Mixing Rates for Analytic Observables: Toral Endomorphisms and Anosov Blaschke Deformations

We analyze exponential mixing for analytic observables and show that mixing at a double exponential rate occurs for genuinely nonlinear systems. Neither its presence nor its sharp exponent is stable under arbitrarily small area-preserving perturbations in the real-analytic topology. We construct two families of area-preserving Anosov Blaschke product diffeomorphisms that converge in the real-analytic topology to the same hyperbolic toral automorphism. For nonzero parameters, both deformations are topologically conjugate to the linear model but not $C^1$-conjugate. For all nonzero parameter values, the maps in the first family are mixing at a double exponential rate with the same sharp exponent, strictly smaller than that of the linear map. The sharp exponent is therefore not lower semicontinuous at the linear map. In the second family, mixing at a double exponential rate is lost altogether, although the maps remain exponentially mixing. We also establish double exponential bounds for every ergodic toral endomorphism and uniform bounds of the same type for totally ergodic higher-rank toral actions. Our method combines the Fourier escape argument with Koopman operator estimates from a Hilbert space of analytic functions to its dual space of hyperfunctions.

Mixing for Free Semigroup Actions of Blaschke Products on the Circle

We study mixing at a double exponential rate on analytic observables and ask how much of a map is remembered by its rate of mixing. For finite Blaschke products of the circle with a fixed point in the unit disk, and for the free semigroup actions they generate, we give a complete classification: the rate of mixing (no mixing, exponential, or double exponential) is determined by the multiplier of the generators at that fixed point, the invariant measure being the harmonic measure with a pole there. In the double exponential regime, the exponent equals $\log p$, where $p$ is the minimal local degree of the generators at the fixed point, and we show that this value is sharp. Consequently, the rate is not rigid: it is not stable under $C^1$-perturbations and does not imply $C^1$-conjugacy to affine models. Rigidity holds when the exponent is maximal for the degree: a map of degree $q$ whose exponent attains $\log q$ is Möbius conjugate to an affine model.

Difference equations in the complex plane: quasiclassical asymptotics and Berry phase

We study solutions to the difference equation $Ψ(z+h)=M(z)Ψ(z)$ where $z$ is a complex variable, $h>0$ is a parameter, and $M:\mathbb{C}\mapsto SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ is a given analytic function. We describe the asymptotics of its analytic solutions as $h\to 0$. The asymptotic formulas contain an analog of the geometric (Berry) phase well-known in the quasiclassical analysis of differential equations.
