On trilinear and quadrilinear equations associated with the lattice Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy

Introduced in 2012, by Zhang, Zhao, and Nijhoff, the trilinear Boussinesq equation is the natural form of the equation for the $\tau$-function of the lattice Boussinesq system. In this paper we study various aspects of this equation: its highly nontrivial derivation from the bilinear lattice AKP equation under dimensional reduction, a quadrilinear dual lattice equation, conservation laws, and periodic reductions leading to higher-dimensional integrable maps and their Laurent property. Furthermore, we consider a higher Gel'fand-Dikii lattice system, its periodic reductions and Laurent property. As a special application, from both a trilinear Boussinesq recurrence as well as a higher Gel'fand-Dikii system of three bilinear recurrences, we establish Somos-like integer sequences.

On the Lagrangian multiform structure of the extended lattice Boussinesq system

The lattice Boussinesq (lBSQ) equation is a member of the lattice Gel'fand-Dikii (lGD) hierarchy, introduced in \cite{NijPapCapQui1992}, which is an infinite family of integrable systems of partial difference equations labelled by an integer $N$, where $N=2$ represents the lattice Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) system, and $N=3$ the Boussinesq system. In \cite{Hiet2011} it was shown that, written as three-component system, the lBSQ system allows for extra parameters which essentially amounts to building the lattice KdV inside the lBSQ. In this paper we show that, on the level of the Lagrangian structure, this boils down to a linear combination of Lagrangians from the members of the lGD hierarchy as was established in \cite{LobbNijGD2010}. The corresponding Lagrangian multiform structure is shown to exhibit a `double zero' structure.

Variational symmetries and Lagrangian multiforms

By considering the closure property of a Lagrangian multiform as a conservation law, we use Noether's theorem to show that every variational symmetry of a Lagrangian leads to a Lagrangian multiform. In doing so, we provide a systematic method for constructing Lagrangian multiforms for which the closure property and the multiform Euler-Lagrange (EL) equations both hold. We present three examples, including the first known example of a Lagrangian 3-form: a multiform for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. We also present a new proof of the multiform EL equations for a Lagrangian k-form for arbitrary k.

A Variational Approach to Lax Representations

It is shown that the Zakharov-Mihailov (ZM) Lagrangian structure for integrable nonlinear equations derived from a general class of Lax pairs possesses a Lagrangian multiform structure. We show that, as a consequence of this multiform structure, we can formulate a variational principle for the Lax pair itself, a problem that to our knowledge was never previously considered. As an example, we present an integrable $N\times N$ matrix system that contains the AKNS hierarchy, and we exhibit the Lagrangian multiform structure of the scalar AKNS hierarchy by presenting the components corresponding to the first three flows of the hierarchy.

On Elliptic Lax Systems on the Lattice and a Compound Theorem for Hyperdeterminants

A general elliptic $N\times N$ matrix Lax scheme is presented, leading to two classes of elliptic lattice systems, one which we interpret as the higher-rank analogue of the Landau-Lifschitz equations, while the other class we characterize as the higher-rank analogue of the lattice Krichever-Novikov equation (or Adler's lattice). We present the general scheme, but focus mainly of the latter type of models. In the case $N=2$ we obtain a novel Lax representation of Adler's elliptic lattice equation in its so-called 3-leg form. The case of rank $N=3$ is analysed using Cayley's hyperdeterminant of format $2\times2\times2$, yielding a multi-component system of coupled 3-leg quad-equations.

An integrable multicomponent quad equation and its Lagrangian formulation

We present a hierarchy of discrete systems whose first members are the lattice modified Korteweg-de Vries equation, and the lattice modified Boussinesq equation. The N-th member in the hierarchy is an N-component system defined on an elementary plaquette in the 2-dimensional lattice. The system is multidimensionally consistent and a Lagrangian which respects this feature, i.e., which has the desirable closure property, is obtained.

Lagrangian multiform structure for the lattice Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy

The lattice Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy was introduced by Nijhoff, Papageorgiou, Capel and Quispel in 1992 as the family of partial difference equations generalizing to higher rank the lattice Korteweg-de Vries systems, and includes in particular the lattice Boussinesq system. We present a Lagrangian for the generic member of the lattice Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy, and show that it can be considered as a Lagrangian 2-form when embedded in a higher dimensional lattice, obeying a closure relation. Thus the multiform structure proposed in arXiv:0903.4086v2 [nlin.SI] is extended to a multi-component system.

Semi-classical Laguerre polynomials and a third order discrete integrable equation

A semi-discrete Lax pair formed from the differential system and recurrence relation for semi-classical orthogonal polynomials, leads to a discrete integrable equation for a specific semi-classical orthogonal polynomial weight. The main example we use is a semi-classical Laguerre weight to derive a third order difference equation with a corresponding Lax pair.

Lagrangian multiform structure for the lattice KP system

We present a Lagrangian for the bilinear discrete KP (or Hirota-Miwa) equation. Furthermore, we show that this Lagrangian can be extended to a Lagrangian 3-form when embedded in a higher dimensional lattice, obeying a closure relation. Thus we establish the multiform structure as proposed in arXiv:0903.4086v1 [nlin.SI] in a higher dimensional case.

The Discrete and Continuous Painleve VI Hierarchy and the Garnier Systems

We present a general scheme to derive higher-order members of the Painleve VI (PVI) hierarchy of ODE's as well as their difference analogues. The derivation is based on a discrete structure that sits on the background of the PVI equation and that consists of a system of partial difference equations on a multidimensional lattice. The connection with the isomonodromic Garnier systems is discussed.

Discrete Dubrovin Equations and Separation of Variables for Discrete Systems

A universal system of difference equations associated with a hyperelliptic curve is derived constituting the discrete analogue of the Dubrovin equations arising in the theory of finite-gap integration. The parametrisation of the solutions in terms of Abelian functions of Kleinian type (i.e. the higher-genus analogues of the Weierstrass elliptic functions) is discussed as well as the connections with the method of separation of variables.

On the discrete and continuous Miura Chain associated with the Sixth Painlevé Equation

A Miura chain is a (closed) sequence of differential (or difference) equations that are related by Miura or Bäcklund transformations. We describe such a chain for the sixth Painlevé equation (\pvi), containing, apart from \pvi itself, a Schwarzian version as well as a second-order second-degree ordinary differential equation (ODE). As a byproduct we derive an auto-Bäcklund transformation, relating two copies of \pvi with different parameters. We also establish the analogous ordinary difference equations in the discrete counterpart of the chain. Such difference equations govern iterations of solutions of \pvi under Bäcklund transformations. Both discrete and continuous equations constitute a larger system which include partial difference equations, differential-difference equations and partial differential equations, all associated with the lattice Korteweg-de Vries equation subject to similarity constraints.

On Discrete Painleve Equations Associated with the Lattice KdV Systems and the Painleve VI Equation

A new integrable nonautonomous nonlinear ordinary difference equation is presented which can be considered to be a discrete analogue of the Painleve V equation. Its derivation is based on the similarity reduction on the two-dimensional lattice of integrable partial difference equations of KdV type. The new equation which is referred to as GDP (generalised discrete Painleve equation) contains various ``discrete Painleve equations'' as subcases for special values/limits of the parameters, some of which were already given before in the literature. The general solution of the GDP can be expressed in terms of Painleve VI (PVI) transcendents. In fact, continuous PVI emerges as the equation obeyed by the solutions of the discrete equation in terms of the lattice parameters rather than the lattice variables that label the lattice sites. We show that the bilinear form of PVI is embedded naturally in the lattice systems leading to the GDP. Further results include the establishment of Baecklund and Schlesinger transformations for the GDP, the corresponding isomonodromic deformation problem, and the self-duality of its bilinear scheme.

Separation of variables for the Ruijsenaars system

We construct a separation of variables for the classical n-particle Ruijsenaars system (the relativistic analog of the elliptic Calogero-Moser system). The separated coordinates appear as the poles of the properly normalised eigenvector (Baker-Akhiezer function) of the corresponding Lax matrix. Two different normalisations of the BA functions are analysed. The canonicity of the separated variables is verified with the use of r-matrix technique. The explicit expressions for the generating function of the separating canonical transform are given in the simplest cases n=2 and n=3. Taking nonrelativistic limit we also construct a separation of variables for the elliptic Calogero-Moser system.

Integrable Time-Discretisation of the Ruijsenaars-Schneider Model

An exactly integrable symplectic correspondence is derived which in a continuum limit leads to the equations of motion of the relativistic generalization of the Calogero-Moser system, that was introduced for the first time by Ruijsenaars and Schneider. For the discrete-time model the equations of motion take the form of Bethe Ansatz equations for the inhomogeneous spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnet. We present a Lax pair, the symplectic structure and prove the involutivity of the invariants. Exact solutions are investigated in the rational and hyperbolic (trigonometric) limits of the system that is given in terms of elliptic functions. These solutions are connected with discrete soliton equations. The results obtained allow us to consider the Bethe Ansatz equations as ones giving an integrable symplectic correspondence mixing the parameters of the quantum integrable system and the parameters of the corresponding Bethe wavefunction.

Discrete-time Calogero-Moser Model and Lattice KP Equations

We introduce an integrable time-discretized version of the classical Calogero-Moser model, which goes to the original model in a continuum limit. This discrete model is obtained from pole solutions of a semi-discretized version of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, leading to a finite-dimensional symplectic mapping. Lax pair, symplectic structure and sufficient set of invariants of the discrete Calogero-Moser model are constructed for both the rational and elliptic cases. The classical $r$-matrix is the same as for the continuum model. An exact solution of the initial value problem is given for the rational discrete-time Calogero-Moser model. The pole-expansion and elliptic solutions of the fully discretized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation are also discussed.
