MultiResolution Attention Extractor for Small Object Detection

Small objects are difficult to detect because of their low resolution and small size. The existing small object detection methods mainly focus on data preprocessing or narrowing the differences between large and small objects. Inspired by human vision "attention" mechanism, we exploit two feature extraction methods to mine the most useful information of small objects. Both methods are based on multiresolution feature extraction. We initially design and explore the soft attention method, but we find that its convergence speed is slow. Then we present the second method, an attention-based feature interaction method, called a MultiResolution Attention Extractor (MRAE), showing significant improvement as a generic feature extractor in small object detection. After each building block in the vanilla feature extractor, we append a small network to generate attention weights followed by a weighted-sum operation to get the final attention maps. Our attention-based feature extractor is 2.0 times the AP of the "hard" attention counterpart (plain architecture) on the COCO small object detection benchmark, proving that MRAE can capture useful location and contextual information through adaptive learning.

Exact Simulation for Multivariate Itô Diffusions

We provide the first generic exact simulation algorithm for multivariate diffusions. Current exact sampling algorithms for diffusions require the existence of a transformation which can be used to reduce the sampling problem to the case of a constant diffusion matrix and a drift which is the gradient of some function. Such transformation, called Lamperti transformation, can be applied in general only in one dimension. So, completely different ideas are required for exact sampling of generic multivariate diffusions. The development of these ideas is the main contribution of this paper. Our strategy combines techniques borrowed from the theory of rough paths, on one hand, and multilevel Monte Carlo on the other.

Quasi-One-Dimensional Higher-Order Topological Insulators

Quasi-1D materials Bi$_{4}$X$_{4}$ (X=Br,I) are prototype weak topological insulators (TI) in the $β$ phase. For the $α$ phases, recent high-throughput database screening suggests that Bi$_{4}$Br$_{4}$ is a rare higher-order TI (HOTI) whereas Bi$_{4}$I$_{4}$ has trivial symmetry indicators. Here we show that in fact the two $α$ phases are both pristine HOTIs yet with distinct termination-dependent hinge state patterns by performing first-principles calculations, analyzing coupled-edge dimerizations, inspecting surface lattice structures, constructing tight-binding models, and establishing boundary topological invariants. We reveal that the location of inversion center dictates Bi$_{4}$Br$_{4}$ (Bi$_{4}$I$_{4}$) to feature opposite (the same) dimerizations of a surface or intrinsic (bulk or extrinsic) origin at two side cleavage surfaces. We propose a variety of experiments to examine our predictions. Given the superior hinges along atomic chains, the structural transition at room temperature, and the extreme anisotropies in three axes, our results not only imply the possible existence of many topological materials beyond the scope of symmetry indicators but also establish a new TI paradigm and a unique material platform for exploring the interplay of geometry, symmetry, topology, and interaction.

Encoding in the Dark Grand Challenge: An Overview

A big part of the video content we consume from video providers consists of genres featuring low-light aesthetics. Low light sequences have special characteristics, such as spatio-temporal varying acquisition noise and light flickering, that make the encoding process challenging. To deal with the spatio-temporal incoherent noise, higher bitrates are used to achieve high objective quality. Additionally, the quality assessment metrics and methods have not been designed, trained or tested for this type of content. This has inspired us to trigger research in that area and propose a Grand Challenge on encoding low-light video sequences. In this paper, we present an overview of the proposed challenge, and test state-of-the-art methods that will be part of the benchmark methods at the stage of the participants' deliverable assessment. From this exploration, our results show that VVC already achieves a high performance compared to simply denoising the video source prior to encoding. Moreover, the quality of the video streams can be further improved by employing a post-processing image enhancement method.

Unsupervised Instance Segmentation in Microscopy Images via Panoptic Domain Adaptation and Task Re-weighting

Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) for nuclei instance segmentation is important for digital pathology, as it alleviates the burden of labor-intensive annotation and domain shift across datasets. In this work, we propose a Cycle Consistency Panoptic Domain Adaptive Mask R-CNN (CyC-PDAM) architecture for unsupervised nuclei segmentation in histopathology images, by learning from fluorescence microscopy images. More specifically, we first propose a nuclei inpainting mechanism to remove the auxiliary generated objects in the synthesized images. Secondly, a semantic branch with a domain discriminator is designed to achieve panoptic-level domain adaptation. Thirdly, in order to avoid the influence of the source-biased features, we propose a task re-weighting mechanism to dynamically add trade-off weights for the task-specific loss functions. Experimental results on three datasets indicate that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art UDA methods significantly, and demonstrates a similar performance as fully supervised methods.

TRAKO: Efficient Transmission of Tractography Data for Visualization

Fiber tracking produces large tractography datasets that are tens of gigabytes in size consisting of millions of streamlines. Such vast amounts of data require formats that allow for efficient storage, transfer, and visualization. We present TRAKO, a new data format based on the Graphics Layer Transmission Format (glTF) that enables immediate graphical and hardware-accelerated processing. We integrate a state-of-the-art compression technique for vertices, streamlines, and attached scalar and property data. We then compare TRAKO to existing tractography storage methods and provide a detailed evaluation on eight datasets. TRAKO can achieve data reductions of over 28x without loss of statistical significance when used to replicate analysis from previously published studies.

AdaNN: Adaptive Neural Network-based Equalizer via Online Semi-supervised Learning

The demand for high speed data transmission has increased rapidly, leading to advanced optical communication techniques. In the past few years, multiple equalizers based on neural network (NN) have been proposed to recover signal from nonlinear distortions. However, previous experiments mainly focused on achieving low bit error rate (BER) on certain dataset with an offline-trained NN, neglecting the generalization ability of NN-based equalizer when the properties of optical link change. The development of efficient online training scheme is urgently needed. In this paper, we've proposed an adaptive online training scheme, which can fine-tune parameters of NN-based equalizer without the help of an online training sequence. By introducing data augmentation and virtual adversarial training, the convergence speed has been accelerated by 4.5 times, compared with decision-directed self-training. The proposed adaptive NN-based equalizer is called "AdaNN". Its BER has been evaluated under two scenarios: a 56 Gb/s PAM4-modulated VCSEL-MMF optical link (100-m), and a 32 Gbaud 16QAM-modulated Nyquist-WDM system (960-km SSMF). In our experiments, with the help of AdaNN, BER values can be quickly stabilized below 1e-3 after trained with 10^5 unlabeled symbols. AdaNN shows great performance improvement compared with non-adaptive NN and conventional MLSE.

First-principles study of metal-graphene edge contact for ballistic Josephson junction

Edge-contacted superconductor-graphene-superconductor Josephson junction have been utilized to realize topological superconductivity, which have shown superconducting signatures in the quantum Hall regime. We perform the first-principles calculations to interpret electronic couplings at the superconductor-graphene edge contacts by investigating various aspects in hybridization of molybdenum d orbitals and graphene $π$ orbitals. We also reveal that interfacial oxygen defects play an important role in determining the doping type of graphene near the interface.

Design and Calibration of the High Energy Particle Monitor onboard the Insight-HXMT

Three high energy particle monitors (HPMs) employed onboard the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope Insight-HXMT) can detect the charged particles from South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) and hence provide the alert trigger for switch-on/off of the main detectors. Here a typical design of HPM with high stability and reliability is adopted by taking a plastic scintillator coupled with a small photomultiplier tube (PMT). The window threshold of HPM is designed as 1 MeV and 20 MeV for the incident electron and proton, respectively. Before the launch of Insight-HXMT, we performed in details the ground calibration of HPM. The measured energy response and its dependence on temperature are taken as essential input of Geant4 simulation for estimating the HPM count rate given with an incident particle energy spectrum. This serves as a guidance for choosing a reasonable working range of the PMT high voltage once the real SAA count rate is measured by HPM in orbit. So far the three HPMs have been working in orbit for more than two years. Apart from providing reliable alert trigger, the HPMs data are used as well to map the SAA region.

MIMO Amplify-and-Forward Precoding for Networked Control Systems

In this paper, we consider a MIMO networked control system (NCS) in which a sensor amplifies and forwards the observed MIMO plant state to a remote controller via a MIMO fading channel. We focus on the MIMO amplify-and-forward (AF) precoding design at the sensor to minimize a weighted average state estimation error at the remote controller subject to an average communication power gain constraint of the sensor. The MIMO AF precoding design is formulated as an infinite horizon average cost Markov decision process (MDP). To deal with the curse of dimensionality associated with the MDP, we propose a novel continuous-time perturbation approach and derive an asymptotically optimal closed-form priority function for the MDP. Based on this, we derive a closed-form first-order optimal dynamic MIMO AF precoding solution, and the solution has an event-driven control structure. Specifically, the sensor activates the strongest eigenchannel to deliver a dynamically weighted combination of the plant states to the controller when the accumulated state estimation error exceeds a dynamic threshold. We further establish technical conditions for ensuring the stability of the MIMO NCS, and show that the mean square error of the plant state estimation is $\mathcal{O}\left(\frac{1}{\bar{F}}\right)$, where $\bar{F}$ is the maximum AF gain of the MIMO AF precoding.

Inelastic electron tunneling in 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ evidenced by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

We report a detailed study of tunneling spectra measured on 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ ($x=0\sim 0.1$) single crystals using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The prominent gap-like feature unintelligible for a long time was found to be accompanied by some "in-gap" fine structures. By investigating the second-derivative spectra and their temperature and magnetic field dependencies, we were able to prove that inelastic electron tunneling is the origin of these features and obtain the Eliashberg function of 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ at atomic scale, providing a potential way to study the local Eliashberg function and phonon spectra of the related transition-metal dichalcogenides.

AIBench: An Agile Domain-specific Benchmarking Methodology and an AI Benchmark Suite

Domain-specific software and hardware co-design is encouraging as it is much easier to achieve efficiency for fewer tasks. Agile domain-specific benchmarking speeds up the process as it provides not only relevant design inputs but also relevant metrics, and tools. Unfortunately, modern workloads like Big data, AI, and Internet services dwarf the traditional one in terms of code size, deployment scale, and execution path, and hence raise serious benchmarking challenges. This paper proposes an agile domain-specific benchmarking methodology. Together with seventeen industry partners, we identify ten important end-to-end application scenarios, among which sixteen representative AI tasks are distilled as the AI component benchmarks. We propose the permutations of essential AI and non-AI component benchmarks as end-to-end benchmarks. An end-to-end benchmark is a distillation of the essential attributes of an industry-scale application. We design and implement a highly extensible, configurable, and flexible benchmark framework, on the basis of which, we propose the guideline for building end-to-end benchmarks, and present the first end-to-end Internet service AI benchmark. The preliminary evaluation shows the value of our benchmark suite---AIBench against MLPerf and TailBench for hardware and software designers, micro-architectural researchers, and code developers. The specifications, source code, testbed, and results are publicly available from the web site \url{http://www.benchcouncil.org/AIBench/index.html}.

Subtracting non-critical fluctuations in higher cumulants of conserved charges

Using the sample produced by the AMPT default model, we construct a corresponding mixed sample by the method of mixed events. The mixed sample provides an effective estimation for non-critical fluctuations which are caused by global and systematic effects. The dynamical cumulants of conserved charges are defined as the cumulants of the original sample minus the cumulants of the mixed sample. It is demonstrated that dynamical cumulants are subtracted statistical fluctuations, and centrality bin width or detection efficiency independent, in consistent with formulae corrected cumulants. Therefore, dynamical cumulants are helpful in obtaining critical fluctuations at the RHIC BES.

Residual-Recursion Autoencoder for Shape Illustration Images

Shape illustration images (SIIs) are common and important in describing the cross-sections of industrial products. Same as MNIST, the handwritten digit images, SIIs are gray or binary and containing shapes that are surrounded by large areas of blanks. In this work, Residual-Recursion Autoencoder (RRAE) has been proposed to extract low-dimensional features from SIIs while maintaining reconstruction accuracy as high as possible. RRAE will try to reconstruct the original image several times and recursively fill the latest residual image to the reserved channel of the encoder's input before the next trial of reconstruction. As a kind of neural network training framework, RRAE can wrap over other autoencoders and increase their performance. From experiment results, the reconstruction loss is decreased by 86.47% for convolutional autoencoder with high-resolution SIIs, 10.77% for variational autoencoder and 8.06% for conditional variational autoencoder with MNIST.

Pressure-Thresholded Response in Cylindrically Shocked Cyclotrimethylene Trinitramine (RDX)

We demonstrate a strongly thresholded response in cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) when it is cylindrically shocked using a novel waveguide geometry. Using ultrafast single-shot multi-frame imaging, we demonstrate that <100-μm diameter single crystals of RDX embedded in a polymer host deform along preferential planes for >100 ns after the shock first arrives in the crystal. We use in-situ imaging and time-resolved photoemission to demonstrate that short-lived chemistry occurs with complex deformation pathways. Using scanning electron microscopy and ultrasmall-angle X-ray scattering, we demonstrate that the shock-induced dynamics leave behind porous crystals, with pore shapes and sizes that change significantly with shock energy. A threshold pressure of ~ 12 GPa at the center of convergence separated the single-mode planar crystal deformations from the chemistry-coupled multi-plane dynamics at higher pressures. Our observations indicate preferential directions for deformation for our cylindrically shocked system, despite the applied stress along many different crystallographic planes.

Gravitational slingshots around black holes in a binary

The speed gain of a test mass from taking a gravitational slingshot around a celestial object (scattering centre) increases with the latter's speed and compactness (stronger deflection of the mass' trajectory becomes possible without it hitting the surface of the object). The black holes (BHs) in a tight binary (consisting of two black holes; we are not considering X-ray binaries), themselves moving at relativistic speeds, represent optimal scattering centres. Therefore, a sub-population of accreting matter particles, swept up into chaotic orbits around a BH binary, might repeatedly take slingshots and become accelerated to ultra-relativistic speeds (as seen by observers on Earth), ultimately escaping from the binary, as well as the fate of being devoured by a BH. The escaped particles can plausibly be observed on Earth as ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Investigating such a possibility would require general relativistic slingshot formulae due to the high speeds involved and the close encounters with BHs. We derive them in this paper, and show that the percentage gain per slingshot in a particle's Lorentz factor remains undiminished even as the particle energizes up, thus demonstrating that the slingshot mechanism can in principal accelerate particles to extreme energies.

Concurrently Extrapolating and Interpolating Networks for Continuous Model Generation

Most deep image smoothing operators are always trained repetitively when different explicit structure-texture pairs are employed as label images for each algorithm configured with different parameters. This kind of training strategy often takes a long time and spends equipment resources in a costly manner. To address this challenging issue, we generalize continuous network interpolation as a more powerful model generation tool, and then propose a simple yet effective model generation strategy to form a sequence of models that only requires a set of specific-effect label images. To precisely learn image smoothing operators, we present a double-state aggregation (DSA) module, which can be easily inserted into most of current network architecture. Based on this module, we design a double-state aggregation neural network structure with a local feature aggregation block and a nonlocal feature aggregation block to obtain operators with large expression capacity. Through the evaluation of many objective and visual experimental results, we show that the proposed method is capable of producing a series of continuous models and achieves better performance than that of several state-of-the-art methods for image smoothing.

Defects Mitigation in Resistive Crossbars for Analog Vector Matrix Multiplication

With storage and computation happening at the same place, computing in resistive crossbars minimizes data movement and avoids the memory bottleneck issue. It leads to ultra-high energy efficiency for data-intensive applications. However, defects in crossbars severely affect computing accuracy. Existing solutions, including re-training with defects and redundant designs, but they have limitations in practical implementations. In this work, we introduce row shuffling and output compensation to mitigate defects without re-training or redundant resistive crossbars. We also analyzed the coupling effects of defects and circuit parasitics. Moreover, We study different combinations of methods to achieve the best trade-off between cost and performance. Our proposed methods could rescue up to 10% of defects in ResNet-20 application without performance degradation.
