Positivity and $\mathbf{L^2}$ Extension

We examine the relationship between positivity of a vector bundle E and the problem of $L^2$ extension of holomorphic E-valued forms of top degree. In particular, we show by example that Griffiths positivity is not enough. Though the sufficiency of Nakano positivity of E has been known for some time, we provide another proof along the lines of Berndtsson and Lempert. For such a proof we establish a vector bundle analogue of a well-known result of Berndtsson. This result is of independent interest and should have many other useful applications.

Positivity of Singular Hermitian Metrics for Holomorphic Vector Bundles

We introduce a notion of Nakano and Demailly positivity for singular Hermitian metrics of holomorphic vector bundles. Our definitions support the usual H\"ormander and Nadel type vanishing theorems with estimates, at least on essentially Stein manifolds. As an application, we establish a sharp Ohsawa-Takegoshi type $L^2$ extension theorem. We use the method of Berndtsson and Lempert to prove the latter theorem, and for this purpose we require a Berndtsson-type positivity theorem for holomorphic vector bundles, which we also prove.

Berndtsson-Lempert-Sz\H{o}ke Fields Associated to Proper Holomorphic Families of Vector Bundles

Drawing on work of Berndtsson and of Lempert and Sz\H{o}ke, we define a kind of complex analytic structure for families of (possibly finite-dimensional) Hilbert spaces that might not fit together to form a holomorphic vector bundle but nevertheless have a reasonable definition of curvature that agrees with the curvature of the Chern connection when the family of Hilbert spaces is locally trivial. We thus obtain a new proof of a celebrated theorem of Berndtsson on the curvature of direct images of semi-positively twisted relative canonical bundles (i.e., adjoint bundles), and of its higher-rank generalization due to Liu and Yang.

Non-uniformly flat affine algebraic hypersurfaces

The relationship between interpolation and separation properties of hypersurfaces in Bargmann-Fock spaces over $\mathbb{C} ^n$ is not well-understood except for $n=1$. We present four examples of smooth affine algebraic hypersurfaces that are not uniformly flat, and show that exactly two of them are interpolating.

Extension of Jets With $L^2$ Estimates, and an Application

We study the problem of extension of normal jets from a hypersurface, with focus on the growth order of the constant. Using aspects of the standard, twisted approach for $L^2$ extension and of the new approach to $L^2$ extension introduced by Berndtsson and Lempert, we are able to obtain an extension theorem with a constant $C^k$ where $C$ is universal and $k$ is the jet order. We then use the jet extension theorem to extend positively curved singular Hermitian metrics from smooth, deformably pseudoeffective hypersurfaces in projective manifolds.

$L^2$ estimates for the $\bar \partial$ operator

This is a survey article about $L^2$ estimates for the $\bar \partial$ operator. After a review of the basic approach that has come to be called the "Bochner-Kodaira Technique", the focus is on twisted techniques and their applications to estimates for $\bar \partial$, to $L^2$ extension theorems, and to other problems in complex analysis and geometry, including invariant metric estimates and the $\bar \partial$-Neumann Problem.

$L^2$ Extension of $\bar\partial$-closed forms from a hypersurface

We establish $L^2$ extension theorems for $\bar \partial$-closed $(0,q)$-forms with values in a holomorphic line bundle with smooth Hermitian metric, from a smooth hypersurface on a Stein manifold. Our result extends (and gives a new, perhaps more classical, proof of) a theorem of Berndtsson on compact K\"ahler manifolds, which itself is a sharpening of the theorem of Koziarz. The proof makes use of the Kohn solution, which is the solution of an (interior) elliptic problem, to handle the well-known regularity issues. As such, our methods require the line bundle to be equipped with a smooth metric.

Bergman interpolation on finite Riemann surfaces. Part II: Poincar\'e-Hyperbolic Case

We formulate the Bergman-type interpolation problem on finite open Riemann surfaces covered by the unit disk. Our version of the interpolation problem generalizes Bergman-type interpolation problems previously studied by Seip, Berntsson, Ortega Cerd\`a, and a number of other authors. We then prove necessary and sufficient conditions for interpolation, and also some sufficient conditions under even weaker hypotheses. The results extend work of Ortega Cerd\`a, who resolved the case in which the boundary of the surface is pure $1$-dimensional. Our version of the interpolation problem effectively changes the geometry of the underlying space near the punctures, thereby linking in a crucial way with the previous article in this two-part series.

Bergman interpolation on finite Riemann surfaces. Part I: Asymptotically Flat Case

We study the Bergman space interpolation problem of open Riemann surfaces obtained from a compact Riemann surface by removing a finite number of points. We equip such a surface with what we call an asymptotically flat conformal metric, i.e., a complete metric with zero curvature outside a compact subset. We then establish necessary and sufficient conditions for interpolation in weighted Bergman spaces over asymptotically flat Riemann surfaces.

Potential Theoretic Hyperbolicity and $\mathbf{L^2}$ extension. Part I: Stein manifolds

We establish a new generalization of an $L^2$ extension theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi type. The improvement in the theorem is that it allows the usual curvature assumptions to be significantly weakened in certain favorable settings. The favorable settings come about, for example, when the underlying structure (e.g., the underlying manifold, or the holomorphic Hermitian line bundle whose sections are being extended) has certain potential theoretic positivity. The simplest case occurs when the underlying manifold supports a function with self-bounded gradient in the sense of McNeal, but there are other cases. We demonstrate the improvement over the usual Ohsawa-Takegoshi-type extension theorems through a number of examples.

Bargmann-Fock extension from Singular Hypersurfaces

We establish sufficient conditions for extension of weighted square integrable holomorphic functions from a possibly singular hypersurface to the ambient affine space. The norms we use are the so-called Bargmann-Fock norms, and thus there are restrictions on the singularities and the density of the hypersurface. Our sufficient conditions are that it has density less than 1, and is uniformly flat in a sense that extends to singular varieties the notion of uniform flatness introduced earlier. We present an example of Ohsawa showing that uniform flatness is not necessary for extension in the singular case, and find an example showing that, for rather different reasons, it is also not necessary for the smooth case. The latter answers in the negative a question posed in an earlier paper of the second author.

Geometry of Hermitian Algebraic Functions. Quotients of Squared Norms

Hermitian algebraic functions were introduced by Catlin and D'Angelo under the name of "globalizable metrics". Catlin and D'Angelo proved that any Hermitian algebraic function without non-trivial zeros is a quotient of squared norms, thus giving an answer to a Hermitian analogue of Hilbert's 17th problem in the non-degenerate case. The result was independently proved somewhat earlier by D. Quillen in a special case, and using different methods. In this paper, we characterize all Hermitian algebraic functions that are quotients of squared norms.

Interpolation and Sampling Hypersurfaces for weighted Bergman spaces on the unit ball

We present sufficient conditions on a smooth uniformly flat hypersurface W in the unit ball to be an interpolation hypersurface or a sampling hypersurface for generalized Bergman spaces associated to the unit ball with its Bergman metric. The conditions are phrased in terms of a geometric Beurling-type densities, similar to the densities defined for hypersurfaces in C^n by Ortega-Cerda, Schuster and the second author. For the case of sampling, our proofs are different than those in the C^n case; we use an approach closer in spirit to the work of Berndtsson and Ortega-Cerda in the 1-dimensional case. For the case of interpolation we use a modified version of the Ohsawa-Takegoshi method to carry out the interpolation in the situation where the density of W is a little less than optimal. For the general case, we use the same approach as in the C^n case, except that we use an improved dbar theorem, due to Ohsawa, to solve our Cousin problem with L^2 bounds. As in the case of C^n, it is expected that our sufficient conditions are also necessary.

Analytic inversion of adjunction: L^2 extension theorems with gain

We establish new results on weighted $L^2$ extension of holomorphic top forms with values in a holomorphic line bundle, from a smooth hypersurface cut out by a holomorphic function. The weights we use are determined by certain functions that we call denominators. We give a collection of examples of these denominators related to the divisor defined by the submanifold.

A universal metric for the canonical bundle of a holomorphic family of projective algebraic manifolds

We prove that the canonical bundle of any holomorphic family of compact complex algebraic manifolds carries a singular Hermitian metric having non-negative curvature current and such that every holomorphic section of the canonical bundle of the central fiber is L^2 with respect to this metric. This result was proved by Siu when the members of the family are general type, and used to establish the deformation invariance of plurigenera in that case. In fact, we prove our result in a more general setting of a smooth hypersurface with not-necessarily normal trivial bundle in a manifold that is Stein outside an analytic subvariety. Such a setting was first considered by Takayama. (In the case of a family, the normal bundle is trivial.) The method of proof involves an adaptation of recent work of Paun.

Division Theorems and Twisted Complexes

We prove new Skoda-type division, or ideal membership, theorems. We work in a geometric setting of line bundles over Kahler manifolds that are Stein away from an analytic subvariety. (This includes complex projective manifolds.) Our approach is to combine the twisted Bochner-Kodaira Identity, used in the Ohsawa-Takegoshi Theorem, with Skoda's basic estimate for the division problem. Techniques developed by McNeal and the author are then used to provide many examples of new division theorems. Among other applications, we give a modification of a recent result of Siu regarding effective finite generation of certain section rings.

A Takayama-type extension theorem

We prove a theorem on the extension of holomorphic sections of powers of adjoint bundles from submanifolds of complex codimension 1 having non-trivial normal bundle. The first such result, due to Takayama, considers the case where the canonical bundle is twisted by a line bundle that is a sum of a big and nef line bundle and a ${\mathbb Q}$-divisor that has kawamata log terminal singularites on the submanifold from which extension occurs. In this paper we weaken the positivity assumptions on the twisting line bundle to what we believe to be the minimal positivity hypotheses. The main new idea is an $L^2$ extension theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi type, in which twisted canonical sections are extended from submanifolds with non-trivial normal bundle.

Interpolation and Sampling on Riemann Surfaces

We find sufficient conditions for a discrete sequence to be interpolating or sampling for certain generalized Bergman spaces on open Riemann surfaces. As in previous work of Bendtsson, Ortega-Cerda, Seip, Wallsten and others, our conditions for interpolation and sampling are as follows: If a certain upper density of the sequence has value less that 1, then the sequence is interpolating, while if a certain lower density has value greater than 1, then the sequence is sampling. However, unlike previous work, we construct an infinite number of densities, naturally parameterized by $L^1_{loc} ([0,\infty))$. These densities provide (different) sufficient conditions for interpolation and sampling. As a consequence of this flexibility, we obtain new results even in the classical cases of the Bargmann-Fock space (of entire functions integrable with respect to a Gaussian weight) and the classical Bergman space of L^2 holomorphic functions on the unit disk.
