A modification of Faddeev-Popov approach free from Gribov ambiguity

We propose a modified version of the Faddeev-Popov quantization approach for non-Abelian gauge field theory to avoid the Gribov ambiguity. We show that by means of introducing a new method to insert the correct identity into the Yang-Mills generating functional and considering the identity generated by an integral through a subgroup of the gauge group, the problem of the Gribov ambiguity can be removed naturally. Meanwhile by handling the absolute value of the Faddeev-Popov determinant with the method introduced by Williams and collaborators, we lift the Jacobian determinant together with the absolute value and obtain a local Lagrangian. The new Lagrangian have a nilpotent symmetry which can be viewed as an analogue of the BRST symmetry.

Superlight inverse Doppler effect

There is a century-old tenet [1, 2] that the inverse Doppler frequency shift of light [3-13] is impossible in homogeneous systems with a positive refractive index. Here we break this long-held tenet by predicting a new kind of Doppler effect of light inside the Cherenkov cone. Ever since the classic work of Ginzburg and Frank, it has been known that a superlight (i.e., superluminal) normal Doppler effect [14-18] appears inside the Cherenkov cone when the velocity of the source v is larger than the phase velocity of light v_p. By further developing their theory we discover that an inverse Doppler frequency shift will arise when v>2v_p. We denote this as the superlight inverse Doppler effect. Moreover, we show that the superlight inverse Doppler effect can be spatially separated from the other Doppler effects by using highly squeezed polaritons (such as graphene plasmons), which may facilitate the experimental observation.

A Parameter Estimation of Fractional Order Grey Model Based on Adaptive Dynamic Cat Swarm Algorithm

In this paper, we utilize ADCSO (Adaptive Dynamic Cat Swarm Optimization) to estimate the parameters of Fractional Order Grey Model. The parameters of Fractional Order Grey Model affect the prediction accuracy of the model. In order to solve the problem that general swarm intelligence algorithms easily fall into the local optimum and optimize the accuracy of the model, ADCSO is utilized to reduce the error of the model. Experimental results for the data of container throughput of Wuhan Port and marine capture productions of Zhejiang Province show that the different parameter values affect the prediction results. The parameters estimated by ADCSO make the prediction error of the model smaller and the convergence speed higher, and it is not easy to fall into the local convergence compared with PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) and LSM (Least Square Method). The feasibility and advantage of ADCSO for the parameter estimation of Fractional Order Grey Model are verified.

Ge hole spin qubit

Holes confined in quantum dots have gained considerable interest in the past few years due to their potential as spin qubits. Here we demonstrate double quantum dot devices in Ge hut wires. Low temperature transport measurements reveal Pauli spin blockade. We demonstrate electric-dipole spin resonance by applying a radio frequency electric field to one of the electrodes defining the double quantum dot. Next, we induce coherent hole spin oscillations by varying the duration of the microwave burst. Rabi oscillations with frequencies reaching 140MHz are observed. Finally, Ramsey experiments reveal dephasing times of 130ns. The reported results emphasize the potential of Ge as a platform for fast and scalable hole spin qubit devices.

Multifrequency superscattering from subwavelength hyperbolic structures

Superscattering, i.e., a phenomenon of the scattering cross section from a subwavelength object exceeding the single-channel limit, has important prospects in enhanced sensing/spectroscopy, solar cells, and biomedical imaging. Superscattering can be typically constructed only at a single frequency regime, and depends critically on the inescapable material losses. Under such realistic conditions, superscattering has not been predicted nor observed to exist simultaneously at multiple frequency regimes. Here we introduce multifrequency superscattering in a subwavelength hyperbolic structure, which can be made from artificial metamaterials or from naturally-existing materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (BN), and show the advantage of such hyperbolic materials for reducing structural complexity. The underlying mechanism is revealed to be the multimode resonances at multiple frequency regimes as appear in BN due to the peculiar dispersion of phonon-polaritons. Importantly, the multifrequency superscattering has a high tolerance to material losses and some structural variations, bringing the concept of multifrequency superscattering closer to useful and realistic conditions.

Colour Confinement: a Dynamical Phenomenon of QCD

We study in this Letter the origin of the confinement in QCD by analyzing the colour charge of physics states. We derive the colour charge operator in QCD and compare it with the electromagnetic charge operator in QED. It shows that the two charges have very similar structure, but the dynamical properties of the gauge fields are different. The difference between the behaviours of the gauge boson propagator at zero momentum for QCD and that for QED guarantees that there occurs colour confinement in QCD but there is no confinement in QED. We give then a universal relation between the confinement and the dynamical property of QCD and reveals the origin of the colour confinement, which can be demonstrated as the dynamical effect of QCD or more explicitly the dynamical mass generation of the gluon.

Asymptotic Quantum Algorithm for the Toeplitz Systems

Solving the Toeplitz systems, which is to find the vector $x$ such that $T_nx = b$ given an $n\times n$ Toeplitz matrix $T_n$ and a vector $b$, has a variety of applications in mathematics and engineering. In this paper, we present a quantum algorithm for solving the linear equations of Toeplitz matrices, in which the Toeplitz matrices are generated by discretizing a continuous function. It is shown that our algorithm's complexity is nearly $O(κ\textrm{log}^2 n)$, where $κ$ and $n$ are the condition number and the dimension of $T_n$ respectively. This implies our algorithm is exponentially faster than the best classical algorithm for the same problem if $κ=O(\textrm{poly}(\textrm{log}\,n))$. Since no assumption on the sparseness of $T_n$ is demanded in our algorithm, it can serve as an example of quantum algorithms for solving non-sparse linear systems.

Sorting and Routing Topologically Protected Edge States by their Valleys

We experimentally demonstrate and characterize a photonic platform containing heterogeneous topological phases. This platform is shown to support valley-spin locked edge states that can be routed based on their spin and valley degrees of freedom. The routing is accomplished by changing the topology of the valley photonic crystal embedded inside a spin-Hall photonic crystal.

Many-box locality

There is an ongoing search for a physical or operational definition for quantum mechanics. Several informational principles have been proposed which are satisfied by a theory less restrictive than quantum mechanics. Here, we introduce the principle of "many-box locality", which is a refined version of the previously proposed "macroscopic locality". These principles are based on coarse-graining the statistics of several copies of a given box. The set of behaviors satisfying many-box locality for $N$ boxes is denoted $MBL_N$. We study these sets in the bipartite scenario with two binary measurements, in relation with the sets $\mathcal{Q}$ and $\mathcal{Q}_{1+AB}$ of quantum and "almost quantum" correlations. We find that the $MBL_N$ sets are in general not convex. For unbiased marginals, by working in the Fourier space we can prove analytically that $MBL_{N}\subsetneq\mathcal{Q}$ for any finite $N$, while $MBL_{\infty}=\mathcal{Q}$. Then, with suitably developed numerical tools, we find an example of a point that belongs to $MBL_{16}$ but not to $\mathcal{Q}_{1+AB}$. Among the problems that remain open, is whether $\mathcal{Q}\subset MBL_{\infty}$.

Many-body theory for proton-induced point-defect effects on losses of electron energy and photons in quantum wells

The effects of point defects on the loss of either energies of ballistic electron beams or incident photons are studied by using a many-body theory in a multi-quantum-well system. This includes the defect-induced vertex correction to a bare polarization function of electrons within the ladder approximation as well as the intralayer and interlayer screening of defect-electron interactions are also taken into account in the random-phase approximation. The numerical results of defect effects on both energy-loss and optical-absorption spectra are presented and analyzed for various defect densities, number of quantum wells, and wave vectors. The diffusion-reaction equation is employed for calculating distributions of point defects in a layered structure. For completeness, the production rate for Frenkel-pair defects and their initial concentration are obtained based on atomic-level molecular-dynamics simulations. By combining defect-effect, diffusion-reaction and molecular-dynamics models proposed in this paper with a space-weather forecast model for the first time, it will be possible to enable specific designing for electronic and optoelectronic quantum devices that will be operated in space with radiation-hardening protection, and therefore, will effectively extend the lifetime of these satellite onboard electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Latent fingerprint minutia extraction using fully convolutional network

Minutiae play a major role in fingerprint identification. Extracting reliable minutiae is difficult for latent fingerprints which are usually of poor quality. As the limitation of traditional handcrafted features, a fully convolutional network (FCN) is utilized to learn features directly from data to overcome complex background noises. Raw fingerprints are mapped to a correspondingly-sized minutia-score map with a fixed stride. And thus a large number of minutiae will be extracted through a given threshold. Then small regions centering at these minutia points are entered into a convolutional neural network (CNN) to reclassify these minutiae and calculate their orientations. The CNN shares convolutional layers with the fully convolutional network to speed up. 0.45 second is used on average to detect one fingerprint on a GPU. On the NIST SD27 database, we achieve 53\% recall rate and 53\% precise rate that outperform many other algorithms. Our trained model is also visualized to show that we have successfully extracted features preserving ridge information of a latent fingerprint.

FingerNet: An Unified Deep Network for Fingerprint Minutiae Extraction

Minutiae extraction is of critical importance in automated fingerprint recognition. Previous works on rolled/slap fingerprints failed on latent fingerprints due to noisy ridge patterns and complex background noises. In this paper, we propose a new way to design deep convolutional network combining domain knowledge and the representation ability of deep learning. In terms of orientation estimation, segmentation, enhancement and minutiae extraction, several typical traditional methods performed well on rolled/slap fingerprints are transformed into convolutional manners and integrated as an unified plain network. We demonstrate that this pipeline is equivalent to a shallow network with fixed weights. The network is then expanded to enhance its representation ability and the weights are released to learn complex background variance from data, while preserving end-to-end differentiability. Experimental results on NIST SD27 latent database and FVC 2004 slap database demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art minutiae extraction algorithms. Code is made publicly available at: https://github.com/felixTY/FingerNet.

A Universal Constraint on the Infrared Behavior of the Ghost Propagator in QCD

With proposing a unified description of the fields variation at the level of generating functional, we obtain a new identity for the quark-gluon interaction vertex based on gauge symmetry, which is similar to the Slavnov-Taylor Identities(STIs) based on the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin transformation. With these identities, we find that in Landau gauge, the dressing function of the ghost propagator approaches to a constant as its momentum goes to zero, which provides a strong constraint on the infrared behaviour of ghost propagator.

Locating the Gribov horizon

We explore whether a tree-level expression for the gluon two-point function, supposed to express effects of an horizon term introduced to eliminate the Gribov ambiguity, is consistent with the propagator obtained in simulations of lattice-regularised quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In doing so, we insist that the gluon two-point function obey constraints that ensure a minimal level of consistency with parton-like behaviour at ultraviolet momenta. In consequence, we are led to a position which supports a conjecture that the gluon mass and horizon scale are equivalent emergent mass-scales, each with a value of roughly $0.5\,$GeV; and wherefrom it appears plausible that the dynamical generation of a running gluon mass may alone be sufficient to remove the Gribov ambiguity.

A generic construction of quantum-oblivious-key-transfer-based private query with ideal database security and zero failure

Higher security and lower failure probability have always been people's pursuits in quantum-oblivious-key-transfer-based private query (QOKT-PQ) protocols since Jacobi \emph{et al}. [Phys. Rev. A 83, 022301 (2011)] proposed the first protocol of this kind. However, higher database security generally has to be obtained at the cost of a higher failure probability, and vice versa. Recently, based on a round-robin differential-phase-shift quantum key distribution protocol, Liu \emph{et al}. [Sci. China-Phys. Mech. Astron.58, 100301 (2015)] presented a private query protocol (RRDPS-PQ protocol) utilizing ideal single-photon signal which realizes both ideal database security and zero failure probability. However, ideal single-photon source is not available today, and for large database the required pulse train is too long to implement. Here, we reexamine the security of RRDPS-PQ protocol under imperfect source and present an improved protocol using a special "low-shift and addition" (LSA) technique, which not only can be used to query from large database but also retains the features of "ideal database security" and "zero-failure" even under weak coherent source. Finally, we generalize the LSA technique and establish a generic QOKT-PQ model in which both "ideal database security" and "zero failure" are achieved via acceptable communications.

Topologically-protected refraction of robust kink states in valley photonic crystals

Recently discovered valley photonic crystals (VPCs) mimic many of the unusual properties of two-dimensional gapped valleytronic materials such as bilayer graphene or MoS2. Of the utmost interest to optical communications is their ability to support topologically protected chiral edge (kink) states at the internal domain wall between two VPCs with spectrally overlapping bandgap zones and opposite half-integer valley-Chern indices. We experimentally demonstrate the robustness of the kink states in VPCs that support degenerate transverse-electric-like (TE) and transverse-magnetic-like (TM) topological phases, thus enabling polarization multiplexing in a single topological waveguide. The propagation direction of the kink states is locked to the valleys of the reverse Brave lattice and, therefore, cannot be reversed in the absence of inter-valley scattering. At the intersection between the internal domain wall and the external edge separating the VPCs from free space, the kink states are shown to exhibit >97% out-coupling efficiency into directional free-space beams. This constitutes the first experimental demonstration of meron-like valley-projected topological phases with half-integer valley-Chern indices.

Efficient Inexact Proximal Gradient Algorithm for Nonconvex Problems

The proximal gradient algorithm has been popularly used for convex optimization. Recently, it has also been extended for nonconvex problems, and the current state-of-the-art is the nonmonotone accelerated proximal gradient algorithm. However, it typically requires two exact proximal steps in each iteration, and can be inefficient when the proximal step is expensive. In this paper, we propose an efficient proximal gradient algorithm that requires only one inexact (and thus less expensive) proximal step in each iteration. Convergence to a critical point %of the nonconvex problem is still guaranteed and has a $O(1/k)$ convergence rate, which is the best rate for nonconvex problems with first-order methods. Experiments on a number of problems demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has comparable performance as the state-of-the-art, but is much faster.

Exposing strangeness: projections for kaon electromagnetic form factors

A continuum approach to the kaon and pion bound-state problems is used to reveal their electromagnetic structure. For both systems, when used with parton distribution amplitudes appropriate to the scale of the experiment, Standard Model hard-scattering formulae are accurate to within 25% at momentum transfers $Q^2 \approx 8\,$GeV$^2$. There are measurable differences between the distribution of strange and normal matter within the kaons, e.g. the ratio of their separate contributions reaches a peak value of $1.5$ at $Q^2 \approx 6\,$GeV$^2$. Its subsequent $Q^2$-evolution is accurately described by the hard scattering formulae. Projections for kaon and pion form factors at timelike momenta beyond the resonance region are also presented. These results and projections should prove useful in planning next-generation experiments.
