Enhanced Elevated-Temperature Strength in Refractory Complex Concentrated Alloys via Temperature-Induced Transition from Screw-to-Edge Dislocation Control

Refractory complex concentrated alloys (RCCAs) show promise for high-temperature applications but often lose strength due to screw-dislocation-controlled plasticity. We demonstrate a temperature-driven transition from screw- to edge-dislocation-controlled deformation in a single-phase NbTaTiV RCCA. Tensile tests from 298-1573 K reveal a pronounced intermediate-temperature strength plateau and yield strengths surpassing other ductile RCCAs and the Ni-based superalloy CMSX-4 above 1273 K. In-situ neutron diffraction, TEM, and molecular dynamics identify a crossover near ~900 K, where edge dislocation glide stabilized by V-induced lattice distortion dominates, enabling enhanced strength retention and a clear design strategy for ultrahigh-temperature applications.

Mechanistic Transition from Screw to Edge Dislocation Glide Enhances High-Temperature Strength in Refractory Complex Concentrated Alloys

The strength of body-centered cubic materials is traditionally known to be governed by screw dislocations. However, recent findings reveal that in certain refractory complex concentrated alloys, edge dislocations can instead control strength. This work integrates high-temperature mechanical testing, in-situ neutron scattering during heating and tension, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations to uncover the mechanism behind this behavior. In the Nb-Ta-Ti-V system, increasing the V content, due to its smaller atomic size, induces substantial atomic misfit that raises the glide barrier for edge dislocations relative to screw dislocations. This effect drives a gradual transition from screw to edge dislocation-controlled deformation, leading to markedly enhanced strength at elevated temperatures.

Discovery of a reversible redox-induced order-disorder transition in a 10-cation compositionally complex ceramic

This study discovers a reversible order-disorder transition (ODT) in a 10-cation compositionally complex ceramic, (Nd0.15Pr0.15Dy0.8Ho0.8Er0.8Ti0.2Yb0.1Hf0.1Zr0.1Nb0.8)O7-delta, induced via annealing in oxidized vs. reduced environments at 1600C. Notably, the 10-cation oxide remains a homogenous single-phase high-entropy solid solution before and after the ODT in the pyrochlore vs. fluorite structure that can be quenched. In-situ neutron diffraction reveals the oxygen vacancy formation and atomic displacement during this ODT. The temperature dependence of thermal conductivity is altered by the ODT. This study reveals a new pathway to induce ODT via a redox transition to tailor the properties of compositionally complex fluorite-based oxides.

Investigating the difference in mechanical stability of retained austenite in bainitic and martensitic high-carbon bearing steels using in situ neutron diffraction and crystal plasticity modeling

In situ neutron diffraction of the uniaxial tension test was used to study the effect of the surrounding matrix microstructure on the mechanical stability of retained austenite in high-carbon bearing steels. Comparing the samples with bainitic microstructures to those with martensitic ones it was found that the retained austenite in a bainitic matrix starts transforming into martensite at a lower strain compared to that within a martensitic matrix. On the other hand, the rate of transformation of the austenite was found to be higher within a martensitic microstructure. Crystal plasticity modeling was used to analyze the transformation phenomenon in these two microstructures and determine the effect of surrounding microstructure on elastic, plastic and transformation components of the strain. The results showed that the predominant difference in the deformation accumulated was from the transformation strain and the critical transformation driving force within the two microstructures. The retained austenite was more stable for identical loading conditions in case of martensitic matrix compared to the bainitic one. It was also observed that the initial volume fraction of retained austenite within the bainitic matrix would alter the onset of transformation to martensite but not the rate of transformation.

Stress Induced Charge-Ordering Process in LiMn2O4

In this letter we report the stress induced Mn charge-ordering process in the LiMn2O4 spinel, evidenced by the lattice strain evolutions due to the Jahn-Teller effects. In-situ neutron diffraction, reveals that the initial stage of this process at low stress, indicating the eg electron localization at the preferential Mn sites during the early phase transition, as an underlying charge ordering mechanism in the charge-frustrated LiMn2O4. The initial stage of this transition exhibits as a progressive lattice and charge evolution, without showing a first-order behavior.
