City-Scale Multi-Camera Vehicle Tracking Guided by Crossroad Zones

Multi-Target Multi-Camera Tracking has a wide range of applications and is the basis for many advanced inferences and predictions. This paper describes our solution to the Track 3 multi-camera vehicle tracking task in 2021 AI City Challenge (AICITY21). This paper proposes a multi-target multi-camera vehicle tracking framework guided by the crossroad zones. The framework includes: (1) Use mature detection and vehicle re-identification models to extract targets and appearance features. (2) Use modified JDETracker (without detection module) to track single-camera vehicles and generate single-camera tracklets. (3) According to the characteristics of the crossroad, the Tracklet Filter Strategy and the Direction Based Temporal Mask are proposed. (4) Propose Sub-clustering in Adjacent Cameras for multi-camera tracklets matching. Through the above techniques, our method obtained an IDF1 score of 0.8095, ranking first on the leaderboard. The code have released: https://github.com/LCFractal/AIC21-MTMC.

TopoTxR: A Topological Biomarker for Predicting Treatment Response in Breast Cancer

Characterization of breast parenchyma on dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) is a challenging task owing to the complexity of underlying tissue structures. Current quantitative approaches, including radiomics and deep learning models, do not explicitly capture the complex and subtle parenchymal structures, such as fibroglandular tissue. In this paper, we propose a novel method to direct a neural network's attention to a dedicated set of voxels surrounding biologically relevant tissue structures. By extracting multi-dimensional topological structures with high saliency, we build a topology-derived biomarker, TopoTxR. We demonstrate the efficacy of TopoTxR in predicting response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer. Our qualitative and quantitative results suggest differential topological behavior of breast tissue on treatment-naïve imaging, in patients who respond favorably to therapy versus those who do not.

Single-pixel diffuser camera

We present a compact, diffuser-assisted, single-pixel computational camera. A rotating ground glass diffuser is adopted, in preference to a commonly used digital micro-mirror device (DMD), to encode a two-dimensional (2D) image into single-pixel signals. We retrieve images with an 8.8% sampling ratio after the calibration of the pseudo-random pattern of the diffuser under incoherent illumination. Furthermore, we demonstrate hyperspectral imaging with line array detection by adding a diffraction grating. The implementation results in a cost-effective single-pixel camera for high-dimensional imaging, with potential for imaging in non-visible wavebands.

Two-Grid Domain Decomposition Methods for the Coupled Stokes-Darcy System

In this paper, we propose two novel Robin-type domain decomposition methods based on the two-grid techniques for the coupled Stokes-Darcy system. Our schemes firstly adopt the existing Robin-type domain decomposition algorithm to obtain the coarse grid approximate solutions. Then two modified domain decomposition methods are further constructed on the fine grid by utilizing the framework of two-grid methods to enhance computational efficiency, via replacing some interface terms by the coarse grid information. The natural idea of using the two-grid frame to optimize the domain decomposition method inherits the best features of both methods and can overcome some of the domain decomposition deficits. The resulting schemes can be implemented easily using many existing mature solvers or codes in a flexible way, which are much effective under smaller mesh sizes or some realistic physical parameters. Moreover, several error estimates are carried out to show the stability and convergence of the schemes. Finally, three numerical experiments are performed and compared with the classical two-grid method, which verifies the validation and efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

Reduced model for capillary breakup with thermal gradients: Predictions and computational validation

It was recently demonstrated that feeding a silicon-in-silica coaxial fibre into a flame$\mathord{-}$imparting a steep silica viscosity gradient$\mathord{-}$results in the formation of silicon spheres whose size is controlled by the feed speed [Gumennik et al., Nat.Commun. 4, 2216 (2013)]. A reduced model to predict the droplet size from the feed speed was then derived by Mowlavi et al. [Phys. Rev. Fluids. 4, 064003 (2019)], but large experimental uncertainties in the parameter values and temperature profile made quantitative validation of the model impossible. Here, we validate the reduced model against fully-resolved three-dimensional axisymmetric Stokes simulations using the exact same physical parameters and temperature profile. We obtain excellent quantitative agreement for a wide range of experimentally relevant feed speeds. Surprisingly, we also observe that the local capillary number at the breakup location remains almost constant across all feed speeds. Owing to its low computational cost, the reduced model is therefore a useful tool for designing future experiments.

Augmented Transformer with Adaptive Graph for Temporal Action Proposal Generation

Temporal action proposal generation (TAPG) is a fundamental and challenging task in video understanding, especially in temporal action detection. Most previous works focus on capturing the local temporal context and can well locate simple action instances with clean frames and clear boundaries. However, they generally fail in complicated scenarios where interested actions involve irrelevant frames and background clutters, and the local temporal context becomes less effective. To deal with these problems, we present an augmented transformer with adaptive graph network (ATAG) to exploit both long-range and local temporal contexts for TAPG. Specifically, we enhance the vanilla transformer by equipping a snippet actionness loss and a front block, dubbed augmented transformer, and it improves the abilities of capturing long-range dependencies and learning robust feature for noisy action instances. Moreover, an adaptive graph convolutional network (GCN) is proposed to build local temporal context by mining the position information and difference between adjacent features. The features from the two modules carry rich semantic information of the video, and are fused for effective sequential proposal generation. Extensive experiments are conducted on two challenging datasets, THUMOS14 and ActivityNet1.3, and the results demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art TAPG methods. Our code will be released soon.

TransReID: Transformer-based Object Re-Identification

Extracting robust feature representation is one of the key challenges in object re-identification (ReID). Although convolution neural network (CNN)-based methods have achieved great success, they only process one local neighborhood at a time and suffer from information loss on details caused by convolution and downsampling operators (e.g. pooling and strided convolution). To overcome these limitations, we propose a pure transformer-based object ReID framework named TransReID. Specifically, we first encode an image as a sequence of patches and build a transformer-based strong baseline with a few critical improvements, which achieves competitive results on several ReID benchmarks with CNN-based methods. To further enhance the robust feature learning in the context of transformers, two novel modules are carefully designed. (i) The jigsaw patch module (JPM) is proposed to rearrange the patch embeddings via shift and patch shuffle operations which generates robust features with improved discrimination ability and more diversified coverage. (ii) The side information embeddings (SIE) is introduced to mitigate feature bias towards camera/view variations by plugging in learnable embeddings to incorporate these non-visual clues. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to adopt a pure transformer for ReID research. Experimental results of TransReID are superior promising, which achieve state-of-the-art performance on both person and vehicle ReID benchmarks.

Proactive Interaction Framework for Intelligent Social Receptionist Robots

Proactive human-robot interaction (HRI) allows the receptionist robots to actively greet people and offer services based on vision, which has been found to improve acceptability and customer satisfaction. Existing approaches are either based on multi-stage decision processes or based on end-to-end decision models. However, the rule-based approaches require sedulous expert efforts and only handle minimal pre-defined scenarios. On the other hand, existing works with end-to-end models are limited to very general greetings or few behavior patterns (typically less than 10). To address those challenges, we propose a new end-to-end framework, the TransFormer with Visual Tokens for Human-Robot Interaction (TFVT-HRI). The proposed framework extracts visual tokens of relative objects from an RGB camera first. To ensure the correct interpretation of the scenario, a transformer decision model is then employed to process the visual tokens, which is augmented with the temporal and spatial information. It predicts the appropriate action to take in each scenario and identifies the right target. Our data is collected from an in-service receptionist robot in an office building, which is then annotated by experts for appropriate proactive behavior. The action set includes 1000+ diverse patterns by combining language, emoji expression, and body motions. We compare our model with other SOTA end-to-end models on both offline test sets and online user experiments in realistic office building environments to validate this framework. It is demonstrated that the decision model achieves SOTA performance in action triggering and selection, resulting in more humanness and intelligence when compared with the previous reactive reception policies.

Wavelet Characterization of Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin Spaces on Spaces of Homogeneous Type and Its Applications

In this article, the authors establish the wavelet characterization of Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces on a given space $(X,d,μ)$ of homogeneous type in the sense of Coifman and Weiss. Moreover, the authors introduce almost diagonal operators on Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin sequence spaces on $X$, and obtain their boundedness. Using this wavelet characterization and this boundedness of almost diagonal operators, the authors obtain the molecular characterization of Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces. Applying this molecular characterization, the authors further establish the Littlewood--Paley characterizations of Triebel--Lizorkin spaces on $X$. The main novelty of this article is that all these results get rid of their dependence on the reverse doubling property of $μ$ and also the triangle inequality of $d$, by fully using the geometrical property of $X$ expressed via its equipped quasi-metric $d$, dyadic reference points, dyadic cubes, and wavelets

Difference Characterization of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin Spaces on Spaces of Homogeneous Type

In this article, the authors introduce the spaces of Lipschitz type on spaces of homogeneous type in the sense of Coifman and Weiss, and discuss their relations with Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. As an application, the authors establish the difference characterization of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on spaces of homogeneous type. A major novelty of this article is that all results presented in this article get rid of the dependence on the reverse doubling assumption of the considered measure of the underlying space ${\mathcal X}$ via using the geometrical property of ${\mathcal X}$ expressed by its dyadic reference points, dyadic cubes, and the (local) lower bound. Moreover, some results when $p\le 1$ but near to $1$ are new even when ${\mathcal X}$ is an RD-space.

Electron-Ion Collider in China

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

Intelligent Electric Vehicle Charging Recommendation Based on Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

Electric Vehicle (EV) has become a preferable choice in the modern transportation system due to its environmental and energy sustainability. However, in many large cities, EV drivers often fail to find the proper spots for charging, because of the limited charging infrastructures and the spatiotemporally unbalanced charging demands. Indeed, the recent emergence of deep reinforcement learning provides great potential to improve the charging experience from various aspects over a long-term horizon. In this paper, we propose a framework, named Multi-Agent Spatio-Temporal Reinforcement Learning (Master), for intelligently recommending public accessible charging stations by jointly considering various long-term spatiotemporal factors. Specifically, by regarding each charging station as an individual agent, we formulate this problem as a multi-objective multi-agent reinforcement learning task. We first develop a multi-agent actor-critic framework with the centralized attentive critic to coordinate the recommendation between geo-distributed agents. Moreover, to quantify the influence of future potential charging competition, we introduce a delayed access strategy to exploit the knowledge of future charging competition during training. After that, to effectively optimize multiple learning objectives, we extend the centralized attentive critic to multi-critics and develop a dynamic gradient re-weighting strategy to adaptively guide the optimization direction. Finally, extensive experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate that Master achieves the best comprehensive performance compared with nine baseline approaches.

Learning to Select External Knowledge with Multi-Scale Negative Sampling

The Track-1 of DSTC9 aims to effectively answer user requests or questions during task-oriented dialogues, which are out of the scope of APIs/DB. By leveraging external knowledge resources, relevant information can be retrieved and encoded into the response generation for these out-of-API-coverage queries. In this work, we have explored several advanced techniques to enhance the utilization of external knowledge and boost the quality of response generation, including schema guided knowledge decision, negatives enhanced knowledge selection, and knowledge grounded response generation. To evaluate the performance of our proposed method, comprehensive experiments have been carried out on the publicly available dataset. Our approach was ranked as the best in human evaluation of DSTC9 Track-1.

1st Place Solution to ECCV-TAO-2020: Detect and Represent Any Object for Tracking

We extend the classical tracking-by-detection paradigm to this tracking-any-object task. Solid detection results are first extracted from TAO dataset. Some state-of-the-art techniques like \textbf{BA}lanced-\textbf{G}roup \textbf{S}oftmax (\textbf{BAGS}\cite{li2020overcoming}) and DetectoRS\cite{qiao2020detectors} are integrated during detection. Then we learned appearance features to represent any object by training feature learning networks. We ensemble several models for improving detection and feature representation. Simple linking strategies with most similar appearance features and tracklet-level post association module are finally applied to generate final tracking results. Our method is submitted as \textbf{AOA} on the challenge website. Code is available at https://github.com/feiaxyt/Winner_ECCV20_TAO.

Multiplexed structured illumination super-resolution imaging with time-domain upconversion nanoparticles

The emerging optical multiplexing within nanoscale shows super-capacity in encoding information by using the time-domain fingerprints from uniform nanoparticles. However, the optical diffraction limit compromises the decoding throughput and accuracy of the nanoparticles during wide-field imaging. This, in turn, challenges the quality of nanoparticles to afford the modulated excitation condition, and further to retain the multiplexed optical fingerprints for super-resolution multiplexing. Here we report a tailor-made time-domain super-resolution method with the lifetime-engineered upconversion nanoparticles for multiplexing. We demonstrate that the nanoparticles are bright, uniform, and stable under structured illumination, which supports a lateral resolution of 186 nm, less than 1/4th of the excitation wavelength. We further develop a deep learning algorithm to coordinate with super-resolution images for more accurate decoding compared to a numeric algorithm. We demonstrate a three-channel sub-diffraction-limit imaging-based optical multiplexing with decoding accuracies above 93% for each channel, and larger than 60% accuracies for potential seven-channel multiplexing. The improved resolution provides high throughput by resolving the particles within the optical limit, which enables higher multiplexing capacity in space. This time-domain super-resolution multiplexing opens a new horizon for handling the growing amount of information content, diseases source, and security risk in modern society

Multi-object Tracking with a Hierarchical Single-branch Network

Recent Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) methods have gradually attempted to integrate object detection and instance re-identification (Re-ID) into a united network to form a one-stage solution. Typically, these methods use two separated branches within a single network to accomplish detection and Re-ID respectively without studying the inter-relationship between them, which inevitably impedes the tracking performance. In this paper, we propose an online multi-object tracking framework based on a hierarchical single-branch network to solve this problem. Specifically, the proposed single-branch network utilizes an improved Hierarchical Online In-stance Matching (iHOIM) loss to explicitly model the inter-relationship between object detection and Re-ID. Our novel iHOIM loss function unifies the objectives of the two sub-tasks and encourages better detection performance and feature learning even in extremely crowded scenes. Moreover, we propose to introduce the object positions, predicted by a motion model, as region proposals for subsequent object detection, where the intuition is that detection results and motion predictions can complement each other in different scenarios. Experimental results on MOT16 and MOT20 datasets show that we can achieve state-of-the-art tracking performance, and the ablation study verifies the effectiveness of each proposed component.

1st Place Solution to VisDA-2020: Bias Elimination for Domain Adaptive Pedestrian Re-identification

This paper presents our proposed methods for domain adaptive pedestrian re-identification (Re-ID) task in Visual Domain Adaptation Challenge (VisDA-2020). Considering the large gap between the source domain and target domain, we focused on solving two biases that influenced the performance on domain adaptive pedestrian Re-ID and proposed a two-stage training procedure. At the first stage, a baseline model is trained with images transferred from source domain to target domain and from single camera to multiple camera styles. Then we introduced a domain adaptation framework to train the model on source data and target data simultaneously. Different pseudo label generation strategies are adopted to continuously improve the discriminative ability of the model. Finally, with multiple models ensembled and additional post processing approaches adopted, our methods achieve 76.56% mAP and 84.25% rank-1 on the test set.
