Conservation laws and exact solutions of a nonlinear acoustics equation by classical symmetry reduction

Symmetries and conservation laws are studied for a generalized Westervelt equation which is a nonlinear partial differential equation modelling the propagation of sound waves in a compressible medium. This nonlinear wave equation is widely used in nonlinear acoustics and it is especially important in biomedical applications such as ultra-sound imaging in human tissue. Modern methods are applied to uncover point symmetries and conservation laws that can lead to useful developments concerning solutions and their properties. A complete classification of point symmetries is shown for the arbitrary function. Local low-order conservation laws related to net mass of sound waves are obtained by the multiplier method. Two potential systems are derived yielding potential symmetries and nonlocal conservation laws. For the physical case interesting for this equation, travelling wave solutions are studied leading to shock waves.

Conservation laws for a generalized seventh order KdV equation

In this paper, by applying the multiplier method we obtain a complete classification of low-order local conservation laws for a generalized seventh-order KdV equation depending on seven arbitrary nonzero parameters. We apply the Lie method in order to classify all point symmetries admitted by the equation in terms of the arbitrary parameters. We find that there are no special cases of the parameters for which the equation admits extra symmetries, other than those that can be found by inspection (scaling symmetry and space and time translation symmetries). We consider the reduced ordinary differential equations and we determined all integrating factors of the reduced equation from the combined $x$- and $t$- translation symmetries. Finally, we observe that all integrating factors arise by reduction of the low-order multipliers of the generalized seventh-order KdV equation.

Lie symmetries, conservation laws and exact solutions of a generalized quasilinear KdV equation with degenerate dispersion

We provide a complete classification of point symmetries and low-order local conservation laws of the generalized quasilinear KdV equation in terms of the arbitrary function. The corresponding interpretation of symmetry transformation groups are given. In addition, a physical description of the conserved quantities is included. Finally, few travelling wave solutions have been obtained.

Travelling wave solutions on a non-zero background for the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation

For the generalized $p$-power Korteweg-de Vries equation, all non-periodic travelling wave solutions with non-zero boundary conditions are explicitly classified for all integer powers $p\geq 1$. These solutions are shown to consist of: bright solitary waves and static humps on a non-zero background for odd $p$; dark solitary waves on a non-zero background and kink waves for even $p$ in the defocusing case; pairs of bright/dark solitary waves on a non-zero background, and also bright and dark heavy-tail waves (with power decay) on a non-zero background, for even $p$ in the focusing case. An explicit physical parameterization is given for each type of solutionin terms of the wave speed $c$, background size $b$, and wave height/depth $h$. The allowed kinematic region in $(c,b)$ as well as in $(h,b)$ for existence of the solutions is derived, and other main kinematic features are discussed. Explicit formulas are presented in the integrable cases $p=1,2$, and in the higher power cases $p=3,4$.

Topological charges and conservation laws involving an arbitrary function of time for dynamical PDEs

Dynamical PDEs that have a spatial divergence form possess conservation laws that involve an arbitrary function of time. In one spatial dimension, such conservation laws are shown to describe the presence of an $x$-independent source/sink; in two and more spatial dimensions, they are shown to describe a topological charge. Two applications are demonstrated. First, a topological charge gives rise to an associated spatial potential system, allowing nonlocal conservation laws and symmetries to be found for a given dynamical PDE. Second, when a conserved density involves derivatives of an arbitrary function of time in addition to the function itself, its integral on any given spatial domain reduces to a boundary integral, which in some situations can place restrictions on initial/boundary data for which the dynamical PDE will be well-posed. Several examples of nonlinear PDEs from applied mathematics and integrable system theory are used to illustrate these new results.

Line-solitons, line-shocks, and conservation laws of a universal KP-like equation in 2+1 dimensions

A universal KP-like equation in 2+1 dimensions, which models general nonlinear wave phenomena exhibiting p-power nonlinearity, dispersion, and small transversality, is studied. Special cases include the integrable KP (Kadomtsev-Petviashvili) equation and it is modified version, as well as their p-power generalizations. Two main results are obtained. First, all low-order conservation laws are derived, including ones that arise for special powers p. The conservation laws comprise momenta, energy, and Galilean-type quantities, as well as topological charges. Their physical meaning and properties are discussed. Second, all line-soliton solutions are obtained in an explicit form. A parameterization is given using the speed and the direction angle of the line-soliton, and the allowed kinematic region is determined in terms of these parameters. Basic kinematical properties of the line-solitons are also discussed. These properties differ significantly compared to those for KP line-solitons and their p-power generalizations. A line-shock solution is shown to emerge when a special limiting case of the kinematic region is considered.

Conservation laws and line soliton solutions of a family of modified KP equations

A family of modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations (mKP) in 2+1 dimensions is studied. This family includes the integrable mKP equation when the coefficients of the nonlinear terms and the transverse dispersion term satisfy an algebraic condition. The explicit line soliton solution and all conservation laws of low order are derived for all equations in the family and compared to their counterparts in the integrable case.

Accelerating dynamical peakons and their behaviour

A wide class of nonlinear dispersive wave equations are shown to possess a novel type of peakon solution in which the amplitude and speed of the peakon are time-dependent. These novel dynamical peakons exhibit a wide variety of different behaviours for their amplitude, speed, and acceleration, including an oscillatory amplitude and constant speed which describes a peakon breather. Examples are presented of families of nonlinear dispersive wave equations that illust rate various interesting behaviours, such as asymptotic travelling-wave peakons, dissipating/anti-dissipating peakons, direction-reversing peakons, runaway and blow up peakons, among others.

A general family of multi-peakon equations and their properties

A general family of peakon equations is introduced, involving two arbitrary functions of the wave amplitude and the wave gradient. This family contains all of the known breaking wave equations, including the integrable ones: Camassa-Holm equation, Degasperis-Procesi equation, Novikov equation, and FORQ/modified Camassa-Holm equation. One main result is to show that all of the equations in the general family possess weak solutions given by multi-peakons which are a linear superposition of peakons with time-dependent amplitudes and positions. In particular, neither an integrability structure nor a Hamiltonian structure is needed to derive $N$-peakon weak solutions for arbitrary $N>1$. As a further result, single peakon travelling-wave solutions are shown to exist under a simple condition on one of the two arbitrary functions in the general family of equations, and when this condition fails, generalized single peakon solutions that have a time-dependent amplitude and a time-dependent speed are shown to exist. Wave breaking criteria are outlined for this general family of peakon equations. An interesting generalization of the Camassa-Holm and FORQ/modified Camassa-Holm equations is obtained by deriving the most general subfamily of peakon equations that possess the Hamiltonian structure shared by the Camassa-Holm and FORQ/modified Camassa-Holm equations. Peakon travelling-wave solutions and their features, including a variational formulation (minimizer problem), are derived for these generalized equations. A final main result is that $2$-peakon weak solutions are investigated and shown to exhibit several novel kinds of behaviour, including the formation of a bound pair consisting of a peakon and an anti-peakon that have a maximum finite separation.

Conserved norms and related conservation laws for multi-peakon equations

All nonlinear dispersive wave equations in the general class $m_t+f(u,u_x)m+(g(u,u_x)m)_x =0$ are known to possess multi-peakon weak solutions. A classification is presented for families of multi-peakon equations in this class that possess conserved momentum; conserved $H^1$ norm of $u$; conserved $H^2$ norm of $u$; conserved $L^2$ norm of $m$; related conservation laws. The results yield, among others, two interesting wide families of equations: $m_t + 2u_x h(u,u_x)m + u (h(u,u_x)m)_x=0$ for which the $H^1$ norm of $u$ is conserved; $m_t -\tfrac{1}{2}u_x h'(u)m + (h(u)m)_x =0$ for which the $L^2$ norm of $m$ is conserved. The overlap of these two families yields a singular equation which is nevertheless found to possess both smooth solitary wave solutions and peakon travelling wave solutions.

Conservation laws and symmetries of radial generalized nonlinear $p$-Laplacian evolution equations

A class of generalized nonlinear p-Laplacian evolution equations is studied. These equations model radial diffusion-reaction processes in $n\geq 1$ dimensions, where the diffusivity depends on the gradient of the flow. For this class, all local conservation laws of low-order and all Lie symmetries are derived. The physical meaning of the conservation laws is discussed, and one of the conservation laws is used to show that the nonlinear equation can be mapped invertibly into a linear equation by a hodograph transformation in certain cases. The symmetries are used to derive exact group-invariant solutions from solvable three-dimensional subgroups of the full symmetry group, which yields a direct reduction of the nonlinear equation to a quadrature. The physical and analytical properties of these exact solutions are explored, some of which describe moving interfaces and Green's functions.

Conservation laws and symmetries of a generalized Kawahara equation

The generalized Kawahara equation $u_t=a(t) u_{xxxxx} +b(t)u_{xxx} +c(t)f(u) u_x$ appears in many physical applications. A complete classification of low-order conservation laws and point symmetries is obtained for this equation, which includes as a special case the usual Kawahara equation $u_t = αu u_x+βu^2u_x +γu_{xxx}+μu_{xxxxx}$. A general connection between conservation laws and symmetries for the generalized Kawahara equation is derived through the Hamiltonian structure of this equation and its relationship to Noether's theorem using a potential formulation.

A nonlinear generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation with peakon solutions

A nonlinearly generalized Camassa-Holm equation, depending an arbitrary nonlinearity power $p \neq 0$, is considered. This equation reduces to the Camassa-Holm equation when $p=1$ and shares one of the Hamiltonian structures of the Camassa-Holm equation. Two main results are obtained. A classification of point symmetries is presented and a peakon solution is derived, for all powers $p \neq 0$.
