New Type IIB Poly-instanton Effects and Axion Quintessence

Previous studies of poly-instantons in type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifolds found that these effects arise when Euclidean D3-branes wrap rigid cycles with a Wilson line. In this work, we extend this result through a general analysis of instanton zero modes, revealing the existence of new poly-instanton effects for rigid cycles with a deformation, provided that O3-planes are localised on the worldvolume of the Euclidean D3-brane. We provide concrete Calabi-Yau examples with explicit orientifold involution and brane setup. One of them is particularly well suited for realising axion hilltop quintessence. In particular, the double exponential suppression of poly-instanton effects allows to reproduce the observed vacuum energy for natural values of the underlying parameters.

Rational K3 Homotopy and the Largest Mathieu Group

We interpret the ranks of the rational homotopy groups of a K3 surface as dimensions of representations for the largest sporadic simple Mathieu group. We then construct a vertex algebra equipped with an action by the largest Mathieu group, and use it to associate Jacobi forms to this interpretation, in a compatible way. Our results suggest a topological role for the sporadic simple Mathieu groups in the theory of K3 surfaces.

BPS spectroscopy with reinforcement learning

We apply reinforcement learning (RL) to establish whether at a given position in the Coulomb branch of the moduli space of a 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ quantum field theory (QFT) the BPS spectrum is finite. If it is, we furthermore determine the full BPS spectrum at such point in moduli space. We demonstrate that using a RL model one can efficiently determine the suitable sequence of quiver mutations of the BPS quiver that will generate the full BPS spectrum. We analyse the performance of the RL model on random BPS quivers and show that it converges to a solution various orders of magnitude faster than a systematic brute-force scan. As a result, we show that our algorithm can be used to identify all minimal chambers of a given $\mathcal{N}=2$ QFT, a task previously intractable with computer scanning. As an example, we recover all minimal chambers of the $\text{SU}(2)$ $N_f = 4$ gauge theory, and discover new minimal chambers for theories that can be realized by IIB geometric engineering.

Fuzzy Axions and Associated Relics

We study fuzzy axion dark matter in type IIB string theory, for axions descending from the Ramond-Ramond four-form in compactifications on orientifolds of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. Such models can be tested by cosmological measurements if a significant relic abundance of fuzzy dark matter arises, which we argue is most common in models with small numbers of axions. We construct a topologically exhaustive ensemble of more than 350,000 Calabi-Yau compactifications yielding up to seven axions, and in this setting we perform a systematic analysis of misalignment production of fuzzy dark matter. In typical regions of moduli space, the fuzzy axion, the QCD axion, and other axions have comparable decay constants of $f_a \approx 10^{16}$ GeV. We find that overproduction of heavier axions is problematic, except at special loci in moduli space where decay constant hierarchies can occur: without a contrived reheating epoch, it is necessary to fine-tune initial displacements. The resulting dark matter is typically a mix of fuzzy axions and heavier axions, including the QCD axion. Dark photons are typically present as a consequence of the orientifold projection. We examine the signatures of these models by simulating halos with multiple fuzzy axions, and by computing new cosmological constraints on ultralight axions and dark radiation. We also give evidence that cosmic birefringence is possible in this setting. Our findings determine the phenomenological correlates of fuzzy axion dark matter in a corner of the landscape.

On brane systems with O${}^+$ planes -- 5d and 6d SCFTs

We study Higgs branches of field theories with 8 supercharges in 5 and 6 dimensions, focusing on theories realised on 5-brane webs in Type IIB with an O$7^+$ plane, or a D6-D8-NS5 brane system in Type IIA in the presence of an O$8^+$ plane. We find magnetic quivers for the Higgs branches of these theories. The main consequence of the presence of the orientifold is that it renders the magnetic quiver to be non-simply-laced. We propose a contribution of the O$7^+$ to the usual stable intersection number of 5-branes from tropical geometry, and show that it is consistent with Fayet-Iliopoulos deformations of magnetic quivers which represent mass deformations of 5d SQFTs. From the magnetic quivers, we compute phase diagrams and highest weight generating functions for the Higgs branches, enabling us to identify the global form of the flavour symmetry for several families of 5d SQFTs; among them Bhardwaj's rank-1 theory. For 6d theories realised on a $-4$ curve, we observe the appearance of an additional $D_4$ slice on top of the phase diagram as one goes to the tensionless limit.

Comments on Non-invertible Symmetries in Argyres-Douglas Theories

We demonstrate the presence of non-invertible symmetries in an infinite family of superconformal Argyres-Douglas theories. This class of theories arises from diagonal gauging of the flavor symmetry of a collection of multiple copies of $D_p(\mathrm{SU}(N))$ theories. The same set of theories that we study can also be realized from 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ compactification on a torus. The main example in this class is the $(A_2, D_4)$ theory. We show in detail that this specific theory bears the same structures of non-invertible duality and triality defects as those of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{su}(2)$. We extend this result to infinitely many other Argyres-Douglas theories in the same family, including those with central charges $a=c$ whose conformal manifold is one dimensional, and those with $a\neq c$ whose conformal manifold has dimension larger than one. Our result is supported by examining certain special cases that can be realized in terms of theories of class $\mathcal{S}$.

A tale of 2-groups: D$_p$(USp(2N)) theories

A 1-form symmetry and a 0-form symmetry may combine to form an extension known as the 2-group symmetry. We find the presence of the latter in a class of Argyres-Douglas theories, called $D_p($USp$(2N))$, which can be realized by $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted compactification of the 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ of the $D$-type on a sphere with an irregular twisted puncture and a regular twisted full puncture. We propose the $3$d mirror theories of general $D_p($USp$(2N))$ theories that serve as an important tool to study their flavor symmetry and Higgs branch. Yet another important result is presented: We elucidate a technique, dubbed ''bootstrap'', which generates an infinite family of $D^b_p(G)$ theories, where for a given arbitrary group $G$ and a parameter $b$, each theory in the same family has the same number of mass parameters, same number of marginal deformations, same $1$-form symmetry, and same $2$-group structure. This technique is utilized to establish the presence or absence of the 2-group symmetries in several classes of $D^b_p(G)$ theories. In this regard, we find that the $D_p($USp$(2N))$ theories constitute a special class of Argyres-Douglas theories that have a 2-group symmetry.

Dynamical consequences of 1-form symmetries and the exceptional Argyres-Douglas theories

Higher-form symmetries have proved useful in constraining the dynamics of a number of quantum field theories. In the context of the Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories of the $(G,G')$ type, we find that the 1-form symmetries are invariant under the Higgs branch flow, and that they are captured by the non-Higgsable sector at a generic point on the Higgs branch of the AD theory in question. As a consequence, dimensional reduction of an AD theory with a non-trivial 1-form symmetry to 3d leads to a free sector. We utilize these observations, along with other results, to propose systematically the mirror theories for the AD theories of the $(A_n, E_m)$ type. As a by-product of these findings, we discover many important results: the Flip-Flip duality for all $T[G]$ theories with simply-laced group $G$, including the exceptional ones; the class $\mathcal{S}$ descriptions of exceptional affine Dynkin diagram such that all gauge groups are special unitary; the universality of the mirror theories for $D_{h^\vee_G}(G)$ with $h^\vee_G$ the dual Coxeter number of $G$; and the triviality of the 2-group structure in the $(A_n, E_m)$ theories.

Exploring the orthosymplectic zoo

We study the Higgs branch of the SCFT limit of 5d SO(6) and SO(8) gauge theory with hypermultiplets in the spinor and vector representations. In the case of SO(6) gauge theories, we contrast the magnetic quivers obtained with those of SU(4) gauge theory with hypermultiplets in the fundamental and second rank antisymmetric representations. Since SU(4) gauge theories admit several different values of the Chern-Simons level, we make some observations about how to distinguish those theories from the brane webs of the SO(6) theories. In the case of SO(8) gauge theories, we use SO(8) triality to propose (naively) inequivalent magnetic quivers, which will turn out to have the same moduli spaces of vacua, at least locally around their most singular loci. We encounter several interesting new phenomena occurring in the magnetic quivers, such as hypermultiplets between neighbouring symplectic gauge nodes and matter in two-index representations of unitary nodes. We also give a prescription for computing the local Coulomb branch Hilbert series for quivers involving bad USp(2) gauge nodes.

Systematics of perturbatively flat flux vacua for CICYs

In this paper, we extend the analysis of scanning the perturbatively flat flux vacua (PFFV) for the type IIB orientifold compactifications on the mirror of the projective complete intersection Calabi-Yau (pCICY) 3-folds, which are realized as hypersurfaces in the product of complex projective spaces. We present the PFFV statistics for all the 36 pCICYs with $h^{1,1}=2$ and classify them into two categories of being K3-fibered model and non K3-fibered model. We find that all the K3-fibered models have a significantly large number of PFFV leading to physical vacua by fixing the axio-dilaton by non-perturbative effects, while only a couple of non K3-fibered models have such physical vacua. We have found that there are five pCICY $3$-folds with the suitable exchange symmetry leading to the so-called exponentially flat flux vacua (EFFV) which are protected against non-perturbative prepotential effects as well. Finally we explored the underlying exchange symmetries in the favorable dataset of 7820 pCICYs and have found that there are only 15 spaces which can result in EFFV configurations.

Divisor topologies of CICY 3-folds and their applications to phenomenology

In this article, we present a classification for the divisor topologies of the projective complete intersection Calabi-Yau (pCICY) 3-folds realized as hypersurfaces in the product of complex projective spaces. There are 7890 such pCICYs of which 7820 are favorable, and can be subsequently useful for phenomenological purposes. To our surprise we find that the whole pCICY database results in only 11 (so-called coordinate) divisors $(D)$ of distinct topology and we classify those surfaces with their possible deformations inside the pCICY 3-fold, which turn out to be satisfying $1 \leq h^{2,0}(D) \leq 7$. We also present a classification of the so-called ample divisors for all the favorable pCICYs which can be useful for fixing all the (saxionic) K\"ahler moduli through a single non-perturbative term in the superpotential. We argue that this relatively unexplored pCICY dataset equipped with the necessary model building ingredients, can be used for a systematic search of physical vacua. To illustrate this for model building in the context of type IIB CY orientifold compactifications, we present moduli stabilization with some preliminary analysis of searching possible vacua in simple models, as a template to be adopted for analyzing models with a larger number of K\"ahler moduli.

Systematics of perturbatively flat flux vacua

In this article, we present a systematic analysis of the so-called perturbatively flat flux vacua (PFFV) for the mirror Calabi-Yau (CY) $3$-folds ($\tilde{X}_3$) with $h^{1,1}(\tilde{X}_3) =2$ arising from the Kreuzer-Skarke database of the four-dimensional reflexive polytopes. We consider the divisor topologies of the CY $3$-folds for classifying the subsequent models into three categories; (i) models with the so-called Swiss-cheese structure, (ii) models with the $K3$-fibered structure, and (iii) the remaining ones which we call as models of "Hybrid type". In our detailed analysis of PFFV we find that for a given fixed value of the D$3$ tadpole charge $N_{\text{flux}}$, the $K3$-fibered mirror CY $3$-folds have significantly larger number of such PFFV as compared to those which have Swiss-cheese structure, while the Hybrid type models have a mixed behavior. We also compute the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants necessary for fixing the flat valley in the weak string-coupling and large complex-structure regime by using the non-perturbative effects, which subsequently reduce the number of physically trustworthy vacua quite significantly. Moreover, we find that there are some examples in which the PFFV are protected even at the leading orders of the non-perturbative effects due to the some underlying symmetry in the CY geometry, which we call as "Exponentially flat flux vacua". We also present a new class of PFFV using the $\mathcal{S}$-duality arguments.

Conformal Manifolds and 3d Mirrors of $(D_n,D_m)$ Theories

The Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories of type $(D_n,D_m)$, realized by type IIB geometrical engineering on a single hypersurface singularity, are studied. We analyze their conformal manifolds and propose the 3d mirror theories of all theories in this class upon reduction on a circle. A subclass of the AD theories in question that admits marginal couplings is found to be $\mathrm{SO}$ or $\mathrm{USp}$ gaugings of certain $D_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ and $D_p(\mathrm{USp}(2N))$ theories. For such theories, we develop a method to derive this weakly-coupled description from the Newton polygon associated to the singularity. We further find that the presence of crepant resolutions of the geometry is reflected in the presence of a (non-abelian) symplectic-type gauge node in the quiver description of the 3d mirror theory. The other important results include the 3d mirrors of all $D_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ theories, as well as certain properties of the $D_p(\mathrm{USp}(2N))$ theories that admit Lagrangian descriptions.

Thraxions: Towards Full String Models

We elucidate various aspects of the physics of thraxions, ultra-light axions arising at Klebanov-Strassler multi-throats in the compactification space of IIB superstring theory. We study the combined stabilization of K\"ahler moduli and thraxions, showing that under reasonable assumptions, one can solve the combined problem both in a KKLT and a LVS setup. We find that for non-minimal multi-throats, the thraxion mass squared is three-times suppressed by the throat warp factor. However, the minimal case of a double-throat can preserve the six-times suppression as originally found. We also discuss the backreaction of a non-vanishing thraxion vacuum expectation value on the geometry, showing that it induces a breaking of the imaginary self-duality condition for $3$-form fluxes. This in turn breaks the Calabi-Yau structure to a complex manifold one. Finally, we extensively search for global models which can accommodate the presence of multiple thraxions within the database of Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau orientifolds. We find that each multi-throat system holds a single thraxion. We further point out difficulties in constructing a full-fledged global model, due to the generic presence of frozen-conifold singularities in a Calabi-Yau orientifold. For this reason, we propose a new database (https://www.desy.de/~westphal/orientifold_webpage/cicy_thraxions.html) of CICY orientifolds that do not have frozen conifolds but that admit thraxions.

Magnetic quivers from brane webs with O7$^+$-planes

We consider the Higgs branch of 5d fixed points engineered using brane webs with an O7$^+$-plane. We use the brane construction to propose a set of rules to extract the corresponding magnetic quivers. Such magnetic quivers are generically framed non-simply-laced quivers containing unitary as well as special unitary gauge nodes. We compute the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of the proposed magnetic quivers. In some specific cases, an alternative magnetic quiver can be obtained either using an ordinary brane web or a brane web with an O5-plane. In these cases, we find a match at the level of the Hilbert series.

Conformal Manifolds and 3d Mirrors of Argyres-Douglas theories

Argyres-Douglas theories constitute an important class of superconformal field theories in $4$d. The main focus of this paper is on two infinite families of such theories, known as $D^b_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ and $(A_m, D_n)$. We analyze in depth their conformal manifolds. In doing so we encounter several theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ of twisted $A_{\text{odd}}$, twisted $A_{\text{even}}$ and twisted $D$ types associated with a sphere with one twisted irregular puncture and one twisted regular puncture. These models include $D_p(G)$ theories, with $G$ non-simply-laced algebras. A number of new properties of such theories are discussed in detail, along with new SCFTs that arise from partially closing the twisted regular puncture. Moreover, we systematically present the $3$d mirror theories, also known as the magnetic quivers, for the $D^b_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ theories, with $p \geq b$, and the $(A_m, D_n)$ theories, with arbitrary $m$ and $n$. We also discuss the $3$d reduction and mirror theories of certain $D^b_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ theories, with $p < b$, where the former arises from gauging topological symmetries of some $T^\sigma_\rho[\mathrm{SO}(2M)]$ theories that are not manifest in the Lagrangian description of the latter.

Factorised 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ orthosymplectic quivers

We study the moduli space of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories with unitary, orthogonal and symplectic gauge nodes, that fall into exceptional sequences. We find that both the Higgs and Coulomb branches of the moduli space factorise into decoupled sectors. Each decoupled sector is described by a single quiver gauge theory with only unitary gauge nodes. The orthosymplectic quivers serve as magnetic quivers for 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories which can be engineered in type IIB string theories both with and without an O5 plane. We use this point of view to postulate the dual pairs of unitary and orthosymplectic quivers by deriving them as magnetic quivers of the 5d theory. We use this correspondence to conjecture exact highest weight generating functions for the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of the orthosymplectic quivers, and provide tests of these results by directly computing the Hilbert series for the orthosymplectic quivers in a series expansion.

Gopakumar-Vafa Hierarchies in Winding Inflation and Uplifts

We propose a combined mechanism to realize both winding inflation and de Sitter uplifts. We realize the necessary structure of competing terms in the scalar potential not via tuning the vacuum expectation values of the complex structure moduli, but by a hierarchy of the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of the underlying Calabi-Yau threefold. To show that Calabi-Yau threefolds with the prescribed hierarchy actually exist, we explicitly create a database of all the genus $0$ Gopakumar-Vafa invariants up to total degree $10$ for all the complete intersection Calabi-Yau's up to Picard number $9$. As a side product, we also identify all the redundancies present in the CICY list, up to Picard number $13$. Both databases can be accessed at this link: https://www.desy.de/~westphal/GV_CICY_webpage/GVInvariants.html .
