CMS Token Transition

Within the LHC community, a momentous transition has been occurring in authorization. For nearly 20 years, services within the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) have authorized based on mapping an identity, derived from an X.509 credential, or a group/role, derived from a VOMS extension issued by the experiment. A fundamental shift is occurring to capabilities: the credential, a bearer token, asserts the authorizations of the bearer, not the identity. By the HL-LHC era, the CMS experiment plans for the transition to tokens, based on the WLCG Common JSON Web Token profile, to be complete. Services in the technology architecture include the INDIGO Identity and Access Management server to issue tokens; a HashiCorp Vault server to store and refresh access tokens for users and jobs; a managed token bastion server to push credentials to the HTCondor CredMon service; and HTCondor to maintain valid tokens in long-running batch jobs. We will describe the transition plans of the experiment, current status, configuration of the central authorization server, lessons learned in commissioning token-based access with sites, and operational experience using tokens for both job submissions and file transfers.

HEPCloud, an Elastic Hybrid HEP Facility using an Intelligent Decision Support System

HEPCloud is rapidly becoming the primary system for provisioning compute resources for all Fermilab-affiliated experiments. In order to reliably meet the peak demands of the next generation of High Energy Physics experiments, Fermilab must plan to elastically expand its computational capabilities to cover the forecasted need. Commercial cloud and allocation-based High Performance Computing (HPC) resources both have explicit and implicit costs that must be considered when deciding when to provision these resources, and at which scale. In order to support such provisioning in a manner consistent with organizational business rules and budget constraints, we have developed a modular intelligent decision support system (IDSS) to aid in the automatic provisioning of resources spanning multiple cloud providers, multiple HPC centers, and grid computing federations. In this paper, we discuss the goals and architecture of the HEPCloud Facility, the architecture of the IDSS, and our early experience in using the IDSS for automated facility expansion both at Fermi and Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Rucio - Scientific data management

Rucio is an open-source software framework that provides scientific collaborations with the functionality to organize, manage, and access their data at scale. The data can be distributed across heterogeneous data centers at widely distributed locations. Rucio was originally developed to meet the requirements of the high-energy physics experiment ATLAS, and now is continuously extended to support the LHC experiments and other diverse scientific communities. In this article, we detail the fundamental concepts of Rucio, describe the architecture along with implementation details, and give operational experience from production usage.

HEP Software Foundation Community White Paper Working Group -- Data Organization, Management and Access (DOMA)

Without significant changes to data organization, management, and access (DOMA), HEP experiments will find scientific output limited by how fast data can be accessed and digested by computational resources. In this white paper we discuss challenges in DOMA that HEP experiments, such as the HL-LHC, will face as well as potential ways to address them. A research and development timeline to assess these changes is also proposed.

Charmed hadron spectroscopy from FOCUS

We present charmed hadron spectroscopy results from the photoproduction experiment FOCUS (FNAL-E831). We report new, precise measurements of the masses and widths of the $\dmeson_2^{*+}$ and $\dmeson_2^{*0}$ mesons, evidence for the $\dmeson_0^{*+}$ and $\dmeson_0^{*0}$ broad states (the first such evidence in $\dzero \piplus$), and confirmation of the recently observed $\dmeson_s^+(2317)$ charmed-strange state.
