Optimizing spin polarization in quantum dot vertical-gain structures through pump wavelength selection

Spintronic applications require an efficient injection of spin-polarized carriers. We study the maximally achievable spin polarization in InAs quantum dots in a vertical-cavity gain structure to be used in telecoms-wavelength vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers via measurement of the Stokes parameter of the photoluminescence emission around 1290 nm. Using five pump wavelengths between 850 and 1070 nm, the observed spin polarization depends strongly on the pump wavelength with the highest polarization of nearly 5% found for excitation at 980 nm. This corresponds to an effective spin lifetime of 40 ps and is attributed to the dominant excitation of heavy holes only.

Topological and conventional nano-photonic waveguides for directional integrated quantum optics

Chirality in integrated quantum photonics has emerged as a promising route towards achieving scalable quantum technologies with quantum nonlinearity effects. Topological photonic waveguides, which utilize helical optical modes, have been proposed as a novel approach to harnessing chiral light-matter interactions on-chip. However, uncertainties remain regarding the nature and strength of the chiral coupling to embedded quantum emitters, hindering the scalability of these systems. In this work, we present a comprehensive investigation of chiral coupling in topological photonic waveguides using a combination of experimental, theoretical, and numerical analyses. We quantitatively characterize the position-dependence nature of the light-matter coupling on several topological photonic waveguides and benchmark their chiral coupling performance against conventional line defect waveguides for chiral quantum optical applications. Our results provide crucial insights into the degree and characteristics of chiral light-matter interactions in topological photonic quantum circuits and pave the way towards the implementation of quantitatively-predicted quantum nonlinear effects on-chip.

Nonlinear Quantum Optics at a Topological Interface Enabled by Defect Engineering

The integration of topology into photonics has generated a new design framework for constructing robust and unidirectional waveguides, which are not feasible with traditional photonic devices. Here, we overcome current barriers to the successful integration of quantum emitters such as quantum dots (QDs) into valley-Hall (VH) topological waveguides, utilising photonic defects at the topological interface to stabilise the local charge environment and inverse design for efficient topological-conventional mode conversion. By incorporating QDs within defects of VH-photonic crystals, we demonstrate the first instances of single-photon resonant fluorescence and resonant transmission spectroscopy of a quantum emitter at a topological waveguide interface. Our results bring together topological photonics with optical nonlinear effects at the single-photon level, offering a new avenue to investigate the interaction between topology and quantum nonlinear systems.

A chiral topological add-drop filter for integrated quantum photonic circuits

The integration of quantum emitters within topological nano-photonic devices opens up new avenues for the control of light-matter interactions at the single photon level. Here, we realise a spin-dependent, chiral light-matter interface using individual semiconductor quantum dots embedded in a topological add-drop filter. The filter is imprinted within a valley-Hall photonic crystal (PhC) membrane and comprises a resonator evanescently coupled to a pair of access waveguides. We show that the longitudinal modes of the resonator enable the filter to perform wavelength-selective routing of light, protected by the underlying topology. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for a quantum dot located at a chiral point in the resonator, selective coupling occurs between well-defined spin states and specific output ports of the topological device. This behaviour is fundamental to the operation of chiral devices such as a quantum optical circulator. Our device therefore represents a topologically-protected building block with potential to play an enabling role in the development of chiral integrated quantum photonic circuits.

Optical analogue of Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction in photonic graphene

The concept of gauge fields plays a significant role in many areas of physics from particle physics and cosmology to condensed matter systems, where gauge potentials are a natural consequence of electromagnetic fields acting on charged particles and are of central importance in topological states of matter. Here, we report on the experimental realization of a synthetic non-Abelian gauge field for photons in a honeycomb microcavity lattice. We show that the effective magnetic field associated with TE-TM splitting has the symmetry of Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction around Dirac points in the dispersion, and can be regarded as an SU(2) gauge field. The symmetry of the field is revealed in the optical spin Hall effect (OSHE), where under resonant excitation of the Dirac points precession of the photon pseudospin around the field direction leads to the formation of two spin domains. Furthermore, we observe that the Dresselhaus field changes its sign in the same Dirac valley on switching from s to p bands in good agreement with the tight binding modelling. Our work demonstrating a non-Abelian gauge field for light on the microscale paves the way towards manipulation of photons via spin on a chip.

A Semiconductor Topological Photonic Ring Resonator

Unidirectional photonic edge states arise at the interface between two topologically-distinct photonic crystals. Here, we demonstrate a micron-scale GaAs photonic ring resonator, created using a spin Hall-type topological photonic crystal waveguide. Embedded InGaAs quantum dots are used to probe the mode structure of the device. We map the spatial profile of the resonator modes, and demonstrate control of the mode confinement through tuning of the photonic crystal lattice parameters. The intrinsic chirality of the edge states makes them of interest for applications in integrated quantum photonics, and the resonator represents an important building block towards the development of such devices with embedded quantum emitters.

Optical spin locking of a solid-state qubit

Quantum control of solid-state spin qubits typically involves pulses in the microwave domain, drawing from the well-developed toolbox of magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Driving a solid-state spin by optical means offers a high-speed alternative, which in the presence of limited spin coherence makes it the preferred approach for high-fidelity quantum control. Bringing the full versatility of magnetic spin resonance to the optical domain requires full phase and amplitude control of the optical fields. Here, we imprint a programmable microwave sequence onto a laser field and perform electron spin resonance in a semiconductor quantum dot via a two-photon Raman process. We show that this approach yields full SU(2) spin control with over 98% pi-rotation fidelity. We then demonstrate its versatility by implementing a particular multi-axis control sequence, known as spin locking. Combined with electron-nuclear Hartmann-Hahn resonances which we also report in this work, this sequence will enable efficient coherent transfer of a quantum state from the electron spin to the mesoscopic nuclear ensemble.

Tunable photon statistics exploiting the Fano effect in a waveguide

A strong optical nonlinearity arises when coherent light is scattered by a semiconductor quantumdot (QD) coupled to a nano-photonic waveguide. We exploit the Fano effect in such a waveguide to control the phase of the quantum interference underpinning the nonlinearity, experimentally demonstrating a tunable quantum optical filter which converts a coherent input state into either a bunched, or antibunched non-classical output state. We show theoretically that the generation of non-classical light is predicated on the formation of a two-photon bound state due to the interaction of the input coherent state with the QD. Our model demonstrates that the tunable photon statistics arise from the dependence of the sign of two-photon interference (either constructive or destructive) on the detuning of the input relative to the Fano resonance.

Effect of photonic spin-orbit coupling on the topological edge modes of a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain

We study the effect of photonic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in micropillar lattices on the topological edge states of a one-dimensional chain with a zigzag geometry, corresponding to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model equipped with an additional internal degree of freedom. The system combines the strong hopping anisotropy of the $p$-type pillar modes with the large TE-TM splitting in Bragg microcavities. By resolving the photoluminescence emission in energy and polarization we probe the effects of the resulting SOC on the spatial and spectral properties of the edge modes. We find that the edge modes feature a fine structure of states that penetrate by different amounts into the bulk of the chain, depending on the strength of the SOC terms present, thereby opening a route to manipulation of the topological states in the system.

Spin domains in one-dimensional conservative polariton solitons

We report stable orthogonally polarised domains in high-density polariton solitons propagating in a semiconductor microcavity wire. This effect arises from spin dependent polariton-polariton interactions and pump-induced imbalance of polariton spin populations. The interactions result in an effective magnetic field acting on polariton spin across the soliton profile, leading to the formation of polarisation domains. Our experimental findings are in excellent agreement with theoretical modelling taking into account these effects.

Non-Reciprocal Transmission and Reflection of a Chirally-Coupled Quantum Dot

We report strongly non-reciprocal behaviour for quantum dot exciton spins coupled to nano-photonic waveguides under resonant laser excitation. A clear dependence of the transmission spectrum on the propagation direction is found for a chirally-coupled quantum dot, with spin up and spin down exciton spins coupling to the left and right propagation directions respectively. The reflection signal shows an opposite trend to the transmission, which a numerical model indicates is due to direction-selective saturation of the quantum dot. The chiral spin-photon interface we demonstrate breaks reciprocity of the system and opens the way to spin-based quantum optical components such as optical diodes and circulators in a chip-based solid-state environment.

Electro-mechanical control of an on-chip optical beam splitter containing an embedded quantum emitter

We demonstrate electro-mechanical control of an on-chip GaAs optical beam splitter containing a quantum dot single-photon source. The beam splitter consists of two nanobeam waveguides, which form a directional coupler (DC). The splitting ratio of the DC is controlled by varying the out-of-plane separation of the two waveguides using electro-mechanical actuation. We reversibly tune the beam splitter between an initial state, with emission into both output arms, and a final state with photons emitted into a single output arm. The device represents a compact and scalable tuning approach for use in III-V semiconductor integrated quantum optical circuits.

Exciton Polaritons in a Two-Dimensional Lieb Lattice with Spin-Orbit Coupling

We study exciton-polaritons in a two-dimensional Lieb lattice of micropillars. The energy spectrum of the system features two flat bands formed from $S$ and $P_{x,y}$ photonic orbitals, into which we trigger bosonic condensation under high power excitation. The symmetry of the orbital wave functions combined with photonic spin-orbit coupling gives rise to emission patterns with pseudospin texture in the flat band condensates. Our work shows the potential of polariton lattices for emulating flat band Hamiltonians with spin-orbit coupling, orbital degrees of freedom and interactions.

High Purcell factor generation of coherent on-chip single photons

On-chip single-photon sources are key components for integrated photonic quantum technologies. Semiconductor quantum dots can exhibit near-ideal single-photon emission but this can be significantly degraded in on-chip geometries owing to nearby etched surfaces. A long-proposed solution to improve the indistinguishablility is by using the Purcell effect to reduce the radiative lifetime. However, until now only modest Purcell enhancements have been observed. Here we use pulsed resonant excitation to eliminate slow relaxation paths, revealing a highly Purcell-shortened radiative lifetime (22.7 ps) in a waveguide-coupled quantum dot-photonic crystal cavity system. This leads to near-lifetime-limited single-photon emission which retains high indistinguishablility (93.9%) on a timescale in which 20 photons may be emitted. Nearly background-free pulsed resonance fluorescence is achieved under $π$-pulse excitation, enabling demonstration of an on-chip, on-demand single-photon source with very high potential repetition rates.

Transition from propagating polariton solitons to a standing wave condensate induced by interactions

We explore nonlinear transitions of polariton wavepackets, first, to a soliton and then to a standing wave polariton condensate in a multi-mode microwire system. At low polariton density we observe ballistic propagation of the multi-mode polariton wavepackets arising from the interference between different transverse modes. With increasing polariton density, the wavepackets transform into single mode bright solitons due to effects of both inter-modal and intra-modal polariton-polariton scattering. Further increase of the excitation density increases thermalisation speed leading to relaxation of the polariton density distribution in momentum space with the resultant formation of a non-equilibrium condensate manifested by a standing wave pattern across the whole sample.

Electrical control of nonlinear quantum optics in a nano-photonic waveguide

Local control of the generation and interaction of indistinguishable single photons is a key requirement for photonic quantum networks. Waveguide-based architectures, in which embedded quantum emitters act as both highly coherent single photon sources and as nonlinear elements to mediate photon-photon interactions, offer a scalable route to such networks. However, local electrical control of a quantum optical nonlinearity has yet to be demonstrated in a waveguide geometry. Here, we demonstrate local electrical tuning and switching of single photon generation and nonlinear interaction by embedding a quantum dot in a nano-photonic waveguide with enhanced light-matter interaction. A power-dependent transmission extinction as large as 40$\pm$2% and clear, voltage-controlled bunching in the photon statistics of the transmitted light demonstrate the single photon character of the nonlinearity. The deterministic nature of the nonlinearity is particularly attractive for the future realization of photonic gates for scalable nano-photonic waveguide-based quantum information processing.

Coherence of a dynamically decoupled quantum-dot hole spin

A heavy hole confined to an InGaAs quantum dot promises the union of a stable spin and optical coherence to form a near perfect, high-bandwidth spin-photon interface. Despite theoretical predictions and encouraging preliminary measurements, the dynamic processes determining the coherence of the hole spin are yet to be understood. Here, we establish the regimes that allow for a highly coherent hole spin in these systems, recovering a crossover from hyperfine to electrical-noise dominated decoherence with a few-Tesla external magnetic field. Dynamical decoupling allows us to reach the longest ground-state coherence time, T2, of 4.4 $μ$s, observed in this system. The improvement of coherence we measure is quantitatively supported by an independent analysis of the local electrical environment.

Polariton pattern formation and photon statistics of the associated emission

We report on the formation of a diverse family of transverse spatial polygon patterns in a microcavity polariton fluid under coherent driving by a blue-detuned pump. Patterns emerge spontaneously as a result of energy-degenerate polariton-polariton scattering from the pump state to interfering high order vortex and antivortex modes, breaking azimuthal symmetry. The interplay between a multimode parametric instability and intrinsic optical bistability leads to a sharp spike in the value of second order coherence $g^{(2)}(0)$ of the emitted light, which we attribute to the strongly superlinear kinetics of the underlying scattering processes driving the formation of patterns. We show numerically by means of a linear stability analysis how the growth of parametric instabilities in our system can lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking, predicting the formation and competition of different pattern states in good agreement with experimental observations.
