Sub-wavelength resonances in two-dimensional multi-layer elastic media

In this paper, we focus on the sub-wavelength resonances in two-dimensional elastic media characterized by high contrasts in both Lam\'e parameters and density. Our contributions are fourfold. First, it is proved that the operator $\hat{\mathbf{S}}_{\partial D}^{\omega}$, which serves as a leading order approximation to $\mathbf{S}_{\partial D}^{\omega}$ as $\omega\rightarrow0$, is invertible in the space $\mathcal{L}(L^{2}\left(\partial D)^{2},H^{1}(\partial D)^{2}\right)$. Second, based on layer potential techniques in combination with asymptotic analysis, we derive an original formula for the leading-order terms of sub-wavelength resonance frequencies, which are controlled by the determinant of the $3N \times 3N$ matrices. Specifically, there are $3N$ resonance frequencies within an $N$-nested layer structure. In addition, the scattering field exhibits an enhancement coefficient on the order of $\mathcal{O}(\omega^{-2})$ as the incident frequency $\omega$ approaches the resonance frequency. Third, by applying spectral properties to solve the corresponding eigenvalue problem, we compute the quantitative expressions for sub-wavelength resonance frequencies within a disk. Finally, some numerical experiments are provided to illustrate theoretical results and demonstrate the existence of the sub-wavelength resonance modes.

Existence and uniqueness of Generalized Polarization Tensors vanishing structures

This paper is concerned with the open problem proposed in Ammari et. al. Commun. Math.Phys, 2013. We first investigate the existence and uniqueness of Generalized Polarization Tensors (GPTs) vanishing structures locally in both two and three dimension by fixed point theorem. Employing the Brouwer Degree Theory and the local uniqueness, we prove that for any radius configuration of $N+1$ layers concentric disks (balls) and a fixed core conductivity, there exists at least one piecewise homogeneous conductivity distribution which achieves the $N$-GPTs vanishing. Furthermore, we establish a global uniqueness result for the case of proportional radius settings, and derive an interesting asymptotic configuration for structure with thin coatings. Finally, we present some numerical examples to validate our theoretical conclusions.

Real-Time Interactive Modeling and Simulation in Biological Physics and Active Matter with Mechanica

Modeling and simulation (M&S) has revolutionized the way modern engineered products are designed, tested and evaluated. Yet modeling and simulation is much less frequently applied in the study of natural biological and active matter systems. Two of the greatest challenges in applying M\&S approaches to natural biological systems are (1) difficulty in specifying a model, and developing a simulation from it, and (2) tuning and optimizing parameters. Here we address the first challenge directly, and develop a software library that can lead to progress in the second.

Yelp Food Identification via Image Feature Extraction and Classification

Yelp has been one of the most popular local service search engine in US since 2004. It is powered by crowd-sourced text reviews and photo reviews. Restaurant customers and business owners upload photo images to Yelp, including reviewing or advertising either food, drinks, or inside and outside decorations. It is obviously not so effective that labels for food photos rely on human editors, which is an issue should be addressed by innovative machine learning approaches. In this paper, we present a simple but effective approach which can identify up to ten kinds of food via raw photos from the challenge dataset. We use 1) image pre-processing techniques, including filtering and image augmentation, 2) feature extraction via convolutional neural networks (CNN), and 3) three ways of classification algorithms. Then, we illustrate the classification accuracy by tuning parameters for augmentations, CNN, and classification. Our experimental results show this simple but effective approach to identify up to 10 food types from images.
