Nonnegative Ricci curvature and virtual abelianness in dimensions less than 12

For any complete Riemannian manifold $M^n$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature and sublinear diameter growth, we establish a dimensional constraint $n\ge 4s(s-1)+k+1$ if the fundamental group $\pi_1(M)$ contains a torsion-free nilpotent subgroup of rank $k$ and step $s\ge 2$. As a consequence, if such a manifold $M$ has dimension $n<12$, then $\pi_1(M)$ is almost abelian. The proof is based on a dimensional estimate for $\mathrm{RCD}(0,N)$ spaces admitting $\mathbb{R}$-orbits of large Hausdorff dimension.

Complete manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and slow relative volume growth

For any complete and noncompact manifold $M$ with $\mathrm{Ric}\ge 0$, we define a function $\mathrm{RV}(s)$ that describes the growth of relative volume asymptotically $$\mathrm{RV}(s)=\limsup_{r\to\infty} \dfrac{\mathrm{vol} B_{rs}(p)}{\mathrm{vol} B_r(p)},\quad s\ge 1.$$ Then we study the fundamental groups of such manifolds with slow relative volume growth and sublinear diameter growth. We show that if $\mathrm{RV}(s)\ll s^2$ as $s\to\infty$, then $\pi_1(M)$ is almost abelian; if $\mathrm{RV}(s)\ll s^{1+\delta}$ for some $\delta\in (0,1)$ and the Ricci curvature is positive at a point, then $\pi_1(M)$ is finite. These results generalize our previous work on complete manifolds with $\mathrm{Ric}\ge 0$ and linear (minimal) volume growth.

Universal non-CD of sub-Riemannian manifolds

We prove that a sub-Riemannian manifold equipped with a full-support Radon measure is never $\mathrm{CD}(K,N)$ for any $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $N\in (1,\infty)$ unless it is Riemannian. This generalizes previous non-CD results for sub-Riemannian manifolds, where a measure with smooth and positive density is considered. Our proof is based on the analysis of the tangent cones and the geodesics within. Secondly, we construct new $\mathrm{RCD}$ structures on $\mathbb{R}^n$, named cone-Grushin spaces, that fail to be sub-Riemannian due to the lack of a scalar product along a curve, yet exhibit characteristic features of sub-Riemannian geometry, such as horizontal directions, large Hausdorff dimension, and inhomogeneous metric dilations.

On the topology of manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and linear volume growth

Understanding the relationships between geometry and topology is a central theme in Riemannian geometry. We establish two results on the fundamental groups of open (complete and noncompact) $n$-manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and linear volume growth. First, we show that the fundamental group of such a manifold contains a subgroup $\mathbb{Z}^k$ of finite index, where $0\le k\le n-1$. Second, we prove that if the Ricci curvature is positive everywhere, then the fundamental group is finite. The proofs are based on an analysis of the equivariant asymptotic geometry of successive covering spaces and a plane/halfplane rigidity result for RCD spaces.

Contractibility of moduli spaces of RCD(0,2)-structures

This paper focuses on RCD(0,2)-spaces, which can be thought of as possibly non-smooth metric measure spaces with non-negative Ricci curvature and dimension less than 2. First, we establish a list of the compact topological spaces admitting an RCD(0,2)-structure. Then, we describe the associated moduli space of RCD(0,2)-structures for each of them. In particular, we show that all these moduli spaces are contractible.

Moduli spaces of compact RCD(0,N)-structures

The goal of the paper is to set the foundations and prove some topological results about moduli spaces of non-smooth metric measure structures with non-negative Ricci curvature in a synthetic sense (via optimal transport) on a compact topological space; more precisely, we study moduli spaces of RCD(0,N)-structures. First, we relate the convergence of RCD(0,N)-structures on a space to the associated lifts' equivariant convergence on the universal cover. Then we construct the Albanese and soul maps, which reflect how structures on the universal cover split, and we prove their continuity. Finally, we construct examples of moduli spaces of RCD(0,N)-structures that have non-trivial rational homotopy groups.
