High order harmonic Optical Reconstruction by delayed time-depeNdent Ellipticity perturbaTion: HORNET

We present and demonstrate an all-optical \textit{in situ} method for temporal characterisation of high-order harmonics generated in gas with a linearly polarised intense infrared (IR) laser. By using a delayed cross-polarised replica of the IR pulse with a lower amplitude, we introduce a weak and time-dependent ellipticity in the IR driving field. Since the XUV emission is very sensitive to the ellipticity of the driving field, it is perturbed precisely at the times when ellipticity is significant. The detected emission is then reduced only if the unperturbed XUV emission is substantial at these times. Perturbed XUV spectra are recorded for several delays and exhibit changes both in amplitude and in their spectral content. An iterative ptychographic algorithm is used to retrieve the electric field of individual harmonics in a very robust way. Experimental measurements are in good agreement with simulations. The reconstructed temporal profiles show a steady evolution of the XUV pulse duration and chirp with the harmonic order. The highest harmonics exhibit a positive chirp and are emitted in the rising front of the IR driving pulse, while the lowest ones exhibit a negative chirp and are emitted throughout the entire pulse.

2D quantum-path interference in high-harmonic generation driven by highly-bichromatic fields

We experimentally observe a new type of quantum-path interference, in two-dimensions (2D-QPI), in high-harmonic generation (HHG) driven by an orthogonally-polarised highly-bichromatic field. This regime is marked by comparable intensities of the two orthogonal colours. In this highly-bichromatic regime, we demonstrate that 2D-QPI is encoded in the measured harmonic intensity modulations with respect to the relative phase of the two-colour field. The modulations of the odd-order harmonics show a monomodal behaviour, whereas the even harmonics are modulated in a bimodal structure. Our calculations using the strong-field approximation and saddle-point method disentangle contributions from multiple quantum orbits in this HHG regime, revealing that the dipole response for both odd and even harmonics inherits the dynamic symmetry of the orthogonally-polarised driving field. This new type of 2D-QPI offers a novel route to HHG spectroscopy of attosecond electron dynamics by lifting up the dimensionality of the quantum paths involved in the interference.

Femtosecond Laser Induced Resonant Tunneling in an Individual Quantum Dot Attached to a Nanotip

Quantized nano-objects offer a myriad of exciting possibilities for manipulating electrons and light that impact photonics, nanoelectronics, and quantum information. In this context, ultrashort laser pulses combined with nanotips and field emission have permitted renewing nano-characterization and control electron dynamics with unprecedented space and time resolution reaching femtosecond and even attosecond regimes. A crucial missing step in these experiments is that no signature of quantized energy levels has yet been observed. We combine in situ nanostructuration of nanotips and ultrashort laser pulse excitation to induce multiphoton excitation and electron emission from a single quantized nano-object attached at the apex of a metal nanotip. Femtosecond induced tunneling through well-defined localized confinement states that are tunable in energy is demonstrated. This paves the way for the development of ultrafast manipulation of electron emission from isolated nano-objects including stereographically fixed individual molecules and high brightness, ultrafast, coherent single electron sources for quantum optics experiments.

Post-compression of high energy terawatt-level femtosecond pulses and application to high order harmonic generation

We perform a post-compression of high energy pulses by using optical-field ionization of low pressure helium gas in a guided geometry. We apply this approach to a TW chirped-pulse-amplification based Ti:Sapphire laser chain and show that spectral broadening can be controlled both with the input pulse energy and gas pressure. Under optimized conditions, we generate 10 fs pulses at TW level directly under vacuum and demonstrate a high stability of the post compressed pulse duration. These high energy post-compressed pulses are thereafter used to perform high harmonic generation in a loose focusing geometry. The XUV beam is characterized both spatially and spectrally on a single shot basis and structured continuous XUV spectra are observed.

Near infrared few-cycle pulses for high harmonic generation

We report on the development of tunable few-cycle pulses with central wavelengths from 1.6 um to 2 um. Theses pulses were used as a proof of principle for high harmonic generation in atomic and molecular targets. In order to generate such pulses we produced a filament in a 4 bar krypton cell. Spectral broadening by a factor of 2 to 3 of a 40 fs near infrared input pulse was achieved. The spectrally broadened output pulses were then compressed by fused silica plates down to the few-cycle regime close to the Fourier limit. The auto-correlation of these pulses revealed durations of about 3 cycles for all investigated central wavelengths. Pulses with a central wavelength of 1.7 um and up to 430 uJ energy per pulse were employed to generate high order harmonics in Xe, Ar and N2. Moving to near infrared few-cycle pulses opens the possibility to operate deeply in the non-perturbative regime with a Keldysh parameter smaller than 1. Hence, this source is suitable for the study of the non-adiabatic tunneling regime in most generating systems used for high order harmonic generation and attoscience.
