Deep 3D Face Identification

We propose a novel 3D face recognition algorithm using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) and a 3D augmentation technique. The performance of 2D face recognition algorithms has significantly increased by leveraging the representational power of deep neural networks and the use of large-scale labeled training data. As opposed to 2D face recognition, training discriminative deep features for 3D face recognition is very difficult due to the lack of large-scale 3D face datasets. In this paper, we show that transfer learning from a CNN trained on 2D face images can effectively work for 3D face recognition by fine-tuning the CNN with a relatively small number of 3D facial scans. We also propose a 3D face augmentation technique which synthesizes a number of different facial expressions from a single 3D face scan. Our proposed method shows excellent recognition results on Bosphorus, BU-3DFE, and 3D-TEC datasets, without using hand-crafted features. The 3D identification using our deep features also scales well for large databases.

Exploring Model Predictive Control to Generate Optimal Control Policies for HRI Dynamical Systems

We model Human-Robot-Interaction (HRI) scenarios as linear dynamical systems and use Model Predictive Control (MPC) with mixed integer constraints to generate human-aware control policies. We motivate the approach by presenting two scenarios. The first involves an assistive robot that aims to maximize productivity while minimizing the human's workload, and the second involves a listening humanoid robot that manages its eye contact behavior to maximize "connection" and minimize social "awkwardness" with the human during the interaction. Our simulation results show that the robot generates useful behaviors as it finds control policies to minimize the specified cost function. Further, we implement the second scenario on a humanoid robot and test the eye contact scenario with 48 human participants to demonstrate and evaluate the desired controller behavior. The humanoid generated 25% more eye contact when it was told to maximize connection over when it was told to maximize awkwardness. However, despite showing the desired behavior, there was no statistical difference between the participant's perceived connection with the humanoid.

Detection of Single Nanoparticles Using the Dissipative Interaction in a High-Q Microcavity

Ultrasensitive optical detection of nanometer-scaled particles is highly desirable for applications in early-stage diagnosis of human diseases, environmental monitoring, and homeland security, but remains extremely difficult due to ultralow polarizabilities of small-sized, low-index particles. Optical whispering-gallery-mode microcavities, which can enhance significantly the light-matter interaction, have emerged as promising platforms for label-free detection of nanoscale objects. Different from the conventional whispering-gallery-mode sensing relying on the reactive (i.e., dispersive) interaction, here we propose and demonstrate to detect single lossy nanoparticles using the dissipative interaction in a high-$Q$ toroidal microcavity. In the experiment, detection of single gold nanorods in an aqueous environment is realized by monitoring simultaneously the linewidth change and shift of the cavity mode. The experimental result falls within the theoretical prediction. Remarkably, the reactive and dissipative sensing methods are evaluated by setting the probe wavelength on and off the surface plasmon resonance to tune the absorption of nanorods, which demonstrates clearly the great potential of the dissipative sensing method to detect lossy nanoparticles. Future applications could also combine the dissipative and reactive sensing methods, which may provide better characterizations of nanoparticles.

PBF: A New Privacy-Aware Billing Framework for Online Electric Vehicles with Bidirectional Auditability

Recently an online electric vehicle (OLEV) concept has been introduced, where vehicles are propelled through the wirelessly transmitted electrical power from the infrastructure installed under the road while moving. The absence of secure-and-fair billing is one main hurdle to widely adopt this promising technology. This paper introduces a secure and privacy-aware fair billing framework for OLEV on the move through the charging plates installed under the road. We first propose two extreme lightweight mutual authentication mechanisms, a direct authentication and a hash chain-based authentication between vehicles and the charging plates that can be used for different vehicular speeds on the road. Second we propose a secure and privacy-aware wireless power transfer on move for the vehicles with bidirectional auditability guarantee by leveraging game-theoretic approach. Each charging plate transfers a fixed amount of energy to the vehicle and bills the vehicle in a privacy-aware way accordingly. Our protocol guarantees secure, privacy-aware, and fair billing mechanism for the OLEVs while receiving electric power from the road. Moreover our proposed framework can play a vital role in eliminating the security and privacy challenges in the deployment of power transfer technology to the OLEVs.

A note on a system of cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations in one space dimension

We study the Cauchy problem for a system of cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations in one space dimension. Under a suitable structural condition on the nonlinearity, we will show that the solution exists globally and decays of the order $O(t^{-1/2})$ in $L^\infty$ as $t$ tends to infinity without the condition of a compact support on the Cauchy data which was assumed in the previous works.

Assessing Whole-Body Operational Space Control in a Point-Foot Series Elastic Biped: Balance on Split Terrain and Undirected Walking

In this paper we present advancements in control and trajectory generation for agile behavior in bipedal robots. We demonstrate that Whole-Body Operational Space Control (WBOSC), developed a few years ago, is well suited for achieving two types of agile behaviors, namely, balancing on a high pitch split terrain and achieving undirected walking on flat terrain. The work presented here is the first implementation of WBOSC on a biped robot, and more specifically a biped robot with series elastic actuators. We present and analyze a new algorithm that dynamically balances point foot robots by choosing footstep placements. Dealing with the naturally unstable dynamics of these type of systems is a difficult problem that requires both the controller and the trajectory generation algorithm to operate quickly and efficiently. We put forth a comprehensive development and integration effort: the design and construction of the biped system and experimental infrastructure, a customization of WBOSC for the agile behaviors, and new trajectory generation algorithms. Using this custom built controller, we conduct, for first time, an experiment in which a biped robot balances in a high pitch split terrain, demonstrating our ability to precisely regulate internal forces using force sensing feedback techniques. Finally, we demonstrate the stabilizing capabilities of our online trajectory generation algorithm in the physics-based simulator and through physical experiments with a planarized locomotion setup.

A New Analytic Galactic Luminosity Profile Function

In 2010 Spergel introduced an alternative to the traditional Sersic form for galactic luminosity profiles based on modified Bessel functions of the second kind. His motivation was the desire for an accurate one-parameter profile form with a simple Fourier transform (in contrast to the Fourier transform of the Sersic profile which can't be written in closed form), but we have found that the Spergel profile almost universally makes integrals easier when it replaces the Sersic profile in the integrand. In the original paper on the subject Spergel noted that his profile seems to fit galaxies on average just as well as Sersic's. Here we make this observation quantitative by comparing the residuals from fitting Sersic and Spergel forms to data. We find that the Spergel profile actually fits better than the Sersic for a random sample of 16 galaxies.

A note on decay rates of solutions to a system of cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equations in one space dimension

We consider the initial value problem for a system of cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equations with different masses in one space dimension. Under a suitable structural condition on the nonlinearity, we will show that the small amplitude solution exists globally and decays of the rate $O(t^{-1/2}(\log t)^{-1/2})$ in $L^\infty$ as $t$ tends to infinity, if the system satisfies certain mass relations.

Global existence of small amplitude solutions to one-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems with different masses

We study the Cauchy problem for systems of cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with different masses in one space dimension. Under a suitable structural condition on the nonlinearity, we will show that the solution exists globally and decays of the rate $O(t^{-(1/2-1/p)})$ in $L^p$, $p\in[2,\infty]$ as $t$ tends to infinity even in the case of mass resonance, if the Cauchy data are sufficiently small, smooth and compactly supported.

Black Brane World from Gravitating Half $σ$-lump

We study O($N+1$) nonlinear $σ$-model in $(p+1+N)$-dimensional curved spacetime with negative cosmological constant, and find a new $σ$-lump solution with half-integer winding and divergent energy. When the spatial structure of $N$ extra-dimensions is determined by this global defect, a black $σp$-brane surrounded by the degenerated horizon is formed and its near-horizon geometry is identified as a warp geometry of cigar type.
