Fast Ray-Tracing-Based Precise Underwater Acoustic Localization without Prior Acknowledgment of Target Depth

Underwater localization is of great importance for marine observation and building positioning, navigation, timing (PNT) systems that could be widely applied in disaster warning, underwater rescues and resources exploration. The uneven distribution of underwater sound velocity poses great challenge for precise underwater positioning. The current soundline correction positioning method mainly aims at scenarios with known target depth. However, for nodes that are non-cooperative nodes or lack of depth information, soundline tracking strategies cannot work well due to nonunique positional solutions. To tackle this issue, we propose an iterative ray tracing 3D underwater localization (IRTUL) method for stratification compensation. To demonstrate the feasibility of fast stratification compensation, we first derive the signal path as a function of glancing angle, and then prove that the signal propagation time and horizontal propagation distance are monotonic functions of the initial grazing angle, so that fast ray tracing can be achieved. Then, we propose an sound velocity profile (SVP) simplification method, which reduces the computational cost of ray tracing. Experimental results show that the IRTUL has the most significant distance correction in the depth direction, and the average accuracy of IRTUL has been improved by about 3 meters compared to localization model with constant sound velocity. Also, the simplified SVP can significantly improve real-time performance with average accuracy loss less than 0.2 m when used for positioning.

Underwater Sound Speed Profile Construction: A Review

Real--time and accurate construction of regional sound speed profiles (SSP) is important for building underwater positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) systems as it greatly affect the signal propagation modes such as trajectory. In this paper, we summarizes and analyzes the current research status in the field of underwater SSP construction, and the mainstream methods include direct SSP measurement and SSP inversion. In the direct measurement method, we compare the performance of popular international commercial temperature, conductivity, and depth profilers (CTD). While for the inversion methods, the framework and basic principles of matched field processing (MFP), compressive sensing (CS), and deep learning (DL) for constructing SSP are introduced, and their advantages and disadvantages are compared. The traditional direct measurement method has good accuracy performance, but it usually takes a long time. The proposal of SSP inversion method greatly improves the convenience and real--time performance, but the accuracy is not as good as the direct measurement method. Currently, the SSP inversion relies on sonar observation data, making it difficult to apply to areas that couldn't be covered by underwater observation systems, and these methods are unable to predict the distribution of sound velocity at future times. How to comprehensively utilize multi-source data and provide elastic sound velocity distribution estimation services with different accuracy and real-time requirements for underwater users without sonar observation data is the mainstream trend in future research on SSP construction.

Nuclear $β$ spectrum from projected shell model (I): allowed one-to-one transition

Nuclear $β$ spectrum and the corresponding (anti-)neutrino spectrum play important roles in many aspects of nuclear astrophysics, particle physics, nuclear industry and nuclear data. In this work we propose a projected shell model (PSM) to calculate the level energies as well as the reduced one-body transition density (ROBTD) by the Pfaffian algorithm for nuclear $β$ decays. The calculated level energies and ROBTD are inputed to the Beta Spectrum Generator (BSG) code to study the high precision $β$ spectrum of allowed one-to-one transitions. When experimental level energies are adopted, the calculated $β$ spectrum by ROBTD of the PSM deviates from the one by the extreme simple particle evaluation of the BSG by up to $10\%$, reflecting the importance of nuclear many-body correlations. When calculated level energies are adopted, the calculated $β$ spectrum shows sensitive dependence on the reliability of calculated level energies. The developed method for ROBTD by the PSM will also be useful for study of the first-forbidden transitions, the isovector spin monopole resonance etc. in a straightforward way.

Quasi-admissible, raisable nilpotent orbits, and theta representations

We study the quasi-admissibility and raisablility of some nilpotent orbits of a covering group. In particular, we determine the degree of the cover such that a given split nilpotent orbit is quasi-admissible and non-raisable. The speculated wavefront sets of theta representations are also computed explicitly, and are shown to be quasi-admissible and non-raisable. Lastly, we determine the leading coefficients in the Harish-Chandra character expansion of theta representations of covers of the general linear groups.

Formal degrees of genuine Iwahori-spherical representations

For square-integrable genuine Iwahori-spherical representations of central covers, we verify the Hiraga--Ichino--Ikeda formula for their formal degrees. We also compute the Whittaker dimensions of these representations, when their associated modules over the genuine Iwahori--Hecke algebra are one-dimensional.

Gelfand--Graev functor and quantum affine Schur--Weyl duality

We explicate relations among the Gelfand--Graev modules for central covers, the Euler--Poincaré polynomial of the Arnold--Brieskorn manifold, and the quantum affine Schur--Weyl duality. These three objects and their relations are dictated by a permutation representation of the Weyl group. Specifically, our main result shows that for certain covers of $\mathrm{GL}(r)$ the Gelfand--Graev functor is related to quantum affine Schur--Weyl duality. Consequently, the commuting algebra of the Iwahori-fixed part of the Gelfand--Graev representation is the quotient of a quantum group.

Quantum corrections to the magnetoconductivity of surface states in three-dimensional topological insulators

The interplay between quantum interference, electron-electron interaction (EEI), and disorder is one of the central themes of condensed matter physics. Such interplay can cause high-order magnetoconductance (MC) corrections in semiconductors with weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, it remains unexplored how the magnetotransport properties are modified by the high-order quantum corrections in the electron systems of symplectic symmetry class, which include topological insulators (TIs), Weyl semimetals, graphene with negligible intervalley scattering, and semiconductors with strong SOC. Here, we extend the theory of quantum conductance corrections to two-dimensional electron systems with the symplectic symmetry, and study experimentally such physics with dual-gated TI devices in which the transport is dominated by highly tunable surface states. We find that the MC can be enhanced significantly by the second-order interference and the EEI effects, in contrast to suppression of MC for the systems with orthogonal symmetry. Our work reveals that detailed MC analysis can provide deep insights into the complex electronic processes in TIs, such as the screening and dephasing effects of localized charge puddles, as well as the related particle-hole asymmetry.

An effective and efficient algorithm for the Wigner rotation matrix at high angular momenta

The Wigner rotation matrix ($d$-function), which appears as a part of the angular-momentum-projection operator, plays a crucial role in modern nuclear-structure models. However, it is a long-standing problem that its numerical evaluation suffers from serious errors and instability, which hinders precise calculations for nuclear high-spin states. Recently, Tajima [Phys. Rev. C 91, 014320 (2015)] has made a significant step toward solving the problem by suggesting the high-precision Fourier method, which however relies on formula-manipulation softwares. In this paper we propose an effective and efficient algorithm for the Wigner $d$ function based on the Jacobi polynomials. We compare our method with the conventional Wigner method and the Tajima Fourier method through some testing calculations, and demonstrate that our algorithm can always give stable results with similar high-precision as the Fourier method, and in some cases (for special sets of $j, m, k$ and $θ$) ours are even more accurate. Moreover, our method is self-contained and less memory consuming. A related testing code and subroutines are provided as Supplemental Material in the present paper.

Genuine pro-$p$ Iwahori--Hecke algebras, Gelfand--Graev representations, and some applications

We study the Iwahori-component of the Gelfand-Graev representation of a central cover of a split linear reductive group and utilize our results for three applications. In fact, it is advantageous to begin at the pro-$p$ level. Thus to begin we study the structure of a genuine pro-$p$ Iwahori-Hecke algebra, establishing Iwahori-Matsumoto and Bernstein presentations. With this structure theory we first describe the pro-$p$ part of the Gelfand-Graev representation and then the more subtle Iwahori part. For the first application we relate the Gelfand-Graev representation to the metaplectic representation of Sahi-Stokman-Venkateswaran, which conceptually realizes the Chinta-Gunnells action from the theory of Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series. For the second we compute the Whittaker dimension of the constituents of regular unramified principal series; for the third we do the same for unitary unramified principal series.

Influence of Device Geometry on Transport Properties of Topological Insulator Microflakes

In the transport studies of topological insulators, microflakes exfoliated from bulk single crystals are often used because of the convenience in sample preparation and the accessibility to high carrier mobilities. Here, based on finite element analysis, we show that for the non-Hall-bar shaped topological insulator samples, the measured four-point resistances can be substantially modified by the sample geometry, bulk and surface resistivities, and magnetic field. Geometry correction factors must be introduced for accurately converting the four-point resistances to the longitudinal resistivity and Hall resistivity. The magnetic field dependence of inhomogeneous current density distribution can lead to pronounced positive magnetoresistance and nonlinear Hall effect that would not exist in the samples of ideal Hall bar geometry.

Fast Contextual Adaptation with Neural Associative Memory for On-Device Personalized Speech Recognition

Fast contextual adaptation has shown to be effective in improving Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) of rare words and when combined with an on-device personalized training, it can yield an even better recognition result. However, the traditional re-scoring approaches based on an external language model is prone to diverge during the personalized training. In this work, we introduce a model-based end-to-end contextual adaptation approach that is decoder-agnostic and amenable to on-device personalization. Our on-device simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the traditional re-scoring technique by 12% relative WER and 15.7% entity mention specific F1-score in a continues personalization scenario.

Restrictions, L-parameters, and local coefficients for genuine representations

We consider the restriction and induction of representations between a covering group and its derived subgroup, both on the representation-theoretic side and the L-parameter side. In particular, restriction of a genuine principal series is analyzed in detail. We also discuss a metaplectic tensor product construction for covers of the symplectic similitudes groups, and remark on the generality of such a construction for other groups. Furthermore, working with an arbitrary irreducible constituent of a unitary unramified principal series, we prove a multiplicity formula for its restriction to the derived subgroup in terms of three associated R-groups. Later in the paper, we study an unramified L-packet on how the parametrization of elements inside such a packet varies along with different choices of hyperspecial maximal compact subgroups and their splittings. We also investigate the genericity of elements inside such an L-packet with respect to varying Whittaker datum. Pertaining to the above two problems, covers of the symplectic similitudes groups are discussed in detail in the last part of the paper.

On the wavefront sets associated with theta representations

We study a conjectural formula for the maximal elements in the wavefront set associated with a theta representation of a covering group over $p$-adic fields. In particular, it is shown that the formula agrees with the existing work in the literature for various families of groups. We also recapitulate the results of an analogous formula in the archimedean case, which motivated the conjectural formula in the $p$-adic setting.

DCMD: Distance-based Classification Using Mixture Distributions on Microbiome Data

Current advances in next generation sequencing techniques have allowed researchers to conduct comprehensive research on microbiome and human diseases, with recent studies identifying associations between human microbiome and health outcomes for a number of chronic conditions. However, microbiome data structure, characterized by sparsity and skewness, presents challenges to building effective classifiers. To address this, we present an innovative approach for distance-based classification using mixture distributions (DCMD). The method aims to improve classification performance when using microbiome community data, where the predictors are composed of sparse and heterogeneous count data. This approach models the inherent uncertainty in sparse counts by estimating a mixture distribution for the sample data, and representing each observation as a distribution, conditional on observed counts and the estimated mixture, which are then used as inputs for distance-based classification. The method is implemented into a k-means and k-nearest neighbours framework and we identify two distance metrics that produce optimal results. The performance of the model is assessed using simulations and applied to a human microbiome study, with results compared against a number of existing machine learning and distance-based approaches. The proposed method is competitive when compared to the machine learning approaches and showed a clear improvement over commonly used distance-based classifiers. The range of applicability and robustness make the proposed method a viable alternative for classification using sparse microbiome count data.

Spin selectivity through chiral polyalanine monolayers on semiconductors

Electrical generation of polarized spins in nonmagnetic materials is of great interest for the underlying physics and device potential. One such mechanism is chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS), with which structural chirality leads to different electric conductivities for electrons of opposite spins. The resulting effect of spin filtering has been reported for a number of chiral molecules. However, the microscopic mechanism and manifestation of CISS in practical device structures remain controversial; in particular, the Onsager relation is understood to preclude linear-response detection of CISS by a ferromagnet. Here, we report direct evidence of CISS in two-terminal devices of chiral molecules on the magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As: In vertical heterojunctions of (Ga,Mn)As/AHPA-L molecules/Au, we observed characteristic linear- and nonlinear-response magnetoconductance, which directly verifies spin filtering by the AHPA-L molecules and spin detection by the (Ga,Mn)As. The results constitute definitive signature of CISS-induced spin valve effect, a core spintronic functionality, in apparent violation of the Onsager reciprocity. The results present a promising route to semiconductor spintronics free of any magnetic material.

R-group and Whittaker space of some genuine representations

For a unitary unramified genuine principal series representation of a covering group, we study the associated R-group. We prove a formula relating the R-group to the dimension of the Whittaker space for the irreducible constituents of such a principal series representation. Moreover, for saturated covers of a semisimple simply-connected group, we also propose a simpler conjectural formula for such dimensions. This latter conjectural formula is verified in several cases, including covers of the symplectic groups.

Local coefficients and gamma factors for principal series of covering groups

We consider an $n$-fold Brylinski-Deligne cover of a reductive group over a $p$-adic field. Since the space of Whittaker functionals of an irreducible genuine representation of such a cover is not one-dimensional, one can consider a local coefficients matrix arising from an intertwining operator, which is the natural analogue of the local coefficients in the linear case. In this paper, we concentrate on genuine principal series and establish some fundamental properties of such a local coefficients matrix, including the investigation of its arithmetic invariants. As a consequence, we prove a form of the Casselman-Shalika formula which could be viewed as a natural analogue for linear algebraic groups. We also investigate in some depth the behaviour of the local coefficients matrix with respect to the restriction of genuine principal series from covers of ${\rm GL}_2$ to ${\rm SL}_2$. In particular, some further relations are unveiled between local coefficients matrices and gamma factors or metaplectic-gamma factors.

Kazhdan-Lusztig representations and Whittaker space of some genuine representations

We prove a formula for the dimension of Whittaker functionals of irreducible constituents of a regular unramified genuine principal series for covering groups. The formula explicitly relates such dimension to the Kazhdan-Lusztig representations associated with certain right cells of the Weyl group. We also state a refined version of the formula, which is proved under some natural assumption. The refined formula is also verified unconditionally in several important cases.
