A Forward Reachability Perspective on Control Barrier Functions and Discount Factors in Reachability Analysis

Control invariant sets are crucial for various methods that aim to design safe control policies for systems whose state constraints must be satisfied over an indefinite time horizon. In this article, we explore the connections among reachability, control invariance, and Control Barrier Functions (CBFs). Unlike prior formulations based on backward reachability concepts, we establish a strong link between these three concepts by examining the inevitable Forward Reachable Tube (FRT), which is the set of states such that every trajectory reaching the FRT must have passed through a given initial set of states. First, our findings show that the inevitable FRT is a robust control invariant set if it has a continuously differentiable boundary. If the boundary is not differentiable, the FRT may lose invariance. We also show that any robust control invariant set including the initial set is a superset of the FRT if the boundary of the invariant set is differentiable. Next, we formulate a differential game between the control and disturbance, where the inevitable FRT is characterized by the zero-superlevel set of the value function. By incorporating a discount factor in the cost function of the game, the barrier constraint of the CBF naturally arises in the Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equation and determines the optimal policy. The resulting FRT value function serves as a CBF-like function, and conversely, any valid CBF is also a forward reachability value function. We further prove that any $C^1$ supersolution of the HJ equation for the FRT value functions is a valid CBF and characterizes a robust control invariant set that outer-approximates the FRT. Building on this property, finally, we devise a novel method that learns neural control barrier functions, which learn an control invariant superset of the FRT of a given initial set.

Compact moduli of elliptic surfaces with a multiple fiber

Motivated by Miranda and Ascher--Bejleri's works on compactifications of the moduli space of rational elliptic surfaces with a section, we study constructions and boundaries of compact moduli spaces of elliptic surfaces with a multiple fiber. Particular emphasis is placed on rational elliptic surfaces without a section and on Dolgachev surfaces. Our main goal is to understand the limit surfaces when a multiple fiber degenerates into an additive type singular fiber, via $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothings of slc surfaces.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for Reach-Avoid-Stay Problems

Reach-Avoid-Stay (RAS) tasks are essential in applications where systems must safely reach a target set and remain within it under all bounded disturbances. Existing approaches either struggle to compute the maximal robust RAS set, the set of all states from which the RAS task is achievable, or are limited in handling general dynamic systems. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a two-step deep reinforcement learning framework that jointly learns the maximal robust RAS set and the corresponding control policy. The first step identifies the maximal robust control-invariant set within the target set and derives a policy that ensures the system remains within it. The second step computes the maximal robust reach-avoid (RA) set using this invariant set as the target, and it is proven that this RA set is equivalent to the maximal robust RAS set. Leveraging this result, a switching policy is constructed from the two step-wise policies, which constitutes a valid policy guaranteeing completion of the RAS task. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework (1) computes the exact maximal robust RAS set in the absence of training errors, yielding the least restrictive RAS policy, and (2) identifies the RAS set with high accuracy while outperforming baseline methods on RAS tasks.

Extending and Unifying the Fundamental Tasks of Hamilton-Jacobi Reachability Analysis

In this work, we introduce the generalized reach-avoid (GRA) task, which both extends and unifies the canonical tasks of Hamilton-Jacobi Reachability (HJR). We show that the GRA not only serves as a common primitive in this class of fundamental tasks, but also strictly extends the fundamental tasks that can be solved with HJR. Moreover, the GRA formulation enables one to compute the value functions of certain composite tasks, including ones from timed temporal logic, by decomposing the value function of the composite task into value functions of GRA tasks. We additionally show that the GRA is also a natural primitive to consider from a PDE perspective, as it can be used to represent all sufficiently regular solutions of the HJ-PDE that is canonical to HJR. Collectively, the results in this work show the theoretical and practical utility of this task within the increasingly important framework of HJR.

Geometry of regular semisimple Lusztig varieties

Lusztig varieties are subvarieties in flag manifolds $G/B$ associated to an element $w$ in the Weyl group $W$ and an element $x$ in $G$, introduced in Lusztig's papers on character sheaves. We study the geometry of these varieties when $x$ is regular semisimple. In the first part, we establish that they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, of pure expected dimension and have rational singularities. We then show that the cohomology of ample line bundles vanishes in positive degrees, in arbitrary characteristic. This extends to nef line bundles when the base field has characteristic zero or sufficiently large characteristic. Along the way, we prove that Lusztig varieties are Frobenius split in positive characteristic and that their open cells are affine. We also prove that the open cells in Deligne-Lusztig varieties are affine, settling a question that has been open since the foundational paper of Deligne and Lusztig. In the second part, we explore their relationship with regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. Both varieties admit Tymoczko's dot action of $W$ on their (intersection) cohomology. We associate to each element $w$ in $W$ a Hessenberg space using the tangent cone of the Schubert variety associated with $w$, and show that the cohomology of the associated regular semisimple Lusztig varieties and Hessenberg varieties is isomorphic as graded $W$-representations when they are smooth. This relationship extends to the level of varieties: we construct a flat degeneration of regular semisimple Lusztig varieties to regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. In particular, this proves a conjecture of Abreu and Nigro on the homeomorphism types of regular semisimple Lusztig varieties in type $A$, and generalizes it to arbitrary Lie types.

Characterization and Analysis of Emergency Landing Flight Envelopes with Graded Safety Specifications

Emergency landing flight envelope analysis traditionally adopts a binary notion of safety, whereby a trajectory is safe only if state constraints are satisfied pointwise in time. In practice, ensuring a successful landing requires recognizing that aircraft operation spans a continuum in the state space from the nominal to the critical regime. Between these regimes lies a degraded regime of states outside nominal operation that may be visited only for limited durations. Safety is therefore inherently graded, in the sense that limited exposure to degraded states may be tolerated, and must be assessed using a trajectory-dependent criterion rather than a purely pointwise-in-time one. This paper develops a Hamilton-Jacobi reachability framework for analyzing emergency landing flight envelopes under this graded notion of safety. Safety is encoded through a soft constraint defined by a designer-specified continuous violation cost function that assigns zero cost in the nominal regime and larger cost to more safety-critical off-nominal states. We introduce a general class of state- and time-dependent violation cost functions and establish monotonicity and continuity properties that characterize how the flight envelope varies with the cost of off-nominal operation. These results provide a principled sensitivity analysis linking safety conservativeness to operational capability. Building on this analysis, we propose a synthesis algorithm for parameterized violation cost functions in this class. The algorithm provably converges to the least conservative parameter under which a prescribed off-nominal safety requirement is satisfied. Numerical results for a fixed-wing emergency landing scenario under propulsion failure demonstrate the sensitivity properties and validate the algorithm.

Chow and cohomology rings of moduli stacks of plane quartics

This paper studies the Chow and cohomology rings of the Hacking moduli stack $\mathcal{P}^{\mathrm{H}}$ of plane quartics. We construct a smooth proper Deligne--Mumford stack resolving the Calabi--Yau wall crossing between the KSBA and K-moduli compactifications for plane quartics via stack-theoretic weighted blowups. Its coarse moduli space is, up to normalization, the fiber product of the natural diagram relating the KSBA, K-moduli, and boundary polarized Calabi--Yau compactifications. From this, we compute the Poincaré polynomial of $\mathcal{P}^{\mathrm{H}}$, show that the cycle class map is an isomorphism with rational coefficients, and determine generators and relations for its Chow ring in terms of tautological classes. Analogous results are established for the GIT and K-moduli stacks.

One Is Not Enough: How People Use Multiple AI Models in Everyday Life

People increasingly use multiple Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) concurrently, selecting each based on its perceived strengths. This cross-platform practice creates coordination challenges: adapting prompts to different interfaces, calibrating trust against inconsistent behaviors, and navigating separate conversation histories. Prior HCI research focused on single-agent interactions, leaving multi-MLLM orchestration underexplored. Through a diary study and semi-structured interviews (N=10), we examine how individuals organize work across competing AI systems. Our findings reveal that users construct primary and secondary hierarchies among models that shift over usage context. They also develop personalized switching patterns triggered by task aggregation to adjust effort and latency, and output credibility. These insights inform future tool design opportunities, supporting users to coordinate multi-MLLM workflows.

Evaluating Visual Prompts with Eye-Tracking Data for MLLM-Based Human Activity Recognition

Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as foundation models for IoT applications such as human activity recognition (HAR). However, directly applying high-frequency and multi-dimensional sensor data, such as eye-tracking data, leads to information loss and high token costs. To mitigate this, we investigate a visual prompting strategy that transforms sensor signals into data visualization images as an input to multimodal LLMs (MLLMs) using eye-tracking data. We conducted a systematic evaluation of MLLM-based HAR across three public eye-tracking datasets using three visualization types of timeline, heatmap, and scanpath, under varying temporal window sizes. Our findings suggest that visual prompting provides a token-efficient and scalable representation for eye-tracking data, highlighting its potential to enable MLLMs to effectively reason over high-frequency sensor signals in IoT contexts.

Automorphisms and deformations of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties

We show that regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties can have moduli. To be precise, suppose $X$ is a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety of codimension $1$ in the flag variety $G/B$, where $G$ is a simple algebraic group of rank $r$ over $\mathbb{C}$ and $B$ is a Borel subgroup. We show that the space~$\mathrm{H}^1(X,TX)$ of first order deformations of $X$ has dimension $r-1$ except in type $A_2$. (In type $A_2$, the Hessenberg varieties in question are all isomorphic to the permutohedral toric surface, and $\dim\mathrm{H}^1(X,TX) = 0$.) Moreover, we show that the Kodaira--Spencer map $\mathfrak{g}\to \mathrm{H}^1(X,TX)$ is onto, that the identity component of the automorphism group of $X$ is a maximal torus of $G$, and that $\mathrm{H}^i(X,TX) = 0$ for $i \geq 2$. Along the way, we prove several theorems of independent interest about the cohomology of homogeneous vector bundles on~$G/B$. In type $A$, we can give an even more precise statement determining when two codimension $1$ regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties in $G/B$ are isomorphic. We also compute the automorphism groups explicitly in type~$A_{n-1}$ in the terms of stabilizer subgroups of the action of the symmetric group $S_{n}$ on the moduli space $M_{0,n+1}$ of smooth genus $0$ curves with $n + 1$ marked points. Using this, we describe the moduli stack of the regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties $X$ explicitly as a quotient stack of $M_{0,n+1}$. We prove several analogous results for Hessenberg varieties in generalized flag varieties $G/P$, where $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$. In type $A$, these results are used in the proofs of the results for $G/B$, but they are also of independent interest because the associated moduli stacks are related directly to the action of $S_n$ on $M_{0,n}$.

Characteristic polynomial of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ and log-concavity

Motivated by Stanley's generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph to the chromatic symmetric function, we introduce the characteristic polynomial of a representation of the symmetric group, or more generally, of a symmetric function. When the representation arises from geometry, the coefficients of its characteristic polynomial tend to form a log-concave sequence. To illustrate, we investigate explicit examples, including the $n$-fold products of the projective spaces, the GIT moduli spaces of points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ and Hessenberg varieties. Our main focus lies on the cohomology of the moduli space of pointed rational curves, for which we prove asymptotic formulas of its characteristic polynomial and establish asymptotic log-concavity.

A Hamilton-Jacobi Reachability Framework with Soft Constraints for Safety-Critical Systems

Traditional reachability methods provide formal guarantees of safety under bounded disturbances. However, they strictly enforce state constraints as inviolable, which can result in overly conservative or infeasible solutions in complex operational scenarios. Many constraints encountered in practice, such as bounds on battery state of charge in electric vehicles, recommended speed envelopes, and comfort constraints in passenger-carrying vehicles, are inherently soft. Soft constraints allow temporary violations within predefined safety margins to accommodate uncertainty and competing operational demands, albeit at a cost such as increased wear or higher operational expenses. This paper introduces a novel soft-constrained reachability framework that extends Hamilton-Jacobi reachability analysis for the formal verification of safety-critical systems subject to both hard and soft constraints. Specifically, the framework characterizes a subset of the state space, referred to as the soft-constrained reach-avoid set, from which the system is guaranteed to reach a desired set safely, under worst-case disturbances, while ensuring that cumulative soft-constraint violations remain within a user-specified budget. The framework comprises two principal components: (i) an augmented-state model with an auxiliary budget state that tracks soft-constraint violations, and (ii) a regularization-based approximation of the discontinuous Hamilton-Jacobi value function associated with the reach-avoid differential game studied herein. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated through numerical examples involving the landing of a simple point-mass model and a fixed-wing aircraft executing an emergency descent, both under wind disturbances. The simulation results validate the framework's ability to simultaneously manage both hard and soft constraints in safety-critical settings

Understanding the Impact of Spatial Immersion in Web Data Stories

An increasing number of web articles engage the reader with the feeling of being immersed in the data space. However, the exact characteristics of spatial immersion in the context of visual storytelling remain vague. For example, what are the common design patterns of data stories with spatial immersion? How do they affect the reader's experience? To gain a deeper understanding of the subject, we collected 23 distinct data stories with spatial immersion, and identified six design patterns, such as cinematic camera shots and transitions, intuitive data representations, realism, naturally moving elements, direct manipulation of camera or visualization, and dynamic dimension. Subsequently, we designed four data stories and conducted a crowdsourced user study comparing three design variations (static, animated, and immersive). Our results suggest that data stories with the design patterns for spatial immersion are more interesting and persuasive than static or animated ones, but no single condition was deemed more understandable or trustworthy.

Certifiable Reachability Learning Using a New Lipschitz Continuous Value Function

We propose a new reachability learning framework for high-dimensional nonlinear systems, focusing on reach-avoid problems. These problems require computing the reach-avoid set, which ensures that all its elements can safely reach a target set despite disturbances within pre-specified bounds. Our framework has two main parts: offline learning of a newly designed reachavoid value function, and post-learning certification. Compared to prior work, our new value function is Lipschitz continuous and its associated Bellman operator is a contraction mapping, both of which improve the learning performance. To ensure deterministic guarantees of our learned reach-avoid set, we introduce two efficient post-learning certification methods. Both methods can be used online for real-time local certification or offline for comprehensive certification. We validate our framework in a 12-dimensional crazyflie drone racing hardware experiment and a simulated 10-dimensional highway take-over example.

Infinite-Horizon Reach-Avoid Zero-Sum Games via Deep Reinforcement Learning

In this paper, we consider the infinite-horizon reach-avoid zero-sum game problem, where the goal is to find a set in the state space, referred to as the reach-avoid set, such that the system starting at a state therein could be controlled to reach a given target set without violating constraints under the worst-case disturbance. We address this problem by designing a new value function with a contracting Bellman backup, where the super-zero level set, i.e., the set of states where the value function is evaluated to be non-negative, recovers the reach-avoid set. Building upon this, we prove that the proposed method can be adapted to compute the viability kernel, or the set of states which could be controlled to satisfy given constraints, and the backward reachable set, or the set of states that could be driven towards a given target set. Finally, we propose to alleviate the curse of dimensionality issue in high-dimensional problems by extending Conservative Q-Learning, a deep reinforcement learning technique, to learn a value function such that the super-zero level set of the learned value function serves as a (conservative) approximation to the reach-avoid set. Our theoretical and empirical results suggest that the proposed method could learn reliably the reach-avoid set and the optimal control policy even with neural network approximation.

Recursive algorithm and log-concavity of representations on the cohomology of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$

We provide a programmable recursive algorithm for the $\mathbb{S}_n$-representations on the cohomology of the moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$ of $n$-pointed stable curves of genus 0. As an application, we find explicit inductive and asymptotic formulas for the invariant part $H^*(\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}/\mathbb{S}_n)$ and prove that its Poincaré polynomial is asymptotically log-concave. Based on numerical computations with our algorithm, we further conjecture that the sequence $\{H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n})\}$ of $\mathbb{S}_n$-modules is equivariantly log-concave.

Birational geometry of generalized Hessenberg varieties and the generalized Shareshian-Wachs conjecture

We introduce generalized Hessenberg varieties and establish basic facts. We show that the Tymoczko action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties extends to generalized Hessenberg varieties and that natural morphisms among them preserve the action. By analyzing natural morphisms and birational maps among generalized Hessenberg varieties, we give an elementary proof of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture. Moreover we present a natural generalization of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture that involves generalized Hessenberg varieties and provide an elementary proof. As a byproduct, we propose a generalized Stanley-Stembridge conjecture for weighted graphs. Our investigation into the birational geometry of generalized Hessenberg varieties enables us to modify them into much simpler varieties like projective spaces or permutohedral varieties by explicit sequences of blowups or projective bundle maps. Using this, we provide two algorithms to compute the $S_n$-representations on the cohomology of generalized Hessenberg varieties. As an application, we compute representations on the low degree cohomology of some Hessenberg varieties.

Geometry of the twin manifolds of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties and unicellular LLT polynomials

Recently, Masuda-Sato and Precup-Sommers independently proved an LLT version of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture which says that the Frobenius characteristics of the cohomology of the twin manifolds of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are unicellular LLT polynomials. The purpose of this paper is to study the geometry of twin manifolds and we prove that they are related by explicit blowups and fiber bundle maps. Upon taking their cohomology, we obtain a direct proof of the modular law which establishes the LLT Shareshian-Wachs conjecture.
