Shape design with phase field methods for structural hemivariational inequalities in contact problems

We develop mathematical models for shape design and topology optimization in structural contact problems involving friction between elastic and rigid bodies. The governing mechanical constraint is a nonlinear, non-smooth, and non-convex hemivariational inequality, which provides a more general and realistic description of frictional contact forces than standard variational inequalities, but is also more challenging due to its non-convexity. For energy-type shape functionals, the Eulerian derivative of the hemivariational inequality is derived through rigorous shape sensitivity analysis. The rationality of a regularization approach is justified by asymptotic analysis, and this method is further applied to handle the non-smoothness of general shape functionals in the sensitivity framework. Based on these theoretical results, a numerical boundary variational method is proposed for shape optimization. For topology optimization, three phase-field algorithms are developed: a gradient-flow phase-field method, a phase-field method with second-order regularization of the cost functional, and a phase-field method coupled with topological derivatives. To the best of our knowledge, these approaches are new for shape design in hemivariational inequalities. Various numerical experiments confirm the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed shape and topology optimization algorithms.

Optimal error analysis of an interior penalty virtual element method for fourth-order singular perturbation problems

In recent studies \cite{ZZ24, FY24}, the Interior Penalty Virtual Element Method (IPVEM) has been developed for solving a fourth-order singular perturbation problem, with uniform convergence established in the lowest-order case concerning the perturbation parameter. However, the resulting uniform convergence rate is only of half-order, which is suboptimal. In this work, we demonstrate that the proposed IPVEM in fact achieves optimal and uniform error estimates, even in the presence of boundary layers. The theoretical results are substantiated through extensive numerical experiments, which confirm the validity of the error estimates and highlight the method's effectiveness for singularly perturbed problems.

Numerical analysis of variational-hemivariational inequalities with applications in contact mechanics

Variational-hemivariational inequalities are an important mathematical framework for nonsmooth problems. The framework can be used to study application problems from physical sciences and engineering that involve non-smooth and even set-valued relations, monotone or non-monotone, among physical quantities. Since no analytic solution formulas are expected for variational-hemivariational inequalities from applications, numerical methods are needed to solve the problems. This paper focuses on numerical analysis of variational-hemivariational inequalities, reporting new results as well as surveying some recent published results in the area. A general convergence result is presented for Galerkin solutions of the inequalities under minimal solution regularity conditions available from the well-posedness theory, and C\'{e}a's inequalities are derived for error estimation of numerical solutions. The finite element method and the virtual element method are taken as examples of numerical methods, optimal order error estimates for the linear element solutions are derived when the methods are applied to solve three representative contact problems under certain solution regularity assumptions. Numerical results are presented to show the performance of both the finite element method and the virtual element method, including numerical convergence orders of the numerical solutions that match the theoretical predictions.

A posteriori error estimation for an interior penalty virtual element method of Kirchhoff plates

In this paper, we develop a residual-type a posteriori error estimation for an interior penalty virtual element method (IPVEM) for the Kirchhoff plate bending problem. Building on the work in \cite{FY2023IPVEM}, we adopt a modified discrete variational formulation that incorporates the $ H^1 $-elliptic projector in the jump and average terms. This allows us to simplify the numerical implementation by including the $ H^1 $-elliptic projector in the computable error estimators. We derive the reliability and efficiency of the a posteriori error bound by constructing an enriching operator and establishing some related error estimates that align with $C^0$-continuous interior penalty finite element methods. As observed in the a priori analysis, the interior penalty virtual elements exhibit similar behaviors to $C^0$-continuous elements despite its discontinuity. This observation extends to the a posteriori estimate since we do not need to account for the jumps of the function itself in the discrete scheme and the error estimators. As an outcome of the error estimator, an adaptive VEM is introduced by means of the mesh refinement strategy with the one-hanging-node rule. Numerical results from several benchmark tests confirm the robustness of the proposed error estimators and show the efficiency of the resulting adaptive VEM.

The interior penalty virtual element method for fourth-order singular perturbation problems

This paper is dedicated to the numerical solution of a fourth-order singular perturbation problem using the interior penalty virtual element method (IPVEM) proposed in [42]. The study introduces modifications to the jumps and averages in the penalty term, as well as presents an automated mesh-dependent selection of the penalty parameter. Drawing inspiration from the modified Morley finite element methods, we leverage the conforming interpolation technique to handle the lower part of the bilinear form. Through our analysis, we establish optimal convergence in the energy norm and provide a rigorous proof of uniform convergence concerning the perturbation parameter in the lowest-order case.

Large Universe Attribute-Based Encryption Scheme from Lattices

We propose a large universe attribute-based encryption (ABE ) scheme from lattices. It is inspired by Brent Waters' scheme which is a large universe attribute-based encryption using bilinear map. It is a very practical scheme but this scheme may not be security with the developing quantum computer. So we extend their good idea of large universe attribute-based encryption to lattices based cryptosystem. And our scheme is the first large universe ABE scheme from lattices. In a large universe ABE system any string can be used as attribute and attributes need not be determined at system setup. This is a desirable feature. And the master private key of our scheme is too short too a matrix. Moreover, our scheme is high efficient due to the ciphertext of our scheme is divided into three parts. Finally, under Learning with Errors assumption, we prove our scheme is secure under the select attribute attack.
