Ergodicity and weak mixing for group-indexed infinitely divisible stationary processes

We prove that for an arbitrary indexing group, every ergodic infinitely divisible stationary process that is separable in probability is weakly mixing. This shows that, as in the well-known case of Gaussian stationary processes, ergodicity implies weak mixing is intrinsic to infinite divisibility, removing all structural assumptions on the group from prior results. The main ingredient is a general construction of stochastically continuous extensions for separable in probability stationary processes, reducing the problem to stochastically continuous processes indexed by Polish groups and then to countable groups, where we combine the Maruyama representation with an ergodicity criterion for Poisson suspensions.

Poissonian Actions of Polish Groups

We define and study Poissonian actions of Polish groups as a framework to Poisson suspensions, characterize them spectrally, and provide a complete characterization of their ergodicity. We further construct 'spatial' Poissonian actions, answering partially a question of Glasner, Tsirelson & Weiss about L\'evy groups. We also construct for every diffeomorphism group an ergodic free spatial probability preserving actions. This constitutes a new class of Polish groups admitting non-essentially countable orbit equivalence relations, obtaining progress on a problem of Kechris.

Confined Poisson extensions

This paper follows on from our previous work, where we introduced the notion of \emph{confined extensions}, and our purpose is to widen the context in which such extensions appear. We do so in the setup of Poisson suspensions: we take a $\sigma$-finite measure-preserving dynamical system $(X, \mu, T)$ and a compact extension $(X \times G, \mu \otimes m_G, T_\phi)$, then we consider the corresponding Poisson extension $((X \times G)^*, (\mu \otimes m_G)^*, (T_\phi)_*) \overset{}{\to} (X^*, \mu^*, T_*)$. Our results give two different conditions under which that extension is confined. Finally, to show that those conditions are not void, we give an example of a system $(X, \mu, T)$ and a cocycle $\phi$ so that the compact extension $(X \times G, \mu \otimes m_G, T_\phi)$ has an infinite ergodic index.

Poisson-Orlicz norm and infinite Ergodic Theory

Urbanik's theorem for a Poisson process on an infinite measure space (X, A, $\mu$) relates integrability of stochastic integrals to a particular Orlicz function space L$\Phi$ ($\mu$) on which the L1-norm of the Poisson process induces a norm (called Poisson-Orlicz in the sequel) that is shown to be equivalent to the classical gauge and Orlicz norms. We obtain a full characterization of stochastic integrals using difference operators that, together with a simple duality argument, allows to derive Urbanik's theorem as well as an optimal inequality between the Orlicz and the Poisson-Orlicz norm.In a second part, we show that the Poisson-Orlicz norm plays a role in infinite Ergodic Theory where it is seen as an alternative to the L1-norm to identify several dynamical invariants that the latter fails to identify. We also show that, whereas the L1-norm fully characterizes exact endomorphisms (Lin's theorem), Poisson-Orlicz norm fully characterizes remotely infinite endomorphisms.

Generic nonsingular Poisson suspension is of type $III_1$

It is shown that for a dense $G_\delta$-subset of the subgroup of nonsingular transformations (of a standard infinite $\sigma$-finite measure space) whose Poisson suspensions are nonsingular, the corresponding Poisson suspensions are ergodic and of Krieger's type $III_1$.

Nonsingular Poisson Suspensions

The classical Poisson functor associates to every infinite measure preserving dynamical system $(X,\mu,T)$ a probability preserving dynamical system $(X^*,\mu^*,T_*)$ called the Poisson suspension of $T$. In this paper we generalize this construction: a subgroup Aut$_2(X,\mu)$ of $\mu$-nonsingular transformations $T$ of $X$ is specified as the largest subgroup for which $T_*$ is $\mu^*$-nonsingular. Topological structure of this subgroup is studied. We show that a generic element in Aut$_2(X,\mu)$ is ergodic and of Krieger type III$_1$. Let $G$ be a locally compact Polish group and let $A:G\to\text{Aut}_2(X,\mu)$ be a $G$-action. We investigate dynamical properties of the Poisson suspension $A_*$ of $A$ in terms of an affine representation of $G$ associated naturally with $A$. It is shown that $G$ has property (T) if and only if each nonsingular Poisson $G$-action admits an absolutely continuous invariant probability. If $G$ does not have property $(T)$ then for each generating probability $\kappa$ on $G$ and $t>0$, a nonsingular Poisson $G$-action is constructed whose Furstenberg $\kappa$-entropy is $t$.

Ergodic Poisson Splittings

In this paper we study splittings of a Poisson point process which are equivariant under a conservative transformation. We show that, if the Cartesian powers of this transformation are all ergodic, the only ergodic splitting is the obvious one, that is, a collection of independent Poisson processes. We apply this result to the case of a marked Poisson process: under the same hypothesis, the marks are necessarily independent of the point process and i.i.d. Under additional assumptions on the transformation, a further application is derived, giving a full description of the structure of a random measure invariant under the action of the transformation.

Nearly finite Chacon Transformation

We construct an infinite-measure preserving version of Chacon transformation, and prove that it has a property similar to Minimal Self-Joinings in finite measure: its Cartesian powers have as few invariant Radon measures as possible.

Poisson suspensions and Sushis

In this paper, we prove that ergodic point processes with moments of all orders, driven by particular infinite measure preserving transformations, have to be a superposition of shifted Poisson processes. This rigidity result has a lot of implications in terms of joining and disjointness for the corresponding Poisson suspension. In particular, we prove that its ergodic self-joinings are Poisson joinings, which provides an analog, in the Poissonian context, of the GAG property for Gaussian dynamical systems.

Invariant measures for Cartesian powers of Chacon infinite transformation

We describe all boundedly finite measures which are invariant by Cartesian powers of an infinite measure preserving version of Chacon transformation. All such ergodic measures are products of so-called diagonal measures, which are measures generalizing in some way the measures supported on a graph. Unlike what happens in the finite-measure case, this class of diagonal measures is not reduced to measures supported on a graph arising from powers of the transformation: it also contains some weird invariant measures, whose marginals are singular with respect to the measure invariant by the transformation. We derive from these results that the infinite Chacon transformation has trivial centralizer, and has no nontrivial factor. At the end of the paper, we prove a result of independent interest, providing sufficient conditions for an infinite measure preserving dynamical system defined on a Cartesian product to decompose into a direct product of two dynamical systems.

Prime Poisson suspensions

We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for a Poisson suspension to be prime. The proof is based on the Fock space structure of the $L^{2}$-space of the Poisson suspension. We give examples of explicit infinite measure preserving systems, in particular non-singular compact group rotations that give rise to prime Poisson suspensions. We also compare some properties of so far known prime transformations with those of our examples, showing that these examples are new.

Maharam extension and stationary stable processes

We give a second look at stationary stable processes by interpreting the self-similar property at the level of the L\'evy measure as characteristic of a Maharam system. This allows us to derive structural results and their ergodic consequences.

Joining primeness and disjointness from infinitely divisible systems

We show that ergodic dynamical systems generated by infinitely divisible stationary processes are disjoint in the sense of Furstenberg with distally simple systems and systems whose maximal spectral type is singular with respect to the convolution of any two continuous measures.

Poisson-Pinsker factor and infinite measure preserving group actions

We solve the question of the existence of a Poisson-Pinsker factor for conservative ergodic infinite measure preserving action of a countable amenable group by proving the following dichotomy: either it has totally positive Poisson entropy (and is of zero type), or it possesses a Poisson-Pinsker factor. If G is abelian and the entropy positive, the spectrum is absolutely continuous (Lebesgue countable if G=\mathbb{Z}) on the whole L^{2}-space in the first case and in the orthocomplement of the L^{2}-space of the Poisson-Pinsker factor in the second.

Poisson suspensions and entropy for infinite transformations

The Poisson entropy of an infinite-measure-preserving transformation is defined as the Kolmogorov entropy of its Poisson suspension. In this article, we relate Poisson entropy with other definitions of entropy for infinite transformations: For quasi-finite transformations we prove that Poisson entropy coincides with Krengel's and Parry's entropy. In particular, this implies that for null-recurrent Markov chains, the usual formula for the entropy $-\sum q_i p_{i,j}\log p_{i,j}$ holds in any of the definitions for entropy. Poisson entropy dominates Parry's entropy in any conservative transformation. We also prove that relative entropy (in the sense of Danilenko and Rudolph) coincides with the relative Poisson entropy. Thus, for any factor of a conservative transformation, difference of the Krengel's entropy is equal to the difference of the Poisson entropies. In case there exists a factor with zero Poisson entropy, we prove the existence of a maximum (Pinsker) factor with zero Poisson entropy. Together with the preceding results, this answers affirmatively the question raised in arXiv:0705.2148v3 about existence of a Pinsker factor in the sense of Krengel for quasi-finite transformations.

Poisson suspensions and infinite ergodic theory

We investigate ergodic theory of Poisson suspensions. In the process, we establish close connections between finite and infinite measure preserving ergodic theory. Poisson suspensions thus provide a new approach to infinite measure preserving ergodic theory. Fields investigated here are mixing properties, spectral theory, joinings. We also compare Poisson suspensions to the apparently similar looking Gaussian dynamical systems.

Ergodic properties of Poissonian ID processes

We show that a stationary IDp process (i.e., an infinitely divisible stationary process without Gaussian part) can be written as the independent sum of four stationary IDp processes, each of them belonging to a different class characterized by its L\'{e}vy measure. The ergodic properties of each class are, respectively, nonergodicity, weak mixing, mixing of all order and Bernoullicity. To obtain these results, we use the representation of an IDp process as an integral with respect to a Poisson measure, which, more generally, has led us to study basic ergodic properties of these objects.
