Symmetry breaking and non-ergodicity in a driven-dissipative ensemble of multi-level atoms in a cavity

Dissipative light-matter systems can display emergent collective behavior. Here, we report a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetry-breaking phase transition in a system of multi-level $^{87}$Rb atoms strongly coupled to a weakly driven two-mode optical cavity. In the symmetry-broken phase, non-ergodic dynamics manifests in the emergence of multiple stationary states with disjoint basins of attraction. This feature enables the amplification of a small atomic population imbalance into a characteristic macroscopic cavity transmission signal. Our experiment does not only showcase strongly dissipative atom-cavity systems as platforms for probing non-trivial collective many-body phenomena, but also highlights their potential for hosting technological applications in the context of sensing, density classification, and pattern retrieval dynamics within associative memories.

Collective atom-cavity coupling and non-linear dynamics with atoms with multilevel ground states

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the collective coupling between atoms with multilevel ground state manifolds and an optical cavity mode. In our setup the cavity field optically pumps populations among the ground states. The ensuing dynamics can be conveniently described by means of an effective dynamical atom-cavity coupling strength that depends on the occupation of the individual states and their coupling strengths with the cavity mode. This leads to a dynamical backaction of the atomic populations on the atom-cavity coupling strength which results in a non-exponential relaxation dynamics. We experimentally observe this effect with laser-cooled $^{87}$Rb atoms, for which we monitor the collective normal-mode splitting in real time. Our results show that the multilevel structure of electronic ground states can significantly alter the relaxation behavior in atom-cavity settings as compared to ensembles of two-level atoms.

Real-time detection of Rydberg state dynamics of cold atoms using an optical cavity

This work reports on the real-time detection of internal-state dynamics of cold Rb$^{87}$ atoms being excited to the $30D_{5/2}$ Rydberg state via two-photon excitation. A mesoscopic cloud of atoms is overlapped with the mode volume of a confocal optical cavity and optically pumped by two laser beams transverse to the cavity axis. The excitation to Rydberg states changes the collective atom-cavity coupling, which is detected by monitoring the light transmitted through the cavity while being weakly driven. In addition to the damped coherent excitation dynamics and the decay back to the ground state, the data show a superradiant enhancement of the black-body radiation induced transitions from the $30D_{5/2}$ state to neighboring Rydberg states. Furthermore, they show a density dependent mitigation of the superradiant decay which is attributed to long range dipole-dipole interactions between atoms in the involved Rydberg states. These results contribute to solving a recent controversy on the interplay between BBR-induced superradiance and Rydberg atom interactions.

Photon-antibunching in the fluorescence of statistical ensembles of emitters at an optical nanofiber-tip

This proposal investigates the photon-statistics of light emitted by a statistical ensemble of cold atoms excited by the near-field of an optical nanofiber tip. Dipole-dipole interactions of atoms at such short distance from each other suppress the simultaneous emission of more than one photon and lead to antibunching of photons. We consider a mean atom number on the order of one and deal with a poissonian mixture of one and two atoms including dipole-dipole interactions and collective decay. Time tracks of the atomic states are simulated in quantum Monte Carlo simulations from which the $g^{(2)}$-photon autocorrelation function is derived. The general results can be applied to any statistical ensemble of emitters that are interacting by dipole-dipole interactions.
