Mirroring the Past: Exploring How Ancestral Digital Self Influences History Learning

Learners often perceive history as distant from themselves, which limits immersion and empathy in history learning. To bridge this gap, we introduce the "Ancestral Digital Self," an AI-generated pedagogical agent presented in prerecorded videos that mirrors the learner's facial features and vocal timbre, representing a historically situated version of the self. We developed a reproducible workflow for creating AI-generated historical learning videos and conducted a within-subjects study (N=36) comparing a Digital Self agent with a non-self pedagogical agent. The Digital Self agent enhanced experiential measures, including narrative transportation, perceived relatedness, self-other inclusion, and agent perception. However, it did not improve immediate learning outcomes: quiz scores were lower in the Digital Self condition, and Remember/Know judgments showed no reliable differences. Interviews further suggested that self-similarity increased familiarity and motivation, while novelty and uncanniness could draw attention away from historical content. These findings offer design implications for future educational environments supported by pedagogical agents.

Boundary Difference Over Union Loss For Medical Image Segmentation

Medical image segmentation is crucial for clinical diagnosis. However, current losses for medical image segmentation mainly focus on overall segmentation results, with fewer losses proposed to guide boundary segmentation. Those that do exist often need to be used in combination with other losses and produce ineffective results. To address this issue, we have developed a simple and effective loss called the Boundary Difference over Union Loss (Boundary DoU Loss) to guide boundary region segmentation. It is obtained by calculating the ratio of the difference set of prediction and ground truth to the union of the difference set and the partial intersection set. Our loss only relies on region calculation, making it easy to implement and training stable without needing any additional losses. Additionally, we use the target size to adaptively adjust attention applied to the boundary regions. Experimental results using UNet, TransUNet, and Swin-UNet on two datasets (ACDC and Synapse) demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed loss function. Bone tumor suppression in rabbits by hyperthermia below the clinical safety limit using aligned magnetic bone cement

Demonstrating highly efficient alternating current (AC) magnetic field heating of nanoparticles in physiological environments under clinically safe field parameters has remained a great challenge, hindering clinical applications of magnetic hyperthermia. In this work, we report exceptionally high loss power of magnetic bone cement under clinical safety limit of AC field parameters, incorporating DC field-aligned soft magnetic Zn0.3Fe2.7O4 nanoparticles with low concentration. Under an AC field of 4 kA/m at 430 kHz, the aligned bone cement with 0.2 wt% nanoparticles achieved a temperature increase of 30 C in 180 s. This amounts to a specific loss power value of 327 W/gmetal and an intrinsic loss power of 47 nHm^2/kg, which is enhanced by 50-fold compared to randomly oriented samples. The high-performance magnetic bone cement allows for the demonstration of effective hyperthermia suppression of tumor growth in the bone marrow cavity of New Zealand White Rabbits subjecting to rapid cooling due to blood circulation, and significant enhancement of survival rate.

Accommodation mechanisms in strain-transformable titanium alloys

A new $\beta$-metastable Ti-alloy is designed with the aim to obtain a TWIP alloy but positioned at the limit between the TRIP/TWIP and the TWIP dominated regime. The designed alloy exhibits a large ductility combined with an elevated and stable work-hardening rate. Deformation occurring by formation and multiplication of {332}<113> twins is evidenced and followed by in-situ electron microscopy, and no primary stress induced martensite is observed. Since microstructural investigations of the deformation mechanisms show a highly heterogeneous deformation, the reason of the large ductility is then investigated. The spatial strain distribution is characterized by micro-scale digital image correlation, and the regions highly deformed are found to stand at the crossover between twins, or at the intersection between deformation twins and grain boundaries. Detailed electron back-scattered imaging in such regions of interest finally allowed to evidence the formation of thin needles of stress induced martensite. The latter is thus interpreted as an accommodation mechanism, relaxing the local high strain fields, which ensures a large and stable plastic deformation of this newly designed Ti-alloy.

Covalent 2D Cr$_2$Te$_3$ ferromagnet

To broaden the scope of van der Waals 2D magnets, we report the synthesis and magnetism of covalent 2D magnetic Cr$_2$Te$_3$ with a thickness down to one-unit-cell. The 2D Cr$_2$Te$_3$ crystals exhibit robust ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature of 180 K, a large perpendicular anisotropy of 7*105 J m-3, and a high coercivity of ~ 4.6 kG at 20 K. First-principles calculations further show a transition from canted to collinear ferromagnetism, a transition from perpendicular to in-plane anisotropy, and emergent half-metallic behavior in atomically-thin Cr$_2$Te$_3$, suggesting its potential application for injecting carriers with high spin polarization into spintronic devices.

Capturing Nucleation at 4D Atomic Resolution

Nucleation plays a critical role in many physical and biological phenomena ranging from crystallization, melting and evaporation to the formation of clouds and the initiation of neurodegenerative diseases. However, nucleation is a challenging process to study in experiments especially in the early stage when several atoms/molecules start to form a new phase from its parent phase. Here, we advance atomic electron tomography to study early stage nucleation at 4D atomic resolution. Using FePt nanoparticles as a model system, we reveal that early stage nuclei are irregularly shaped, each has a core of one to few atoms with the maximum order parameter, and the order parameter gradient points from the core to the boundary of the nucleus. We capture the structure and dynamics of the same nuclei undergoing growth, fluctuation, dissolution, merging and/or division, which are regulated by the order parameter distribution and its gradient. These experimental observations differ from classical nucleation theory (CNT) and to explain them we propose the order parameter gradient (OPG) model. We show the OPG model generalizes CNT and energetically favours diffuse interfaces for small nuclei and sharp interfaces for large nuclei. We further corroborate this model using molecular dynamics simulations of heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation in liquid-solid phase transitions of Pt. We anticipate that the OPG model is applicable to different nucleation processes and our experimental method opens the door to study the structure and dynamics of materials with 4D atomic resolution.

Maximizing Specific Loss Power for Magnetic Hyperthermia by Hard-Soft Mixed Ferrites

We report maximized specific loss power and intrinsic loss power approaching theoretical limits for AC magnetic field heating of nanoparticles. This is achieved by engineering the effective magnetic anisotropy barrier of nanoparticles via alloying of hard and soft ferrites. 22 nm Co0.03Mn0.28Fe2.7O4/SiO2 NPs reached a specific loss power value of 3417 W/gmetal at a field of 33 kA/m and 380 kHz. Biocompatible Zn0.3Fe2.7O4/SiO2 nanoparticles achieved specific loss power of 500 W/gmetal and intrinsic loss power of 26.8 nHm2/kg at field parameters of 7 kA/m and 380 kHz, below the clinical safety limit. Magnetic bone cement achieved heating adequate for bone tumor hyperthermia, incorporating ultralow dosage of just 1 wt% of nanoparticles. In cellular hyperthermia experiments, these nanoparticles demonstrated high cell death rate at low field parameters. Zn0.3Fe2.7O4/SiO2 nanoparticles show cell viabilities above 97% at concentrations up to 0.5 mg/ml within 48 hrs, suggesting toxicity lower than that of magnetite.

Chalcogenide Perovskites- an Emerging Class of Ionic Semiconductors

We report the synthesis and characterization of a novel class of ionic semiconductor materials- inorganic chalcogenide perovskites. Several different compounds including BaZrS3, CaZrS3, SrTiS3 and SrZrS3 were synthesized by high temperature sulfurization of their oxide counterparts. Their crystal structures were identified by XRD and composition by EDX. UV-vis and photoluminescence measurements confirmed that they are direct gap semiconductors with band gap values consistent with theoretical predictions. By adopting an anion alloying approach, we demonstrate widely tunable band gap from 1.73 eV to 2.87 eV. These strongly ionic semiconductors provide a new avenue for engineering the semiconducting properties for applications such as energy harvesting, solid state lighting and sensing.

Enhanced valley splitting in monolayer WSe2 due to magnetic exchange field

Exploiting the valley degree of freedom to store and manipulate information provides a novel paradigm for future electronics. A monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) with broken inversion symmetry possesses two degenerate yet inequivalent valleys, offering unique opportunities for valley control through helicity of light. Lifting the valley degeneracy by Zeeman splitting has been demonstrated recently, which may enable valley control by a magnetic field. However, the realized valley splitting is modest, (~ 0.2 meV/T). Here we show greatly enhanced valley spitting in monolayer WSe2, utilizing the interfacial magnetic exchange field (MEF) from a ferromagnetic EuS substrate. A valley splitting of 2.5 meV is demonstrated at 1 T by magneto-reflectance measurements. Moreover, the splitting follows the magnetization of EuS, a hallmark of the MEF. Utilizing MEF of a magnetic insulator can induce magnetic order, and valley and spin polarization in TMDCs, which may enable valleytronic and quantum computing applications.

Deciphering chemical order/disorder and material properties at the single-atom level

Correlating 3D arrangements of atoms and defects with material properties and functionality forms the core of several scientific disciplines. Here, we determined the 3D coordinates of 6,569 iron and 16,627 platinum atoms in a model iron-platinum nanoparticle system to correlate 3D atomic arrangements and chemical order/disorder with material properties at the single-atom level. We identified rich structural variety and chemical order/disorder including 3D atomic composition, grain boundaries, anti-phase boundaries, anti-site point defects and swap defects. We show for the first time that experimentally measured 3D atomic coordinates and chemical species with 22 pm precision can be used as direct input for first-principles calculations of material properties such as atomic magnetic moments and local magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This work not only opens the door to determining 3D atomic arrangements and chemical order/disorder of a wide range of nanostructured materials with high precision, but also will transform our understanding of structure-property relationships at the most fundamental level.

Transmission Schemes for Four-Way Relaying in Wireless Cellular Systems

Two-way relaying in wireless systems has initiated a large research effort during the past few years. While one-way relay with a single data flow introduces loss in spectral efficiency due to its half-duplex operation, two-way relaying based on wireless network coding regains part of this loss by simultaneously processing the two data flows. In a broader perspective, the two-way traffic pattern is rather limited and it is of interest to investigate other traffic patterns where such a simultaneous processing of information flows can bring performance advantage. In this paper we consider a scenario beyond the usual two-way relaying: a four-way relaying, where each of the two Mobile Stations (MSs) has a two-way connection to the same Base Station (BS), while each connection is through a dedicated Relay Station (RS). While both RSs are in the range of the same BS, they are assumed to have antipodal positions within the cell, such that they do not interfere with each other. We introduce and analyze a two-phase transmission scheme to serve the four-way traffic pattern defined in this scenario. Each phase consists of combined broadcast and multiple access. We analyze the achievable rate region of the new schemes for two different operational models for the RS, Decode-and-Forward (DF) and Amplify-and-Forward (AF), respectively. We compare the performance with a state-of-the-art reference scheme, time sharing is used between the two MSs, while each MS is served through a two-way relaying scheme. The results indicate that, when the RS operates in a DF mode, the achievable rate regions are significantly enlarged. On the other hand, for AF relaying, the gains are rather modest. The practical implication of the presented work is a novel insight on how to improve the spatial reuse in wireless cellular networks by coordinating the transmissions of the antipodal relays.
