Perturbative solutions for the bumblebee field in a Schwarzschild background

In this paper, we investigate the behavior of a vector field subject to a Lorentz-violating quartic potential on a fixed Schwarzschild background. We analyze the equilibrium configuration of the field and its linear perturbations. We show that the equilibrium solution and spherically symmetric perturbations are governed by a quadratic function whose properties determine their qualitative behavior. By requiring the background field to be real and finite, we derive bounds on the allowed parameters and identify critical cases in which the monopole perturbations become enhanced. We further derive asymptotic expressions for multipole perturbations near the event horizon and at spatial infinity.

CPT-Violating Gravitational Orbital Perturbations

A model for spontaneous symmetry breaking using a specific form of the bumblebee model is analyzed in the context of a Schwarzschild background metric. The resulting back reaction of the symmetry-breaking field on the metric is computed to second order. Consistency with conventional (pseudo)Riemannian geometry is demonstrated. This background field is coupled to fermions via a spin-dependent CPT-violating coupling term of a type commonly considered in the Standard-Model Extension. The perturbations of various orbital trajectories are discussed. Specifically, a spin-dependent orbital velocity is found as well as a spin-dependent precession rate.

Quantization of Space-like States in Lorentz-Violating Theories

Lorentz violation frequently induces modified dispersion relations that can yield space-like states that impede the standard quantization procedures. In certain cases, an extended hamiltonian formalism can be used to define observer-covariant normalization factors for field expansions and phase space integrals. These factors extend the theory to include non-concordant frames in which there are negative-energy states. This formalism provides a rigorous way to quantize certain theories containing space-like states and allows for the consistent computation of Cherenkov radiation rates in arbitrary frames and avoids singular expressions.

Extended Hamiltonian Formalism and Lorentz-Violating Lagrangians

A new perspective on the classical mechanical formulation of particle trajectories in lorentz-violating theories is presented. Using the extended hamiltonian formalism, a Legendre Transformation between the associated covariant Lagrangian and Hamiltonian varieties is constructed. This approach enables calculation of trajectories using hamilton's equations in momentum space and the Euler-Lagrange equations in velocity space away from certain singular points that arise in the theory. Singular points are naturally de-singularized by requiring the trajectories to be smooth functions of both velocity and momentum variables. In addition, it is possible to identify specific sheets of the dispersion relations that correspond to specific solutions for the lagrangian. Examples corresponding to bipartite Finsler functions are computed in detail. A direct connection between the lagrangians and the field-theoretic solutions to the Dirac equation is also established for a special case.

CPT-Violating, Massive Photons and Cherenkov Radiation

CPT-Violating photons are well-known to have problems with energy positivity in certain cases and therefore have not been convincingly quantized to date. We find that by adding a small mass term, consistent with experimental bounds, the theory can be regulated and allows for a consistent covariant quantization procedure. This new framework is applied to a consistent quantum calculation of vacuum Cherenkov radiation rates. These rates turn out to be largely independent of the mass of the photon regulator used. In the physical regime, accessible by ultra high energy cosmic rays, the behavior of the rate is proportional to the square of the CPT-violating parameter and is not realistically observable.

Cherenkov Radiation with Massive, CPT-violating Photons

The source of CPT-violation in the photon sector of the Standard Model Extension arises from a Chern-Simons-like contribution that involves a coupling to a fixed background vector field $k_{AF}^\mu$. These Lorentz- and CPT-violating photons have well-known theoretical issues that arise from missing states at low momenta when $k_{AF}^\mu$ is timelike. In order to make the theory consistent, a tiny mass for the photon can be introduced, well below current experimental bounds. The implementation of canonical quantization can then be implemented as in the CPT-preserving case by using the St\"uckelberg mechanism. We explicitly construct a covariant basis of properly-normalized polarization vectors at fixed three-momentum satisfying the momentum space field equations, in terms of which the vector field can be expanded. As an application of the theory, we calculate the Cherenkov radiation rate for the case of purely timelike $k_{AF}^\mu$, and find a radiation rate at high energies that has a contribution that does not depend on the mass used to regulate the photons.

Singular Lorentz-Violating Lagrangians and Associated Finsler Structures

Several lagrangians associated to classical limits of lorenz-violating fermions in the Standard Model extension (SME) have been shown to yield Finsler functions when the theory is expressed in Euclidean space. When spin-couplings are present, the lagrangian can develop singularities that obstruct the construction of a globally defined Legendre transformation, leading to singular Finsler spaces. A specific sector of the SME where such problems arise is studied. It is found that the singular behavior can be eliminated by an appropriate lifting of the problem to an associated algebraic variety. This provides a smooth classical model for the singular problem. In Euclidean space, the procedure involves combining two related singular Finsler functions into a single smooth function with a semi-positive definite quadratic form defined on a desingularized variety.

Gupta-Bleuler Photon Quantization in the SME

Photon quantization is implemented in the standard model extension (SME) using the Gupta-Bleuler method and BRST concepts. The quantization prescription applies to both the birefringent and non-birefringent CPT-even couplings. A curious incompatibility is found between the presence of the Lorentz-violating terms and the existence of a nontrivial conjugate momentum $\Pi^0$ yielding problems with covariant quantization procedure. Introduction of a mass regulator term can avoid the vanishing of $\Pi^0$ and allows for the implementation of a covariant quantization procedure. Field-theoretic calculations involving the SME photons can then be performed using the mass regulator, similar to the conventional procedure used in electrodynamics for infrared-divergence regulation.

Covariant Photon Quantization in the SME

The Gupta Bleuler quantization procedure is applied to the SME photon sector. A direct application of the method to the massless case fails due to an unavoidable incompleteness in the polarization states. A mass term can be included into the photon lagrangian to rescue the quantization procedure and maintain covariance.

Low Energy Tests of Lorentz and CPT Violation

An overview of the theoretical framework of the Standard Model Extension (SME) that allows for a parametrization of Lorentz and CPT violating effects using effective field theory will be presented. A review of current bounds on these Lorentz violating parameters using various low-energy tests will be reviewed. State-of-the-art measurements involving the Penning Trap, atomic clock, torsion pendulum, and resonant cavities will be discussed. Different experiments can provide stringent bounds on a variety of parameters coupled to various fundamental particles including electrons, protons, neutrons, and photons.

Classical Lagrangians for Momentum Dependent Lorentz Violation

Certain momentum-dependent terms in the fermion sector of the Lorentz-violating Standard Model Extension (SME) yield solvable classical lagrangians of a type not mentioned in the literature. These cases yield new relatively simple examples of Finsler and pseudo-Finsler structures. One of the cases involves antisymmetric $d$-type terms and yields a new example of a relatively simple covariant lagrangian.

Vector Superfields and Lorentz Violation

We extend Lorentz-violating Supersymmetry models to include vector superfields. The CPT-preserving model generalizes easily, while the obvious attempt at generalizing the CPT-violating model meets serious obstructions. Generalizations of the CPT-preserving but Lorentz-Violating model to higher dimensions are also straightforward. Compactification is used to reduce the six-dimensional theory to an ${\cal{N}} =2$ Lorentz-violating theory in four dimensions, while the ten-dimensional theory is used to produce an ${\cal{N}}=4$ Lorentz-violating theory. This may be useful in future constructions involving Ads/CFT correspondence with Lorentz violation.

Quaternionic Formulation of the Dirac Equation

The Dirac equation with Lorentz violation involves additional coefficients and yields a fourth-order polynomial that must be solved to yield the dispersion relation. The conventional method of taking the determinant of $4\times 4$ matrices of complex numbers often yields unwieldy dispersion relations. By using quaternions, the Dirac equation may be reduced to $2 \times 2$ form in which the structure of the dispersion relations become more transparent. In particular, it is found that there are two subsets of Lorentz-violating parameter sets for which the dispersion relation is easily solvable. Each subset contains half of the parameter space so that all parameters are included.

Factoring the Dispersion Relation in the Presence of Lorentz Violation

We produce an explicit formula for the dispersion relation for the Dirac Equation in the Standard Model Extension (SME) in the presence of Lorentz violation. Our expression is obtained using a novel techniques which exploit the algebra of quaternions. The dispersion relation is found to conveniently factor in two special cases that each involve a mutually exclusive set of non-vanishing Lorentz-violating parameters. This suggests that a useful approach to studies of Lorentz-violating models is to split the parameter space into two separate pieces, each of which yields a simple, tractable dispersion relation that can be used for analysis.

One-Loop Renormalization of the Electroweak Sector with Lorentz Violation

The one-loop renormalizability of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model Extension with Lorentz violation is studied. Functional determinants are used to calculate the one-loop contributions of the higgs, gauge bosons and fermions to the one-loop effective action. The results are consistent with multiplicative renormalization of the SME coupling constants. Conventional Electroweak symmetry breaking is effectively unaltered relative to the standard case as the renormalized SME parameters are sufficient to absorb all infinite contributions.
