Nonlinearity-Induced Thouless Pumping in Quasiperiodic Lattices

Nonlinear Thouless pumping has been established in periodic lattices; its counterpart in quasiperiodic lattices remains unexplored. Here, we show a nonlinear topological pumping of gap solitons in quasiperiodic lattices where the local nonlinear self-consistent potentials lead to a lattice potential reconstruction; as a result, an emergent topological structure induced by this local reconstruction governs the dynamics of the gap solitons. This enables solitons to adiabatically occupy a single topological band, realizing quasi-quantized Thouless pumping. In addition, the intrinsic lattice perturbations disrupt this band occupation, which drives solitons into a non-quantized drifting regime. However, even in this regime, we also find that the soliton transport is constrained by the topological properties of a critical rational approximant. Tuning nonlinearity or lattice scaling reveals a controllable switching among topological pumping, drifting, and localization. Our work uncovers a mechanism for nonlinearity-induced topological behavior in complex lattice potentials.

Well-posedness and scattering of odd solutions for the defocusing INLS in one dimension

We consider the defocusing inhomogeneous nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation $i\partial_tu+\Delta u= |x|^{-b}|u|^{\alpha}u,$ where $0<b<1$ and $0<\alpha<\infty$. This problem has been extensively studied for initial data in $H^1(\R^N)$ with $N\geq 2$. However, in the one-dimensional setting, due to the difficulty in dealing with the singularity factor $|x|^{-b}$, the well-posedness and scattering in $H^1(\R)$ are scarce, and almost known results have been established in $H^s(\R)$ with $s<1$. In this paper, we focus on the odd initial data in $H^1(\R)$. For this case, we establish local well-posedness for $0<\alpha<\infty$, as well as global well-posedness and scattering for $4-2b<\alpha<\infty$, which corresponds to the mass-supercritical case. The key ingredient is the application of the one-dimensional Hardy inequality for odd functions to overcome the singularity induced by $|x|^{-b}$. Our proof is based on the Strichartz estimates and employs the concentration-compactness/rigidity method developed by Kenig-Merle as well as the technique for handling initial data living far from the origin, as proposed by Miao-Murphy-Zheng. Our results fill a gap in the theory of well-posedness and energy scattering for the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation in one dimension.

Decay of solutions to one-dimensional inhomogeneous nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations

We investigate the decay estimates of global solutions for a class of one-dimensional inhomogeneous nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations. While most existing results focus on spatial dimensions $d\geq2$, the decay properties in one dimension remain less explored due to the absence of effective Morawetz inequalities. For equations without external potential, by establishing a localized Virial-Morawetz identity, we derive decay estimates in the context of the $L^r$-norm for global solutions within a compact domain as a time subsequence approaches infinity. This decay result can be applied to obtain a criterion for energy scattering. Additionally, by establishing another type of Virial-Morawetz identity under more strict conditions, we demonstrate the decay result for odd solutions for any time sequence that approaches infinity. Utilizing some results about bound states proved by Barry Simon, we also show that similar decay results hold for the global odd solutions of equations with suitable external potentials that contain inverse power type and Yukawa-type potentials.

Concentration Behavior of Nonlinear Hartree-type Equation with almost Mass Critical Exponent

We study the following nonlinear Hartree-type equation \begin{equation*} -\Delta u+V(x)u-a(\frac{1}{|x|^\gamma}\ast |u|^2)u=\lambda u,~\text{in}~\mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation*} where $a>0$, $N\geq3$, $\gamma\in(0,2)$ and $V(x)$ is an external potential. We first study the asymptotic behavior of the ground state of equation for $V(x)\equiv1$, $a=1$ and $\lambda=0$ as $\gamma\nearrow2$. Then we consider the case of some trapping potential $V(x)$, and show that all the mass of ground states concentrate at a global minimum point of $V(x)$ as $\gamma\nearrow2$, which leads to symmetry breaking. Moreover, the concentration rate for maximum points of ground states will be given.

Inhomogeneous spin domain induced by the quadratic Zeeman effect in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We show two kinds of inhomogeneous spin domain possessing Néel-like domain walls in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate, which are induced by the positive and negative quadratic Zeeman effect (QZE) respectively. In both cases, the spin density distribution is inhomogeneous and has zeros where the magnetization vanishes. For positive and negative QZE, the spin patterns and topological structures are remarkably different. Such phenomena are due to the pointwise different axisymmetry-breaking caused by the pointwise different population exchange between the sublevels, arising uniquely from the QZE. We analyze in detail the inhomogeneous domain formation and related experimental observations for the spin-1 $^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na condensate.

Optimal bilinear control of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with singular potentials

In this paper, we consider an optimal bilinear control problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equations with singular potentials. We show well-posedness of the problem and existence of an optimal control. In addition, the first order optimality system is rigorously derived. Our results generalize the ones in \cite{Sp} in several aspects.

Integrability of two-component nonautonomous nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We investigate the integrability of generalized nonautonomous nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations governing the dynamics of the single- and double-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The integrability conditions obtained indicate that the existence of the nonautonomous soliton is due to the balance between the different competition features: the kinetic energy (dispersion) versus the harmonic external potential applied and the dispersion versus the nonlinearity. In the double-component case, it includes all possible different combinations between the dispersion and nonlinearity involving intra- and inter-interactions. This result shows that the nonautonomous soliton has the same physical origin as the canonical one, which clarifies the nature of the nonautonomous soliton. Finally, we also discuss the dynamics of two-component BEC by controlling the relevant experimental parameters.

Transformation from the nonautonomous to standard NLS equations

In this paper we show a systematical method to obtain exact solutions of the nonautonomous nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. An integrable condition is first obtained by the Painlevè analysis, which is shown to be consistent with that obtained by the Lax pair method. Under this condition, we present a general transformation, which can directly convert all allowed exact solutions of the standard NLS equation into the corresponding exact solutions of the nonautonomous NLS equation. The method is quite powerful since the standard NLS equation has been well studied in the past decades and its exact solutions are vast in the literature. The result provides an effective way to control the soliton dynamics. Finally, the fundamental bright and dark solitons are taken as examples to demonstrate its explicit applications.

Dynamics and modulation of ring dark soliton in 2D Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interaction

We investigate the dynamics and modulation of ring dark soliton in 2D Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interaction both analytically and numerically. The analytic solutions of ring dark soliton are derived by using a new transformation method. For shallow ring dark soliton, it is stable when the ring is slightly distorted, while for large deformation of the ring, vortex pairs appear and they demonstrate novel dynamical behaviors: the vortex pairs will transform into dark lumplike solitons and revert to ring dark soliton periodically. Moreover, our results show that the dynamical evolution of the ring dark soliton can be dramatically affected by Feshbach resonance, and the lifetime of the ring dark soliton can be largely extended which offers a useful method for observing the ring dark soliton in future experiments.

Dissipative solitons stabilized by a quantum Zeno-like effect

An unstable particle in quantum mechanics can be stabilized by frequent measurements, known as the quantum Zeno effect. A soliton with dissipation behaves like an unstable particle. Similar to the quantum Zeno effect, here we show that the soliton can be stabilized by modulating periodically dispersion, nonlinearity, or the external harmonic potential available in BEC. This can be obtained by analyzing a Painleve integrability condition, which results from the rigorous Painleve analysis of the generalized nonautonomous nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The result has a profound implication to the optical soliton transmission and the matter-wave soliton dynamics.

Integrability of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation with Feshbach Resonance management

In this paper we study the integrability of a class of Gross-Pitaevskii equations managed by Feshbach resonance in an expulsive parabolic external potential. By using WTC test, we find a condition under which the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is completely integrable. Under the present model, this integrability condition is completely consistent with that proposed by Serkin, Hasegawa, and Belyaeva [V. N. Serkin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 074102 (2007)]. Furthermore, this integrability can also be explicitly shown by a transformation, which can convert the Gross-Pitaevskii equation into the well-known standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation. By this transformation, each exact solution of the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation can be converted into that of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which builds a systematical connection between the canonical solitons and the so-called nonautonomous ones. The finding of this transformation has a significant contribution to understanding the essential properties of the nonautonomous solitions and the dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensates by using the Feshbach resonance technique.
