Deposition dynamics of Na monomers and dimers on an Ar(001) substrate

We study deposition dynamics of Na and Na$_2$ on an Ar substrate, both species neutral as well as charged. The system is modeled by a hierarchical approach describing the Na valence electrons by time-dependent density-functional theory while Na core, Ar atoms and their dynamical polarizability are treated by molecular dynamics. We explore effects of Na charge and initial kinetic energy of the impinging Na system. We find that neutral Na is captured into a loosely bound adsorbate state for sufficiently low impact energy. The charged monomers are more efficiently captured and the cation Na$^+$ even penetrates the surface layer. For charged dimers, we come to different final configurations depending on the process, direct deposit of Na$_2^+$ as a whole, or sequential deposit. In any case, charge dramatically amplifies the excitation of the matrix, in particular at the side of the Ar dipoles. The presence of a charge also enhances the binding to the surface and favours accumulation of larger compounds.

Shape dynamics during deposit of simple metal clusters on rare gas matrices

Using a combined quantum mechanical/classical method, we study the collisions of small Na clusters on large Ar clusters as a model for cluster deposit. We work out basic mechanisms by systematic variation of collision energy, system sizes, and orientations. The soft Ar material is found to serve as an extremely efficient shock absorber. The collisional energy is quickly transfered at first impact and the Na clusters are always captured by the Ar surface. The distribution of the collision energy into the Ar system proceeds very fast with velocity of sound. The relaxation of shapes goes at a slower pace using times of several ps. It produces a substantial rearrangement of the Ar system while the Na cluster remains rather robust.

Embedded metal cluster in strong laser fields

We discuss microscopic mechanisms of the violent dynamics following strong laser excitation of a metal cluster embedded in a rare gas matrix, taking as test case Na$_8$@Ar$_434$. This covers at least two aspects : first, it represents the typical experimental situation of metal clusters handled in raregas matrices or a finite drop of surrounding raregas material, and second, it serves as a generic test case for highly excited chromophores in inert surroundings addressing questions of energy transport and perturbation of the medium. We simulate the process up to 10 ps using a mixed quantum mechanical (for the electrons) and classical (ions and atoms) approach and analyze the emerging dynamics with respect to all basic constituents : cluster electrons, cluster ions, and matrix atoms. We find several stages of relaxation taking place with time scales from a few fs to over a few ps and much slower processes remaining for long after the simulation. A particularly interesting aspect is that the surrounding raregas material stabilizes a highly charged metal cluster which would otherwise explode without delay.

Hindered Coulomb explosion of embedded Na clusters -- stopping, shape dynamics and energy transport

We investigate the dynamical evolution of a Na$_8$ cluster embedded in Ar matrices of various sizes from N=30 to 1048. The system is excited by an intense short laser pulse leading to high ionization stages. We analyze the subsequent highly non-linear motion of cluster and Ar environment in terms of trajectories, shapes, and energy flow. The most prominent effects are: temporary stabilization of high charge states for several ps, sudden stopping of the Coulomb explosion of the embedded Na$_8$ clusters associated with an extremely fast energy transfer to the Ar matrix, fast distribution of energy throughout the Ar layers by a sound wave. Other ionic-atomic transfer and relaxation processes proceed at slower scale of few ps. The electron cloud is almost thermally decoupled from ions and thermalizes far beyond the ps scale.

Dynamics of cluster deposition on Ar surface

Using a combined quantum mechanical/classical method, we study the dynamics of deposition of small Na clusters on Ar(001) surface. We work out basic mechanisms by systematic variation of substrate activity, impact energy, cluster orientations, cluster sizes, and charges. The soft Ar material is found to serve as an extremely efficient shock absorber which provides cluster capture in a broad range of impact energies. Reflection is only observed in combination with destruction of the substrate. The kinetic energy of the impinging cluster is rapidly transfered at first impact. The distribution of the collision energy over the substrate proceeds very fast with velocity of sound. The full thermalization of ionic and atomic energies goes at a much slower pace with times of several ps. Charged clusters are found to have a much stronger interface interaction and thus get in significantly closer contact with the surface.

Structural properties and optical response of Na clusters in Ne, Ar, and Kr matrices

We discuss the structural properties and optical response of a small Na cluster inside rare gas (RG) matrices of Ne, Ar, or Kr atoms. The mixed systems are described with a hierarchical model, treating the cluster at a quantum mechanical level and the matrix atoms classically in terms of their positions and polarizations. We pay special attention to the differences caused by the different matrix types. These differences can be explained by the interplay of core repulsion and dipole attraction in the interaction between the cluster electrons and the RG atoms.

Size and charge effects on the deposition of Na on Ar

We discuss the dynamical deposition of the Na atom, the Na$^+$ in and the Na$_6$ cluster on finite Ar clusters mocking up an infinite Ar surface. We analyze this scenario as a function of projectile initial kinetic energy and of the size the target cluster.

Dynamics of metal clusters in rare gas clusters

We investigate the dynamics of Na clusters embedded in Ar matrices. We use a hierarchical approach, accounting microscopically for the cluster's degrees of freedom and more coarsely for the matrix. The dynamical polarizability of the Ar atoms and the strong Pauli-repulsion exerted by the Ar-electrons are taken into account. We discuss the impact of the matrix on the cluster gross properties and on its optical response. We then consider a realistic case of irradiation by a moderately intense laser and discuss the impact of the matrix on the hindrance of the explosion, as well as a possible pump probe scenario for analyzing dynamical responses.

Modeling Na clusters in Ar matrices

We present a microscopic model for Na clusters embedded in raregas matrices. The valence electrons of the Na cluster are described by time-dependent density-functional theory at the level of the local-density approximation (LDA). Particular attention is paid to the semi-classical picture in terms of Vlasov-LDA. The Na ions and Argon atoms are handled as classical particles whereby the Ar atoms carry two degrees of freedom, position and dipole polarization. The interaction between Na ions and electrons is mediated through local pseudo-potentials. The coupling to the Ar atoms is described by (long-range) polarization potentials and (short-range) repulsive cores. The ingredients are taken from elsewhere developed standards. A final fine-tuning is performed using the NaAr molecule as benchmark. The model is then applied to embedded systems Na8ArN. By close comparison with quantum-mechanical results, we explore the capability of the Vlasov-LDA to describe such embedded clusters. We show that one can obtain a reasonable description by appropriate adjustments in the fine-tuning phase of the model.
