Tests of the parametrizations of Fragmentation Functions using data on inclusive pion and kaon production in unpolarized $pp$ collisions from the STAR collaboration and at the NICA project

The goal of this study is to check which, if any, of the published versions of the pion and kaon fragmentation functions is compatible with the STAR data on semi-inclusive pion and kaon production in proton-proton collisions, and on the basis of this analysis to make reliable predictions for the $p_T$ spectra of the pions and kaons in inclusive pion and kaon production at the future NICA proton-proton collider. The calculations are carried out in next-to-leading order (NLO) of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD), using the well tested CTEQ6 parton distributions. We consider the following pion and kaon fragmentation functions (FFs) -- DSEHS-14, DSEHS-17, LSS-15, HKNS-07 and AKK-08. Our analysis shows that within the experimental errors all tested sets of fragmentation functions provide a good fit to STAR data at the c.m. energy $ \sqrt{S} = 200\, {\rm GeV} $, and the best ones are both LSS-15 and DSEHS-14 for pions and DSEHS-17 for kaons. From comparison of the LO and NLO results it is clear that the latter fit data much better, specially in the region of small $p_T$. The NLO cross sections are also less scale-$Q^2$ dependent, where $p_T/2\leqslant Q \leqslant 2p_T$, than the LO ones. In order to make predictions for NICA energies, we compare the NLO pQCD results with the existing experimental BES STAR data on semi-inclusive hadron production in the most peripheral Au+Au collisions where the nuclear effects can be neglected. The comparison for lower energy scales, like at NICA, shows that a purely pQCD approach is inadequate and suggests the necessity to take into account also higher-order effects of initial-state soft-gluon radiation. Nevertheless, these data on the $p_T$ spectra of $\pi^+$, $K^+$ and also the ratios $\pi^-/\pi^+$ and $K^-/K^+$ seem favour LSS-15 and DSEHS-14 FFs for pions and DSEHS-17 for kaons, similarly as at the energy scale $ \sqrt{S} = 200\, {\rm GeV} $.

New study of the Boer-Mulders function: Implications for the quark and hadron transverse momenta

In series of papers the Boer-Mulders function for a given quark flavour has been extracted: (i) from data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, using the simplifying, but theoretically inconsistent, assumption that it is proportional to the Sivers function for each quark flavour and (ii) from data on Drell-Yan reactions. In earlier papers, using the semi-inclusive deep inelastic COMPASS deuteron data on the $\langle\cos\phi_h\rangle$ and $\langle\cos 2 \phi_h\rangle$ asymmetries, we extracted the collinear $x_{_{\!B}}$ dependence of the Boer-Mulders function for the sum of the valence quarks $Q_V=u_V + d_V$ using a small number of model dependent assumptions and found a significant disagreement with the analysis in (i). In the present paper, we provide a more complete analysis of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering reaction, including a discussion of higher twist and interaction-dependent terms, and also a comparison with the Boer-Mulders function extracted from data on the Drell-Yan reaction. We confirm that the proportionality relation of the BM function to the Sivers function, for each quark flavour, fails badly, but find that it holds rather well if applied to the nonsinglet valence-quark combination, $Q_V$. We also find good agreement with the results of the Drell-Yan analysis. Furthermore, we obtain interesting information on the quark transverse momentum densities in the nucleon and on the hadron transverse momentum dependence in quark fragmentation.

Towards a model independent extraction of the Boer-Mulders function

At present, the Boer-Mulders function for a given quark flavour has been extracted from data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using the simplifying, but theoretically inconsistent, assumption that it is proportional to the Sivers function for each quark flavour. In this paper, using the latest semi-inclusive deep inelastic COMPASS deuteron data on the $\langle\cos\phi_h\rangle$ and $\langle\cos 2 \phi_h\rangle$ asymmetries we extract the collinear $x_B$-dependence of the Boer-Mulders function for the sum of the valence quarks $Q_V=u_V + d_V$ in an essentially model independent way, and find a significant disagreement with the published results. Our analysis also yields interesting information on the transverse momentum dependence of the unpolarized quark distribution and fragmentation functions.

The angular momentum controversy: What's it all about and does it matter?

The general question, crucial to an understanding of the internal structure of the nucleon, of how to split the total angular momentum of a photon or gluon into spin and orbital contributions is one of the most important and interesting challenges faced by gauge theories like Quantum Electrodynamics and Quantum Chromodynamics. This is particularly challenging since all QED textbooks state that such an splitting cannot be done for a photon (and a fortiori for a gluon) in a gauge-invariant way, yet experimentalists around the world are engaged in measuring what they believe is the gluon spin! This question has been a subject of intense debate and controversy, ever since, in 2008, it was claimed that such a gauge-invariant split was, in fact, possible. We explain in what sense this claim is true and how it turns out that one of the main problems is that such a decomposition is not unique and therefore raises the question of what is the most natural or physical choice. The essential requirement of measurability does not solve the ambiguities and leads us to the conclusion that the choice of a particular decomposition is essentially a matter of taste and convenience. In this review, we provide a pedagogical introduction to the question of angular momentum decomposition in a gauge theory, present the main relevant decompositions and discuss in detail several aspects of the controversies regarding the question of gauge invariance, frame dependence, uniqueness and measurability. We stress the physical implications of the recent developments and collect into a separate section all the sum rules and relations which we think experimentally relevant. We hope that such a review will make the matter amenable to a broader community and will help to clarify the present situation.

On the potential role of the Collins effect in A_N in pp --> pion X

Transverse single spin asymmetries in pp --> pion X processes, while on a quite firm ground experimentally, are still a much debated phenomenological issue. We consider them in a transverse momentum dependent factorization scheme. After revisiting a previous result, we give new estimates of the Collins contribution by adopting the latest information on the Collins and transversity functions, as extracted from SIDIS and e+e- data.

On the role of Collins effect in the single spin asymmetry A_N in p(transv. polarized) p --> h X processes

The much debated issue of the transverse single spin asymmetry A_N observed in the inclusive large P_T production of a single hadron in pp interactions, p(transv. polarized) p --> pion X, is considered in a TMD factorization scheme. A previous result [1,2] stating that the maximum contribution of the Collins effect is strongly suppressed, is revisited, correcting a numerical error. New estimates are given, adopting the Collins functions recently extracted from SIDIS and e+e- data, and phenomenological consequences are discussed.

On model independent extraction of the Kaon Fragmentation Functions

We present a model independent approach to FFs, which allows to determine uniquely the non-singlet combination (D_u-D_d)^{K^++K^-} of the kaon FFs, independently in the three different processes of kaon inclusive production: e+e- annihilation, pp-collisions and lN semi-inclusive DIS. Only C and SU(2) invariances are used and no assumptions on FFs and PDFs, the result holds in any order in QCD. The non-singlets obtained in this way, would allow to test the commonly used assumptions in global fit analysis and to test universality. This method is applied to kaon production data in e+e-\to K+X,\,K=K^\pm, K^0_s and (D_u-D_d)^{K^++K^-} is obtained without any assumptions. This result is compared to the existing parametrizations, obtained in global fit analysis.

On the importance of Lorentz structure in the parton model: target mass corrections, transverse momentum dependence, positivity bounds

We show that respecting the underlying Lorentz structure in the parton model has very strong consequences. Failure to insist on the correct Lorentz covariance is responsible for the existence of contradictory results in the literature for the polarized structure function g_2(x), whereas with the correct imposition we are able to derive the Wandzura-Wilczek relation for g_2(x) and the target-mass corrections for polarized deep inelastic scattering without recourse to the operator product expansion. We comment briefly on the problem of threshold behaviour in the presence of target-mass corrections. Careful attention to the Lorentz structure has also profound implications for the structure of the transverse momentum dependent parton densities often used in parton model treatments of hadron production, allowing the k_T dependence to be derived explicitly. It also leads to stronger positivity and Soffer-type bounds than usually utilized for the collinear densities.

Sivers and Collins Effects: from SIDIS to Proton-Proton Inclusive Pion Production

We consider the Sivers, Collins and transversity functions as extracted from SIDIS and e+e- experimental data and investigate to what extent they might explain the large Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) observed in proton-proton inclusive processes. This phenomenological study is performed within the TMD factorization scheme. As the SIDIS data cover only a limited range of x values (x < 0.3), we allow for different large $x$ behaviours of the SIDIS Sivers functions and transversity distributions. We conclude that, within the available experimental constraints, one cannot observe any clear universality breaking effect for the Sivers functions.

Spin Structure of the Nucleon - Status and Recent Results

After the initial discovery of the so-called "spin crisis in the parton model" in the 1980's, a large set of polarization data in deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering was collected at labs like SLAC, DESY and CERN. More recently, new high precision data at large x and in the resonance region have come from experiments at Jefferson Lab. These data, in combination with the earlier ones, allow us to study in detail the polarized parton densities, the Q^2 dependence of various moments of spin structure functions, the duality between deep inelastic and resonance data, and the nucleon structure in the valence quark region. Together with complementary data from HERMES, RHIC and COMPASS, we can put new limits on the flavor decomposition and the gluon contribution to the nucleon spin. In this report, we provide an overview of our present knowledge of the nucleon spin structure and give an outlook on future experiments. We focus in particular on the spin structure functions g_1 and g_2 of the nucleon and their moments.

Intrinsic parton motion soft mechanisms and the longitudinal spin asymmetry A_LL in high energy pp -> pi X

The longitudinal double spin asymmetry A_LL in the reaction pp --> pi X has been measured at RHIC with extremely interesting consequences. If the gluon polarization in a proton were as big as needed to resolve the famous "spin crisis" then A_LL would be large and positive. Latest RHIC results indicate that A_LL is small and disfavour large positive values of the gluon polarization. We examine whether the soft mechanisms (Collins, Sivers, Boer-Mulders), essential for generating transverse single spin asymmetries, have any significant influence on A_LL, and whether they could alter the conclusion that the gluon polarization is necessarily small. It turns out that the contribution from these effects is essentially negligible.

Sivers and Collins effects in polarized pp scattering processes

We summarize the present phenomenology of Sivers and Collins effects for transverse single spin asymmetries in polarized proton-proton collisions within the framework of the generalized parton model (GPM). We will discuss a reassessment of the Collins effect and some preliminary predictions for SSA's in p(pol) p -> pi,K + X processes at RHIC obtained using updated information from SIDIS data and a new set of meson fragmentation functions.

General partonic structure for hadronic spin asymmetries

The high energy and large p_T inclusive polarized process, (A, S_A) + (B, S_B) --> C + X, is considered under the assumption of a generalized QCD factorization scheme. For the first time all transverse motions, of partons in hadrons and of hadrons in fragmenting partons, are explicitly taken into account; the elementary interactions are computed at leading order with noncollinear exact kinematics, which introduces many phases in the expressions of their helicity amplitudes. Several new spin and k_T dependent soft functions appear and contribute to the cross sections and to spin asymmetries; we put emphasis on their partonic interpretation, in terms of quark and gluon polarizations inside polarized hadrons. Connections with other notations and further information are given in some Appendices. The formal expressions for single and double spin asymmetries are derived. The transverse single spin asymmetry A_N, for p(transv. polarized) p --> pion + X processes is considered in more detail, and all contributions are evaluated numerically by saturating unknown functions with their upper positivity bounds. It is shown that the integration of the phases arising from the noncollinear kinematics strongly suppresses most contributions to the single spin asymmetry, leaving at work predominantly the Sivers effect and, to a lesser extent, the Collins mechanism.

General helicity formalism for Single and Double Spin Asymmetries in p p --> pion + X

We consider within a generalized QCD factorization approach, the high energy inclusive polarized process p p --> pion + X, including all intrinsic partonic motions. Several new spin and k_T-dependent soft functions appear and contribute to cross sections and spin asymmetries. We present here formal expressions for transverse single spin asymmetries and double longitudinal ones. The transverse single spin asymmetry, A_N, is considered in detail, and all contributions are evaluated numerically. It is shown that the azimuthal phase integrations strongly suppress most contributions, leaving at work mainly the Sivers effect.

Helicity Formalism and Spin Asymmetries in Hadronic Processes

We present a generalized QCD factorization scheme for the high energy inclusive polarized process, (A, S_A) + (B, S_B) -> C + X, including all intrinsic partonic motions. This introduces many non-trivial azimuthal phases and several new spin and k_T dependent soft functions. The formal expressions for single and double spin asymmetries are discussed. Numerical results for A_N[p(transv. polarized) p -> pi + X] are presented.

Can the Collins mechanism explain the large transverse single spin asymmetries observed in p(transv. polarized) p --> pion X?

We present a calculation of inclusive polarised and unpolarised cross sections within pQCD and the factorisation scheme, taking into account the parton intrinsic motion, k_T, in distribution and fragmentation functions, as well as in the elementary dynamics. We show, in contradiction with earlier claims, that the Collins mechanism is suppressed and unable to explain the large asymmetries found in p(transv. polarized) p --> pion X at moderate to large Feynman x_F. The Sivers effect is not suppressed.

The Gluon Sivers Distribution in D production at RHIC

The single transverse spin asymmetry in D meson production at RHIC can provide a clean measure of the gluon Sivers distribution function. At intermediate rapidity, D production is largely dominated by the elementary gg -> c c-bar channel, where there cannot be any transverse spin transfer. Therefore, any transverse single spin asymmetry observed for D's produced in polarized proton-proton interactions can only originate from the Sivers effect in the gluon distribution functions. A sizeable transverse single spin asymmetry measured by PHENIX or STAR experiments would then give direct information on the size of the gluon Sivers distribution function.

The Role of Higher Twist in Determining Polarized Parton Densities from DIS data

Different methods to extract the polarized parton densities from the world polarized DIS data are considered. The higher twist corrections $h^N(x)/Q^2$ to the spin dependent proton and neutron $g_1$ structure functions are found to be non-negligible and important in the QCD analysis of the present experimental data. Their role in determining the polarized parton densities in the framework of the different approaches is discussed.
