Modified Abelian and SU(2) Wilson theories on a lattice from a non-compact regularization

Multiflavor gauge theories of matter systems on a three-dimensional lattice have recently been widely investigated especially in connection with a possible symmetry enlargement at a continuous phase transition. Abelian models were studied both with compact gauge fields and in a mixed formulation in which the coupling with matter fields is in compact form while the gauge fields Lagrangian is written in terms of noncompact gauge fields, getting quite different results. Such a mixed formulation is not permissible for non-Abelian theories, for which however there exists an entirely noncompact formulation (in which exact gauge invariance is enforced by help of auxiliary fields), which for SU(2) was shown to yield in the scaling window a larger physical volume than Wilson's one. The corresponding U(1) noncompact regularization is derived in the present work. In both Abelian and SU(2) cases there is only one auxiliary field that for a large mass has a linear coupling with the other fields and it can be integrated out yielding a negative definite correction. The coupling with the auxiliary field might make the inversion of the fermion matrix easier.

Simple condensation of composite bosons in a number conserving approach to many fermion systems

We recently derived the Hamiltonian of fermionic composites by an exact procedure of bosonization. In the present paper expand this Hamiltonian in the inverse of the number of fermionic states in the composite wave function and give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of such an expansion. We compare the results to the Random phase Approximation and the BCS theory and perform an illustrative application of the method.

Composite bosons and quasiparticles in a number conserving approach

I recently proposed a method of bosonization valid for systems of an even number of fermions whose partition function is dominated at low energy by bosonic composites. This method respects all symmetries, in particular fermion number conservation. I extend it to treat odd systems and excitations involving unpaired fermions.

The multilevel pairing Hamiltonian versus the degenerate case

We study the pairing Hamiltonian in a set of non degenerate levels. First, we review in the path integral framework the spontaneous breaking of the U(1) symmetry occurring in such a system for the degenerate situation. Then the behaviors with the coupling constant of the ground state energy in the multilevel and in the degenerate case are compared. Next we discuss, in the multilevel case, an exact strong coupling expansion for the ground state energy which introduces the moments of the single particle level distribution. The domain of validity of the expansion, which is known in the macroscopic limit, is explored for finite systems and its implications for the energy of the latter is discussed. Finally the seniority and Gaudin excitations of the pairing Hamiltonian are addressed and shown to display the same gap in leading order.

Interpreting concurrence in terms of covariances in a generalized spin star system

The quantum dynamics of M pairwise coupled spin 1/2 is analyzed and the time evolution of the entanglement get established within a prefixed couple of spins is studied. A conceptual and quantitative link between the concurrence function and measurable quantities is brought to light providing a physical interpretation for the concurrence itself as well as a way to measure it. A generalized spin star system is exactly investigated showing that the entanglement accompanying its rich dynamics is traceable back to the covariance of appropriate commuting observables of the two spins.

Path integrals and degrees of freedom in many-body systems and relativistic field theories

The identification of physical degrees of freedom is sometimes obscured in the path integral formalism, and this makes it difficult to impose some constraints or to do some approximations. I review a number of cases where the difficulty is overcame by deriving the path integral from the operator form of the partition function after such identification has been made.

The Goldstone bosons in the pairing Hamiltonian: the path integral approach

As a first step to derive the IBM from a microscopic nuclear hamiltonian, we bosonize the pairing hamiltonian in the framework of the path integral formalism respecting both the particle number conservation and the Pauli principle. Special attention is payed to the role of the Goldstone bosons. We construct the saddle point expansion which reproduces the sector of the spectrum associated to the addition or removal of nucleon pairs.

The chemical potential in the transfer matrix and in the path integral formulation of QCD on a lattice

We define the chemical potential as the Lagrange multiplier of the baryon charge operator in the transfer matrix formalism of QCD on a lattice. Transforming the partition function into an euclidean path integral we get the Hasenfratz-Karsh action both for Wilson and Kogut-Susskind fermions. In the latter case the chemical potential in the spin-diagonal basis is half that in the flavour basis. Some open problems in the spin-diagonal basis are pointed out.

Series expansion of the quark determinant in the number of quark-antiquark pairs

We propose a formulation of the QCD partition function which leads to a series expansion of the quark determinant in any given baryonic sector. The r-th term gives the gauge-invariant contribution of the valence quarks plus r quark-antiquark pairs. This expansion can be used to investigate any baryonic sector, starting from the nucleon up to high baryonic densities.

Bosonization of the pairing Hamiltonian

The problem of the pairing interaction is dealt with even Grassmann variables in the hamiltonian framework. Eigenfunctions of given energy, seniority and zero third component of angular momentum are given in terms of single particle and collective bosonic fields.

A composite bosons minimal basis for the pairing Hamiltonian

The pairing interaction among identical nucleons in a single-particle level is treated in the hamiltonian formalism using even Grassmann variables. A minimal (irreducible) basis having a remarkable symmetry property is set up using composite, commuting variables with a finite index of nilpotency. Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of given energy, seniority and zero third component of the angular momentum of the pairing hamiltonian are then found. The eigenvectors, which cannot be cast solely in terms of composite bosons with angular momentum zero and two, are expanded in the minimal basis with coefficients analytically expressed in terms of a generalized hypergeometric function.

The quark-composites approach to QCD: The nucleons

We present a new perturbative approach to QCD based on the use of quark composites with hadronic quantum numbers as fundamental variables. We apply it to the case of the nucleons by performing a nonlinear change of variables in the Berezin integral which defines the partition function of QCD. The nucleon composites are thereby assumed as new integration variables. We evaluate the jacobian and certain transformation functions which appear in the change of variables. We show that the free action of the nucleon composites is the Dirac action, and we evaluate the first perturbative contributions to their electroweak effective action, which turn out to be a pure renormalization. Our expansion is compatible with a perturbative as well as nonperturbative regime of the gluons and it has the characteristic feature that the confinement of the quarks is buit in.

Bosonization and even Grassmann variables

A new approach to bosonization in relativistic field theories and many-body systems, based on the use of fermionic composites as integration variables in the Berezin integral defining the partition function of the system, is tested. The method is applied to the study of a simplified version of the BCS model.

Lower scaling dimensions of quarks and gluons and new energy scales

We consider the possibility that quarks and gluons, due to confinement, have lower scaling dimensions. In such a case there appear naturally new energy scales below which the standard theory is recovered. Arguments are given whereby for dimension $1/2$ of the quarks the theory is unitary also above these energy scales.
