The tensor category for W(2,2)-vertex algebra

This paper studies the category $\mathcal{C}$ of grading-restricted $C_1$-cofinite generalized modules for the vertex operator algebra associated to the $W$-algebra $W(2,2)$. We first show that $\mathcal{C}$ is the same as the category of finite length modules whose simple composition factors are the irreducible highest weight $W(2,2)$--modules $L[r]$ of highest weight $(\frac{1-r}{2}, 0)$ for $r \in \mathbb{Z}_{> 0}$, and hence $\mathcal{C}$ carries a braided tensor category structure. Then we prove the fusion rules for the simple objects $L[r]$ are governed by the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ Clebsch--Gordan rule. In particular, we prove \[ L[r]\boxtimes L[s]\cong \bigoplus_{i=0}^{\min\{r,s\}-1} L[r+s-1-2i]. \] Using the fusion rules and a recent result of Etingof--Penneys, we establish the rigidity of $\mathcal{C}$. We also show the semisimple subcategory generated by the simple objects $L[r]$ is tensor equivalent to the category Rep $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ of finite dimensional $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-modules.

Classification of irreducible highest weight modules for the parafermion vertex algebras $N_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ at arbitrary level

Let $N^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ be the universal parafermion vertex algebra and $N_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ its simple quotient. We classify all irreducible highest weight $N^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-modules for every $k\neq 0$. We give a presentation of Zhu's algebra $A(N^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2))$ as a quotient of a polynomial algebra in four variables by an ideal generated by three explicit polynomials. This presentation also shows that $A(N^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2))$ is a free module of rank three over the polynomial subalgebra generated by the classes of the fields of weights two and three. The irreducible highest weight $N^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-modules are parametrized by a two-parameter family $L_k[x,y]$, $(x,y)\in\mathbb C^2$, constructed using a free-field realization. We also prove that each $N^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-module $L_k[x,y]$ can be realized as an $N^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-submodule of an irreducible weight module $M$ for the universal affine vertex algebra $V^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$. At non-integral admissible levels, we prove that $L_k[x,y]$ is an $N_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-module if and only if the associated $V^k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-module $M$ is an $L_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-module. This gives the classification of irreducible highest weight $N_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-modules at all non-integral admissible levels. We also classify the irreducible highest weight modules for the simple parafermion algebra $N_{-2}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ at the critical level. At positive integral levels, the irreducible $N_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-modules were previously classified by Arakawa, Lam, and Yamada.

Tensor category of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifold of Heisenberg vertex operator algebra and its applications

In this paper, we prove the category of finite length modules for the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifold $M(1)^+$ of the Heisenberg vertex operator algebra whose simple composition factors are $M(1)^\pm$ or $M(1,\lambda)$ for $\lambda \in \mathbb{C}^\times$ is a vertex and braided tensor category. Our strategy is to show these simple composition factors are $C_1$-cofinite and the category of finite length $M(1)^+$-modules is exactly the category of grading-restricted $C_1$-cofinite modules. We also determine the fusion product decompositions of simple objects and prove the rigidity of this category. As an application of the tensor category structure of $M(1)^+$-modules, we prove the category $\mathcal{C}_{-1}(sp(2n))$ of grading-restricted generalized modules for the simple affine vertex algebra $L_{-1}(sp(2n))$ is semisimple. For this, we first prove $M(1)^+$ and simple affine vertex algebra $L_{-\frac{1}{2}}(sp(2n))$ form a commutant pair in the simple minimal $W$-algebra $W_{-1}^{min}(sp(2n))$ for $n \geq 2$ and determine $W_{-1}^{min}(sp(2n))$ as well as its irreducible modules obtained from quantum Hamilton reduction as decompositions of $M(1)^+ \otimes L_{-\frac{1}{2}}(sp(2n))$-modules, then we show all the highest weight modules for $L_{-1}(sp(2n))$ in $\mathcal{C}_{-1}(sp(2n))$ are irreducible via the quantum Hamilton reduction. We also prove a Schur-Weyl duality between $L_{-1}(sp(2n))$ and $M(1)^+$ by showing they form a commutant pair in the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifold of the rank $n$ $\beta\gamma$ system, and then establish a braided reversed equivalence between the category $\mathcal{C}_{-1}(sp(2n))$ and the full subcategory of $C_1$-cofinite $M(1)^+$-modules consisting of direct sums of irreducible modules $M(1)^\pm$ and $M\big(1, \frac{s}{\sqrt{-2n}}\big)$ for $s \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$.

Vertex algebras related to regular representations of $SL_2$

We construct a family of potentially quasi-lisse (non-rational) vertex algebras, denoted by $\mathcal{C}_p$, $p \geq 2$, which are closely related to the vertex algebra of chiral differential operators on $SL(2)$ at level $-2+\frac{1}{p}$. We prove that for $p = 3$, there is an isomorphism between $\mathcal{C}_3$ and the affine vertex algebra $L_{-5/3}(\mathfrak{g}_2)$ from Deligne's series. Moreover, we also establish isomorphisms between $\mathcal{C}_4$ and $\mathcal{C}_5$ and certain affine ${W}$-algebras of types $F_4$ and $E_8$, respectively. In this way, we resolve the problem of decomposing certain conformal embeddings of affine vertex algebras into affine ${W}$-algebras. An important feature is that $\mathcal{C}_p$ is $\frac{1}{2} \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$-graded with finite-dimensional graded subspaces and convergent characters. Therefore, for all $p \geq 2$, we show that the characters of $\mathcal{C}_p$ exhibit modularity, supporting the conjectural quasi-lisse property.

Center of affine $\mathfrak{sl}_{2|1}$ at the critical level

In this article, we shall describe the center of the universal affine vertex superalgebra $V^{\kappa_c}(\mathfrak g)$ associated with $\mathfrak g=\mathfrak{sl}_{2|1}, \mathfrak {gl}_{2|1}$ at the critical level $\kappa_c$ and prove the conjecture of A. Molev and E. Ragoucy in this case. The center $\mathfrak{z}(V^{\kappa_c}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2|1}))$ turns out to be isomorphic to the large level limit $\ell \rightarrow \infty$ of a vertex subalgebra, called the parafermion vertex algebra $K^{\ell} (\mathfrak{sl}_2)$, of the affine vertex algebra $V^\ell(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$. The key ingredient of the proof is to understand the principal $W$-superalgebra $ W^{\kappa_c}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2|1})$ at the critical level. It relates the center $\mathfrak{z}(V^{\kappa_c}(\mathfrak{sl} _{2|1}))$ to $V^\infty(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ via the Kazama-Suzuki duality while it has a surprising coincidence with $V^{\kappa_c}(\mathfrak{gl}_{1|1})$, whose center has been recently described. Moreover, the centers $\mathfrak{z}(V^{\kappa_c}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2|1}))$ and $\mathfrak{z}(W^{\kappa_c}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2|1}))$ are proven to coincide as a byproduct. A general conjecture is proposed which describes the center $\mathfrak{z}(V^{\kappa_c}(\mathfrak{sl}_{n|m}))$ with $n>m$ as a large level limit of ``the dual side'', i.e., the parafermion-type subalgebras of $W$-algebras $ W^\ell(\mathfrak{sl}_{n}, \mathbb{O}_{[n-m,1^m]})$ associated with hook-type partitions $[n-m,1^m]$, known also as vertex algebras at the corner.

Nappi-Witten vertex operator algebra via inverse Quantum Hamiltonian Reduction

The representation theory of the Nappi-Witten VOA was initiated in arXiv:1104.3921 and arXiv:2011.14453. In this paper we use the technique of inverse quantum hamiltonian reduction to investigate the representation theory of the Nappi-Witten VOA $ V^1(\mathfrak h_4)$. We first prove that the quantum hamiltonian reduction of $ V^1(\mathfrak h_4)$ is the Heisenberg-Virasoro VOA $L^{HVir}$ of level zero investigated in arXiv:math/0201314 and arXiv:1405.1707. We invert the quantum hamiltonian reduction in this case and prove that $V^1(\mathfrak h_4)$ is realized as a vertex subalgebra of $L^{HVir} \otimes \Pi$, where $\Pi$ is a certain lattice-like vertex algebra. Using such an approach we shall realize all relaxed highest weight modules which were classified in arXiv:2011.14453. We show that every relaxed highest weight module, whose top components is neither highest nor lowest weight $\mathfrak h_4$-module, has the form $M_1 \otimes \Pi_{1} (\lambda)$ where $M_1$ is an irreducible, highest weight $L^{HVir}$-module and $\Pi_{1} (\lambda)$ is an irreducible weight $\Pi$-module. Using the fusion rules for $L^{HVir}$-modules and the previously developed methods of constructing logarithmic modules we are able to construct a family of logarithmic $V^1(\mathfrak h_4)$-modules. The Loewy diagrams of these logarithmic modules are completely analogous to the Loewy diagrams of projective modules of weight $L_k(\mathfrak{sl}(2))$-modules, so we expect that our logarithmic modules are also projective in a certain category of weight $ V^1(\mathfrak h_4)$-modules.

A method for describing the maximal ideal in universal affine vertex algebras at non-admissible levels

The problem of determining maximal ideals in universal affine vertex algebras is difficult for levels beyond admissible, since there are no simple character formulas which can be applied. Here we investigate when certain quotient $\mathcal V$ of universal affine vertex algebra $V^k(\mathfrak{g})$ is simple. We present a new method for proving simplicity of quotients of universal affine vertex algebras in the case of affine vertex algebra $L_{k_n}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2n})$ at level $k_n:=-\frac{2n+1}{2}$. In that way we describe the maximal ideal in $V^{k_n}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2n})$. For that purpose, we use the representation theory of minimal affine $W$-algebra $W^{min}_{k_{n+1}}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2n+2})$ developed in [2]. In particular, we use the embedding $L_{k_n}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2n}) \subset W^{min}_{k_{n+1}}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2n+2})$ and fusion rules for $L_{k_n}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2n})$--modules. We apply this result in the cases $n=3,4$ and prove that a maximal ideal is generated by one singular vector of conformal weight $4$. As a byproduct, we classify irreducible modules in the category $\mathcal{O}$ for the simple affine vertex algebra $L_{-7/2}(\mathfrak{sl}_{6})$.

Weight module classifications for Bershadsky--Polyakov algebras

The Bershadsky--Polyakov algebras are the subregular quantum hamiltonian reductions of the affine vertex operator algebras associated with $\mathfrak{sl}_3$. In arXiv:2007.00396 [math.QA], we realised these algebras in terms of the regular reduction, Zamolodchikov's W$_3$-algebra, and an isotropic lattice vertex operator algebra. We also proved that a natural construction of relaxed highest-weight Bershadsky--Polyakov modules gives modules that are generically irreducible. Here, we prove that this construction, when combined with spectral flow twists, gives a complete set of irreducible weight modules whose weight spaces are finite-dimensional. This gives a simple independent proof of the main classification theorem of arXiv:2007.03917 [math.RT] for nondegenerate admissible levels and extends this classification to a category of weight modules. We also deduce the classification for the nonadmissible level $\mathsf{k}=-\frac{7}{3}$, which is new.

On irreducibility of modules of Whittaker type: twisted modules and nonabelian orbifolds

In arXiv:1811.04649, we extended the Dong-Mason theorem on irreducibility of modules for cyclic orbifold vertex algebras to the entire category weak modules and applied this result to Whittaker modules. In this paper we present further generalizations of these results for nonabelian orbifolds of vertex operator superalgebras. Let $V$ be a vertex superalgebra with a countable dimension and let $G$ be a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(V)$. Assume that $h\in Z(G)$ where $Z(G)$ is the center of the group $G$. For any irreducible $h$-twisted (weak) $V$-module $M$, we prove that if $M\not\cong g\circ M$ for all $g\in G$ then $M$ is also irreducible as $V^G$-module. We also apply this result to examples and give irreducibility of modules of Whittaker type for orbifolds of Neveu-Schwarz vertex superalgebras, Heisenberg vertex algebras, Virasoro vertex operator algebra and Heisenberg-Virasoro vertex algebra.

Tensor category $KL_k(\mathfrak{sl}_{2n})$ via minimal affine $W$-algebras at the non-admissible level $k =-\frac{2n+1}{2}$

We prove that $KL_k(\mathfrak{sl}_m)$ is a semi-simple, rigid braided tensor category for all even $m\ge 4$, and $k= -\frac{m+1}{2}$ which generalizes result from arXiv:2103.02985 obtained for $m=4$. Moreover, all modules in $KL_k(\mathfrak{sl}_m)$ are simple-currents and they appear in the decomposition of conformal embeddings $\mathfrak{gl}_m \hookrightarrow \mathfrak{sl}_{m+1} $ at level $ k= - \frac{m+1}{2}$ from arXiv:1509.06512. For this we inductively identify minimal affine $W$-algebra $ W_{k-1} (\mathfrak{sl}_{m+2}, \theta)$ as simple current extension of $L_{k}(\mathfrak{sl}_m) \otimes \mathcal H \otimes \mathcal M$, where $\mathcal H$ is the rank one Heisenberg vertex algebra, and $\mathcal M$ the singlet vertex algebra for $c=-2$. The proof uses previously obtained results for the tensor categories of singlet algebra from arXiv:2202.05496. We also classify all irreducible ordinary modules for $ W_{k-1} (\mathfrak{sl}_{m+2}, \theta)$. The semi-simple part of the category of $ W_{k-1} (\mathfrak{sl}_{m+2}, \theta)$-modules comes from $KL_{k-1}(\mathfrak{sl}_{m+2})$, using quantum Hamiltonian reduction, but this $W$-algebra also contains indecomposable ordinary modules.

New approaches for studying conformal embeddings and collapsing levels for $W$--algebras

In this paper we prove a general result saying that under certain hypothesis an embedding of an affine vertex algebra into an affine $W$--algebra is conformal if and only if their central charges coincide. This result extends our previous result obtained in the case of minimal affine $W$-algebras. We also find a sufficient condition showing that certain conformal levels are collapsing. This new condition enables us to find some levels $k$ where $W_k(sl(N), x, f )$ collapses to its affine part when $f$ is of hook or rectangular type. Our methods can be applied to non-admissible levels. In particular, we prove Creutzig's conjecture on the conformal embedding in the hook type $W$-algebra $W_k(sl(n+m), x, f_{m,n})$ of its affine vertex subalgebra. Quite surprisingly, the problem of showing that certain conformal levels are not collapsing turns out to be very difficult. In the cases when $k$ is admissible and conformal, we prove that $W_k(sl(n+m), x, f_{m,n})$ is not collapsing. Then, by generalizing the results on semi-simplicity of conformal embeddings from our previous papers, we find many cases in which $W_k(sl(n+m), x, f_{m,n})$ is semi-simple as a module for its affine subalgebra at conformal level and we provide explicit decompositions.

Whittaker modules for $\widehat{\mathfrak gl}$ and $\mathcal W_{1+ \infty}$-modules which are not tensor products

We consider the Whittaker modules $M_{1}(\lambda,\mu)$ for the Weyl vertex algebra $M$, constructed in arXiv:1811.04649, where it was proved that these modules are irreducible for each finite cyclic orbifold $M^{\Bbb Z_n}$. In this paper, we consider the modules $M_{1}(\lambda,\mu)$ as modules for the ${\Bbb Z}$-orbifold of $M$, denoted by $M^0$. $M^0$ is isomorphic to the vertex algebra $\mathcal W_{1+\infty, c=-1} = \mathcal M(2) \otimes M_1(1)$ which is the tensor product of the Heisenberg vertex algebra $M_1(1)$ and the singlet algebra $\mathcal M(2)$. Furthermore, these modules are also modules of the Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak gl}$ with central charge $c=-1$. We prove they are reducible as $\widehat{\mathfrak gl}$-modules (and therefore also as $M^0$-modules), and we completely describe their irreducible quotients $L(d,\lambda,\mu)$. We show that $L(d,\lambda,\mu)$ in most cases are not tensor product modules for the vertex algebra $ \mathcal M(2) \otimes M_1(1)$. Moreover, we show that all constructed modules are typical in the sense that they are irreducible for the Heisenberg-Virasoro vertex subalgebra of $\mathcal W_{1+\infty, c=-1}$.

Relaxed and logarithmic modules of $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_3}$

In [8], the affine vertex algebra $L_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ is realized as a subalgebra of the vertex algebra $Vir_c \otimes \Pi(0)$, where $Vir_c$ is a simple Virasoro vertex algebra and $\Pi(0)$ is a half-lattice vertex algebra. Moreover, all $L_k(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$--modules (including, modules in the category $KL_k$, relaxed highest weight modules and logarithmic modules) are realized as $Vir_c \otimes \Pi(0)$--modules. A natural question is the generalization of this construction in higher rank. In the current paper, we study the case $\mathfrak{g}= \mathfrak{sl}_3$ and present realization of the VOA $L_k(\mathfrak g)$ for $k \notin {\mathbb Z}_{\ge 0}$ as a vertex subalgebra of $\mathcal{W}_k \otimes \mathcal S \otimes \Pi(0)$, where $\mathcal{W}_k$ is a simple Breshadsky Polykov vertex algebra and $\mathcal S$ is the $\beta \gamma$ vertex algebra. We use this realization to study ordinary modules, relaxed highest weight modules and logarithmic modules. We prove the irreducibility of all our relaxed highest weight modules having finite-dimensional weight spaces (whose top components are Gelfand-Tsetlin modules). The irreducibility of relaxed highest weight modules with infinite-dimensional weight spaces is proved up to a conjecture on the irreducibility of certain $\mathfrak g$--modules which are not Gelfand-Tsetlin modules. The next problem that we consider is the realization of logarithmic modules. We first analyse the free-field realization of $\mathcal{W}_k$ from [11] and obtain a realization of logarithmic modules for $\mathcal{W}_k$ of nilpotent rank two at most admissible levels. Using logarithmic modules for the $\beta \gamma$ VOA, we are able to construct logarithmic $L_k(\mathfrak g)$--modules of rank three.

A duality between vertex superalgebras $L_{-3/2}(\mathfrak{osp}(1\vert 2))$ and $\mathcal V^{(2)}$ and generalizations to logarithmic vertex algebras

We introduce a subalgebra $\overline F$ of the Clifford vertex superalgebra ($bc$ system) which is completely reducible as a $L^{Vir} (-2,0)$-module, $C_2$-cofinite, but it is not conformal and it is not isomorphic to the symplectic fermion algebra $\mathcal{SF}(1)$. We show that $\mathcal{SF}(1)$ and $\overline{F}$ are in an interesting duality, since $\overline{F}$ can be equipped with the structure of a $\mathcal{SF}(1)$-module and vice versa. Using the decomposition of $\overline F$ and a free-field realization from arXiv:1711.11342, we decompose $L_k(\mathfrak{osp}(1\vert 2))$ at the critical level $k=-3/2$ as a module for $L_k(\mathfrak{sl}(2))$. The decomposition of $L_k(\mathfrak{osp}(1\vert 2))$ is exactly the same as of the $N=4$ superconformal vertex algebra with central charge $c=-9$, denoted by $\mathcal V^{(2)}$. Using the duality between $\overline{F}$ and $\mathcal{SF}(1)$, we prove that $L_k(\mathfrak{osp}(1\vert 2))$ and $\mathcal V^{(2)}$ are in the duality of the same type. As an application, we construct and classify all irreducible $L_k(\mathfrak{osp}(1\vert 2))$-modules in the category $\mathcal O$ and the category $\mathcal R$ which includes relaxed highest weight modules. We also describe the structure of the parafermion algebra $N_{-3/2}(\mathfrak{osp}(1\vert 2))$ as a $N_{-3/2}(\mathfrak{sl}(2))$-module. We extend this example, and for each $p \ge 2$, we introduce a non-conformal vertex algebra $\mathcal A^{(p)}_{new}$ and show that $\mathcal A^{(p)}_{new} $ is isomorphic to the doublet vertex algebra as a module for the Virasoro algebra. We also construct the vertex algebra $ \mathcal V^{(p)} _{new}$ which is isomorphic to the logarithmic vertex algebra $\mathcal V^{(p)}$ as a module for $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}(2)$.

On the semisimplicity of the category $KL_k$ for affine Lie superalgebras

We study the semisimplicity of the category $KL_k$ for affine Lie superalgebras and provide a super analog of certain results from arXiv:1801.09880. Let $KL_k^{fin}$ be the subcategory of $KL_k$ consisting of ordinary modules on which the Cartan subalgebra acts semisimply. We prove that $KL_k^{fin}$ is semisimple when 1) $k$ is a collapsing level, 2) $W_k(\mathfrak{g}, \theta)$ is rational, 3) $W_k(\mathfrak{g}, \theta)$ is semisimple in a certain category. The analysis of the semisimplicity of $KL_k$ is subtler than in the Lie algebra case, since in super case $KL_k$ can contain indecomposable modules. We are able to prove that in many cases when $KL_k^{fin}$ is semisimple we indeed have $KL_k^{fin}=KL_k$, which therefore excludes indecomposable and logarithmic modules in $KL_k$. In these cases we are able to prove that there is a conformal embedding $W \hookrightarrow V_k(\mathfrak{g})$ with $W$ semisimple (see Section 10). In particular, we prove the semisimplicity of $KL_k$ for $\mathfrak{g}=sl(2\vert 1)$ and $k = -\frac{m+1}{m+2}$, $m \in {\mathbb Z}_{\ge 0}$. For $\mathfrak{g} =sl(m \vert 1)$, we prove that $KL_k$ is semisimple for $k=-1$, but for $k=1$ we show that it is not semisimple by constructing indecomposable highest weight modules in $KL_k^{fin}$.

On the representation theory of the vertex algebra $L_{-5/2}(sl(4))$

We study the representation theory of non-admissible simple affine vertex algebra $L_{-5/2} (sl(4))$. We determine an explicit formula for the singular vector of conformal weight four in the universal affine vertex algebra $V^{-5/2} (sl(4))$, and show that it generates the maximal ideal in $V^{-5/2} (sl(4))$. We classify irreducible $L_{-5/2} (sl(4))$--modules in the category ${\mathcal O}$, and determine the fusion rules between irreducible modules in the category of ordinary modules $KL_{-5/2}$. It turns out that this fusion algebra is isomorphic to the fusion algebra of $KL_{-1}$. We also prove that $KL_{-5/2}$ is a semi-simple, rigid braided tensor category. In our proofs we use the notion of collapsing level for the affine $\mathcal{W}$--algebra, and the properties of conformal embedding $gl(4) \hookrightarrow sl(5)$ at level $k=-5/2$ from arXiv:1509.06512. We show that $k=-5/2$ is a collapsing level with respect to the subregular nilpotent element $f_{subreg}$, meaning that the simple quotient of the affine $\mathcal{W}$--algebra $W^{-5/2}(sl(4), f_{subreg})$ is isomorphic to the Heisenberg vertex algebra $M_J(1)$. We prove certain results on vanishing and non-vanishing of cohomology for the quantum Hamiltonian reduction functor $H_{f_{subreg}}$. It turns out that the properties of $H_{f_{subreg}}$ are more subtle than in the case of minimal reducition.

The $N=1$ super Heisenberg-Virasoro vertex algebra at level zero

We study the representation theory of the N=1 super Heisenberg-Virasoro vertex algebra at level zero, which extends the previous work on the Heisenberg-Virasoro vertex algebra arXiv:math/0201314, arXiv:1405.1707 and arXiv:1703.00531 to the super case. We calculated all characters of irreducible highest weight representations by investigating certain Fock space representations. Bershadsky-Polyakov vertex algebras at positive integer levels and duality
