Stochastic Differential Equations: Theory and Practice of Numerical Solution. With Programs on PYTHON and MATLAB

This monograph is devoted to the problem of numerical integration of stochastic differential equations (SDEs), mainly Ito SDEs. More precisely, the book mainly discusses high-order strong numerical methods with orders of accuracy 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 for SDEs. The Euler (Euler-Maruyama) method for Ito SDEs is also considered. Moreover, weak numerical methods for Ito SDEs are presented. This book contains 20 chapters divided into 4 parts. This book has many overlaps with the monograph: Dmitriy F. Kuznetsov, Strong Approximation of Iterated Ito and Stratonovich Stochastic Integrals: Method of Generalized Multiple Fourier Series. Application to Numerical Solution of Ito SDEs and Semilinear SPDEs, 2026, 1248 pp., https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.14184v82. Thus, both monographs are placed within a single submission, and their Internet links will differ only by the version numbers within https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.14184

New representations of the Hu-Meyer formulas and series expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals with respect to components of a multidimensional Wiener process

The article is devoted to the systematic derivation of new representations of the Hu-Meyer formulas. The formula expressing a multiple Wiener stochastic integral through the sum of multiple Stratonovich stochastic integrals and the formula expressing a multiple Stratonovich stochastic integral through the sum of multiple Wiener stochastic integrals are derived for the case of a multidimensional Wiener process. At that several different definitions of the multiple Stratonovich stochastic integral and several variants of sufficient conditions for the validity of the Hu-Meyer formulas are used. In particular, the proof method proposed by the author in 2006 is applied to obtain Hu-Meyers formulas based on generalized multiple Fourier series for the case of a multidimensional Wiener process. Of great importance for the numerical solution of Ito stochastic differential equations is the verification of sufficient conditions for the applicability of the Hu-Meyer formula (based on generalized multiple Fourier series) for the case of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals with respect to components of a multidimensional Wiener process. In the author's previous works, the indicated conditions were verified for iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities 1 to 6 (the case of an arbitrary basis in the Hilbert space) and for iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities 7 and 8 (the case of two special bases in Hilbert space (the trigonometric Fourier basis and the basis of Legendre polynomials)). Therefore, the results of the article will be usefull for constructing high-order strong numerical methods for non-commutative systems of Ito stochastic differential equations.

Expansions of Iterated Stratonovich Stochastic Integrals of Multiplicities 1 to 4. Combained Approach Based on Generalized Multiple and Iterated Fourier series

The article is devoted to the expansions of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities 1 to 4 on the base of the combined approach of generalized multiple and iterated Fourier series. We consider two different parts of the expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals. The mean-square convergence of the first part is proved on the base of generalized multiple Fourier series that are converge in the sense of norm in Hilbert space $L_2([t, T]^k),$ $k=1,2,3,4.$ The mean-square convergence of the second part is proved on the base of generalized iterated Fourier series that are converge pointwise. At that, we do not use the iterated Ito stochastic integrals as a tool of the proof and directly consider the iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals. The cases of multiple Fourier-Legendre series and multiple trigonometric Fourier series are considered in detail. The considered expansions contain only one operation of the limit transition in contrast to its existing analogues. This property is very important for the mean-square approximation of iterated stochastic integrals. The results of the article can be applied to the numerical integration of Ito stochastic differential equations.

Comparative Analysis of the Efficiency of Application of Legendre Polynomials and Trigonometric Functions to the Numerical Integration of Ito Stochastic Differential Equations

The article is devoted to comparative analysis of the efficiency of application of Legendre polynomials and trigonometric functions to the numerical integration of Ito stochastic differential equations in the framework of the method of approximation of iterated Ito and Stratonovich stochastic integrals based on generalized multiple Fourier series. On the example of iterated Ito stochastic integrals of multiplicities 1 to 3, included in the Taylor-Ito expansion, it is shown that expansions of stochastic integrals based on Legendre polynomials are much easier and require significantly less computational costs compared to their analogues obtained using the trigonometric system of functions. The results of the article can be useful for construction of high-order strong numerical methods for Ito stochastic differential equations.

The article is devoted to the expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of second multiplicity into the double series of products of standard Gaussian random variables. The proof of expansion is based on the application of double Fourier-Legendre series and double trigonometric Fourier series summarized by Pringsheim method. The results of the article are generalized to the case of an arbitrary complete orthonormal system of functions in the space $L_2([t, T])$ and $ψ_1(τ), ψ_2(τ)\in L_2([t, T]).$ The considered expansion can be applied to the numerical integration of Ito stochastic differential equations. Some recent results on the expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities 3 to 6 are given.

The article is devoted to comparison of the Milstein expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals with the method of expansion of iterated stochastic integrals based on generalized multiple Fourier series. We consider some practical material connected with the expansions of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals from the Taylor-Stratonovich expansion based on multiple trigonometric Fourier series. The comparison of effectiveness of the Fourier-Legendre series as well as the trigonomertic Fourier series for expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals is considered.

The article is devoted to the development of the method of expansion and mean-square approximation of iterated Ito stochastic integrals based on generalized multiple Fourier series converging in the mean. We adapt this method for iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicity 3 from the Taylor-Stratonovich expansion. The main result of the article has been derived with using the triple Fourier-Legendre series and triple trigonometric Fourier series for the general case of series summation. Some recent results on the expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities 3 to 6 are given. The results of the article can be applied to the numerical integration of Ito stochastic differential equations in accordance with the strong criterion of convergence.

New Simple Method of Expansion of Iterated Ito Stochastic integrals of Multiplicity 2 Based on Expansion of the Brownian Motion Using Legendre Polynomials and Trigonometric Functions

The article is devoted to the expansion of iterated Ito stochastic integrals of second multiplicity based on expansion of the Brownian motion (standard Wiener process) using complete orthonormal systems of functions in the space $L_2([t, T]).$ The cases of Legendre polynomials and trigonometric functions are considered in details. We obtained a new representation of the Levy stochastic area based on the Legendre polynomials. This representation was first derived in the author's work (1997). In this article, we obtain the mentioned representation by a simpler method compared to the author's work (1997). Also, we get the polynomial representation of the Levy stochastic area using the method of expansion of iterated Ito stochastic integrals based on generalized multple Fourier series. The polynomial representation of the Levy stochastic area has more simple form in comparison with the classical trigonometric representation of the Levy stochastic area. The convergence in the mean of degree $2n$ $(n\in\mathbb{N})$ as well as the convergence with probability 1 for approximations of the Levy stochastic area are proved. The results of the article can be applied to the numerical solution of Ito stochastic differential equations as well as to the numerical approximation of mild solution for non-commutative semilinear stochastic partial differential equations.

Expansion of Iterated Stratonovich Stochastic Integrals of Arbitrary Multiplicity Based on Generalized Iterated Fourier Series Converging Pointwise

The article is devoted to the expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of arbitrary multiplicity $k$ $(k\in\mathbb{N})$ based on the generalized iterated Fourier series converging pointwise. The case of Fourier-Legendre series as well as the case of trigonometric Fourier series are considered in details. The obtained expansion provides a possibility to represent the iterated Stratonovich stochastic integral in the form of iterated series of products of standard Gaussian random variables. Convergence in the mean of degree $2n$ $(n\in \mathbb{N})$ of the expansion is proved. Some recent results on the expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities 3 to 6 are given. The results of the article can be applied to the numerical solution of Ito stochastic differential equations.

Exact Calculation of the Mean-Square Error in the Method of Expansion of Iterated Ito Stochastic integrals Based on Generalized Multiple Fourier Series

The article is devoted to the developement of the method of expansion and mean-square approximation of iterated Ito stochastic integrals based on generalized multiple Fourier series converging in the sense of norm in the space $L_2([t, T]^k)$ ($k$ is the multiplicity of the iterated Ito stochastic integral). We obtain the exact and approximate expressions for the mean-square approximation error of iterated Ito stochastic integrals of multiplicity $k$ ($k\in\mathbb{N}$) from the stochastic Taylor-Ito expansion. As a result, we do not need to use redundant terms of expansions of iterated Ito stochastic integrals that complicate the numerical methods for Ito stochastic differential equations. Moreover, we proved the convergence with propability 1 for the method of expansion of iterated Ito stochastic integrals based on generalized multiple Fourier series for the cases of multiple Fourier-Legendre series and multiple trigonometric Fourier series. Mean-square approximation of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals is also considered in the article. The results of the article can be applied to the high-order strong numerical methods for Ito stochastic differential equations as well as for non-commutative semilinear stochastic partial differential equations with multiplicative trace class noise.

Mean-Square Approximation of Iterated Ito and Stratonovich Stochastic Integrals of Multiplicities 1 to 6 from the Taylor-Ito and Taylor-Stratonovich Expansions Using Legendre Polynomials

The article is devoted to the practical material on expansions and mean-square approximations of specific iterated Ito and Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities 1 to 6 with respect to components of the multidimensional Wiener process on the base of the method of generalized multiple Fourier series. More precisely, we used the multiple Fourier--Legendre series converging in the sense of norm in the space $L_2([t, T]^k)$ $(k=1,\ldots,6)$ for approximation of iterated Ito and Stratonovich stochastic integrals. The considered iterated Ito and Stratonovich stochastic integrals are part of the stochastic Taylor expansions (Taylor-Ito and Taylor-Stratonovich expansions). Therefore, the results of the article can be useful for construction of the high-order strong numerical methods for Ito stochastic differential equations. Expansions of iterated Ito and Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities 1 to 6 using Legendre polynomials are derived. The convergence with probability 1 of the mentioned method of generalized multiple Fourier series is proved for iterated Ito stochastic integrals of multiplicities $k$ $(k\in\mathbb{N})$ for the cases of multiple Fourier-Legendre series and multiple trigonometric Fourier series.

Expansion of Iterated Stratonovich Stochastic Integrals of Multiplicity 2. Combined Approach Based on Generalized Multiple and Iterated Fourier Series

The article is devoted to the expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicity 2 on the base of the combined approach of generalized multiple and iterated Fourier series. We consider two different parts of the expansion of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals. The mean-square convergence of the first part is proved on the base of generalized multiple Fourier series converging in the sense of norm in Hilbert space $L_2([t, T]^2).$ The mean-square convergence of the second part is proved on the base of generalized iterated (double) Fourier series converging pointwise. At that, we prove the iterated limit transition for the second part of the expansion on the base of Lebesgue's Dominated Convergence Theorem. The results of the article can be applied to the numerical integration of Ito stochastic differential equations.

Four New Forms of the Taylor-Ito and Taylor-Stratonovich Expansions and its Application to the High-Order Strong Numerical Methods for Ito Stochastic Differential Equations

The problem of the Taylor-Ito and Taylor-Stratonovich expansions of the Ito stochastic processes in a neighborhood of a fixed moment of time is considered. The classical forms of the Taylor-Ito and Taylor-Stratonovich expansions are transformed to the four new representations, which includes the minimal sets of different types of iterated Ito and Stratonovich stochastic integrals. Therefore, these representations (the so-called unified Taylor-Ito and Taylor-Stratonovich expansions) are more convenient for constructing of high-order strong numerical methods for Ito stochastic differential equations. Explicit one-step strong numerical schemes with the orders of convergence 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 based on the unified Taylor-Ito and Taylor-Stratonovich expansions are derived. Effective mean-square approximations of iterated Ito and Stratonovich stochastic integrals from these numerical schemes are constructed on the base of the multiple Fourier-Legendre series with multiplicities 1 to 6.

Considerable attention is paid to expansions based on multiple Fourier-Legendre series. The exact and approximate expressions for the mean-square error of approximation of iterated Ito stochastic integrals are derived. The results of the article will be useful for numerical integration of Ito stochastic differential equations with non-commutative noise.

Expansion of Iterated Stratonovich Stochastic Integrals of Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Multiplicities Based on Generalized Multiple Fourier Series

The article is devoted to the construction of expansions of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth multiplicities based on the method of generalized multiple Fourier series converging in the sense of norm in the Hilbert space $L_2([t, T]^k),$ $k\in\mathbb{N}.$ Specifically, we mainly use multiple Fourier-Legendre series and multiple trigonometric Fourier series $(k=1,\ldots,8)$. The case of generalized multiple Fourier series in arbitrary complete orthonormal systems of functions in $L_2([t, T])$ is also considered for $k=1,\ldots,6$. Recently, expansions of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicity $k,$ $k\in\mathbb{N}$ (the case of continuous weight functions and an arbitrary complete orthonormal system of functions in $L_2([t, T])$) have been obtained (Theorems 42, 44) but under one additional condition. The considered expansions converge in the mean-square sense and contain only one operation of the limit transition in contrast to its existing analogues. Expansions of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals turned out much simpler than appropriate expansions of iterated Ito stochastic integrals. We use expansions of the latter as a tool of the proof of expansions for iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals. Iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals are part of the Taylor-Stratonovich expansion for solutions of Ito stochastic differential equations. That is why the results of the article can be applied to the numerical integrations of Ito stochastic differential equations.

The Proof of Convergence with Probability 1 in the Method of Expansion of Iterated Ito Stochastic Integrals Based on Generalized Multiple Fourier Series

The article is devoted to the formulation and proof of the theorem on convergence with probability 1 of expansion of iterated Ito stochastic integrals of arbitrary multiplicity based on generalized multiple Fourier series converging in the sense of norm in Hilbert space. The cases of multiple Fourier-Legendre series and multiple trigonomertic Fourier series are considered in detail. The proof of the mentioned theorem is based on the general properties of multiple Fourier series as well as on the estimate for the fourth moment of approximation error in the method of expansion of iterated Ito stochastic integrals based on generalized multiple Fourier series.

The Hypotheses on Expansion of Iterated Stratonovich Stochastic Integrals of Arbitrary Multiplicity and Their Partial Proof

In this article, we collected more than thirty theorems on expansions of iterated Ito and Stratonovich stochastic integrals, which have been formulated and proved by the author in the period from 1997 to 2025. These theorems open up a new direction for study of iterated Ito and Stratonovich stochastic integrals. We consider two theorems on expansion of iterated Ito stochastic integrals of arbitrary multiplicity $k$ $(k\in\mathbb{N})$ based on generalized multiple Fourier series converging in the sense of norm in Hilbert space $L_2([t, T]^k)$. We adapt these theorems on expansion of iterated Ito stochastic integrals of arbitrary multiplicity $k$ $(k\in\mathbb{N})$ for iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities 1 to 8 (the case of continuously differentiable weight functions and a complete orthonormal system of Legendre polynomials or trigonometric functions in $L_2([t, T])$) and for iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities 1 to 6 (the case of an arbitrary complete orthonormal system of functions in $L_2([t, T])$). On the base of the presented theorems we formulate several hypotheses on expansions of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of arbitrary multiplicity $k$ $(k\in\mathbb{N})$. Recently, Hypothesis 8 has been proved for the case of an arbitrary complete orthonormal system of functions in $L_2([t, T]),$ $p_1=\ldots=p_k=p,$ $k\in\mathbb{N}$ but under one additional condition (Theorems 57, 59). The considered expansions converge in the mean-square sense and contain only one operation of the limit transition in contrast to its existing analogues. The mentioned iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals are part of the Taylor-Stratonovich expansion, i.e. the results of the article can be applied to numerical integration of Ito SDEs.

Expansions of Iterated Stratonovich Stochastic Integrals Based on Generalized Multiple Fourier Series: Multiplicities 1 to 8 and Beyond

The article is devoted to the expansions of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals on the basis of the method of generalized multiple Fourier series that converge in the sense of norm in Hilbert space $L_2([t, T]^k),$ $k\in\mathbb{N}.$ Expansions of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals are obtained for the case of multiple Fourier-Legendre series and for the case of multiple trigonometric Fourier series $(k=1,\ldots,8)$. Recently, expansions of iterated Stratonovich stochastic integrals of multiplicities $k=1,\ldots,6$ (the case of continuous weight functions and an arbitrary complete orthonormal system of functions in $L_2([t, T])$) have been obtained. These results are generalized to the case of multiplicitity $k,$ $k\in\mathbb{N}$ (Theorems 51, 53) but under one additional condition. The considered expansions contain only one operation of the limit transition in contrast to its existing analogues. This property is very important for the mean-square approximation of iterated stochastic integrals. The results of the article can be applied to the numerical integration of Ito stochastic differential equations with multidimensional non-commutative noises.
