The Energy-Momentum-News Complex near Future Null Infinity

We study asymptotically flat vacuum solutions of general relativity in three and four dimensions, with an emphasis on the geometric structures that emerge near null infinity. We construct asymptotic solutions to the three- and four-dimensional Einstein equations near future null infinity, which is a conformal Carroll manifold, starting from the most general Carroll metric data allowed by the Einstein equations. We use a Carroll-covariant version of Bondi--Sachs gauge, whose residual transformations act on the boundary Carroll geometry and shear as boundary diffeomorphisms, Weyl transformations and Carroll boosts. We then define a boundary energy-momentum-news complex at future null infinity by varying a suitably renormalised action with respect to the boundary Carroll metric data and shear. This involves adding boundary terms to the Einstein--Hilbert action on a cut-off surface near future null infinity. The boundary energy-momentum-news complex obeys two relations due to the boundary diffeomorphism and Weyl gauge invariance of the renormalised action. A third relation, due to the Carroll boost, is anomalous, and the corresponding anomaly is obtained from the variation of the renormalised action. Together, these Ward-type identities obeyed by the boundary energy-momentum-news complex lead to a Carroll-covariant generalisation of the Bondi loss equations.

Null fluid/gravity correspondence

We construct a new class of perturbative asymptotically Anti-de Sitter pp-wave spacetimes by performing a long-wavelength expansion of Kaigorodov metrics in arbitrary spacetime dimensions. Holographically, these spacetimes are described by a null fluid hydrodynamic expansion around null states in the conformal field theory, which can be obtained as zero temperature and infinite momentum limits of finite temperature states. Building on this, we explicitly show that special cases of this null fluid/gravity correspondence can be obtained as an ultra-relativistic limit of the usual fluid/gravity correspondence in which the temperature tends to zero while the flow approaches the speed of light. We also extend these results to the context of the blackfold approach in which the corresponding pp-wave spacetimes are asymptotically flat and can be obtained as infinite temperature limits of boosted black branes.

Null matter and the ultrarelativistic origin of hydrodynamics at zero temperature

We uncover a universal sector of relativistic fluid dynamics by taking a novel ultrarelativistic limit in which the temperature tends to zero while the flow simultaneously approaches the speed of light. In this regime, hydrodynamics becomes an effective theory of \emph{null matter}, characterised by a preferred null vector, a preferred scale, and their gradients. We show that this theory of null matter constitutes an example of a hydrodynamic theory that can be linearly stable and causal in an arbitrary choice of frame. The framework developed here for null matter can offer insights into ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, astrophysical phenomena with inherently large Lorentz factors, and the dynamics of black hole horizons.

Quantum carrollian bosonic strings

We study a recently discovered carrollian bosonic string, described classically by a sigma model where both the worldsheet and the target spacetime are carrollian. After fixing the carrollian analogue of the conformal gauge, we determine the Lie algebra of residual gauge symmetries and show it is isomorphic to the three-dimensional extended BMS algebra. We quantise the sigma model \`a la BRST and determine the spectrum of the corresponding string theory by computing the BRST cohomology. In contrast with the usual bosonic string, the spectrum of the carrollian string is finite-dimensional. The cohomology displays Poincar\'e duality and can be interpreted, for a given momentum, as inducing representations for unitary irreducible representations of the 26-dimensional Carroll group. Furthermore we interpret (most of) the cohomology as deformations of the spacetime carrollian structure augmented by the Kalb--Ramond field to which the carrollian string couples.

Boundary Energy-Momentum Tensors for Asymptotically Flat Spacetimes

We consider 3D and 4D asymptotically flat spacetimes near future null infinity endowed with the most general allowed Carroll geometry. We define a boundary energy-momentum tensor by varying the on-shell action with respect to the Carroll metric data. This requires adding counterterms to the Einstein-Hilbert action. We show that, in 4D, the shear is on par with the Carroll metric data. Their combined response defines a boundary energy-momentum-news complex whose diffeomorphism Ward identity is equivalent to the Bondi mass and angular momentum loss equations. Weyl invariance leads to an identity for the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, and local Carroll boosts are anomalous in 3D and in 4D.

Strings near black holes are Carrollian -- Part II

We study classical closed bosonic strings probing the near-horizon region of a non-extremal black hole and show that this corresponds to understanding string theory in the Carroll regime. This is done by first performing a Carroll expansion and then a near-horizon expansion of a closed relativistic string, subsequently showing that they agree. Concretely, we expand the phase space action in powers of $c^2$, where $c$ is the speed of light, assuming that the target space admits a string Carroll expansion (where two directions are singled out) and show that there exist two different Carroll strings: a magnetic and an electric string. The magnetic string has a Lorentzian worldsheet, whereas the worldsheet of the electric string is Carrollian. The geometry near the horizon of a four-dimensional (4D) Schwarzschild black hole takes the form of a string Carroll expansion (a 2D Rindler space fibred over a 2-sphere). We show that the solution space of relativistic strings near the horizon bifurcates and the two sectors precisely match with the magnetic/electric Carroll strings with an appropriate target space. Magnetic Carroll strings near a black hole shrink to a point on the two-sphere and either follow null geodesics or turn into folded strings on the 2D Rindler spacetime. Electric Carroll strings wrap the two-sphere and follow a massive geodesic in the Rindler space. Finally, we show that 4D non-extremal Kerr and Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes also admit string Carroll expansions near their outer horizons, indicating that our formulation extends to generic non-extremal black holes.

Non-relativistic expansion of open strings and D-branes

We expand the relativistic open bosonic string in powers of $1/c^2$ where $c$ is the speed of light. We perform this expansion to next-to-leading order in $1/c^2$ and relate our results to known descriptions of non-relativistic open strings obtained by taking limits. Just as for closed strings the non-relativistic expansion is well-defined if the open string winds a circle in the target space. This direction must satisfy Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is shown that the endpoints of the open string behave as Bargmann particles in the non-relativistic regime. These open strings end on nrD$p$-branes with $p\le 24$. When these nrD$p$-branes do not fluctuate they correspond to $(p+1)$-dimensional Newton--Cartan submanifolds of the target space. When we include fluctuations and worldvolume gauge fields their dynamics is described by a non-relativistic version of the DBI action whose form we derive from symmetry considerations. The worldvolume gauge field and scalar field of a nrD$24$-brane make up the field content of Galilean electrodynamics (GED), and the effective theory on the nrD$24$-brane is precisely a non-linear version of GED. We generalise these results to actions for any nrD$p$-brane by demanding that they have the same target space gauge symmetries that the non-relativistic open and closed string actions have. Finally, we show that the nrD$p$-brane action is transverse T-duality covariant. Our results agree with the findings of Gomis, Yan and Yu in arXiv:2007.01886.

Massive carrollian fields at timelike infinity

Motivated by flat space holography, we demonstrate that massive spin-$s$ fields in Minkowski space near timelike infinity are massive carrollian fields on the carrollian counterpart of anti-de Sitter space called $\mathsf{Ti}$. Its isometries form the Poincar\'e group, and we construct the carrollian spin-$s$ fields using the method of induced representations. We provide a dictionary between massive carrollian fields on $\mathsf{Ti}$ and massive fields in Minkowski space, as well as to fields in the conformal primary basis used in celestial holography. We show that the symmetries of the carrollian structure naturally account for the BMS charges underlying the soft graviton theorem. Finally, we initiate a discussion of the correspondence between massive scattering amplitudes and carrollian correlation functions on $\mathsf{Ti}$, and introduce physical definitions of detector operators using a suitable notion of conserved carrollian energy-momentum tensor.

Strings near black holes are Carrollian

We demonstrate that strings near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole, when viewed by a stationary observer at infinity, probe a string Carroll geometry, where the effective lightspeed is given by the distance from the horizon. We expand the Polyakov action in powers of this lightspeed to find a theory of Carrollian strings. We show that the string shrinks to a point to leading order near the horizon, which follows a null geodesic in a two-dimensional Rindler space. At the next-to-leading order the string oscillates in the embedding fields associated with the near-horizon two-sphere.

Carrollian fluids and spontaneous breaking of boost symmetry

In the hydrodynamic regime, field theories typically have their boost symmetry spontaneously broken due to the presence of a thermal rest frame although the associated Goldstone field does not acquire independent dynamics. We show that this is not the case for Carrollian field theories where the boost Goldstone field plays a central role. This allows us to give a first-principles derivation of the equilibrium currents and dissipative effects of Carrollian fluids. We also demonstrate that the limit of vanishing speed of light of relativistic fluids is a special case of this class of Carrollian fluids. Our results shine light on the thermodynamic properties and thermal partition functions of Carrollian field theories.

A coupling prescription for post-Newtonian corrections in Quantum Mechanics

The interplay between quantum theory and general relativity remains one of the main challenges of modern physics. A renewed interest in the low-energy limit is driven by the prospect of new experiments that could probe this interface. Here we develop a covariant framework for expressing post-Newtonian corrections to Schr\"odinger's equation on arbitrary gravitational backgrounds based on a $1/c^2$ expansion of Lorentzian geometry, where $c$ is the speed of light. Our framework provides a generic coupling prescription of quantum systems to gravity that is valid in the intermediate regime between Newtonian gravity and General Relativity, and that retains the focus on geometry. At each order in $1/c^2$ this produces a nonrelativistic geometry to which quantum systems at that order couple. By considering the gauge symmetries of both the nonrelativistic geometries and the $1/c^2$ expansion of the complex Klein--Gordon field, we devise a prescription that allows us to derive the Schr\"odinger equation and its post-Newtonian corrections on a gravitational background order-by-order in $1/c^2$. We also demonstrate that these results can be obtained from a $1/c^2$ expansion of the complex Klein--Gordon Lagrangian. We illustrate our methods by performing the $1/c^2$ expansion of the Kerr metric up to $\mathcal{O}(c^{-2})$, which leads to a special case of the Hartle--Thorne metric. The associated Schr\"odinger equation captures novel and potentially measurable effects.

Ideal fracton superfluids

We investigate the thermodynamics of equilibrium thermal states and their near-equilibrium dynamics in systems with fractonic symmetries in arbitrary curved space. By explicitly gauging the fracton algebra we obtain the geometry and gauge fields that field theories with conserved dipole moment couple to. We use the resultant fracton geometry to show that it is not possible to construct an equilibrium partition function for global thermal states unless part of the fractonic symmetries is spontaneously broken. This leads us to introduce two classes of fracton superfluids with conserved energy and momentum, namely $p$-wave and $s$-wave fracton superfluids. The latter phase is an Aristotelian superfluid at ideal order but with a velocity constraint and can be split into two separate regimes: the U(1) fracton superfluid and the pinned $s$-wave superfluid regimes. For each of these classes and regimes we formulate a hydrodynamic expansion and study the resultant modes. We find distinctive features of each of these phases and regimes at ideal order in gradients, without introducing dissipative effects. In particular we note the appearance of a sound mode for $s$-wave fracton superfluids. We show that previous work on fracton hydrodynamics falls into these classes. Finally, we study ultra-dense $p$-wave fracton superfluids with a large kinetic mass in addition to studying the thermodynamics of ideal Aristotelian superfluids.

Nonrelativistic Approximations of Closed Bosonic String Theory

We further develop the string $1/c^2$ expansion of closed bosonic string theory, where $c$ is the speed of light. The expansion will be performed up to and including the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). We show that the next-to-leading order (NLO) theory is equal to the Gomis--Ooguri string, generalised to a curved target space, provided the target space geometry admits a certain class of co-dimension-2 foliations. We compute the energy of the string up to NNLO for a flat target space with a circle that must be wound by the string, and we show that it agrees with the $1/c^2$ expansion of the relativistic energy. We also compute the algebra of Noether charges for a flat target space and show that this matches order-by-order with an appropriate expansion of the Poincar\'e algebra, which at NLO gives the string Bargmann algebra. Finally, we expand the phase space action, which allows us to perform the Dirac procedure and pass to the quantum theory. It turns out that the Poisson brackets change at each order, and we show that the normal ordering constant of the relativistic theory, which does not depend on $c$, can be reproduced by the NLO and NNLO theories.

The gauging procedure and carrollian gravity

We discuss a gauging procedure that allows us to construct lagrangians that dictate the dynamics of an underlying Cartan geometry. In a sense to be made precise in the paper, the starting datum in the gauging procedure is a Klein pair corresponding to a homogeneous space. What the gauging procedure amounts to is the construction of a Cartan geometry modelled on that Klein geometry, with the gauge field defining a Cartan connection. The lagrangian itself consists of all gauge-invariant top-forms constructed from the Cartan connection and its curvature. After demonstrating that this procedure produces four-dimensional General Relativity upon gauging Minkowski spacetime, we proceed to gauge all four-dimensional maximally symmetric carrollian spaces: Carroll, (anti-)de Sitter--Carroll and the lightcone. For the first three of these spaces, our lagrangians generalise earlier first-order lagrangians. The resulting theories of carrollian gravity all take the same form, which seems to be a manifestation of model mutation at the level of the lagrangians. The odd one out, the lightcone, is not reductive and this means that although the equations of motion take the same form as in the other cases, the geometric interpretation is different. For all carrollian theories of gravity we obtain analogues of the Gauss--Bonnet, Pontryagin and Nieh--Yan topological terms, as well as two additional terms that are intrinsically carrollian and seem to have no lorentzian counterpart. Since we gauge the theories from scratch this work also provides a no-go result for the electric carrollian theory in a first-order formulation.

Carrollian and celestial spaces at infinity

We show that the geometry of the asymptotic infinities of Minkowski spacetime (in $d+1$ dimensions) is captured by homogeneous spaces of the Poincar\'e group: the blow-ups of spatial (Spi) and timelike (Ti) infinities in the sense of Ashtekar--Hansen and a novel space Ni fibering over $\mathscr{I}$. We embed these spaces \`a la Penrose--Rindler into a pseudo-euclidean space of signature $(d+1,2)$ as orbits of the same Poincar\'e subgroup of O$(d+1,2)$. We describe the corresponding Klein pairs and determine their Poincar\'e-invariant structures: a carrollian structure on Ti, a pseudo-carrollian structure on Spi and a "doubly-carrollian" structure on Ni. We give additional geometric characterisations of these spaces as grassmannians of affine hyperplanes in Minkowski spacetime: Spi is the (double cover of the) grassmannian of affine lorentzian hyperplanes; Ti is the grassmannian of affine spacelike hyperplanes and Ni fibers over the grassmannian of affine null planes, which is $\mathscr{I}$. We exhibit Ni as the fibred product of $\mathscr{I}$ and the lightcone over the celestial sphere. We also show that Ni is the total space of the bundle of scales of the conformal carrollian structure on $\mathscr{I}$ and show that the symmetry algebra of its doubly-carrollian structure is isomorphic to the symmetry algebra of the conformal carrollian structure on $\mathscr{I}$; that is, the BMS algebra. We show how to reconstruct Minkowski spacetime from any of its asymptotic geometries, by establishing that points in Minkowski spacetime parametrise certain lightcone cuts in the asymptotic geometries. We include an appendix comparing with (A)dS and observe that the de Sitter groups have no homogeneous spaces which could play the r\^ole that the celestial sphere plays in flat space holography.

Fractons, dipole symmetries and curved spacetime

We study complex scalar theories with dipole symmetry and uncover a no-go theorem that governs the structure of such theories and which, in particular, reveals that a Gaussian theory with linearly realised dipole symmetry must be Carrollian. The gauging of the dipole symmetry via the Noether procedure gives rise to a scalar gauge field and a spatial symmetric tensor gauge field. We construct a worldline theory of mobile objects that couple gauge invariantly to these gauge fields. We systematically develop the canonical theory of a dynamical symmetric tensor gauge field and arrive at scalar charge gauge theories in both Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formalism. We compute the dispersion relation of the modes of this gauge theory, and we point out an analogy with partially massless gravitons. It is then shown that these fractonic theories couple to Aristotelian geometry, which is a non-Lorentzian geometry characterised by the absence of boost symmetries. We generalise previous results by coupling fracton theories to curved space and time. We demonstrate that complex scalar theories with dipole symmetry can be coupled to general Aristotelian geometries as long as the symmetric tensor gauge field remains a background field. The coupling of the scalar charge gauge theory requires a Lagrange multiplier that restricts the Aristotelian geometries.

On the Non-Relativistic Expansion of Closed Bosonic Strings

We develop a novel approach to non-relativistic closed bosonic string theory that is based on a string $1/c^2$ expansion of the relativistic string, where $c$ is the speed of light. This approach has the benefit that one does not need to take a limit of a string in a near-critical Kalb-Ramond background. The $1/c^2$-expanded Polyakov action at next-to-leading order reproduces the known action of non-relativistic string theory provided that the target space obeys an appropriate foliation constraint. We compute the spectrum in a flat target space, with one circle direction that is wound by the string, up to next-to-leading order and show that it reproduces the spectrum of the Gomis-Ooguri string.

Non-Boost Invariant Fluid Dynamics

We consider uncharged fluids without any boost symmetry on an arbitrary curved background and classify all allowed transport coefficients up to first order in derivatives. We assume rotational symmetry and we use the entropy current formalism. The curved background geometry in the absence of boost symmetry is called absolute or Aristotelian spacetime. We present a closed-form expression for the energy-momentum tensor in Landau frame which splits into three parts: a dissipative (10), a hydrostatic non-dissipative (2) and a non-hydrostatic non-dissipative part (4), where in parenthesis we have indicated the number of allowed transport coefficients. The non-hydrostatic non-dissipative transport coefficients can be thought of as the generalization of coefficients that would vanish if we were to restrict to linearized perturbations and impose the Onsager relations. For the two hydrostatic and the four non-hydrostatic non-dissipative transport coefficients we present a Lagrangian description. Finally when we impose scale invariance, thus restricting to Lifshitz fluids, we find 7 dissipative, 1 hydrostatic and 2 non-hydrostatic non-dissipative transport coefficients.
