Learning to Sync at the Edge: Client-Side Adaptive Synchronization for Federated Learning

The scalability and performance of edge federated learning are fundamentally constrained by synchronization bottlenecks. Clients operate under heterogeneous compute, time-varying communication conditions, and, in some settings, privacy constraints, yet synchronization is often still handled with fixed schedules. However, synchronization decisions are often made outside the client, even though the client directly observes local progress, resource state, and communication conditions. We present a client-side reinforcement learning synchronization framework in which each client decides during training whether to upload, download, synchronize bidirectionally, or defer communication. The framework places a lightweight scheduler alongside the local model and formulates synchronization as a resource-aware control problem driven by local learning and system state. We study this framework on two representative edge workloads, spatiotemporal traffic forecasting and image classification. Across both settings, adaptive client-side synchronization improves the accuracy-cost trade-off, reducing system cost in traffic forecasting while maintaining competitive cost and improving final accuracy in image classification. We also consider privacy-constrained settings, where synchronization must account for not only latency and energy but also privacy expenditure. Overall, our results show that synchronization in edge federated learning is better treated as an adaptive client-side control problem than only as a server-side coordination mechanism.

Architecture for Multi-Unmanned Aerial Vehicles based Autonomous Precision Agriculture Systems

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in precision agriculture has seen a huge increase recently. As such, systems that aim to apply various algorithms on the field need a structured framework of abstractions. This paper defines the various tasks of the UAVs in precision agriculture and model them into an architectural framework. The presented architecture is built on the context that there will be minimal physical intervention to do the tasks defined with multiple coordinated and cooperative UAVs. Various tasks such as image processing, path planning, communication, data acquisition, and field mapping are employed in the architecture to provide an efficient system. Besides, different limitation for applying Multi-UAVs in precision agriculture has been considered in designing the architecture. The architecture provides an autonomous end-to-end solution, starting from mission planning, data acquisition and image processing framework that is highly efficient and can enable farmers to comprehensively deploy UAVs onto their lands. Simulation and field tests shows that the architecture offers a number of advantages that include fault-tolerance, robustness, developer and user-friendliness.

Geofenced Unmanned Aerial Robotic Defender for Deer Detection and Deterrence (GUARD)

Wildlife-induced crop damage, particularly from deer, threatens agricultural productivity. Traditional deterrence methods often fall short in scalability, responsiveness, and adaptability to diverse farmland environments. This paper presents an integrated unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system designed for autonomous wildlife deterrence, developed as part of the Farm Robotics Challenge. Our system combines a YOLO-based real-time computer vision module for deer detection, an energy-efficient coverage path planning algorithm for efficient field monitoring, and an autonomous charging station for continuous operation of the UAV. In collaboration with a local Minnesota farmer, the system is tailored to address practical constraints such as terrain, infrastructure limitations, and animal behavior. The solution is evaluated through a combination of simulation and field testing, demonstrating robust detection accuracy, efficient coverage, and extended operational time. The results highlight the feasibility and effectiveness of drone-based wildlife deterrence in precision agriculture, offering a scalable framework for future deployment and extension.

What We Know So Far: Artificial Intelligence in African Healthcare

Healthcare in Africa is a complex issue influenced by many factors including poverty, lack of infrastructure, and inadequate funding. However, Artificial intelligence (AI) applied to healthcare, has the potential to transform healthcare in Africa by improving the accuracy and efficiency of diagnosis, enabling earlier detection of diseases, and supporting the delivery of personalized medicine. This paper reviews the current state of how AI Algorithms can be used to improve diagnostics, treatment, and disease monitoring, as well as how AI can be used to improve access to healthcare in Africa as a low-resource setting and discusses some of the critical challenges and opportunities for its adoption. As such, there is a need for a well-coordinated effort by the governments, private sector, healthcare providers, and international organizations to create sustainable AI solutions that meet the unique needs of the African healthcare system.
