Ultra-Low-Rate Information Reconciliation: Repetition Coding or Dedicated Codes?

We compare repetition-based ultra-low-rate information reconciliation with dedicated ultra-low-rate codes for CV-QKD. Repetition coding offers a favorable performance-complexity trade-off, incurring only a moderate error-rate penalty while reducing decoding complexity by $2\times$, making it attractive for implementation-constrained systems.

Towards a Unified Coding Scheme for 6G

The growing demand for higher data rates necessitates continuous innovations in wireless communication systems, particularly with the emergence of 6G. Channel coding plays a crucial role in this evolution. In 5G systems, rate-adaptive raptor-like quasi-cyclic irregular low-density parity-check codes are used for the data link, while polar codes with successive cancellation list decoding handle short messages on the synchronization channel. However, to meet the stringent requirements of future 6G systems, a versatile and unified coding scheme should be developed - one that offers competitive error-correcting performance alongside low complexity encoding and decoding schemes that enable energy-efficient hardware implementations. This white paper outlines the vision for such a unified coding scheme. We explore various 6G communication scenarios that pose new challenges to channel coding and provide a first analysis of potential solutions.

Practical Methods for Distance-Adaptive Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is a promising quantum-safe alternative to classical asymmetric cryptography that enables two authenticated parties to establish a shared secret over a potentially eavesdropped quantum channel. A key step in CV-QKD post-processing is information reconciliation, which leverages forward error correction (FEC) techniques to extract identical bit strings from noisy correlated data. In this work, we analyze the strict limitations on operating distance that are imposed by constant-rate FEC, severely limiting the practicability of CV-QKD systems in deployed optical networks. To overcome the distance limitations, we evaluate three strategies: (i) tuning modulation variance, (ii) adding controlled amounts of trusted detector loss, and (iii) the use of rate-adaptive FEC. All approaches are validated experimentally, compared in terms of performance, and we discuss implementation aspects. Our results show that while methods (i) and (ii) extend the operational distance of constant-rate FEC without the need for additional hardware components, they incur a significant penalty in secret key rate (SKR). In contrast, rate-adaptive FEC enables CV-QKD operation with performance close to the asymptotic SKR over a wide range of distances, provided that the reconciliation efficiency is chosen appropriately.

Protograph-Based LDPC Codes with Local Irregularity

Forward error correcting (FEC) codes are used in many communication standards with a wide range of re quirements. FEC codes should work close to capacity, achieve low error floors, and have low decoding complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel category of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, based on protograph codes with local irregularity. This new code family generalizes conventional protograph-based LDPC codes and is capable of reducing the iterative decoding threshold of the conventional counterpart. We introduce an adapted version of the protograph extrinsic information transfer (PEXIT) algorithm to estimate decoding thresholds on the binary input additive white Gaussian noise channel, perform optimiza tions on the local irregularity, and simulate the performance of some constructed codes.

An Open-Source Library for Information Reconciliation in Continuous-Variable QKD

This paper presents an easy-to-use open-source software library for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems. The library, written in C++, simplifies the crucial task of information reconciliation, ensuring that both communicating parties share the same secret key despite the noise. It offers a comprehensive set of tools, including modules for multidimensional reconciliation, error correction, and data integrity checks. Designed with user-friendliness in mind, the library hides the complexity of error correction, making it accessible even to users without knowledge of error-correcting codes.

Log-Log Domain Sum-Product Algorithm for Information Reconciliation in Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution

In this paper, we present a novel log-log domain sum-product algorithm (SPA) for decoding low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems. This algorithm reduces the fractional bit width of decoder messages, leading to a smaller memory footprint and a lower resource consumption in hardware implementation. We also provide practical insights for fixed-point arithmetic and compare our algorithm with the conventional SPA in terms of performance and complexity. Our results show that our algorithm achieves comparable or better decoding accuracy than the conventional SPA while saving at least $25\%$ of the fractional bit width.
