-resolution methods. Image blur is a common degradation source. Images captured by moving or still cameras are inevitably affected by motion blur due to relative movements between sensors and objects. In this work, we focus on the super-resolution task with the presence of motion blur. We propose a deep gated fusion convolution neural network to generate a clear high-resolution frame from a single natural image with severe blur. By decomposing the feature extraction step into two task-independent streams, the dual-branch design can facilitate the training process by avoiding learning the mixed degradation all-in-one and thus enhance the final high-resolution prediction results. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method generates sharper super-resolved images from low-resolution inputs with high computational efficiency.

Large Margin Structured Convolution Operator for Thermal Infrared Object Tracking

Compared with visible object tracking, thermal infrared (TIR) object tracking can track an arbitrary target in total darkness since it cannot be influenced by illumination variations. However, there are many unwanted attributes that constrain the potentials of TIR tracking, such as the absence of visual color patterns and low resolutions. Recently, structured output support vector machine (SOSVM) and discriminative correlation filter (DCF) have been successfully applied to visible object tracking, respectively. Motivated by these, in this paper, we propose a large margin structured convolution operator (LMSCO) to achieve efficient TIR object tracking. To improve the tracking performance, we employ the spatial regularization and implicit interpolation to obtain continuous deep feature maps, including deep appearance features and deep motion features, of the TIR targets. Finally, a collaborative optimization strategy is exploited to significantly update the operators. Our approach not only inherits the advantage of the strong discriminative capability of SOSVM but also achieves accurate and robust tracking with higher-dimensional features and more dense samples. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to incorporate the advantages of DCF and SOSVM for TIR object tracking. Comprehensive evaluations on two thermal infrared tracking benchmarks, i.e. VOT-TIR2015 and VOT-TIR2016, clearly demonstrate that our LMSCO tracker achieves impressive results and outperforms most state-of-the-art trackers in terms of accuracy and robustness with sufficient frame rate.

A Complementary Tracking Model with Multiple Features

Discriminative Correlation Filters based tracking algorithms exploiting conventional handcrafted features have achieved impressive results both in terms of accuracy and robustness. Template handcrafted features have shown excellent performance, but they perform poorly when the appearance of target changes rapidly such as fast motions and fast deformations. In contrast, statistical handcrafted features are insensitive to fast states changes, but they yield inferior performance in the scenarios of illumination variations and background clutters. In this work, to achieve an efficient tracking performance, we propose a novel visual tracking algorithm, named MFCMT, based on a complementary ensemble model with multiple features, including Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOGs), Color Names (CNs) and Color Histograms (CHs). Additionally, to improve tracking results and prevent targets drift, we introduce an effective fusion method by exploiting relative entropy to coalesce all basic response maps and get an optimal response. Furthermore, we suggest a simple but efficient update strategy to boost tracking performance. Comprehensive evaluations are conducted on two tracking benchmarks demonstrate and the experimental results demonstrate that our method is competitive with numerous state-of-the-art trackers. Our tracker achieves impressive performance with faster speed on these benchmarks.

On intelligent energy harvesting

We probe the potential for intelligent intervention to enhance the power output of energy harvesters. We investigate general principles and a case study: a bi-resonant piezo electric harvester. We consider intelligent interventions via pre-programmed reversible energy-conserving operations. We find that in important parameter regimes these can outperform diode-based intervention, which in contrast has a fundamental minimum power dissipation bound.

Diffusion Adaptation Framework for Compressive Sensing Reconstruction

Compressive sensing(CS) has drawn much attention in recent years due to its low sampling rate as well as high recovery accuracy. As an important procedure, reconstructing a sparse signal from few measurement data has been intensively studied. Many reconstruction algorithms have been proposed and shown good reconstruction performance. However, when dealing with large-scale sparse signal reconstruction problem, the storage requirement will be high, and many algorithms also suffer from high computational cost. In this paper, we propose a novel diffusion adaptation framework for CS reconstruction, where the reconstruction is performed in a distributed network. The data of measurement matrix are partitioned into small parts and are stored in each node, which assigns the storage load in a decentralized manner. The local information interaction provides the reconstruction ability. Then, a simple and efficient gradient-descend based diffusion algorithm has been proposed to collaboratively recover the sparse signal over network. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is analyzed. To further increase the convergence speed, a mini-batch based diffusion algorithm is also proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can achieve good reconstruction accuracy as well as fast convergence speed.

PEPS++: Towards Extreme-scale Simulations of Strongly Correlated Quantum Many-particle Models on Sunway TainhuLight

The study of strongly frustrated magnetic systems has drawn great attentions from both theoretical and experimental physics. Efficient simulations of these models are essential for understanding their exotic properties. Here we present PEPS++, a novel computational paradigm for simulating frustrated magnetic systems and other strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. PEPS++ can accurately solve these models at the extreme scale with low cost and high scalability on modern heterogeneous supercomputers. We implement PEPS++ on Sunway TaihuLight based on a carefully designed tensor computation library for manipulating high-rank tensors and optimize it by invoking various high-performance matrix and tensor operations. By solving a 2D strongly frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ model with over ten million cores, PEPS++ demonstrates the capability of simulating strongly correlated quantum many-body problems at unprecedented scales with accuracy and time-to-solution far beyond the previous state of the art.

Explaining the DAMPE data with scalar dark matter and gauged $U(1)_{L_e-L_μ}$ interaction

Inspired by the peak structure observed by recent DAMPE experiment in $e^+e^-$ cosmic-ray spectrum, we consider a scalar dark matter (DM) model with gauged $U(1)_{L_e-L_μ}$ symmetry, which is the most economical anomaly-free theory to potentially explain the peak by DM annihilation in nearby subhalo. We utilize the process $χχ\to Z^\prime Z^\prime \to l \bar{l} l^\prime \bar{l}^\prime$, where $χ$, $Z^\prime$, $l^{(\prime)}$ denote the scalar DM, the new gauge boson and $l^{(\prime)} =e, μ$, respectively, to generate the $e^+e^-$ spectrum. By fitting the predicted spectrum to the experimental data, we obtain the favored DM mass range $m_χ\simeq 3060^{+80}_{-100} \, {\rm GeV}$ and $Δm \equiv m_χ- m_{Z^\prime} \lesssim 14 \, {\rm GeV}$ at $68\%$ Confidence Level (C.L.). Furthermore, we determine the parameter space of the model which can explain the peak and meanwhile satisfy the constraints from DM relic abundance, DM direct detection and the collider bounds. We conclude that the model we consider can account for the peak, although there exists a tension with the constraints from the LEP-II bound on $m_{Z^\prime}$ arising from the cross section measurement of $e^+e^- \to Z^{\prime\ast} \to e^+ e^-$.

NMSSM From Alternative Deflection in Generalized Deflected Anomaly Mediated SUSY Breaking

We propose a new approach to generate messenger-matter interactions in deflected anomaly mediated SUSY breaking mechanism from typical holomorphic messenger-matter mixing terms in the Kahler potential. This approach is a unique feature of AMSB and has no analog in GMSB-type scenarios. New coupling strengths from the scaling of the (already known) Yukawa couplings always appear in this approach. With messenger-matter interactions in deflected AMSB, we can generate a realistic soft SUSY breaking spectrum for next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model(NMSSM). Successful electroweak symmetry breaking conditions, which is not easy to satisfy in NMSSM for ordinary AMSB-type scenario, can be satisfied in a large portion of parameter space in our scenarios. We study the relevant phenomenology for scenarios with (Bino-like) neutralino and axino LSP, respectively. In the case of axino LSP, the SUSY contributions to $Δa_μ$ can possibly account for the muon $g-2$ discrepancy. The corresponding gluino masses, which are found to below 2.2 TeV, could be tested soon at LHC.

The linearized Vlasov and Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations in a uniform magnetic field

We study the linearized Vlasov equations and the linearized Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations in the weakly collisional limit in a uniform magnetic field. In both cases, we consider periodic confinement and Maxwellian (or close to Maxwellian) backgrounds. In the collisionless case, for modes transverse to the magnetic field, we provide a precise decomposition into a countably infinite family of standing waves for each spatial mode. These are known as Bernstein modes in the physics literature, though the decomposition is not an obvious consequence of any existing arguments that we are aware of. We show that other modes undergo Landau damping. In the presence of collisions with collision frequency $ν\ll 1$, we show that these modes undergo uniform-in-$ν$ Landau damping and enhanced collisional relaxation at the time-scale $O(ν^{-1/3})$. The modes transverse to the field are uniformly stable and exponentially thermalize on the time-scale $O(ν^{-1})$. Most of the results are proved using Laplace transform analysis of the associated Volterra equations, whereas a simple case of Yan Guo's energy method for hypocoercivity of collision operators is applied for stability in the collisional case.
