Alfvénic high-frequency oscillations at the pedestal of JET plasmas

Long-lived ($\sim 10$ s) high-frequency oscillations (HFOs, $50-450$ kHz) near the plasma edge have been reported and experimentally described in L-H transition studies at JET and AUG. In this work, we show that these HFOs are a general phenomenon observed in various plasma scenarios and compositions (H$^1$, D, D-He$^3$, D-T) under different heating schemes, including pure Ohmic, ICRH and NBI. We demonstrate that dominant axisymmetric ($n=0$) HFOs are Global Alfvén eigenmodes (GAEs) tied to the shear-Alfvén continuum (SAC) minima arising at the plasma edge due to the sharp decrease of the density and increase of the safety factor. This hypothesis is corroborated by the remarkable agreement found between the measured frequencies of HFOs and the SAC minima computed by the ideal MHD code CSMISH for a comprehensive set of JET pulses. This result, along with the fact that HFOs are observed over long time windows and across a variety of plasma scenarios, makes them convenient MHD constraints for accurate equilibrium reconstruction near the edge. In view of this pragmatic application, we derive a first-order analytic expression for the two lowest coupled branches of the $n=0$ SAC, disclosing their dependence (and, consequently, that of the HFOs) on the plasma density, safety factor, and elongation profiles. In addition, we discuss the nature of $n\neq 0$ HFOs observed along with the dominant $n=0$ HFOs.

Stable Deuterium-Tritium burning plasmas with improved confinement in the presence of energetic-ion instabilities

Providing stable and clean energy sources is a necessity for the increasing demands of humanity. Energy produced by fusion reactions, in particular in tokamaks, is a promising path towards that goal. However, there is little experience with plasmas under conditions close to those expected in future fusion reactors, because it requires the fusion of Deuterium (D) and Tritium (T), while most of the experiments are currently performed in pure D. After more than 20 years, the Joint European Torus (JET) has carried out new D-T experiments with the aim of exploring the unique characteristics of burning D-T plasmas, such as the presence of highly energetic ions. A new stable, high confinement and impurity-free D-T regime, with strong reduction of energy losses with respect to D, has been found. Multiscale physics mechanisms critically determine the thermal confinement and the fusion power yield. These crucial achievements importantly contribute to the establishment of fusion energy generation as an alternative to fossil fuels.

Magnetic Phase transitions in Plasmas and Transport Barriers

A model of magnetic phase transitions in plasmas is presented: plasma blobs with pressure excess or defect are dia- or para-magnets and move radially under the influence of the background plasma magnetisation. It is found that magnetic phase separation could be the underlying mechanism of L to H transitions and drive transport barrier formation. Magnetic phase separation and associated pedestal build up, as described here, can be explained by the well known interchange mechanism, now reinterpreted as a magnetisation interchange which remains relevant even when stable or saturated. A testable necessary criterion for the L to H transition is presented.

Criticality of the Grad-Shafranov equation: transport barriers and fragile equilibria

We review criticality theory as a prelude to consideration of criticality of the Grad-Shafranov equation. Novel criticality conditions of ODEs and PDEs are derived, easily evaluated. The possibility that transport barriers are associated with characteristics of the equilibrium equation is explored. We conjecture that equilibrium criticality permits the appearance of new solution branches: the high confinement branch has high poloidal flux gradient in a diamagnetic region of the plasma. Similarly, criticality may lead to loss of solution, which could be related to MHD instability and/or island formation
