Fractional Chern insulators and composite Fermi liquids vs. charge order in twisted MoTe$_2$

The bandstructure of twisted MoTe$_2$ around 3.7$^\circ$ consists of spin-valley locked Chern bands with a bandwidth that is smaller than the interaction scale. As such, the strongly correlated phases familiar from Landau levels can be realized: Quantum Hall states, composite Fermi liquids and charge order. These states have in common that they are all favoured by strong interactions, however changing the quantum geometry and topology of the bands as well as their bandwidth via the displacement field and twist angle tilts the balance between them. We provide a comprehensive exact diagonalization analysis of the competition between these states and in particular elucidate the nature of the charge order at fillings $ν=-\frac14,-\frac13,-\frac12,-\frac23$. Furthermore, we analyze the effect of band mixing by going beyond a single band per valley. This effect of band mixing is crucial for reconciling the numerical phase diagrams with experimental observations.

Full, three-quarter, half and quarter Wigner crystals in Bernal bilayer graphene

Application of a displacement field opens a gap and enhances the Van-Hove singularities in the band structure of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene. By adjusting the carrier density so that the Fermi energy lies in the vicinity of these singularities, recent experiments observe a plethora of highly correlated electronic phases including isospin polarized phases and high-resistance states with non-linear electric transport indicative of a possible Wigner crystal. We perform Hartree-Fock calculations incorporating long-range Coulomb interactions and allowing for translational and rotational symmetry breaking. We obtain the displacement field vs. carrier density phase diagram which shows isospin polarized metallic phases tracking the Van-Hove singularity in the valence band. Between these metallic phases we observe regions where the ground state is a Wigner crystal. The isospin polarization of the Wigner crystals tracks the isospin polarization of the nearby metallic phases. Depending on whether we have four, three, two or one isospin flavours, we obtain a full, three-quarter, half or quarter Wigner crystal.

Reduction of the Twisted Bilayer Graphene Chiral Hamiltonian into a $2\times2$ matrix operator and physical origin of flat-bands at magic angles

The chiral Hamiltonian for twisted graphene bilayers is written as a $2\times2$ matrix operator by a renormalization of the Hamiltonian that takes into account the particle-hole symmetry. This results in an effective Hamiltonian with an average field plus and effective non-Abelian gauge potential. The action of the proposed renormalization maps the zero-mode region into the ground state. Modes near zero energy have an antibonding nature in a triangular lattice. This leads to a phase-frustration effect associated with massive degeneration, and makes flat-bands modes similar to confined modes observed in other bipartite lattices. Suprisingly, the proposed Hamiltonian renormalization suggests that flat-bands at magic angles are akin to floppy-mode bands in flexible crystals or glasses, making an unexpected connection between rigidity topological theory and magic angle twisted two-dimensional heterostructures physics.
