Multi-Graph based Multi-Scenario Recommendation in Large-scale Online Video Services

Recently, industrial recommendation services have been boosted by the continual upgrade of deep learning methods. However, they still face de-biasing challenges such as exposure bias and cold-start problem, where circulations of machine learning training on human interaction history leads algorithms to repeatedly suggest exposed items while ignoring less-active ones. Additional problems exist in multi-scenario platforms, e.g. appropriate data fusion from subsidiary scenarios, which we observe could be alleviated through graph structured data integration via message passing. In this paper, we present a multi-graph structured multi-scenario recommendation solution, which encapsulates interaction data across scenarios with multi-graph and obtains representation via graph learning. Extensive offline and online experiments on real-world datasets are conducted where the proposed method demonstrates an increase of 0.63% and 0.71% in CTR and Video Views per capita on new users over deployed set of baselines and outperforms regular method in increasing the number of outer-scenario videos by 25% and video watches by 116%, validating its superiority in activating cold videos and enriching target recommendation.

SkillNet-NLG: General-Purpose Natural Language Generation with a Sparsely Activated Approach

We present SkillNet-NLG, a sparsely activated approach that handles many natural language generation tasks with one model. Different from traditional dense models that always activate all the parameters, SkillNet-NLG selectively activates relevant parts of the parameters to accomplish a task, where the relevance is controlled by a set of predefined skills. The strength of such model design is that it provides an opportunity to precisely adapt relevant skills to learn new tasks effectively. We evaluate on Chinese natural language generation tasks. Results show that, with only one model file, SkillNet-NLG outperforms previous best performance methods on four of five tasks. SkillNet-NLG performs better than two multi-task learning baselines (a dense model and a Mixture-of-Expert model) and achieves comparable performance to task-specific models. Lastly, SkillNet-NLG surpasses baseline systems when being adapted to new tasks.

Phonon Stability of Quantum Droplets in a dipolar Bose gases

Stabilized by quantum fluctuations, dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates can form self-bound liquidlike droplets in the mean-field unstable regime. However in the Bogoliubov theory, some phonon energies are imaginary in the long-wavelength limit, implying dynamical instability of this system. A similar instability appears in the Bogoliubov theory of a binary quantum droplet, and is removed due to higher-order quantum fluctuations as shown recently [1]. In this work, we study the phonon energy of a dipolar quantum droplet in the Beliaev formalism, and find that quantum fluctuations can enhance the phonon stability. We obtain the anisotropic sound velocity which can be tested in experiment.

Magnetic phase transition induced ferroelectric polarization in BaFeF4 with room temperature weak ferromagnetism

BaMF4 (M=Fe, Co, Ni and Mn) family are typical multiferroic materials, having antiferromagnetism at around liquid nitrogen temperature. In this work, polycrystalline BaFeF4 has been prepared by solid state reaction. The slight deficiency of Fe leads to the coexistence of valence states of +2 and +3, facilitating the electrons to hop between the neighboring Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions through the middle F- ion, leading to the strong double exchange interaction with weak ferromagnetism above room temperature. A bifurcation at about 170 K between the zero-field-cooled and field-cooled temperature dependent magnetization curves indicates the onset of 2-dimensional antiferromagnetism, which is completed at about 125 K with the sudden drop of magnetization. Despite the fact of type-I multiferroic, its magnetoelectricity can be evidenced by the pyroelectric current, which shows a peak starting at about 170 K and finishing at about 125 K. The saturated ferroelectric polarization change of around 34 μC/m2 is observed, which is switchable by the reversed poling electric field and decreases to about 30 μC/m2 under a magnetic field of 90 kOe. This magnetoelectricity can be qualitatively reproduced by first-principles calculations. Our results represent substantial progress to search for high-temperature multiferroics in ferroelectric fluorides.

Enhancing Non-mass Breast Ultrasound Cancer Classification With Knowledge Transfer

Much progress has been made in the deep neural network (DNN) based diagnosis of mass lesions breast ultrasound (BUS) images. However, the non-mass lesion is less investigated because of the limited data. Based on the insight that mass data is sufficient and shares the same knowledge structure with non-mass data of identifying the malignancy of a lesion based on the ultrasound image, we propose a novel transfer learning framework to enhance the generalizability of the DNN model for non-mass BUS with the help of mass BUS. Specifically, we train a shared DNN with combined non-mass and mass data. With the prior of different marginal distributions in input and output space, we employ two domain alignment strategies in the proposed transfer learning framework with the insight of capturing domain-specific distribution to address the issue of domain shift. Moreover, we propose a cross-domain semantic-preserve data generation module called CrossMix to recover the missing distribution between non-mass and mass data that is not presented in training data. Experimental results on an in-house dataset demonstrate that the DNN model trained with combined data by our framework achieves a 10% improvement in AUC on the malignancy prediction task of non-mass BUS compared to training directly on non-mass data.

SAD: A Large-scale Dataset towards Airport Detection in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images

Airports have an important role in both military and civilian domains. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) based airport detection has received increasing attention in recent years. However, due to the high cost of SAR imaging and annotation process, there is no publicly available SAR dataset for airport detection. As a result, deep learning methods have not been fully used in airport detection tasks. To provide a benchmark for airport detection research in SAR images, this paper introduces a large-scale SAR Airport Dataset (SAD). In order to adequately reflect the demands of real world applications, it contains 624 SAR images from Sentinel 1B and covers 104 airfield instances with different scales, orientations and shapes. The experiments of multiple deep learning approach on this dataset proves its effectiveness. It developing state-of-the-art airport area detection algorithms or other relevant tasks.

Quasi-periodic oscillations of the X-ray burst from the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 and associated with the fast radio burst FRB 200428

The origin(s) and mechanism(s) of fast radio bursts (FRBs), which are short radio pulses from cosmological distances, have remained a major puzzle since their discovery. We report a strong Quasi-Periodic Oscillation(QPO) of 40 Hz in the X-ray burst from the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 and associated with FRB 200428, significantly detected with the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) and also hinted by the Konus-Wind data. QPOs from magnetar bursts have only been rarely detected; our 3.4 sigma (p-value is 2.9e-4) detection of the QPO reported here reveals the strongest QPO signal observed from magnetars (except in some very rare giant flares), making this X-ray burst unique among magnetar bursts. The two X-ray spikes coinciding with the two FRB pulses are also among the peaks of the QPO. Our results suggest that at least some FRBs are related to strong oscillation processes of neutron stars. We also show that we may overestimate the significance of the QPO signal and underestimate the errors of QPO parameters if QPO exists only in a fraction of the time series of a X-ray burst which we use to calculate the Leahy-normalized periodogram.

STICC: A multivariate spatial clustering method for repeated geographic pattern discovery with consideration of spatial contiguity

Spatial clustering has been widely used for spatial data mining and knowledge discovery. An ideal multivariate spatial clustering should consider both spatial contiguity and aspatial attributes. Existing spatial clustering approaches may face challenges for discovering repeated geographic patterns with spatial contiguity maintained. In this paper, we propose a Spatial Toeplitz Inverse Covariance-Based Clustering (STICC) method that considers both attributes and spatial relationships of geographic objects for multivariate spatial clustering. A subregion is created for each geographic object serving as the basic unit when performing clustering. A Markov random field is then constructed to characterize the attribute dependencies of subregions. Using a spatial consistency strategy, nearby objects are encouraged to belong to the same cluster. To test the performance of the proposed STICC algorithm, we apply it in two use cases. The comparison results with several baseline methods show that the STICC outperforms others significantly in terms of adjusted rand index and macro-F1 score. Join count statistics is also calculated and shows that the spatial contiguity is well preserved by STICC. Such a spatial clustering method may benefit various applications in the fields of geography, remote sensing, transportation, and urban planning, etc.

ST-MFNet: A Spatio-Temporal Multi-Flow Network for Frame Interpolation

Video frame interpolation (VFI) is currently a very active research topic, with applications spanning computer vision, post production and video encoding. VFI can be extremely challenging, particularly in sequences containing large motions, occlusions or dynamic textures, where existing approaches fail to offer perceptually robust interpolation performance. In this context, we present a novel deep learning based VFI method, ST-MFNet, based on a Spatio-Temporal Multi-Flow architecture. ST-MFNet employs a new multi-scale multi-flow predictor to estimate many-to-one intermediate flows, which are combined with conventional one-to-one optical flows to capture both large and complex motions. In order to enhance interpolation performance for various textures, a 3D CNN is also employed to model the content dynamics over an extended temporal window. Moreover, ST-MFNet has been trained within an ST-GAN framework, which was originally developed for texture synthesis, with the aim of further improving perceptual interpolation quality. Our approach has been comprehensively evaluated -- compared with fourteen state-of-the-art VFI algorithms -- clearly demonstrating that ST-MFNet consistently outperforms these benchmarks on varied and representative test datasets, with significant gains up to 1.09dB in PSNR for cases including large motions and dynamic textures. Global Attitude Synchronization of Networked Rigid Bodies Under Directed Topologies

The global attitude synchronization problem is studied for networked rigid bodies under directed topologies. To avoid the asynchronous pitfall where only vector parts converge to some identical value but scalar parts do not, multiplicative quaternion errors are leveraged to develop attitude synchronization protocols for rigid bodies with the absolute measurements. It is shown that global synchronization of networked rigid bodies can be achieved if and only if the directed topology is quasi-strongly connected. Simultaneously, a novel double-energy-function analysis method, equipped with an ordering permutation technique about scalar parts and a coordinate transformation mechanism, is constructed for the quaternion behavior analysis of networked rigid bodies. In particular, global synchronization is achieved with our analysis method regardless of the highly nonlinear and strongly coupling problems resulting from multiplicative quaternion errors, which seriously hinder the traditional analysis of global synchronization for networked rigid bodies. Simulations for networked spacecraft are presented to show the global synchronization performances under different directed topologies.

Correlation between nuclear temperatures and symmetry energy in sub-saturation

A study of the correlation between nuclear temperatures and symmetry energy is presented for heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies via the isospin-dependent quantum molecular-dynamics model. It is found that different symmetry energy parameters will change the density and kinetic energy distribution of the hot nuclei. More importantly, nuclear temperatures that are based on kinetic energy properties can be used to study symmetry energy information.

DSNet: A Dual-Stream Framework for Weakly-Supervised Gigapixel Pathology Image Analysis

We present a novel weakly-supervised framework for classifying whole slide images (WSIs). WSIs, due to their gigapixel resolution, are commonly processed by patch-wise classification with patch-level labels. However, patch-level labels require precise annotations, which is expensive and usually unavailable on clinical data. With image-level labels only, patch-wise classification would be sub-optimal due to inconsistency between the patch appearance and image-level label. To address this issue, we posit that WSI analysis can be effectively conducted by integrating information at both high magnification (local) and low magnification (regional) levels. We auto-encode the visual signals in each patch into a latent embedding vector representing local information, and down-sample the raw WSI to hardware-acceptable thumbnails representing regional information. The WSI label is then predicted with a Dual-Stream Network (DSNet), which takes the transformed local patch embeddings and multi-scale thumbnail images as inputs and can be trained by the image-level label only. Experiments conducted on two large-scale public datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms all recent state-of-the-art weakly-supervised WSI classification methods.

Mixed Reality Depth Contour Occlusion Using Binocular Similarity Matching and Three-dimensional Contour Optimisation

Mixed reality applications often require virtual objects that are partly occluded by real objects. However, previous research and commercial products have limitations in terms of performance and efficiency. To address these challenges, we propose a novel depth contour occlusion (DCO) algorithm. The proposed method is based on the sensitivity of contour occlusion and a binocular stereoscopic vision device. In this method, a depth contour map is combined with a sparse depth map obtained from a two-stage adaptive filter area stereo matching algorithm and the depth contour information of the objects extracted by a digital image stabilisation optical flow method. We also propose a quadratic optimisation model with three constraints to generate an accurate dense map of the depth contour for high-quality real-virtual occlusion. The whole process is accelerated by GPU. To evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm, we demonstrate a time con-sumption statistical analysis for each stage of the DCO algorithm execution. To verify the relia-bility of the real-virtual occlusion effect, we conduct an experimental analysis on single-sided, enclosed, and complex occlusions; subsequently, we compare it with the occlusion method without quadratic optimisation. With our GPU implementation for real-time DCO, the evaluation indicates that applying the presented DCO algorithm can enhance the real-time performance and the visual quality of real-virtual occlusion.

Double Thompson Sampling in Finite stochastic Games

We consider the trade-off problem between exploration and exploitation under finite discounted Markov Decision Process, where the state transition matrix of the underlying environment stays unknown. We propose a double Thompson sampling reinforcement learning algorithm(DTS) to solve this kind of problem. This algorithm achieves a total regret bound of $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(D\sqrt{SAT})$in time horizon $T$ with $S$ states, $A$ actions and diameter $D$. DTS consists of two parts, the first part is the traditional part where we apply the posterior sampling method on transition matrix based on prior distribution. In the second part, we employ a count-based posterior update method to balance between the local optimal action and the long-term optimal action in order to find the global optimal game value. We established a regret bound of $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(\sqrt{T}/S^{2})$. Which is by far the best regret bound for finite discounted Markov Decision Process to our knowledge. Numerical results proves the efficiency and superiority of our approach.

Effects of Mesh Topology on MHD Solution Features in Coronal Simulations

Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the solar corona have become more popular with the increased availability of computational power. Modern computational plasma codes, relying upon Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods, allow for resolving the coronal features using solar surface magnetograms as inputs. These computations are carried out in a full 3D domain and thus selection of the right mesh configuration is essential to save computational resources and enable/speed up convergence. In addition, it has been observed that for MHD simulations close to the hydrostatic equilibrium, spurious numerical artefacts might appear in the solution following the mesh structure, which makes the selection of the grid also a concern for accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and trade off two main mesh topologies when applied to global solar corona simulations using the unstructured ideal MHD solver from the COOLFluiD platform. The first topology is based on the geodesic polyhedron and the second on UV mapping. Focus will be placed on aspects such as mesh adaptability, resolution distribution, resulting spurious numerical fluxes and convergence performance. For this purpose, firstly a rotating dipole case is investigated, followed by two simulations using real magnetograms from the solar minima (1995) and solar maxima (1999). It is concluded that the most appropriate mesh topology for the simulation depends on several factors, such as the accuracy requirements, the presence of features near the polar regions and/or strong features in the flow field in general. If convergence is of concern and the simulation contains strong dynamics, then grids which are based on the geodesic polyhedron are recommended compared to more conventionally used UV-mapped meshes.

A CNN-based Post-Processor for Perceptually-Optimized Immersive Media Compression

In recent years, resolution adaptation based on deep neural networks has enabled significant performance gains for conventional (2D) video codecs. This paper investigates the effectiveness of spatial resolution resampling in the context of immersive content. The proposed approach reduces the spatial resolution of input multi-view videos before encoding, and reconstructs their original resolution after decoding. During the up-sampling process, an advanced CNN model is used to reduce potential re-sampling, compression, and synthesis artifacts. This work has been fully tested with the TMIV coding standard using a Versatile Video Coding (VVC) codec. The results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a significant rate-quality performance improvement for the majority of the test sequences, with an average BD-VMAF improvement of 3.07 overall sequences.

BVI-CC: A Dataset for Research on Video Compression and Quality Assessment

The video technology scenery has been very vivid over the past years, with novel video coding technologies introduced that promise improved compression performance over state-of-the-art technologies. Despite the fact that a lot of video datasets are available, representative content of the wide parameter space along with subjective evaluations of variations of encoded content from an unpartial end is required. In response to this requirement, this paper features a dataset, the BVI-CC. Three video codecs were deployed to create the variations of the encoded sequences: High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Test Model (HM), AOMedia Video 1 (AV1), and Versatile Video Coding (VVC) Test Model (VTM). Nine source video sequences were carefully selected to offer both diversity and representativeness in the spatio-temporal domain. Different spatial resolution versions of the sequences were created and encoded by all three codecs at pre-defined target bit rates. The compression efficiency of the codecs was evaluated with commonly used objective quality metrics, and the subjective quality of their reconstructed content was also evaluated through psychophysical experiments. Additionally, an adaptive bit rate (convex hull rate-distortion optimization across spatial resolutions) test case was assessed using both objective and subjective evaluations. Finally, the computational complexities of the tested codecs were examined. All data have been made publicly available as part of the dataset, which can be used for coding performance evaluation and video quality metric development.

Work statistics across a quantum critical surface

We study the universality of work statistics of a system quenched through a quantum critical surface. By using the adiabatic perturbation theory, we obtain the general scaling behavior for all cumulants of work. These results extend the studies of Kibble-Zurek mechanism scaling of work statistics from an isolated quantum critical point to a critical surface. As an example, we study the scaling behavior of work statistics in the two-dimensional (2D) Kitaev honeycomb model featured with a critical line. By utilizing the trace formula for quadratic fermionic Hamiltonian, we obtain the exact characteristic function of work of the 2D Kitaev model at zero temperature. The results confirm our prediction.
