Asymptotic limit for the isotropic-nematic problem with anisotropic elasticity

We consider the isotropic-nematic interface problem for liquid crystals based on the Landau-de Gennes model. We show that when the anisotropic elastic constant $L_2$ is negative, then the surface tension strength of the isotropic-nematic interface is proportional to $\sqrt{L_1+\frac{2}{3}{L}_2}$, and the homeotropic alignment is more favored near the interface. This result gives a rigorous confirmation for de Gennes' formal derivation in \cite{deGen1971} on the isotropic-nematic tension strength and the anchoring alignment condition in the case of $L_2<0$.

On Brezis Open Problem 3.1

Let $B_1$ be the unit disk in ${\mathbb R}^2$. We consider the harmonic map equation $$ -\Delta u=|\nabla u|^2u,$$ subject to the Dirichlet boundary condition $ u(e^{i\theta})=(R\cos\theta,R\sin\theta,\sqrt{1-R^2}):=g_R$, where $0<R<1$ and $u: B_1\to {\mathbb S}^2$ is understood in the weak harmonic-map sense. In 1983, Brezis and Coron proved the existence of two explicit solutions of this nonlinear Dirichlet problem and showed that they are the unique minimizers in their respective relative homotopy classes. In this paper, we resolve a long-standing open question originally posed in their work, later posed as Open Problem 3.1 in Brezis Favorite Open Problems List. Specifically, we prove that these two explicit maps are the only weak harmonic maps with boundary trace $g_{R}$, thereby providing a definitive affirmative answer to Brezis open problem. The proof is based on a boundary rigidity argument. An auxiliary potential $X$ associated with $u$, the Pohozaev identity for the Hopf differential, and the planar isoperimetric inequality imply $$|u_r|\equiv R, \qquad u_r\cdot u_\theta\equiv0 \qquad\text{on }\partial B_1. $$ Thus the Hopf differential vanishes on the boundary and hence, by holomorphicity, on the whole disk. The problem is then reduced to the conformal case, where a stereographic-coordinate classification gives exactly the two Brezis--Coron maps.

Remarks on the heat flow of harmonic maps into CAT(0)-spaces

In this paper, we present an alternate, elementary proof of the local Lipschitz regularity of the suitable weak solution of heat flow of harmonic maps into CAT(0)-metric spaces, whose existence was established by Lin, Segatti, Sire, and Wang through an elliptic regularization approach. The ideas of the proof are inspired by Korevaar and Schoen, and they work for any CAT(0)-metric space $(X,d)$ as the target and any complete Riemanan manifold $(M,g)$, with positive injectivity radius and bounded curvature, as the domain.

On a Problem Posed by Brezis and Mironescu

The purpose of this note is to present a positive answer to an open problem proposed in the recent book \cite{Brezis-Mironescu} by H. Brezis and P. Mironescu. It has been stated in this book {\it Sobolev Maps to the Circle} as Proposition 4.3. We demonstrate, in particular, the value of the least mass of the area minimizing integral rectifiable currents with a given boundary equals to the infimum of areas among smoothly immersed submanifolds with the same boundary, under the assumption that the boundary is that of a smooth submanifold.

Liquid crystals and topological vorticity: smoothness of mild solutions

We introduce several new models whose common feature is to take into account effects from topological vorticity. The macroscopic unknown is driven by a dissipative anomalous diffusion (of SQG-type) and is coupled with the orientation of the crystal, moving by the gradient flow of the energy of maps. The main idea of such models is to have a better insight on the vorticity formulation of the Liquid Crystal Flow and to tackle some regularity issues in the associated conserved geometric motions. One of the advantage of the present PDEs is to capture features of the Navier-Stokes equations (or Euler) through a {\sl scalar} unknown, keeping the advection-diffusion structure of the orientation field. We obtain regularity for mild solutions under natural assumptions for the initial data, which are actually near-optimal. Along the way, we also draw some links with natural models of (anti-)ferromagnets previously investigated.

Improved Berezin-Li-Yau inequality and Kr\"oger inequality and consequences

We provide quantitative improvements to the Berezin-Li-Yau inequality and the Kr\"oger inequality, in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$. The improvement on Kr\"oger's inequality resolves an open question raised by Weidl from 2006. The improvements allow us to show that, for any open bounded domains, there are infinite many Dirichlet eigenvalues satisfying P\'olya's conjecture if $n\ge 3$, and infinite many Neumann eigenvalues satisfying P\'olya's conjecture if $n\ge 5$ and the Neumann spectrum is discrete.

P\'olya's conjecture up to $\epsilon$-loss and quantitative estimates for the remainder of Weyl's law

Let $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ be a bounded Lipschitz domain. For any $\epsilon\in (0,1)$ we show that for any Dirichlet eigenvalue $\lambda_k(\Omega)>\Lambda(\epsilon,\Omega)$, it holds \begin{align*} k&\le (1+\epsilon)\frac{|\Omega|\omega(n)}{(2\pi)^n}\lambda_k(\Omega)^{n/2}, \end{align*} where $\Lambda(\epsilon,\Omega)$ is given explicitly. This reduces the $\epsilon$-loss version of P\'olya's conjecture to a computational problem. This estimate is based on quantitative estimates on the remainder of the Weyl law with explicit constants, which we give a new proof without using Neumann eigenvalues. Our arguments in deriving such uniform estimates yield also, in all dimensions $n\ge 2$, classes of domains that may even have rather irregular shapes or boundaries but satisfy P\'olya's conjecture. Another key observation is that on strip-tiling domains (and therefore any triangles for instance) one actually has better eigenvalue estimates than P\'olya conjectured.

Space of ancient caloric functions on some manifolds beyond volume doubling

Under a condition that breaks the volume doubling barrier, we obtain a time polynomial structure result on the space of ancient caloric functions with polynomial growth on manifolds. As a byproduct, it is shown that the finiteness result for the space of harmonic functions with polynomial growth on manifolds in \cite{CM97} and \cite{Li97} are essentially sharp, except for the multi-end cases, addressing an issue raised in \cite{CM98} and removing all {\it local} topological or geometric conditions on the manifold with respect to a reference point.

Nematic liquid crystal flow with partially free boundary

We study a simplified Ericksen-Leslie system modeling the flow of nematic liquid crystals with partially free boundary conditions. It is a coupled system between the Navier-Stokes equation for the fluid velocity with a transported heat flow of harmonic maps, and both of these parabolic equations are critical for analysis in two dimensions. The boundary conditions are physically natural and they correspond to the Navier slip boundary condition with zero friction for the velocity field and a Plateau-Neumann type boundary condition for the map. In this paper we construct smooth solutions of this coupled system that blow up in finite time at any finitely many given points on the boundary or in the interior of the domain.

Critical Sets of Elliptic Equations with Rapidly Oscillating Coefficients in Two Dimensions

In this paper we continue the study of critical sets of solutions $u_\e$ of second-order elliptic equations in divergence form with rapidly oscillating and periodic coefficients. In \cite{Lin-Shen-3d}, by controling the "turning" of approximate tangent planes, we show that the $(d-2)$-dimensional Hausdorff measures of the critical sets are bounded uniformly with respect to the period $\e$, provided that doubling indices for solutions are bounded. In this paper we use a different approach, based on the reduction of the doubling indices of $u_\e$, to study the two-dimensional case. The proof relies on the fact that the critical set of a homogeneous harmonic polynomial of degree two or higher in dimension two contains only one point.

Critical Sets of Solutions of Elliptic Equations in Periodic Homogenization

In this paper we study critical sets of solutions $u_\e$ of second-order elliptic equations in divergence form with rapidly oscillating and periodic coefficients. We show that the $(d-2)$-dimensional Hausdorff measures of the critical sets are bounded uniformly with respect to the period $\e$, provided that doubling indices for solutions are bounded. The key step is an estimate of "turning " for the projection of a non-constant solution $u_\e$ onto the subspace of spherical harmonics of order $\ell$, when the doubling index for $u_\e$ on a sphere $\partial B(0, r)$ is trapped between $\ell -\delta$ and $\ell +\delta$, for $r$ between $1$ and a minimal radius $r^*\ge C_0\e$. This estimate is proved by using harmonic approximation successively. With a suitable $L^2$ renormalization as well as rescaling we are able to control the accumulated errors introduced by homogenization and projection. Our proof also gives uniform bounds for Minkowski contents of the critical sets.

Riesz transform on exterior Lipschitz domains and applications

Let ${\mathscr{L}}=-\text{div}A\nabla$ be a uniformly elliptic operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$. Let $\Omega$ be an exterior Lipschitz domain, and let ${\mathscr{L}}_D$ and ${\mathscr{L}}_N$ be the operator ${\mathscr{L}}$ on $\Omega$ subject to the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values, respectively. We establish the boundedness of the Riesz transforms $\nabla{\mathscr{L}}_D^{-1/2}$, $\nabla {\mathscr{L}}_N^{-1/2}$ in $L^p$ spaces. As a byproduct, we show the reverse inequality $\|{\mathscr{L}}_D^{1/2}f\|_{L^p(\Omega)}\le C\|\nabla f\|_{L^p(\Omega)}$ holds for any $1<p<\infty$. The proof can be generalized to show the boundedness of the Riesz transforms, for operators with VMO coefficients on exterior Lipschitz or $C^1$ domains. The estimates can be also applied to the inhomogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann problems. These results are new even for the Dirichlet and Neumann of the Laplacian operator on the exterior Lipschitz and $C^1$ domains.

Two dimensional liquid crystal droplet problem with tangential boundary condition

This paper studies a shape optimization problem which reduces to a nonlocal free boundary problem involving perimeter. It is motivated by a study of liquid crystal droplets with a tangential anchoring boundary condition and a volume constraint. We establish in 2D the existence of an optimal shape that has two cusps on the boundary. We also prove the boundary of the droplet is a chord-arc curve with its normal vector field in the VMO space. In fact, the boundary curves of such droplets belong to the so-called Weil-Petersson class. In addition, the asymptotic behavior of the optimal shape when the volume becomes extremely large or small is also studied.

Matrix-valued Allen-Cahn equation and the Keller-Rubinstein-Sternberg problem

In this paper, we consider the sharp interface limit of a matrix-valued Allen-Cahn equation, which takes the form: $$\partial_t A=\Delta A-\varepsilon^{-2}( A A^{\mathrm{T}}A- A)~~\text{with}~~A:\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^m\to\mathbb{R}^{n\times n}.$$ We show that the sharp interface system is a two-phases flow system: the interface evolves according to the motion by mean curvature; in the two bulk phase regions, the solution obeys the heat flow of harmonic maps with values in $O^+(n)$ and $O^-(n)$ (represent the sets of $n\times n$ orthogonal matrices with determinant $+1$ and $-1$ respectively); on the interface, the phase matrices in two sides satisfy a novel mixed boundary condition. The above result provides a solution to the Keller-Rubinstein-Sternberg's (conjecture) problem in this $O(n)$ setting. Our proof relies on two key ingredients. First, in order to construct the approximate solution by matched asymptotic expansions as the standard approach does not seem to work, we introduce the notion of quasi-minimal connecting orbits. They satisfy the usual leading order equations up to some small higher order terms. In addition, the linearized systems around these quasi-minimal orbits needs to be solvable up to some good remainders. These flexibilities are needed for the possible "degenerations" or higher dimensional kernels for the linearized operators due to intriguing boundary conditions at the sharp interface. The second key point is to establish a spectral uniform lower bound estimate for the linearized operator around approximate solutions. To this end, we introduce additional decompositions to reduce the problem into the coercive estimates of several linearized operators for scalar functions and some singular product estimates which is accomplished by exploring special cancellation structures between eigenfunctions of these linearized operators.

Isotropic-Nematic Phase Transition and Liquid Crystal Droplets

Liquid crystal droplets are of great interest from physics and applications. Rigorous mathematical analysis is challenging as the problem involves harmonic maps (and in general the Oseen-Frank model), free interfaces and topological defects which could be either inside the droplet or on its surface along with some intriguing boundary anchoring conditions for the orientation configurations. In this paper, through a study of the phase transition between the isotropic and nematic states of liquid crystal based on the Ericksen model, we can show, when the size of droplet is much larger in comparison with the ratio of the Frank constants to the surface tension, a $\Gamma$-convergence theorem for minimizers. This $\Gamma$-limit is in fact the sharp interface limit for the phase transition between the isotropic and nematic regions when the small parameter $\varepsilon$, corresponding to the transition layer width, goes to zero. This limiting process not only provides a geometric description of the shape of the droplet as one would expect, and surprisingly it also gives the anchoring conditions for the orientations of liquid crystals on the surface of the droplet depending on material constants. In particular, homeotropic, tangential, and even free boundary conditions as assumed in earlier phenomenological modelings arise naturally provided that the surface tension, Frank and Ericksen constants are in suitable ranges.

Large $m$ asymptotics for minimal partitions of the Dirichlet eigenvalue

In this paper, we study large $m$ asymptotics of the $l^1$ minimal $m$-partition problem for Dirichlet eigenvalue. For any smooth domain $\Omega\in \mathbb{R}^n$ such that $|\Omega|=1$, we prove that the limit $\lim\limits_{m\rightarrow\infty}l_m^1(\Omega)=c_0$ exists, and the constant $c_0$ is independent of the shape of $\Omega$. Here $l_m^1(\Omega)$ denotes the minimal value of the normalized sum of the first Laplacian eigenvalues for any $m$-partition of $\Omega$.

Upper bounds of nodal sets for eigenfunctions of eigenvalue problems

The aim of this article is to provide a simple and unified way to obtain the sharp upper bounds of nodal sets of eigenfunctions for different types of eigenvalue problems on real analytic domains. The examples include biharmonic Steklov eigenvalue problems, buckling eigenvalue problems and champed-plate eigenvalue problems. The geometric measure of nodal sets are derived from doubling inequalities and growth estimates for eigenfunctions. It is done through analytic estimates of Morrey-Nirenberg and Carleman estimates.
