On permutation characters and Sylow $p$-subgroups of $\mathfrak{S}_n$

Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $n$ be a natural number. In this article we determine the irreducible constituents of the permutation module induced by the action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the cosets of a Sylow $p$-subgroup $P_n$. As a consequence, we determine the number of irreducible representations of the corresponding Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}(\mathfrak{S}_n, P_n, 1_{P_n})$.

Hook removal operators on the odd Young graph

In this article we consider hook removal operators on odd partitions, i.e., partitions labelling odd-degree irreducible characters of finite symmetric groups. In particular we complete the discussion, started by Isaacs, Navarro, Olsson and Tiep in 2016, concerning the commutativity of such operators.

Even degree characters in principal blocks

We characterise finite groups such that for an odd prime $p$ all the irreducible characters in its principal $p$-block have odd degree. We show that this situation does not occur in non-abelian simple groups of order divisible by $p$ unless $p=7$ and the group is $M_{22}$. As a consequence we deduce that if $p\neq 7$ or if $M_{22}$ is not a composition factor of a group $G$, then the condition above is equivalent to $G/O_{p'}(G)$ having odd order.

Restriction of Odd Degree Characters of $\mathfrak{S}_n$

Let $n$ and $k$ be natural numbers such that $2^k < n$. We study the restriction to $\mathfrak{S}_{n-2^k}$ of odd-degree irreducible characters of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. This analysis completes the study begun in [Ayyer A., Prasad A., Spallone S., Sem. Lothar. Combin. 75 (2015), Art. B75g, 13 pages] and recently developed in [Isaacs I.M., Navarro G., Olsson J.B., Tiep P.H., J. Algebra 478 (2017), 271-282].

On the $p'$-subgraph of the Young graph

Let $p$ be a prime number. In this article we study the restriction to $\mathfrak{S}_{n-1}$ of irreducible characters of degree coprime to $p$ of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. In particular, we study the combinatorial properties of the subgraph $\mathbb{Y}_{p'}$ of the Young graph $\mathbb{Y}$. This is an extension to odd primes of the work done by Ayyer, Prasad and Spallone for $p=2$.

Irreducible characters of $3'$-degree of finite symmetric, general linear and unitary groups

Let $G$ be a finite symmetric, general linear, or general unitary group defined over a field of characteristic coprime to $3$. We construct a canonical correspondence between irreducible characters of degree coprime to $3$ of $G$ and those of $N_{G}(P)$, where $P$ is a Sylow $3$-subgroup of $G$. Since our bijections commute with the action of the absolute Galois group over the rationals, we conclude that fields of values of character correspondents are the same.

On signed p-Kostka numbers and the indecomposable signed Young permutation modules

We prove the existence and main properties of signed Young modules for the symmetric group, using only basic facts about symmetric group representations and the Brou{é} correspondence. We then prove new reduction theorems for the signed $p$-Kostka numbers, defined to be the multiplicities of signed Young modules as direct summands of signed Young permutation modules. We end by classifying the indecomposable signed Young permutation modules and determining their endomorphism algebras.

Hausdorff dimension in $R$-analytic profinite groups

We study the Hausdorff dimension of R-analytic subgroups in an R-analytic profinite group, where R is a pro-p ring whose asso- ciated graded ring is an integral domain. In particular, we prove that the set of such Hausdorff dimensions is a finite subset of the rational numbers.

Restriction of odd degree characters and natural correspondences

Let $q$ be an odd prime power, $n > 1$, and let $P$ denote a maximal parabolic subgroup of $GL_n(q)$ with Levi subgroup $GL_{n-1}(q) \times GL_1(q)$. We restrict the odd-degree irreducible characters of $GL_n(q)$ to $P$ to discover a natural correspondence of characters, both for $GL_n(q)$ and $SL_n(q)$. A similar result is established for certain finite groups with self-normalizing Sylow $p$-subgroups. We also construct a canonical bijection between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $S_n$ and those of $M$, where $M$ is any maximal subgroup of $S_n$ of odd index; as well as between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $G = GL_n(q)$ or $GU_n(q)$ with $q$ odd and those of $N_{G}(P)$, where $P$ is a Sylow $2$-subgroup of $G$. Since our bijections commute with the action of the absolute Galois group over the rationals, we conclude that the fields of values of character correspondents are the same. We use this to answer some questions of R. Gow.

Characters of odd degree of symmetric groups

We construct a natural bijection between odd-degree irreducible characters of S_n and linear characters of its Sylow 2-subgroup P_n. When n is a power of 2, we show that such a bijection is nicely induced by the restriction functor. We conclude with a characterization of the irreducible characters χof S_n such that the restriction of χto P_n has a unique linear constituent.

Indecomposable summands of Foulkes modules

In this paper we study the modular structure of the permutation module $H^{(2^n)}$ of the symmetric group $S_{2n}$ acting on set partitions of a set of size $2n$ into $n$ sets each of size $2$, defined over a field of odd characteristic $p$. In particular we characterize the vertices of the indecomposable summands of $H^{(2^n)}$ and fully describe all of its indecomposable summands that lie in blocks of $p$-weight at most two. When $2n < 3p$ we show that there is a unique summand of $H^{(2^n)}$ in the principal block of $S_{2n}$ and that this summand exhibits many of the extensions between simple modules in its block.

Sylow subgroups of symmetric and alternating groups and the vertex of $S^{(kp-p,1^p)}$ in characteristic $p$

We show that the Sylow $p$-subgroups of a symmetric group, respectively an alternating group, are characterized as the $p$-subgroups containing all elementary abelian $p$-subgroups up to conjugacy of the symmetric group, respectively the alternating group. We apply the characterization result for symmetric groups to compute the vertices of the hook Specht modules associated to the partition $(kp-p,1^p)$ under the assumption that $k \equiv 1$ mod $p$ and $k \not\equiv 1$ mod $p^2$.

Foulkes modules and decomposition numbers of the symmetric group

The decomposition matrix of a finite group in prime characteristic p records the multiplicities of its p-modular irreducible representations as composition factors of the reductions modulo p of its irreducible representations in characteristic zero. The main theorem of this paper gives a combinatorial description of certain columns of the decomposition matrices of symmetric groups in odd prime characteristic. The result applies to blocks of arbitrarily high weight. It is obtained by studying the p-local structure of certain twists of the permutation module given by the action of the symmetric group of even degree 2m on the collection of set partitions of a set of size 2m into m sets each of size two. In particular, the vertices of the indecomposable summands of all such modules are characterized; these summands form a new family of indecomposable p-permutation modules for the symmetric group. As a further corollary it is shown that for every natural number w there is a diagonal Cartan number in a block of the symmetric group of weight w equal to w+1.

On permutation modules and decomposition numbers for symmetric groups

We study the indecomposable summands of the permutation module obtained by inducing the trivial $\mathbb{F}(S_a\wr S_n)$-module to the full symmetric group $S_{an}$ for any field $\mathbb{F}$ of odd prime characteristic $p$ such that $a<p\leq n$. In particular we characterize the vertices of such indecomposable summands. As a corollary we will disprove a modular version of Foulkes' Conjecture. In the second part of the article we will use this information to give a new description of some columns of the decomposition matrices of symmetric groups in terms of the ordinary character of the Foulkes module $ϕ^{(a^n)}$.

A new lower bound on the vertices of Specht modules for the symmetric groups

In this paper we study the vertices of indecomposable Specht modules for symmetric groups. For any given indecomposable non-projective Specht module, the main theorem of the article describes a family of p-subgroups contained in its vertex. The theorem generalizes and improves an earlier result due to Wildon in "Vertices of Specht modules and blocks of the symmetric group", J. Alg 323 (2010) 2243--2256.

On the decomposition of the Foulkes module

The Foulkes module H^(a^b) is the permutation module for the symmetric group S_ab given by the action of S_ab on the collection of set partitions of a set of size ab into b sets each of size a. The main result of this paper is a sufficient condition for a simple CS_{ab}-module to have zero multiplicity in H^(a^b). A special case of this result implies that no Specht module labelled by a hook partition (ab - r, 1^r) appears in H(a^b).
