Viscosity and variational approaches in free boundary problems: A Volume in Honor of Sandro Salsa

Free boundary problems (FBPs) are differential equations where the domain depends on the solution, with applications in diverse fields such as flame propagation, financial mathematics, and tumor growth. Classical examples include the Bernoulli problem, the obstacle problem, and the Stefan problem. The field has advanced significantly through variational and geometric approaches, notably by Alt, Caffarelli, and collaborators, who developed monotonicity formulas and viscosity solutions to address free boundary regularity. Extensions have included nonlinear operators, inhomogeneous problems, and lower-dimensional cases like the thin Bernoulli problem. Evolution problems, such as the Hele-Shaw flow, also connect to FBPs. To celebrate these developments and honor Sandro Salsa's pioneering contributions, a special session on FBPs was held at the AMS-UMI joint meeting in Palermo (2024). This is the editorial of a volume dedicated to Sandro Salsa on the occasion of his 75th birthday.

A transmission problem arising from the two-phase Stefan problem

We study a parabolic transmission problem whose interface condition depends on the time derivative of the solution. This model arises naturally as the linearized limiting profile of a two-phase inhomogeneous Stefan problem after the hodograph transform. Our main result shows the existence and uniqueness of a classical solution. We also prove a Harnack inequality for a general class of transmission problems and establish $C^{1,\alpha}$ estimates up to the interface from both sides. These results can be used to obtain $C^{1,\alpha}$ regularity of flat free boundaries for the two-phase Stefan problem with distributed sources.

Two-phase free boundary problems for operators with nonstandard growth

In this paper we focus the attention on free boundary problems ruled by partial differential equations with nonstandard growth, presenting in particular some recent results. The interest in these problems stems from the diverse applications that motivate their study and from the challenging mathematical difficulties they pose.

Lipschitz regularity of solutions to two-phase $p$-Laplacian free boundary problems with right hand side

We prove the local Lipschitz continuity of viscosity solutions for two-phase free boundary problems for the $p$-Laplacian with non-zero right hand side, where $p\in (1,\infty)$. This is the optimal regularity for the problem. We also obtain the local H\"older continuity for a larger class of problems. The results introduced here are new even in the homogeneous situation, that is, when the right hand side is zero. Our work applies to merely viscosity solutions, which allows a wide applicability.

On a fractional Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman-type monotonicity formula

In this note, by exploiting mean value properties of $s$-harmonic functions, we introduce some monotonicity formulas in the nonlocal setting. We take into account intrinsically nonlocal functionals mimicking those introduced by Alt, Caffarelli and Friedman in the seminal work [Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. (1984)]. Our approach is purely nonlocal and does not rely on the extension technique. As a byproduct we also established interior nonlocal gradient estimates and a nonlocal analogue of the Bochner identity.

On the Geometry of Solutions of the Fully Nonlinear Inhomogeneous One-Phase Stefan Problem

In this paper, we characterize the geometry of solutions to one-phase inhomogeneous fully nonlinear Stefan problem with flat free boundaries under a new nondegeneracy assumption. This continues the study of regularity of flat free boundaries for the linear inhomogeneous Stefan problem started in [9], as well as justifies the definition of flatness assumed in [15].

Lipschitz regularity for almost minimizers of a one-phase $p$-Bernoulli-type functional in Carnot Groups of step two

In this paper, in a Carnot group $\mathbb{G}$ of step $2$ and homogeneous dimension $Q$, we prove that almost minimizers of the (horizontal) one-phase $p$-Bernoulli-type functional $$ J_p(u,\Omega):=\int_{\Omega}\Big( |\nabla_{\mathbb{G}} u(x)|^p+\chi_{\{u>0\}}(x)\Big)\,dx$$ whenever $p>p^\#:=\frac{2Q}{Q+2}$, are locally Lipschitz continuous with respect Carnot-Carath\'eodory distance on $\mathbb{G}$. This implies an H\"older continuous regularity from an Euclidean point of view.

Free boundary regularity for the inhomogeneous one-phase Stefan problem

In this paper, we prove that flat free boundaries of solutions to inhomogeneous one-phase Stefan problem are $C^{1,\alpha}$. The method consists of employing a hodograph transform and deriving the regularity via a linearization technique, following the approach introduced by De Silva, Forcillo, and Savin in \cite{DFS23}.

Some counterexamples to Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman monotonicity formulas in Carnot groups

In this paper we continue the analysis of an Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman (ACF) monotonicity formula in Carnot groups of step $s >1$ confirming the existence of counterexamples to the monotone increasing behavior. In particular, we provide a sufficient condition that implies the existence of some counterexamples to the monotone increasing behavior of the ACF formula in Carnot groups. The main tool is based on the lack of orthogonality of harmonic polynomials in Carnot groups. This paper generalizes the results proved in \cite{ferrari2023counterexample}.

Regularity of Lipschitz free boundaries for a $p(x)$-Laplacian problem with right hand side

We continue our study in \cite{FL} on viscosity solutions to a one-phase free boundary problem for the $p(x)$-Laplacian with non-zero right hand side. We first prove that viscosity solutions are locally Lipschitz continuous, which is the optimal regularity for the problem. Then we prove that Lipschitz free boundaries of viscosity solutions are $C^{1,\alpha}$. We also present some applications of our results. Moreover, we obtain new results for the operator under consideration that are of independent interest, such as a Harnack inequality.
