Mapping delocalization of impurity bands across archetypal Mott-Anderson transition

Tailoring charge transport in solids on demand is the overarching goal of condensed-matter research as it is crucial for electronic applications. Yet, often the proper tuning knob is missing and extrinsic factors such as impurities and disorder impede coherent conduction. Here we control the very buildup of an electronic band from impurity states within the pseudogap of ternary Fe$_{2-x}$V$_{1+x}$Al Heusler compounds via reducing the Fe content. Our density functional theory calculations combined with specific heat and electrical resistivity experiments reveal that, initially, these states are Andersonlocalized at low V concentrations $0 < x < 0.1$. As x increases, we monitor the formation of mobility edges upon the archetypal Mott-Anderson transition and map the increasing bandwidth of conducting states by thermoelectric measurements. Ultimately, delocalization of charge carriers in fully disordered V$_3$Al results in a resistivity exactly at the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit that is perfectly temperature-independent up to 700 K - more constant than constantan.

Effect of pressure on electric transport properties of carbon-doped EuB6

We report about influence of external pressure on electrical resistivity of EuB5.99C0.01, the compound believed to be intrinsically inhomogeneous due to fluctuation of carbon content. Our results show that the low-temperature resistivity maximum shifts to lower temperature with applied pressure, opposite to the behavior reported for stoichiometric EuB6. The origin of such qualitative difference we associate with the increasing volume fraction of the phase that is not compatible with ferromagnetic ordering (originating in regions with relatively higher carbon concentratio) with enhancing pressure. Our results support a recent proposition that carbon-rich regions strongly influence magnetotransport properties of carbon-doped EuB6, such as they play a role of spacers, which prevent percolation of ferromagnetic phase.

Pressure-Induced Antiferromagnetic Dome in the Heavy-Fermion $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$ System

In the heavy-fermion system $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$, the interplay of crystal-field splitting, Kondo effect, and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions leads to complex chemical-, pressure-, and magnetic-field phase diagrams, still to be explored in full detail. By using a series of techniques, we show that even modest changes of parameters other than temperature are sufficient to induce multiple quantum-critical transitions in this highly susceptible heavy-fermion family. In particular, we show that, above $\sim 10$ kbar, hydrostatic pressure not only induces an antiferromagnetic phase at low temperature, but it likely leads to a reorientation of the Yb magnetic moments and/or the competition among different antiferromagnetic configurations.

Asymmetry of the neutrino mean free path in partially spin polarized neutron matter within the Skyrme model

The asymmetry in the neutrino mean free path for the absorption reaction $\nu + n \rightarrow e^{-} + p$, is evaluated within hot neutron matter under a strong magnetic field. We consider densities in the range $0.05 \leq \rho \leq 0.4$ fm$^{-3}$, several temperatures up to 30 MeV and magnetic field strengths from $B=0$ up to $B=10^{18}$~G. Polarized neutron matter is described within the non--relativistic Hartree--Fock model using the LNS Skyrme interaction. The neutrino mean free path has a weak dependence with the temperature and in the strong magnetic field region, it decreases for growing values of it. This contrast with the scattering reaction $\nu + n \rightarrow \nu' + n'$, where the average mean free path is almost independent of the magnetic field and has a strong dependence with the temperature. We have evaluated the asymmetry from both the absorption and scattering reactions. Our results shows that the total asymmetry depends on the magnetic field intensity, the density and the temperature. For a density of $0.16$ fm$^{-3}$ and for a magnetic field strength of B=$10^{17}$~G, the asymmetry in the mean free path is found to be, $\sim 9\%$ and $\sim 3.4\%$ for temperatures of T$=15$ and $30$ MeV, respectively. While the same set of asymmetries for B=$10^{18}$~G, is $\sim 58\%$ and $\sim 48\%$.

Strong antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling and superconducting properties: The case of noncentrosymmetric LaPtSi

In this work we aim to analyze the effect of a strong antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC) on superconductivity of noncentrosymmetric LaPtSi. We study the energy gap structure of polycrystalline LaPtSi by using magnetic penetration depth measurements down to 0.02$T_c$. We observed a dirty s-wave behavior, which provides compelling evidence that the spin-singlet component of the mixed pairing state is highly dominant. This is consistent with previous results in the sense that the mere presence of a strong ASOC does not lead to unconventional behaviors. Our result also downplays LaPtSi as a good candidate for realizing time-reversal invariant topological superconductivity.

Physical properties of CeIrSi with trillium-lattice frustrated magnetism

Magnetic ($\chi$), transport ($\rho$) and heat capacity ($C_m$)properties of CeIrSi are investigated to elucidate the effect of geometric frustration in this compound with trillium type structure because, notwithstanding its robust effective moment, $\mu_{\rm eff}\approx 2.46\mu_B$, this Ce-lattice compound does not undergo a magnetic transition. In spite of that it shows broad $C_m(T)/T$ and $\chi(T)$ maxima centered at $T_{max}\approx 1.5$\,K, while a $\rho \propto T^2$ thermal dependence, characteristic of electronic spin coherent fluctuations, is observed below $T_{coh} \approx 2.5$\,K. Magnetic field does not affect significantly the position of the mentioned maxima up to $\approx 1$\,T, though $\chi(T)$ shows an incipient structure that completely vanishes at $\mu_0 H \approx 1$\,T. Concerning the $\rho \propto T^2$ dependence, it is practically not affected by magnetic field up to $\mu_0 H = 9$\,T, with the residual resistivity $\rho_0(H)$ slightly decreasing and $T_{coh}(H)$ increasing. These results are compared with the physical properties observed in other frustrated intermetallic compounds

Single crystal study of the charge density wave metal LuNiC2

We report on single crystal growth, single crystal x-ray diffraction, physical properties and density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure as well as Fermi surface calculations for two ternary carbides, LuCoC2 and LuNiC2. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal for LuNiC2 a charge density wave (CDW) transition at T_{CDW}~ 450 K and, for T > T_{CDW}, a significant anisotropy of the electrical resistivity, which is lowest along the orthorhombic a-axis. The analysis of x-ray superstructure reflections suggest a commensurate CDW state with a Peierls-type distortion of the Ni atom periodicity along the orthorhombic a-axis. DFT calculations based on the CDW modulated monoclinic structure model of LuNiC2 as compared to results of the orthorhombic parent-type reveal the formation of a partial CDW gap at the Fermi level which reduces the electronic density of states from N(E_{F})= 1.03 states/eV f.u. without CDW to N(E_{F})= 0.46 states/eV f.u. in the CDW state. The corresponding bare DFT Sommerfeld value of the latter, gamma_{DFT}^{CDW}= 0.90 mJ/molK^2, reaches reasonable agreement with the experimental value gamma= 0.83(5) mJ/mol\,K^2 of LuNiC2. LuCoC2 displays a simple metallic behavior with neither CDW ordering nor superconductivity above 0.4 K. Its experimental Sommerfeld coefficient, gamma= 5.9 (1) mJ/molK^2, is in realistic correspondence with the calculated, bare Sommerfeld coefficient, gamma_{DFT}= 3.82 mJ/molK^2, of orthorhombic LuCoC2.

Stoichiometric and off-stoichiometric full Heusler $\mathbf {Fe_2V_{1-x}W_xAl} $ thermoelectric systems

A series of full-Heusler alloys, $\rm Fe_2V_{1-x}W_xAl$, $0 \leq x \leq 0.2$, was prepared, characterized and relevant physical properties to account for the thermoelectric performance were studied in a wide temperature range. Additionally, off-stoichiometric samples with similar compositions have been included, and a 10~\% improvement of the thermoelectric figure of merit was obtained. The V/W substitution causes i) a change of the main carrier type, from holes to electrons as evidenced from Seebeck and Hall measurements and ii) a substantial reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity due to a creation of lattice disorder by means of a distinct different mass and metallic radius upon the V/W substitution. Moreover $ZT$ values above 0.2 have been obtained. A microscopic understanding of the experimental data observed is revealed from ab-initio calculations of the electronic and phononic structure.

Clathrate formation in the systems Sr-Cu-Ge and {Ba,Sr}-Cu-Ge

In the ternary system Sr-Cu-Ge, a clathrate type-I phase, Sr8Cu5.3Ge40.7 (a = 1.06311(3), exists close to the Zintl limit in a small temperature interval. Sr8Cu5.3Ge40.7 decomposes eutectoidally on cooling at 730{\deg}C into (Ge), SrGe2 and tau1-SrCu2-xGe2+x. Phase equilibria at 700{\deg}C have been established for the Ge rich part and are characterized by the appearance of only one ternary compound, tau1-SrCu2-xGe2+x, which crystallizes with the ThCr2Si2 structure type and forms a homogeneity range up to x=0.4 (a = 0.42850(4), c = 1.0370(1) nm). Additionally, the extent of the clathrate type-I solid solution Ba8-xSrxCuyGe46-y (5.2 < y < 5.4) has been studied at various temperatures. The clathrate type-I crystal structure (space group ) has been proven by X-ray single crystal diffraction on two single crystals with composition Sr8Cu5.3Ge40.7 (a = 1.06368(2) nm) and Ba4.9Sr3.1Cu5.3Ge40.7 (a = 1.06748(2) nm) measured at 300, 200 and 100 K. From the temperature dependency of the lattice parameters and the atomic displacement parameters, the thermal expansion coefficients, the Debye- and Einstein-temperatures and the speed of sound have been determined. From heat capacity measurements of Sr8Cu5.3Ge40.7 at low temperatures, the Sommerfeld coefficient and the Debye temperature have been extracted, whereas from a detailed analysis of these data at higher temperatures, Einstein branches of the phonon dispersion relation have been derived and compared with those obtained from the atomic displacement parameters. Electrical resistivity measurements of Sr8Cu5.3Ge40.7 reveal a rather metallic behaviour in the low temperature range (< 300 K).

On Ni-Sb-Sn based skutterudites

Novel filled skutterudites EpyNi4Sb12-xSnx (Ep = Ba and La) have been prepared by arc melting followed by annealing at 250C, 350C and 450C up to 30 days in sealed quartz vials. A maximum filling level of y = 0.93 and y = 0.65 was achieved for the Ba and La filled skutterudite, respectively. Single-phase samples with the composition Ni4Sb8.2Sn3.8, Ba0.42Ni4Sb8.2Sn3.8 and Ba0.92Ni4Sb6.7Sn5.3 were employed for measurements of the physical properties i.e. temperature dependent electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity. Resistivity data showed a crossover from metallic to semiconducting behaviour. The corresponding gap width was extracted from maxima in the Seebeck coefficient data as a function of temperature. Temperature dependent single crystal X-ray structure analyses (at 100 K, 200 K and 300 K) revealed the thermal expansion coefficients, Einstein and Debye temperatures for two selected samples Ba0.73Ni4Sb8.1Sn3.9 and Ba0.95Ni4Sb6.1Sn5.9. These data compare well with Debye temperatures from measurements of specific heat (4.4 K < T < 200 K). Several mechanical properties were measured and evaluated. Thermal expansion coefficients are 11.8.10-6 K-1 for Ni4Sb8.2Sn3.8 to 13.8.10-6 K-1 for Ba0.92Ni4Sb6.7Sn5.3. Room temperature Vicker's hardness values (up to a load of 24.5 mN) vary within the range of 2.6 GPa to 4.7 GPa. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) via high-pressure torsion (HPT) was used to introduce nanostructuring. Physical properties before and after HPT were compared, showing no significant effect on the material's thermoelectric behaviour.

Nonmesonic Weak Decay of $\Lambda$ Hypernuclei: The Three--Nucleon Induced Mode

The nonmesonic weak decay of $\Lambda$ hypernuclei is studied within a microscopic diagrammatic approach which is extended to include the three--nucleon induced mechanism. We adopt a nuclear matter formalism which, through the local density approximation, allows us to model finite hypernuclei, a one--meson--exchange weak transition potential and a Bonn nucleon--nucleon strong potential. One--, two-- and three--nucleon induced weak decay rates are predicted for $^{12}_\Lambda$C by including ground state correlations up to second order in the nucleon--nucleon potential and the recoil of the residual nucleus. Three--nucleon stimulated decays, $\Lambda NNN\to nNNN$ ($N=n$ or $p$), are considered here for the first time. The obtained decay rates compare well with the latest KEK and FINUDA data. The three--nucleon induced rate turns out to be dominated by $nnp$-- and $npp$--induced decays, it amounts to $\sim$ 7\% of the total nonmesonic rate and it is $\sim 1/2$ of the neutron--induced decay rate. The reduction effect of the nuclear recoil is particularly relevant for the three--nucleon induced rates ($\sim$ 15\%), less important for the two--nucleon induced rates ($\sim$ 4\%) and negligible for the one--nucleon induced rates. Given the non--negligible size of the three--nucleon induced contribution and consequently its importance in the precise determination of the complete set of decay rates, new measurements and/or experimental analysis are encouraged.

Evidence of s-wave superconductivity in ternary intermetallic La3Pd4Si4

We measured the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth of La3Pd4Si4 down to 0.02 Tc. We observe a temperature-independent behaviour below 0.25 Tc, which is firm evidence for a nodeless superconducting gap in this material. The data display a very small anomaly around 1 K which we attribute to the possible presence of a superconducting impurity phase. The superfluid density is well described by a two-phase model, considering La3Pd4Si4 and the impurity phase. The present analysis suggests that the superconducting energy gap of La3Pd4Si4 is isotropic, as expected for conventional BCS superconductors.

Coexistence of phases in asymmetric nuclear matter under strong magnetic fields

The equation of state of nuclear matter is strongly affected by the presence of a magnetic field. Here we study the equilibrium configuration of asymmetric nuclear matter for a wide range of densities, isospin composition, temperatures and magnetic fields. Special attention is paid to the low density and low temperature domain, where a thermodynamical instability exists. Neglecting fluctuations of the Coulomb force, a coexistence of phases is found under such conditions, even for extreme magnetic intensities. We describe the nuclear interaction by using the non--relativistic Skyrme potential model within a Hartree--Fock approach. We found that the coexistence of phases modifies the equilibrium configuration, masking most of the manifestations of the spin polarized matter. However, the compressibility and the magnetic susceptibility show clear signals of this fact. Thermal effects are significative for both quantities, mainly out of the coexistence region.

Absence of spin-orbit-coupling-induced effects on lattice dynamics in CePt3Si

Motivated by model calculations for the heavy fermion superconductor CePt3Si predicting phonon anomalies because of anti-symmetric spin-orbit coupling we performed a detailed experimental study of the lattice dynamical properties of CePt3Si. In particular, we investigated the dispersion of transverse acoustic and low energy optic phonon branches along the [110] direction using inelastic neutron scattering. In these branches, we found deviations from our ab-initio lattice dynamical calculations, which overall give a good description of the phonon dispersion in CePt3Si. However, the agreement for the [110] transverse modes can be improved if we neglect the Ce 4f states, done in an additional calculation. We conclude that the lattice dynamics of CePt3Si are conventional and that the observed deviations are not related to effects of anti-symmetric spin-orbit-coupling. More likely, ab-initio calculations overestimate the exchange between different phonon branches, particularly in the presence of 4f electron states. Our results imply that the ASOC plays less a role in non-centrosymmetric superconductors than commonly believed.

The magnetic ground state properties of non-centrosymmetric CePt$_3$B$_{1-x}$Si$_x$

We present a study of the alloying series of the non-centrosymmetric $f$-electron intermetallic CePt$_3$B$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ by means of muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements. In addition, we include a high pressure magnetization investigation of the stoichiometric parent compound CePt$_3$B. From our data we establish the nature of the magnetic ground state properties of the series, derive the ordered magnetic moment as function of stoichiometry and gain insight into the evolution of the symmetry of the ordered magnetic state with $x$. We thus can verify the notion that the behavior of the sample series can essentially be understood within the framework of the Doniach phase diagram. Further, our findings raise the issue of the role the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya magnetic interaction plays in correlated electron materials, and its effect on magnetic fluctuations in such materials.

The Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of Double-Lambda Hypernuclei: A Microscopic Approach

The non--mesonic weak decay of double--$Λ$ hypernuclei is studied within a microscopic diagrammatic approach. Besides the nucleon--induced mechanism, $ΛN\to nN$, widely studied in single--$Λ$ hypernuclei, additional hyperon--induced mechanisms, $ΛΛ\to Λn$, $ΛΛ\to Σ^0 n$ and $ΛΛ\to Σ^-p$, are accessible in double--$Λ$ hypernuclei and are investigated here. As in previous works on single--$Λ$ hypernuclei, we adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation and a one--meson exchange weak transition potential (including the ground state pseudoscalar and vector octets mesons) supplemented by correlated and uncorrelated two--pion--exchange contributions. The weak decay rates are evaluated for hypernuclei in the region of the experimentally accessible light hypernuclei $^{10}_{ΛΛ}$Be and $^{13}_{ΛΛ}$B. Our predictions are compared with a few previous evaluations. The rate for the $ΛΛ\to Λn$ decay is dominated by $K$--, $K^*$-- and $η$--exchange and turns out to be about 2.5\% of the free $Λ$ decay rate, $Γ_Λ^{\rm free}$, while the total rate for the $ΛΛ\to Σ^0 n$ and $ΛΛ\to Σ^- p$ decays, dominated by $π$--exchange, amounts to about 0.25\% of $Γ_Λ^{\rm free}$. The experimental measurement of these decays would be essential for the beginning of a systematic study of the non--mesonic decay of strangeness $-2$ hypernuclei. This field of research could also shed light on the possible existence and nature of the $H$--dibaryon.

Neutron matter under strong magnetic fields: a comparison of models

The equation of state of neutron matter is affected by the presence of a magnetic field due to the intrinsic magnetic moment of the neutron. Here we study the equilibrium configuration of this system for a wide range of densities, temperatures and magnetic fields. Special attention is paid to the behavior of the isothermal compressibility and the magnetic susceptibility. Our calculation is performed using both microscopic and phenomenological approaches of the neutron matter equation of state, namely the Brueckner--Hartree--Fock (BHF) approach using the Argonne V18 nucleon-nucleon potential supplemented with the Urbana IX three-nucleon force, the effective Skyrme model in a Hartree--Fock description, and the Quantum Hadrodynamic formulation with a mean field approximation. All these approaches predict a change from completely spin polarized to partially polarized matter that leads to a continuous equation of state. The compressibility and the magnetic susceptibility show characteristic behaviors, which reflect that fact. Thermal effects tend to smear out the sharpness found for these quantities at T=0. In most cases a thermal increase of 10 MeV is enough to hide the signals of the change of polarization. The set of densities and magnetic field intensities for which the system changes it spin polarization is different for each model. However, there is an overall agreement between the three theoretical descriptions.

Optimizing thermoelectric properties of filled MPt$_4$Ge$_{12-x}$Sb$_x$ skutterudites by band engineering

On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations thermoelectric properties are derived for Sb-doped skutterudites MPt$_4$Ge$_{12-x}$Sb$_x$ with M=Ba,La,Th. It is predicted that the originally very small absolute values of Seebeck coefficients $|S|$ of the undoped compounds is increased by factors of 10 or more for suitable dopings. The optimal dopings correspond to a "magic" valence electron number for which all electronic states up to a (pseudo)gap are filled. The theoretical findings are corroborated by measurements of $S$ for LaPt$_4$Ge$_{12-x}$Sb$_x$ skutterudites. DFT derived vibrational rattling-like modes for LaPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ indicate a small value for the lattice thermal conductivity which in combination with a large value of $S^2$ makes the La-based skutterudites appear as promising thermoelectric materials.
