Qcmpi: A Parallel Environment for Quantum Computing

QCMPI is a quantum computer (QC) simulation package written in Fortran 90 with parallel processing capabilities. It is an accessible research tool that permits rapid evaluation of quantum algorithms for a large number of qubits and for various "noise" scenarios. The prime motivation for developing QCMPI is to facilitate numerical examination of not only how QC algorithms work, but also to include noise, decoherence, and attenuation effects and to evaluate the efficacy of error correction schemes. The present work builds on an earlier Mathematica code QDENSITY, which is mainly a pedagogic tool. In QCMPI, the stress is on state vectors, in order to employ a large number of qubits. The parallel processing feature is implemented by using the Message-Passing Interface (MPI) protocol. Codes for Grover's search and Shor's factoring algorithms are provided as examples. A major feature of this work is that concurrent versions of the algorithms can be evaluated with each version subject to alternate noise effects, which corresponds to the idea of solving a stochastic Schr\"{o}dinger equation.

Dynamical coupled-channel approach to hadronic and electromagnetic production of kaon-hyperon on the proton

A dynamical coupled-channel formalism for processes $πN \to KY$ and $γN \to KY$ is presented which provides a comprehensive investigation of recent data on the $γp \to K^+ Λ$ reaction. The non-resonant interactions within the subspace $KY\oplusπN$ are derived from effective Lagrangians, using a unitary transformation method. The calculations of photoproduction amplitudes are simplified by casting the coupled-channel equations into a form such that the empirical $γN \to πN$ amplitudes are input and only the parameters associated with the $KY$ channel are determined by performing $χ^2$-fits to all of the available data for $π^- p \to K^\circΛ, K^\circΣ^\circ$ and $γp \to K^+Λ$. Good agreement between our models and those data are obtained. In the fits to $πN \to KY$ channels, most of the parameters are constrained within $\pm 20%$ of the values given by the Particle Data Group and/or quark model predictions, while for $γp \to K^+ Λ$ parameters, ranges compatible with broken $SU(6)\otimes O(3)$ symmetry are imposed. The main reaction mechanisms in $K^+ Λ$ photoproduction are singled out and issues related to newly suggested resonances $S_{11}$, $P_{13}$, and $D_{13}$ are studied. Results illustrating the importance of using a coupled-channel treatment are reported. Meson cloud effects on the $γN \to N^*$ transitions are also discussed.

Analytic calculation of energies and wave functions of the quartic and pure quartic oscillators

Ground state energies and wave functions of quartic and pure quartic oscillators are calculated by first casting the Schrödinger equation into a nonlinear Riccati form and then solving that nonlinear equation analytically in the first iteration of the quasilinearization method (QLM). In the QLM the nonlinear differential equation is solved by approximating the nonlinear terms by a sequence of linear expressions. The QLM is iterative but not perturbative and gives stable solutions to nonlinear problems without depending on the existence of a smallness parameter. Our explicit analytic results are then compared with exact numerical and also with WKB solutions and it is found that our ground state wave functions, using a range of small to large coupling constants, yield a precision of between 0.1 and 1 percent and are more accurate than WKB solutions by two to three orders of magnitude. In addition, our QLM wave functions are devoid of unphysical turning point singularities and thus allow one to make analytical estimates of how variation of the oscillator parameters affects physical systems that can be described by the quartic and pure quartic oscillators.

Coupled channel study of $K^+\Lambda$ photoproduction

A coupled channel model with $\gamma N$, $KY$ and $\pi N$ channels has been used to analyze the recent data of $\gamma p \to K^+ \Lambda$. The non-resonant interactions within the subspace $KY \oplus \pi N$ are derived from effective Lagrangians using a unitary transformation method. The direct photoproduction reaction is obtained from a chiral constituent quark model with $SU(6)\otimes O(3)$ breaking. Missing baryon resonances issues are briefly discussed.

Qdensity - a Mathematica Quantum Computer Simulation

This Mathematica 5.2 package~\footnote{QDENSITY is available at http://www.pitt.edu/~tabakin/QDENSITY} is a simulation of a Quantum Computer. The program provides a modular, instructive approach for generating the basic elements that make up a quantum circuit. The main emphasis is on using the density matrix, although an approach using state vectors is also implemented in the package. The package commands are defined in {\it Qdensity.m} which contains the tools needed in quantum circuits, e.g. multiqubit kets, projectors, gates, etc. Selected examples of the basic commands are presented here and a tutorial notebook, {\it Tutorial.nb} is provided with the package (available on our website) that serves as a full guide to the package. Finally, application is made to a variety of relevant cases, including Teleportation, Quantum Fourier transform, Grover's search and Shor's algorithm, in separate notebooks: {\it QFT.nb}, {\it Teleportation.nb}, {\it Grover.nb} and {\it Shor.nb} where each algorithm is explained in detail. Finally, two examples of the construction and manipulation of cluster states, which are part of ``one way computing" ideas, are included as an additional tool in the notebook {\it Cluster.nb}. A Mathematica palette containing most commands in QDENSITY is also included: {\it QDENSpalette.nb} .

Dynamical coupled-channel study of K+ Lambda photoproduction

Results for the reaction gamma p --> K+ Lambda, studied within a constituent quark model and a dynamical coupled-channel approach, are presented and compared with recent data. Issues related to the search for missing baryon resonances are briefly discussed and the role played by a third S_{11} resonance is underlined.

Dynamical coupled-channel model of kaon-hyperon interactions

The pi N --> KY and KY --> KY reactions are studied using a dynamical coupled-channel model of meson-baryon interactions at energies where the baryon resonances are strongly excited. The channels included are: pi N, K Λ, and KΣ. The resonances considered are: N^* [S_{11}(1650), P_{11}(1710), P_{13}(1720),D_{13}(1700)]; Δ^* [S_{31}(1900), P_{31}(1910), P_{33}(1920)]; Λ^* [S_{01}(1670), P_{01}(1810)] Σ^* [P_{11}(1660), D_{13}(1670)]; and K^*(892). The basic non-resonant πN --> KY and KY --> KY transition potentials are derived from effective Lagrangians using a unitary transformation method. The dynamical coupled-channel equations are simplified by parametrizing the pi N -->pi N amplitudes in terms of empirical pi N partial-wave amplitudes and a phenomenological off-shell function. Two models have been constructed. Model A is built by fixing all coupling constants and resonance parameters using SU(3) symmetry, the Particle Data Group values, and results from a constituent quark model. Model B is obtained by allowing most of the parameters to vary around the values of model A in fitting the data. Good fits to the available data for pi^- p to K^0 Λ, K^0 Σ^0 have been achieved. The investigated kinematics region in the center-of-mass frame goes from threshold to 2.5 GeV. The constructed models can be imbedded into associated dynamical coupled-channel studies of kaon photo- and electro-production reactions.

Quasilinearization Approach to Nonlinear Problems in Physics with Application to Nonlinear ODEs

The general conditions under which the quadratic, uniform and monotonic convergence in the quasilinearization method of solving nonlinear ordinary differential equations could be proved are formulated and elaborated. The generalization of the proof to partial differential equations is straight forward. The method, whose mathematical basis in physics was discussed recently by one of the present authors (VBM), approximates the solution of a nonlinear differential equation by treating the nonlinear terms as a perturbation about the linear ones, and unlike perturbation theories is not based on the existence of some kind of a small parameter. It is shown that the quasilinearization method gives excellent results when applied to different nonlinear ordinary differential equations in physics, such as the Blasius, Duffing, Lane-Emden and Thomas-Fermi equations. The first few quasilinear iterations already provide extremely accurate and numerically stable answers.

Coupled-channel study of gamma p --> K+ Lambda

A coupled-channel (CC) approach has been developed to investigate kaon photoproduction on the nucleon. In addition to direct K+ Lambda production, our CC approach accounts for strangeness production including K+ Lambda final state interactions with both pi0 p and pi+ n intermediate states. Calculations for the gamma p --> K+ Lambda reaction have been performed, and compared with the recent data from SAPHIR, with emphasis on the CC effects. We show that the CC effects are significant at the level of inducing 20% changes on total cross sections; thereby, demonstrating the need to include pi N channels to correctly describe the gamma p --> K+ Lambda reaction.
